- Darkspam004, on 12/06/2008, -5/+47Nothing to do with the economy.
- DangerCollie, on 12/06/2008, -3/+38We use Linux in our company and it works. All of our servers and the majority of our desktops. We meet our development deadlines, no one is crying about not being able to get their work done. Not only do we save a lot of money, it's a luxury.
- inactive, on 12/06/2008, -15/+3511. Better than windows no matter the economy.
- IphtashuFitz, on 12/06/2008, -1/+19Better title: "10 Reasons to Choose Linux"
- Cupantae, on 12/06/2008, -5/+20Very convincing. This should probably mention that it's less likely that computers be comprimised and have to be set up again
Also, "Multiple Distributions - I've heard this one used as a negative part of a campaign by Microsoft claiming that there are too many Linux distributions." - Really? Was this before or after Vista was released? - Olfster, on 12/06/2008, -1/+15We do also. We stopped purchasing MS product upgrades and all older machines have been outfitted with linux. Of course all servers are linux. We have also done away with new purchases of MS Office. We now work with Open Office. We are really seeing a huge cost savings by doing this. We have tested new laptops with Vista and after a dismal experience, on the part of the end user, we have wiped them clean and installed Ubuntu.
- smotpoker, on 12/06/2008, -1/+15In many cases, though not always, that is true
- DiscoUnderpants, on 12/06/2008, -3/+16I find windows people, who seem to go out of their way, contribute this comment on every Linux thread. I really dont care one way or another what anyone uses. I use many OSes (Linux, OSX, WInXP/2k3/2k8, Solaris) just about every day. Why are you so bothered about people suggesting that others use Linux? You came to this discussion to basically say you didnt want to be a part of it.
- d0nkeym0nkey, on 12/06/2008, -4/+17A netbook is always cheaper with Linux. That's all i need.
- 4321234, on 12/06/2008, -2/+15Can I leave you some literature?
- computershack, on 12/06/2008, -9/+21utter ***** bollocks.
10: Yes, to 1% of the desktop market. Companies who want to run Linux on their servers already are. Those who aren't have paid Windows Server licences and changing would cost a *****.
9: Current Linux distros have HIGHER minimum requirements than XP.
8: *****. Hardware drivers are not available as soon as a new bit of kit hits the market. At best, they're a few months behind, at worst, none at all.
7: Only one that's right.
6: Having multiple distros is a sysadmins nightmare in the corporate environment.
5: Companies don't give a flying ***** about it being open source. They are only interested in knowing if it works.
4: ROFLMFAO. The devs will reply if they can be arsed. You can submit a bug report but it doesn't mean anything will be done.
3: Same with Windows Server.
2: Linux still isn't fully compatible with Windows, especially the examples you give.
1: I'm bored now... - bromac, on 12/06/2008, -5/+16Yes, because the market always influences my technical decisions. *face palm*
Next up! 10 Reasons to Choose Hard Liquor over Beer in a Bad Economy. - mrsteveman1, on 12/06/2008, -0/+10Reason 1, more bang for your buck?
- BrainInAJar, on 12/06/2008, -1/+11Seems like a better reason to choose open source in general rather than Linux in specific...
if OpenSolaris or FreeBSD suit your business needs better, use them... all the listed benefits are the same - inactive, on 12/06/2008, -0/+10There were a few games that i found i got a better framerate on wine than on windows. Lots of programs that i personally find run better in wine. Still, there are some windows programs that you just cant replace.
- seltaeb4, on 12/06/2008, -9/+19Now that no one posts Ron Paul articles every seventeen seconds, I'm glad the Linux community is here to pick up the slack.
- scy1192, on 12/06/2008, -5/+14WINE runs Windows programs better than Windows with less overhead? Really, now?
- kamahl928, on 12/06/2008, -0/+8compiz-fusion is already there to wow anyone who looks
- roxgod666, on 12/06/2008, -0/+7Half of these are reasons why Linux is better than the others...not really a reason because of the economy.
- PHJames88, on 12/06/2008, -4/+11I like Linux perople.
- smotpoker, on 12/06/2008, -0/+7Unfamiliarity, ignorance of what they bought at time of purchase and "requiring" specific win32 apps are the most frequent speculations I've seen, why?
- prodigitalson, on 12/06/2008, -1/+7Ive never had ana issue with hardware support excpet in the case of a wireless card. And in my most recent install, Ubuntu/Hardy, it worked out of the box. I suppose if you got "fringe" components it might be an issue, but for your average desktop user i dont see that as an issue anymore, especially if youre ordering a preinstalled Dell or the like.
I do agree with your comment about each having benefits and drawbacks though. - snurfle, on 12/06/2008, -1/+7That depends... Vista Starter, Home Basic, Home Premium, Business, Enterprise, or Ultimate?
- PHJames88, on 12/06/2008, -3/+8To be fair, a lot of Linux users are overly-enthusiastic about pushing it on people. You're right, a lot of Windows users here do go out of their way to denounce Linux, but so do Linux users to denounce Windows.
Personally, I use Ubuntu for everything except gaming, but I don't recommend it or any other distro to anyone unless I know they can handle the hurdles which can present. - Slade605, on 12/06/2008, -2/+7My place of business is a "Microsoft Certified Silver Partner." Linux/Firefox is highly frowned upon. I want a new job.
- smotpoker, on 12/06/2008, -1/+6Not exactly, Linux has more hardware and FOSS [community] support than any other OS
- mrsteveman1, on 12/06/2008, -0/+5omg you are cool
- amoeba, on 12/06/2008, -1/+5We also use linux for all our servers and desktops. 100+ staff. The company just keeps on growing.
- PhailQuail, on 12/07/2008, -1/+5You threw your money down the drain when you bought Windows.
- harlowsmonkeys, on 12/06/2008, -5/+9It's not clear if he's talking about home use or business use, so I'll assume both.
8. Windows gets device drivers, from the device manufacturer, shipped with the device.
6. This one is just stupid. The fact that some cell phones use Linux is *completely* *irrelevant* when it comes to choosing a home or business system.
5. Almost no business is interested in making and supporting their own forks of the kernel or major applications. That quickly becomes a major time sink and internal support nightmare.
4. See #1. #1 exists because #4 is woefully inadequate.
3. So, the author ignores critical kernel security patches, or only runs Linux on systems that aren't exposed to outside world. That's the only way to get uptimes measured in years.
1. Oops. There goes the alleged price advantage.
This seems to have been yet another lame list written by someone who dabbles in Linux, probably flitting from distribution to distribution, and has no clue about running real-world production systems. - shagmin, on 12/07/2008, -0/+4Why can't every place be at the very least, aware of Microsoft alternatives. My very first IT related job, I mentioned switching to Linux at work and my boss replies "I doubt we'll ever use that, I heard it has a bug".
- jcaino, on 12/06/2008, -0/+3Exactly. FreeBSD in widespread use here - ~3,000 servers.
- inactive, on 12/06/2008, -1/+4I work at a place that uses IBM mainframes. We program with NATURAL and the database is Adabas. I was never in the operators room, so i dont know a whole lot about the actual OS's or anything. I know that as long as we can get logged into the mainframe, they wouldent care a whole lot about which OS we are using. Maybe i should try to convince them to move to linux on the desktops.
- MattBD, on 12/07/2008, -0/+3Actually that was incorrect. More of the Linux ones were returned, but a LOT more were sold. Most people don't care about the OS as long as it works. The Eee PC's default tabbed interface is far more intuitive than Windows.
- Smegzor, on 12/06/2008, -2/+5"9: Current Linux distros have HIGHER minimum requirements than XP."
Thats BS. Name one and show your proof. - mckooiker, on 12/07/2008, -0/+3I find your comment "f*" pointless. I'm happy the world isn't as black and white as you describe it, consiting of 2 groups: "techies" or "non-techies".
Why do people start complaining immedeately if they see some GNU/Linux based article? Don't read them, or better: Stay with the Windows section, or even better: go to reddit. - PhailQuail, on 12/07/2008, -1/+4Don't forget the 64-bit versions of each of those.
- cjnkns, on 12/07/2008, -1/+4I love my Linux lappy and linux in general. But, one big problem I have is Linux applications.
Sure Linux as ***** of applications you can install. But, MOST suck compared to the Windows equivalent.
Good luck trying to figure out the names of these applications too. gtkPod, Kklipper WTF? Those are names my 14 year old daughter would make up for an application.
I realize this is might not be a big deal to most , but Windows Vista out of the box looks beautiful!
Gnome looks like a big pile of ***** on first install. I spend hours on end trying to get my linux box to look just right .
With Vista I rpetty much like it theway it is. I know it's a petty issue, but for me it is still an issue. - inactive, on 12/06/2008, -1/+4I have found the apple fanboys to be rampant litely. In the last 3 month's front page apple stories have went through the roof.
- cliffzdude, on 12/06/2008, -6/+9But a great reason for a 'Nix circle jerk.

- inactive, on 12/06/2008, -2/+4At least someone understands life cycle management and business drivers. Who gives a crap about what OS you use as long as it gets the job done? IT is about service delivery, not about putting 19 spinners on your OS.
- mckooiker, on 12/07/2008, -0/+2Just block the Linux section in your Digg account, it's not that difficult is it?
- mrsteveman1, on 12/06/2008, -1/+3That was my thought, people are going to expect to be able to buy a computer and install win32 programs on it. Then again people deal with win vs mac programs all the time when they have a mac, so im sure people will adjust, problem is there isn't a commercial software market for Linux for a lot of things and some of the FOSS equivalents aren't very good.
Unfamiliarity isn't so much a problem if the interface is intuitive which some of them have tried to do, hell even WinMo OEMs replace the interface with their own sometimes. - LinuxSmooth, on 12/07/2008, -0/+2I'm pathetic because I'm reading about stuff that interest me and I have a personal opinion that Linux is better than Windows? umm... aren't you the pathetic one for posting comments on a topic that obviously doesn't concern you? It's not like I go on pro-Windows topics and throw F bombs and vulgar insults around.
Oh, and I really DO believe these topics help Linux. Why? Because I'm a casual digger and sadly I only read the front page. One day, I saw all these "idiotic articles" on the front page about Linux and started to become interested. Shortly after, I removed XP and dove into the wonderful world of Linux. I have not regretted it once. I'm pretty sure this has happened to other people as well. That is all I want to say, I'm not going to comment back with insults and what not because that's not who I am. I know it's hard to do on the internet, but please show some respect and understanding when you post something. - colincornaby, on 12/07/2008, -1/+3I run all the OS's, and I try to love them all, but every time I fire up my Ubuntu virtual machine I feel the urge to slam my head against the table. I want to update and suddenly it's downloading 800 packages all from different servers and half the time it can't download one of the packages so it complains and errors. Out of Windows and OS X, Linux gives me the most trouble. I don't think I could possibly move to it for day to day use, so for now, it just lives in a VM I use to host various servers.
- mckooiker, on 12/07/2008, -0/+2Even if you just bought a computer with Windows pre-installed, you DID pay for software. There isn't a seperate price tag on computers, but you do pay for Windows if you buy one.
That's the absurdity in my eyes. I want freedom to choose, to have the computer with or without Windows. For more than ten years people were forced to buy their computer with windows installed.
Fortunately, since a few years thing are slowly changing, a development that has been accellerated by netbooks last year..... - mckooiker, on 12/07/2008, -0/+29: Current Linux distros have HIGHER minimum requirements than XP.
Excuse me.....I thought the CURRENT Windows version was Vista and not XP.....
6: Having multiple distros is a sysadmins nightmare in the corporate environment.
The article doesn't state that in the same corporate environment different distro's should be available.... But two different corporate environments might have different needs and therefore might choose two different distro's. Nothing wrong with the author's statement.....
5: Companies don't give a flying ***** about it being open source. They are only interested in knowing if it works.
Good reason not to choose the virus/malware vulnerable Windows....
4: ROFLMFAO. The devs will reply if they can be arsed. You can submit a bug report but it doesn't mean anything will be done.
In that case, since it is open source you can fork the program, hire some cheap Indian developer (for example) that will make the changes you want and in the long run it will be cheaper than any proprietary solution......
3: Same with Windows Server.
WOW, windows server is as stable as linux now? I start wondering again why Linux is installed on so many servers as compared to Windows servers.....
1: I'm bored now...
Can't stand the truth? - cheeseplease, on 12/08/2008, -0/+2Should I digg you up for having a point or digg you down for being a moron...
