- hamobu, on 11/06/2008, -8/+35Am I the only one that thinks that many of these quotes are nonsense? Take this one for example:
"To restore America's competitiveness, we must recruit a new generation of science and technology leaders by investing in diversity."
Or this one:
Obama said if elected his government would "harness technology to confront the biggest challenges that America faces". (As oposed to not "harnessing" technology) - kaelyiesta, on 11/06/2008, -1/+18Being vague is and uninformative is the mark of a true politician.
I do like this one though:
"We will fire government managers who aren't getting results, we will cut funding for programs that are wasting your money, we will use technology and lessons from the private sector to improve efficiency across every level of government." - Chickenlip, on 11/06/2008, -1/+16"To restore America's competitiveness, we must recruit a new generation of science and technology leaders by investing in diversity."
LOL ... the tech sector needs more white people in it ... 9/10 software or hardware engineers are Chinese or Indian ... next up are the russians, behind them, the Scandinavians ... Tech is PLENTY diverse. - inajeep, on 11/06/2008, -2/+14"We will fire government managers who aren't getting results, we will cut funding for programs that are wasting your money, we will use technology and lessons from the private sector to improve efficiency across every level of government."
Looks like the unemployment rates will triple. ;-)
These are all fine goals. Pulling off 1/4 of them will take a miracle. - bradac56, on 11/06/2008, -1/+9Agreed sound bits are not the same as real answers.
- defwheezer, on 11/06/2008, -1/+9Translation: "I will fire ALL 'managers' appointed by the idiot Bush."
- poog99, on 11/06/2008, -2/+10At least he doesn't think the internet is a set of tubes
- captainbethany, on 11/06/2008, -2/+9Dugg for the picture.
- SmpleJohn, on 11/06/2008, -0/+6Listen, I didn't vote for the guy either, but what are any of these politicians really going to do. At least he will win the respect of our country back. I don't agree with most of his policies, but I'll take a bullet for my President any day of the week.
- busybrain, on 11/06/2008, -1/+7It's all meaningless fluff until something is done about any one of the issues mentioned.
He's elected already, you don't have to keep making him out to be Superman. I would love nothing other than to have the mighty Obama come through on his promises. - duewydo, on 11/06/2008, -0/+6* Pointing to President Kennedy's challenge to put a man on the moon, Mr. Obama said: "I will set big goals for this country as president - some so large that the technology to reach them does not yet exist."
huh. O.K. *taking notes.
I will check back and we will see... (hoping for results!) - PennFarmer, on 11/06/2008, -0/+6Why are we interested in diversity? Why aren't we more interested in results? What happened to being color blind?
- alais, on 11/06/2008, -7/+12Empty suit babble.
- scrumdiddly, on 11/06/2008, -0/+5http://digg.com/2008_us_elections/Palin_Didn_t_Kno ... Having a little look through Digg before posting that comment would have saved you so much embarassment.
- ultraseamus, on 11/06/2008, -0/+4Lol, sarcasm? The whole point of setting goals for the future is that we are not capable of meeting them now. I am sure NASA has had a goal to put a man on Mars for years now. All forums of research and development are striving to meet goals which we do not currently have the technology to complete. Real time raytracing is a goal for which the technology does not yet exist. That quote is nothing more then vague political fluff, now that he has the presidency at least wait until he does something real before bringing back out the pom-poms.
- chadsmith729, on 11/06/2008, -1/+5I think it's a great thing to say, but with all the other issues going on at the moment it's difficult for me to realistically consider him being able to do more than one or two of the list. I wish him the best of luck and being in the technology field I will help as much as I can. Keep in mind Obama, open source is where I feel the school forces should be moving. Least that's my opinion, given the advancements in Ubuntu and Kubuntu it's really promising.
- sethpr, on 11/06/2008, -0/+3You're misunderstanding, by diversity he means more women... Yay!!!!
- inactive, on 11/06/2008, -0/+3Well, let's tack these on to the 500 other things he's promised to get done in office.
Promises = things you haven't done yet.
Actually do something first, then I'll take notice. Until then, you might as well promise each American $100,000. - JCEEZ, on 11/06/2008, -1/+4Well the other option was "I admit, I don't know how to send email"
- Brian48216, on 11/06/2008, -1/+4Quotes from campaign speeches are retarded. Campaign speeches are dumbed down for the lowest common denominator.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m4yVlPqeZwo
if you really wanted to have an idea of his tech policies. - temujin2012, on 11/06/2008, -2/+5It's good to have a president that understands how to utilize technology, and those closest to it, to achieve the goals they've set out for. There is much evidence in how he ran his campaign and the "unconventional" avenues with which he fired up voters.
- r0b1, on 11/06/2008, -3/+6"I will set big goals for this country as president - some so large that the technology to reach them does not yet exist."
Wow, now that's change I can believe in! GOBAMA! - Aethirig, on 11/06/2008, -1/+4Sounds like typical manager-speak to me. I'd type more, but I need to go proactively leverage some product synergy.
And of course, I'm always twirling, twirling, twirling towards freedom. - ultraseamus, on 11/06/2008, -0/+3Heh, yep. It will be a slow change, but it will happen. No president ever lives up to their "hype", and it is always in style to bash the current president. Unless Obama truly reveals himself to be superman, Digg will turn against him.
- PennFarmer, on 11/06/2008, -0/+2Note to defwheezer - the President isn't actually that involved in the lower level staffing in the government. Most of these managers are going nowhere . They have been around since Reagan and don't really care who is President. they are the true bureaucracy and are not really attached to any president. Obama's not going to fire them. This is so much pandering speech.
"Programs that are wasting your money"? Sounds like a good definition for the US Government to me. - TheInformer, on 11/06/2008, -5/+7Oh... My... God.
People being critical of Obama and not being digg-bombed to oblivion? Things have changed.
Appropriate that he's standing beside another cartoon character. - xsecretfiles, on 11/06/2008, -3/+5Promises
- built2spill, on 11/06/2008, -4/+6I've never loved a president before, and it's been a long time since I liked one. I have a good feeling about this. Go Barack!
- frequentFlyer, on 11/06/2008, -0/+2"the tech sector needs more white people in it"
I think that's what Obama meant, actually. - inactive, on 11/06/2008, -3/+5His most famous quote: "If the ride is more fly, then you must buy."
Oh wait. That was Snoop Dogg. I keep getting them mixed up. - Kate1240, on 11/06/2008, -4/+6He is a god! I totally worship him.
- inactive, on 11/06/2008, -0/+2Final Election results:
Obama - 364 electoral votes
McCain - 162 electoral votes
Winner - Obama, + 202 electoral votes
Popular Election results:
Obama - 63,687,862
McCain - 56,283,891
Winner - Obama, + 7,403,881 - defwheezer, on 11/06/2008, -0/+2Going to Mars was all the idiot Bush could come up with (too much TV). On the other hand, creating a challenge to develop and commercialize 'clean energy' is something most people can actually get excited about and involved in. Or universal broadband. Or safe nuclear energy. Or a functioning Government. Or...
- UberNick, on 11/06/2008, -0/+2I would be happy to settle with "who can speak English without a very, very thick accent and without peppering each sentence with grammar errors".
Sorry; I have nothing against the foreign-born nor against accents in general, but a group full of standard tech people makes my daily conference calls ***** INCOMPREHENSIBLE. - theaceoffire, on 11/06/2008, -0/+1Sounds like a good plan to me.
Half of them barely know what their job is supposed to be, much less how to do it well. - d03boy, on 11/06/2008, -0/+1You don't think he was posing? I bet you voted for him, too.
- d03boy, on 11/06/2008, -0/+1What does Bush have to do with Obama? How is that even remotely relevant in this conversation? Do reply.
- duewydo, on 11/06/2008, -0/+1Not sure what I am supposed to do in order to "get involved" with his setting of goals. What I ment was I will check back later to see if he sets goals.(I'm not going to stick it to him) Maybe I should write my congress man and stand on congress demanding he sets these goals. *rolls eyes
- PennFarmer, on 11/06/2008, -0/+1More women is fine, but I am still mainly concerned about results. I don't care what race or sex. I would be fine with an all black all female staff or with an all white all male staff or any mix of any set so long as they perform. Unfortunately that doesn't fly in America today.
- eigenweasel, on 11/06/2008, -0/+1There's one technology quote from Obama I'm not at all surprised they omitted:
"I will slow the development of our future combat systems."
Somewhere in a cave, someone rubbed their hands in glee when they heard this. - d03boy, on 11/06/2008, -0/+1qft
- Acglaphotis, on 11/06/2008, -0/+1Huh? I did... I was just wondering about the superman statue, I haven't really seen a superhero statue before... Sorry if that makes me a troll :/.
- Greengoo, on 11/06/2008, -0/+1and as always, ENGLAND PREVAILS!
- harlowsmonkeys, on 11/06/2008, -0/+1The funny part about that whole incident was that it shows the ignorance of the average internet user, not the ignorance of Stevens. Pretty much every expert on how the internet works has used an analogy to pipes to explain it to students, the press, or ordinary people. The only mistake Stevens made was to say "tubes" instead of "pipes", which is a trivial error. Other than that goof, Stevens' tube speech was a reasonably accurate layman level description of the technology.
- theendlessnow, on 11/06/2008, -0/+1Which one is Obama though?
- coolearl, on 11/06/2008, -0/+1I think you meant: GO BAMA! ROLL TIDE!!!
- kanningt, on 11/07/2008, -0/+1No, it's not. Stevens is stupid. And I have a sneaking suspicion that you are Stevens. Therefore you are stupid.
- PennFarmer, on 11/06/2008, -0/+1I'm actually more interested in the execution myself. I don't vote for people based on the idea that their statements sound great. I vote for them on the idea that I like what they stand for and believe they will actually get it done. Being the president is not like being a Christmas present that's a little off. For one thing, it's not even Thanksgiving yet.
- chadsmith729, on 11/06/2008, -0/+1Ever heard of sourceforge, PHP, Linux? What do they all have in common? They are all open source and have developers like myself and thousands of others that are contributing to the project(s). I mean really, there are a LOT of good projects on sourceforge alone that can really help out. Heck look at phpmyadmin, fckeditor, or sugarcrm, or any countless ones that are (or used to be) on sourceforge. I'll continue to keep developing in the ways I know best to help. Thanks.
