- Jerphelps, on 06/18/2009, -1/+40lol I love the Ubuntu BLOWS comments or the negative comments from Mac users.
I installed Ubuntu 9.04 on my workstation, server and laptop. It worked right out of the box. Its much faster, easier to use, and has been a lot of fun to use. I even had support for my Broadcomm wireless card right out of the box so to speak. There were added themes for those who dont like the default. 9.10 should be just as great if not better then 9.04
I am not so sure I like Empathy replacing Pidgin but in the long run it doesnt matter since I will just install Pidgin in its place.
if looks are more important you then by all means use Vista. Its only good for playing games and looking pretty. Mac and Linux i believe give me and my friends more functionality in a safer environment. - 2matrix, on 06/18/2009, -7/+40I am in love 9.04. It was the first time that I finally said goodbye to Microsoft and found out what a true, brilliant, state-of-the-art OS really is. My friends are leaving Windows as well, I think linux has finally made a dent in a market once dominated by Microsoft, an OS people use just because it's the only game in town. I can't wait for 9.10.
- L0stm4n, on 06/18/2009, -2/+34sudo apt-get install pidgin
You can add software to it you know ;) - lex0429, on 06/18/2009, -1/+29i care
- 2matrix, on 06/18/2009, -0/+26Umm, dumbass, that's because the Linux file system does not require defragging unlike Windows. Whereas my XP / Vista machines require defragging bi-weekly, my linux boxes never seem to slow down, but hey it's ok I know this because I am fanboy....
http://geekblog.oneandoneis2.org/index.php/2006/08 ...
You probably wouldn't understand the article anyway. - 2matrix, on 06/18/2009, -2/+26I agree.
Most of the people who hate Linux have never tried it (trust me, I was one of the idiots)
Windows has big numbers, but why ? Because people don't like change, plain and simple. People stick with Windows not because it's a great product, but because it's the only product that can run software designed for it's particular platform. The only reason Windows users hate Linux (and I can tell you this is the honest to gods truth) is because they fear change (I used be that person). - T8erT0T, on 06/18/2009, -2/+23I'm sticking with the 'pidg. Bird is the word.
- theaceoffire, on 06/18/2009, -2/+18I left back Windows when 7.04 was the born, and I got to say that compared to then Ubuntu is far more polished and easy now.
^_^ Back then I had to hack XOrg.conf for hours to get my funky system going... now it works by default. Small things in the OS have really changed my work habits as well (Expose and Scale plugins for compiz), and the auto-install codecs and stuff has made it very easy for new users that I give the OS to.
I installed a stripped down, hacked version to an EEEPC a while back (7.10 or 8.04), and only did security patches... still going strong. Ended up giving it to my Parent, who loves it way more than the old laptop (Smaller and faster).
As it stands, I already can hand off copies of the CD to friends without too much explanation or work from my end, and I never thought that day would come. - kelyar, on 06/18/2009, -2/+15why wait? install new mesa, new xserver-xorg-video-intel, and new kernel
- pgoetz, on 06/18/2009, -0/+13And if you blew, you'd have a marketable skill.
- paul21, on 06/18/2009, -2/+14I agree, I think its UI needs some improvements. BTW where is apps ranking?
Personally, I've been waiting for apps screenshots on add/remove software for a long time. - seandfeeney, on 06/18/2009, -0/+11I am most excited about one hundred papercuts https://edge.launchpad.net/hundredpapercuts
- theOster, on 06/18/2009, -0/+11kind of a waste of energy imo
- Ryuzaki356647, on 06/18/2009, -0/+11@mojoel: I have a Broadcom wireless card, and believe me, I feel your pain. But at the same time, Broadcom released drivers in May that work well with Ubuntu (not in the OS, gotta find them yourself) after you update them. I use 9.04 with a 4311 and it works beautifully.
- YourNameHere1, on 06/18/2009, -0/+10Most people using Linux have been using firefox 3.5 or newer for a while. Ubuntu only announces this to make their release look better for those new linux users that don't know how to install the newest versions of firefox (or whatever) on their own.
Ubuntu users have been requesting a new theme for a while now, so it's big news to them.
And are you seriously making fun of kernel development? - theaceoffire, on 06/18/2009, -0/+10"People stick with Windows not because it's a great product, but because it's the only product that can run software designed for it's particular platform."
^_^;;; Not really: A large number of people stick with Windows because they thing XP *is* their computer. They think Google is their browser, that the 'e' is the Internet. Half of them can only save stuff on thumb drives by opening the file in word/excel/whatever and saving it to the thumb drive.
Now, for those who know about Max, Linux, and Windows; THEN your statement is correct, they stay on the platform that gives them comfort or runs their programs. - jbird32275, on 06/18/2009, -0/+10Glad to see you departed from your ways.
I believe Windows has big numbers for another reason. Most people don't know Linux exists. I tell people about it all the time and they are interested. It blows their mind when they realize it's not just a 2 party system (Windows or Mac). I hand out Ubuntu CD's to a lot of people after telling them about it. I don't tell them it's better or worse, just different. They usually come back in a couple of days ranting about how great it is. The big selling point is the lack of viruses. The truth of the matter is there is no real marketing behind Linux; if there was it would be more popular. - YourNameHere1, on 06/18/2009, -0/+9Your card is supported by the b43 driver: http://linuxwireless.org/en/users/Drivers/b43#Supp ...
depending on which rev you have: Rev. 2 uses b43legacy, Rev. 3 uses b43
Installing the b43 or the b43legacy is super easy if your card isn't recognized out of the box: http://linuxwireless.org/en/users/Drivers/b43#firm ...
..... As for having cards that aren't officially supported yet (like me), my best advice is to buy hardware that is known to have a supported card..... When I got my notebook last year I knew that the card that I got (the BCM 4322 802.11a/b/g/n on my Vista64) wasn't supported in Linux yet, but I figured it would be usable with ndiswrapper..... well I was wrong.
It took the community a few months before there were some real solutions..... I could of tried to find a similar 32 bit driver or a driver from a 64bit xp-pro on the same HP dv9000 series, but none of this was a solid solution.
I ended up buying a new wifi device that uses the RTL8187 driver (I chose this because the rtl8187 is included in the default linux kernel).
So I spent the $60 and got a usb connected AWUS036H wifi device that has more range than most other wifi cards out there (using the 9 dBi and 2 dBi antennas): http://www.tuto-fr.com/en/tutorial/materiel/awus03 ...
The RTL8187 module loads automatically the minute I plug in the usb without having to configure anything, and the AWUS036H works perfectly for those weak wifi signals way down the road. I don't even use aircrack-ng or anything (even though the rtl8187 is fully aircrack compatible) because there are always free/open networks within range of the 9 dBi antenna.
Lately there has been workarounds for my BCM4322 card, ever since Broadcom released firmware blobs and the 4312 driver. The 4312 driver can be used for most cards including mine: http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Broadcom_BCM43 ...
I'm just going to wait for the official b43 driver to support my BCM4322..... until then I'm cool with my AWUS036H..... even then I'll keep it for those weak signals. - brettalton, on 06/18/2009, -3/+11Please do a bit more research before submitting articles to Digg please, thanks.
1) Find me a comment from Mark Shuttleworth or the Desktop Team that says Karmic is going to have a new theme... a real announcement please.
2) What's wrong with PulseAudio in 9.04? PulseAudio was only half implemented in 8.04 but after two releases, I'm pretty sure they've integrated it properly by now. I haven't followed PulseAudio, but a link would be nice.
3) Firefox 3.5, link: https://blueprints.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+spec/desk ...
4) Faster boot time was already achieved in 9.04 but yes, RJS is planning for 10-second boot on a Dell Inspiron Mini 9 for 10.04, link: http://arstechnica.com/open-source/news/2009/06/ub ...
5) Ext4 support wasn't just added to 9.10, it's available in 9.04 thanks to 2.6.28, it will only now be default in 9.10, link: http://kernelnewbies.org/Ext4
6) GRUB2 isn't absolutely guaranteed as they're still doing a lot of debugging. If there are too many problems, it will be pulled, link: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeam/Grub2Testing
7) Ya, Plymouth is a no, but why? http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_item&am ...
8) Where has this been confirmed that 2.6.31 will be used instead of 2.6.30? What's with the link to http://kernelnewbies.org/Linux_2_6_31? The page is empty...
9) Intel's acceleration mode is switching from EXA to UXA, link: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/UxaTesting, http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/karmic/alpha2#New%20 ...
10) This one at least had links :)
11) Gnome 3 testing isn't guaranteed for Karmic, link: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DesktopTeam/Specs/Karmic/G ...
12) PackageKit has been included since at least 8.04 but this doesn't mean it will be taking over gdebi, synaptic, etc. anytime soon, link: http://packages.ubuntu.com/search?suite=default&am ...
13) Empathy vs Pidgin, Empathy will replace Pidgin and here was their usability testing: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/EmpathyVsPidginUsability, https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DesktopTeam/Meeting/2009-0 ...
Did you know that they also may be dropping The GIMP off the main installation CD? https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DesktopTeam/Meeting/2009-0 ... - subxero37, on 06/18/2009, -4/+12Because that's not really an acceptable solution.
- sloppychris, on 06/19/2009, -0/+7There's nothing keeping anyone from installing 3.5 now. It will just be installed by default in Karmic.
- 3242130193, on 06/19/2009, -0/+7I don't think this is a bad idea, moving from Pidgin to Empathy. Pidgin has had ages to implement voice and video, but they still don't have it. A simple Google around shows:
>Add voice and video support for all protocols that support it. This WILL happen eventually, but it is a rather large undertaking and very few core developers are interested in working on it.
http://developer.pidgin.im/ticket/34
Long story short: if the developers aren't interested in giving you what you want, you're better off just using something else, even if you're a distro maintainer. Voice, chat and video should be integrated, they shouldn't need two clients.
But then again, if you still want Pidgin, no one's going to stop you from installing it yourself. - canthraxp, on 06/18/2009, -0/+7Oh a blog that has negative opinions about things?
Never seen something like that! - 3242130193, on 06/19/2009, -1/+8Actually. Arch is amazing. But I'm just going to bury you for being an ***** elitist. (@Hydraulix)
And in any case, Arch and Ubuntu are two completely different distros and nobody should go straight from Ubuntu to Arch unless they've done a ***** of homework.
Sincerely, a Debian and Arch dual-booter. - YourNameHere1, on 06/18/2009, -1/+8I've used Arch for close to 2 years now. I love using a rolling release distro and having the newest version of everything.
You can even use the Testing repository for the very newest bleeding edge packages..... I avoid this since I'm not a developer. Most bugs are fixed by the time the packages are moved from the Testing repo into the Core, Extra, and Community repos.
My favorite things about Archlinux would have to be the AUR repository and the ABS tree..... and pacman/pacbuilder. - paul21, on 06/18/2009, -1/+8An usability test that doesn't test MSN Protocol? They dropped pidgin arguing that it would be better for new users... I guess new users don't care about MSN support, they all use IRC and Jabber. What a beautiful perception of the real world...
- UnbannedAccount, on 06/18/2009, -1/+8Bug fixes and "tighter integration"! I don't know about everyone else, but I'm hard.
- 2matrix, on 06/18/2009, -3/+10Why the hell would someone make a blog dedicated to hating linux ? The only good, honest reason I can think of is that they are jealous.
- 2matrix, on 06/18/2009, -1/+8I can't get a broadcom chipset in a dell wireless NIC to work with XP SP3 - it works fine in Vista, but not in XP.
- Vadi0, on 06/18/2009, -6/+12PackageKit isn't something to get excited about, but sad. Certain design design decisions in it: http://www.packagekit.org/pk-screenshots.html look like a worse copy of what Ubuntu already has.
The only good thing it's for is allowing apps to install components as necessary. That's it. - Madhattan, on 06/18/2009, -0/+6as long as sound, internal mic, and wifi work out of the box, I am so ready.
I hate having to do hours of research and terminal commands to get misc parts of my laptop working with linux... - mok000, on 06/19/2009, -0/+6Windows is for Gamers and Grandmas.
- denhamcoote, on 06/18/2009, -0/+6about you.
- rockon4life45, on 06/18/2009, -0/+6I'm glad this is Linux so I can ***** uninstall Empathy and go back to Ekiga and Pidgin
/angry rant - NoTiG, on 06/18/2009, -0/+6well one thing I am looking forward to in the newer kernel there is driver support for my asus xonar stx delux sound card so that is what I am hoping for
- ed54, on 06/18/2009, -3/+8Damn, and I just got used to Pidgin.
Otherwise, some pretty cool stuff. - paul21, on 06/18/2009, -3/+8Yeah, you lazy boy. Or just write your own driver like the times when men were men and wrote their own drivers. :D
- mojoel, on 06/18/2009, -3/+8I'm gonna give this a try but if the frakkin' thing doesn't offer any more support for my broadcom 4306 wireless I'll be giving up on Ubuntu.
- sloppychris, on 06/19/2009, -0/+5It's like buying a Mac and expecting a Windows program to work on it. Sorry, the stuff you bought doesn't work with each other. Don't blame Ubuntu (or the Mac in my example).
What's great about Linux is there are lots of volunteers who are willing to work hard on making hardware that hasn't even tried to be compatible work surprisingly well. - talkingwires, on 06/18/2009, -0/+5There is no new theme for 9.10. We've know this for months now.
"i'm pretty darn confident we'll have a new look for 10.04 but i think only pieces of that will emerge for 9.10 " - Mark Shuttleworth

EXT4 by default is still up in the air, as some applications depend on the way EXT3 uses the filesystem, and cause massive data loss with EXT4. People have been clamoring for GRUB2 for years now, solely because it has the digit "2" in it's name. The developers have shown little interest in unleashing that can of worms. As for Firefox 3.5 and Gnome 2.28, no *****, Sherlock. Ubuntu has tracked Gnome's release schedule from the beginning and Firefox's RC just dropped.
For a list that wasn't just made up off the top of some blogger's head, why not look here at the official plans? https://blueprints.launchpad.net/ubuntu - nutmac, on 06/18/2009, -0/+5While it remains to be seen, Ubuntu artwork theme is finally considering a new look:

"Brown has served us well" but other options will be considered for Karmic Koala." - Wonderama, on 06/18/2009, -0/+5Will someone pleeeaseee help me get my Verizon USB 760 to work now, or will these "bug fixes" do it? Damn Ubuntu support board sucks.
- BenTheTank, on 06/18/2009, -3/+7I like Kubuntu better...
- manishsinha27, on 06/21/2009, -0/+4Revert back the drivers to 2.4
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ReinhardTartler/X/Revertin ... - YourNameHere1, on 06/19/2009, -0/+4Your (3) third comment is lame. There are plenty of gtk themes and icon packs out there to make Linux look much better than that ugly blue Windows theme used in both Vista and 7 (OS X does look good though). Maybe the default clearlooks glossy theme that is used by gnome is ugly, or that ubuntu orange/brown..... all you have to do is install the murrine gtk theme engine and pick a nice theme from gnome-looks. (or make your own)
My homemade themes using murrine and hydoxygen:

- manishsinha27, on 06/21/2009, -0/+4Revert your drivers back to 2.4 version
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ReinhardTartler/X/Revertin ... - Jerphelps, on 06/18/2009, -0/+4Linux isnt perfect. Just 2 - 3 yrs ago it truly was an OS for the geeks only. But I think in the last year Linux has really made some good advances. I have sat down with users who dont know how to install a printer in windows yet 20 minutes later I have them navigating through Linux while I explain differences to them, they are still using Linux.
You obviously are a linux hater and thats fine... spending "countless hours" trying to get something to work tells me that you either have no patience, or you are doing something really wrong.
Yes with Ubuntu 8.10 and 9.04 I have literally clicked through the installer, finished the install and was up and running with nothing crashing or bombing out on me in very little time. As soon as the installer was done and I was connected to the internet, I had a pop up notifying me about drivers for my Broadcomm wireless and my Nvidia card. So I dont see how thats "Pretending" - mynameistux, on 07/04/2009, -0/+4good for you
