- Vadi0, on 09/14/2008, -4/+35Good list but font smoothing can be enabled via System - Preferences - Appearance - Fonts, without a terminal.
- Wugie, on 09/15/2008, -9/+301) Install something
- c8h8r8i8s8, on 09/15/2008, -1/+18Awesome! My GRUB menu was getting pretty insane.
- thedragon4453, on 09/15/2008, -1/+14See, Windows users get too used to Add/remove being a worthless pile. When I first started on Ubuntu, it took a second to figure out how to add new programs because I wanted to go to the site and download. So I went to the site, downloaded tarballs, and then had no idea what to do with it.
Of course, then I figured out Add/remove, and facepalmed. - RoboDonut, on 09/15/2008, -1/+14I don't see what you're trying to say.
95% of this stuff is easier in Ubuntu than it is in Windows/Mac.
I don't even think that it's possible to set the default email client to the GMail web interface in Windows. I'm pretty sure it needs to be a dedicated email application. - TeacherOfHeroes, on 09/15/2008, -0/+12@AppleMacStudAppleMacStud
That panel (which appears to be the Gnome panel) has been a conceptual part (if not the same code) of Gnome since its beginnings in the late '90s - before OS X was released. Just because it can have large icons and semi-transparency doesn't mean its a mac rip-off
As for it's functionality, that dock in OS X isn't anything new - its just a newer version of a very old idea. Probably the most notable example of something that predates it is the Win98 Taskbar+Quicklaunch. Not as elegant, but its the same idea.
It's one thing to enjoy the OS of your choice, and to talk about its nice qualities - its quite another thing to call everything else a rip-off when - surprising;y - they have similar functionality/appearance. There are only so many ways to do something, and there are only so many ways to make something look nice.
Here are some (fairly) recent examples of predating implementations of a dock/panel interface:
OS/2 Warp 4 (1996) - http://toastytech.com/guis/bigos24.gif
Windows 98 (1998) - http://toastytech.com/guis/win98desk.gif
KDE 1.0 (1998) - http://toastytech.com/guis/mkdenewmenu.png
Gnome 1.0.x (1999) - http://www.midwestlinux.com/products/suse/gnome.gi ...
RiscOS 4 (1999) - http://toastytech.com/guis/bigriscos4.jpg
Hell, apple wasn't even the first one to have an angled dock:

- sloppychris, on 09/15/2008, -2/+13"Applications > Add / Remove Programs" too complicated?
- PatrickBrown, on 09/15/2008, -0/+10You are on the wrong website I think.
- Chicken, on 09/15/2008, -4/+13Shut up! Typing stuff in the CLI gives the linux users nerdgasms.
- Acglaphotis, on 09/15/2008, -0/+9Would have worked if this wasn't the Linux/Unix section. Nice try, though.

- coldkill3r, on 09/15/2008, -1/+9Very nice list for newbies, great job.
- thevoiceless, on 09/15/2008, -0/+8Um...that's called a panel. The person just doesn't have it expanded all the way to the edges of the screen. It's not "Mac styled", that's what it looks like.
- x713, on 09/15/2008, -7/+15If you don't like linux gtfo trolls. You guys spend too much of your time on here spreading fud.
- RoboDonut, on 09/15/2008, -0/+7There's many types of Linux users. Yes, there is a small group that fits your discription. They, however, are not the majority, and generalizing Linux users as "rebellious kids who can't afford Macs" is absurd. For every one of them, there is at least five sysadmins/programmers/scientists/engineers who use Linux for more sensible reasons.
- kylere, on 09/15/2008, -0/+7A persistent USB Install is much better, 8.04 has some problems with a bad initrd.gz and syslinux.cfg but http://www.pendrivelinux.com/2008/05/08/usb-ubuntu ... has a walk thru that will get you past it.
- kylemech, on 09/15/2008, -0/+6How about using two (or more) monitors. If you could make that easy for me, I'd finish taking the dive. So far it's just my laptop.
- davidlick, on 09/15/2008, -0/+6Wow, yours is actually getting the hang of it?!
My moms calls me about 4 times a day asking about something. The hard part about it is she doesn't even know how to describe the problem she's having, so it's insanely frustrating trying to tell her that yes, Firefox is different from IE, but it's a good different. And yes it does go to the same web pages. - pcghost, on 09/15/2008, -1/+7Keep in mind that simply removing the entries from menu.lst will only work if the related kernel images are removed from /boot. Otherwise upon the next kernel upgrade the file will be re-populated with the list of images found in boot.

- ncjasen, on 09/15/2008, -0/+4I have 8800 card and dual monitor works fine in ubuntu. The app envy makes installing nvidia or ati drivers real easy.
- awiesner, on 09/15/2008, -1/+5how about playing a flash video while listening to music? or having programs not crash as much?
- OCPaul, on 09/15/2008, -0/+4So he can brag to his homegirl johndavidjack
- Sean23, on 09/15/2008, -1/+5Yeah, I found that out just by looking around the first day I installed Ubuntu.
- ephemere, on 09/15/2008, -3/+7You just don't get it, do you? Try working in IT sometime. Regular users can't figure out how to do ***** in Windows, either. If you don't give them a shiny icon on their desktop, the program doesn't even exist to them. Most of your run-of-the-mill office drones know which buttons to click to do their job and that's it. If you sat them down and told them they had to do these same 10 things in Windows, you'd get blank stares.
- OCPaul, on 09/15/2008, -0/+4There is tutorial how to get rid of trashcan on windows also. Donno why u complaining. loL
- silfiriel, on 09/15/2008, -0/+3nice article, not the usual "ubuntu rocks stuff", but actually some helpful things. (although most ubuntu users know more then half of this tips)
- cesclaveria, on 09/15/2008, -0/+3that really is up to having the right drivers for your video card, at least on KDE if your drivers are ok enabling a second monitor is just a click away (on the system settings menu)
- dilbert, on 09/18/2008, -0/+3Zenulator, for trying to ruin people's GNU/Linux system you win the Block-This-User award. Enjoy!
- antdude, on 09/15/2008, -0/+3Not to me. I don't have a big screen (still using a 15 years old 21" CRT TV). I do other things beside gaming on my PC. I love mods, hacking, etc.
- fejy, on 09/15/2008, -0/+3uninstalling pulseaudio will likely fix both of those o_O

because screwing up font hinting makes the font worse, not better. maybe he should get proper glasses instead. - bobbarkerbilly, on 09/15/2008, -0/+2So then create shiny icons to programs on the gnome desktop. Problem solved.

Wow! OS/2 Warp 4 actually had a really cool idea. I wish people would bring something like the "Tab LaunchPad" thing, and that right side bar thing back to OS's.
The closest thing that I can think of from recent memory is the App interface for the OLPX's design, but even then, that took up the entire screen and didn't list how much hard drive space was being taken up, etc. - SeafoodSoop, on 09/15/2008, -5/+7You are so awkward.
- csrster, on 09/15/2008, -0/+275) How to make ubuntu run insanely fast on old hardware:
