If you can't answer that one, stay on Windows or OS-X. - DontThinkSo, on 05/22/2009, -0/+17A lot has changed in a few years. On a modern linux system, the computer would *come* with an instant messenger with support for all of the popular networks (and several you've never heard of).

- jamesmcm, on 05/22/2009, -4/+18Don't buy DRM'd media and hardware then.
This isn't a problem with GNU/Linux but with the companies using such restrictions. - udayd, on 05/22/2009, -0/+13on modern linux you could use pidgin which does yahoo, icq, irc, google, msn, etc.
- beers, on 05/22/2009, -0/+11 they could've skipped the entire question list. these questions apply to pretty much anything.

- FastZ, on 05/22/2009, -0/+7#10: Do some of your employees fit the Linux user experience more than others?
It's funny. The company I work for has a few people who will call the helpdesk and I hear them ask, "I can't log into Outlook". Apparently these folks think Outlook is the operating system.
People who have never been interested in having their computers do anything more than email and web surfing are probably not the type who will enjoy Linux like it can be enjoyed. - Chrysalii, on 05/22/2009, -0/+6But it's already come....multiple times.

"Don't buy any DVDs from the store"
Fixed that for you. - DigitalPioneer, on 05/22/2009, -1/+7'Cause they all know you're too white and nerdy...
- virtualmode, on 05/22/2009, -0/+6never had any problems with unmounting (=safe removal) of thumb drives in Ubuntu. So this article is a big surprise for me.

- ethana2, on 05/22/2009, -0/+5These seem to be enterprise migration questions, not end user migration questions.
- sharee74oy, on 05/22/2009, -3/+8Instead of fully migrating it is better to use 2 OS - Win and Linux on 1 PC
- MWeather, on 05/22/2009, -1/+6Linux supports blu-ray drives.
- beers, on 05/22/2009, -1/+6always is a long long time.
competition is good. - ethana2, on 05/22/2009, -0/+4Software, probably not stuff that uses DirectX 9.0c or DX10. The WINE application database can give you more specific answers. I've played Halo on Ubuntu.
Hardware, not stuff from Creative, or the MagicJack, or some printers. Screw those companies.
Not compatible with Monster A/V cables. You'll need a mac for that. - d66kid, on 05/22/2009, -1/+5windows in non-conformist indeed
- MWeather, on 05/22/2009, -1/+5And they'll absolutely hate Windows.
- JQP123, on 05/22/2009, -1/+5Question #1 should be, "Why switch?".
Any migration without a complete and thorough answer is not advisable. Is it to save money? Increase productivity? Or because you feel that open source is "better"?
Be prepared for followup questions. For example, how much can be reduce our IT budget as a result of this? Can we reduce our head count due to the increased productivity? If you can't reduce costs somewhere, then there are no real, hard savings so how do you justify the upheavel? - MWeather, on 05/22/2009, -1/+5"That's not a real ***** answer to the problem."
Yes, it is. It's the only solution that will fix this problem on all platforms. - udayd, on 05/22/2009, -3/+6#10 is so off. i work for a company that's all about open source, but i think that linux is not for everyone, especially not someone who specializes in web browser work.
as a web developer, i can't test on IE with it (and i know IE sucks, but I have to test on it) and it doesn't have helpful things like photoshop, dreamweaver, or flash. i've heard all the arguments for GIMP and various web development tools on linux (like bluefish), but neither even comes close to what photoshop and dreamweaver do in terms of capability or increasing my level of productivity.
i'm all for open source, but i can't switch because my productivity falls through the floor and the tools just aren't there yet for web development, in my opinion. - gamepr0, on 05/22/2009, -1/+4you didn't read what he said, did you?
where's your photoshop photoshop alternative?
how will he have to test in IE? - wallclimber, on 05/23/2009, -0/+3He writes: "Of course, if the proprietary software is Web-based, you can probably go ahead because Firefox is on par with Explorer."
On par with Explorer??? Is he serious? If the Internet was a golf course, Firefox, Chrome, Opera and Safari would be PGA champions with Internet Explorer being little more than a caddy, a sub-par one at that. - thecheatah, on 05/22/2009, -2/+5You see the PC commercials by microsoft? Do you see the Mac commercials? If you want a computer google its model and check how compatible it is with linux. If it is 100%, well my friend you have just got a very cheap, highly reliable computer.
Enjoy! - Smokezz, on 05/22/2009, -1/+4You lost your friends because you couldn't get on Yahoo? Wow, that's pretty pathetic.
- ethana2, on 05/22/2009, -0/+3Ubuntu aims to be easier to use than Mac OS X.
In many ways, it already is. Each release gets closer.
Take your FUD and shove it. - JQP123, on 05/22/2009, -1/+4"Then again, I do most of my stuff in a text editor with nothing more than highlighting."
And everyone knows that a text editor works so much better and faster with Linux. - JQP123, on 05/22/2009, -0/+2"No one ever goes to a buffet and says I'm not going to eat because there are too many choices"
No one ever says it because they've never encountered this situation. The choices at most buffets are limited and for obvious reasons --- supporting too many is simply not cost effective. More choice *can be* good --- but only if the benefits outweigh the cost. - explodingzebras, on 05/22/2009, -0/+2you can use IE on Linux -- just try IEs4Linux http://www.tatanka.com.br/ies4linux/page/Main_Page - i have used this myself with IE6 and 7 and you can use both versions unlike WIndows where you are stuck with the one installed. I have also ran Safari under Wine.
- MWeather, on 05/22/2009, -0/+2"as a web developer, i can't test on IE with it"
So use a virtual machine. You need a virtual machine on Windows to test all versions of IE, why not do the same with Linux?
"the tools just aren't there yet for web development, in my opinion."
There are plenty of great IDEs for Linux. Dreamweaver is a toy. Use a real IDE. Even if you stay with Windows you should at least be using Visual Studio.
As for Photoshop, it runs just fine on Linux. - stix213, on 05/22/2009, -0/+2Sounds like you haven't used Linux since around 2006. Unless you are doing something pretty advanced or obscure, there really isn't much fussing around needed anymore for any of the distros targeted as home desktop users.
- MattBD, on 05/23/2009, -0/+2If you want a BSD-based system PC-BSD is probably your best bet - it's a desktop oriented distribution based on FreeBSD. For another good Unix-like OS I'd also recommend OpenSolaris - it's not far behind modern Linux distros in ease of use and is based on the same code base as Sun Solaris.
However, I will say a Linux distro is a better choice for most people switching away from Windows for the first time. Ubuntu or Linux Mint is a good choice if you want to go down that route. - stix213, on 05/22/2009, -0/+1It has been possible to run blu-ray on Ubuntu since Feisty with a few tweaks.
- Toshibi, on 05/23/2009, -0/+1The Gimp works wonderfully for everything I do. I mean, if you're just making something to slap up on the web it will do, not like you're having to do print work. As for IE, just run it in WINE. That has worked for a while. A long while.
- NeonDistraction, on 05/22/2009, -0/+1What if my computer is only 94% compatible? Will it still work?
- quantumstatejim, on 05/23/2009, -0/+1I also didn't know about removable media being a problem and I use Ubuntu. I have found no problems at all with removable media.
- YourNameHere1, on 05/22/2009, -0/+1Dual boot since 2006. I usually use Linux, but I keep Vista around for anything that doesn't fully work in my Linux OS like my HP webcam with integrated microphone. I also think the sound quality is better in Vista64 than it is with alsa or the better sounding oss4.
- MWeather, on 05/22/2009, -0/+1It would if it wasn't bugged.
- tao52nyc, on 05/24/2009, -0/+1Linux migrations will fail for one reason: end users. They have been so abused by Windows for so long, they suffer from Stockholm Syndrome, and see no way out. Meanwhile IT Drones, whose entire livelihood the past 20 years is due to Bill Gates' crapware, are not going to even contemplate changing. Linux doesn't help it's cause by its failure to have any sort of unifying vision. Pick a distro, go with it, support it unto death, and get over yourselves.
- inactive, on 08/27/2009, -0/+111. Why would I ever do this, my current OS is just fine?
12. Why does no one else use this?
13. -100? can we do it? - Frayed_Knot, on 05/24/2009, -0/+1That's a good question assuming someone has also asked, "Why are we using Windows (or whatever) now?"
I was using Windows only because it's what I had always used. Once I thought about it, I realized there was nothing standing in the way of me switching to linux. - Frayed_Knot, on 05/24/2009, -0/+1Just boot to a live CD and find out.
How hard is that? - amoore2600, on 05/22/2009, -0/+1Intel graphics chipsets and audio chipsets just doesn't cut itfor 9.04.
- inactive, on 05/22/2009, -0/+1 I researched Linux for six months before I doge in...I never looked back and am very happy with it.
I've ran Linux as my main OS for 4 years.
I recommend Mepis,Mint, Fedora and Cosmosis for beginners. -
