- fsamuels, on 10/01/2008, -0/+25Spelled and linked to "Pidgen" instead of "Pidgin". Whoops!
- infernal6, on 10/02/2008, -0/+14I wish, for once, these Linux lists would have software that everyone doesn't know about...
- johngarcia, on 10/02/2008, -1/+12Pidgin isn't related specifically to Linux. It will run on Windows and all Unix platforms. Also, Pidgin would get auto-corrected to Pigeon not Pidgen. I think that was just a dumb mistake.
- cgibbo, on 10/02/2008, -1/+10#1. vi
EOF - wisam, on 10/02/2008, -0/+6There's no mention of LaTeX or even LyX. And no, I'm not trying to act as a di-hard Linux user but anybody who wrote a paper or a thesis or a long report know how pain in the ass WYSIWYG word processors are.
- Phocion55, on 10/02/2008, -0/+4Block the Linux section.
I did the same with the Political and Election sections as to avoid whackjob sensationalized Huffington Post spam.
Believe me...it works wonders. - onCALL258, on 10/02/2008, -1/+4OpenOffice.org is great and is compatible with windows and linux, so it can assist in a transfer from Microsoft Applications to FOSS.
- nickdot, on 10/02/2008, -0/+3I like TaskCoach: http://www.taskcoach.org/
- takatoo, on 10/02/2008, -4/+7lol pidgen
I bet the writer doesn't know much about Linux
or it could be some dumb auto-correct errors. - JQP123, on 10/02/2008, -0/+3"We’re going to look at applications that will satisfy everyone in the organization — from HR to marketing to the front office."
Payroll?
Show me a Linux app that *competently* addresses US payroll. By *competently*, I mean something that supports common payroll requirements such as NACHA based direct deposit or taxes in multiple states (for people who live near the border in one state but work in the other).
Payroll is one of the most common business applications. Any business with employees needs it and won't remain in business for long without. Yet the available options for Linux are limited to say the least. - subgeniusd, on 10/02/2008, -1/+4I still think Abiword is just fine for basic/intermediate word processing.
- CoolLinuxGuy, on 10/02/2008, -0/+3I work in an office and use Open Office daily, and no not for typing memos, I use it for spreadsheets, presentations, database, etc. and Open Office is a near replacement for M$ Office. You may be getting Open Office confused with Open Office Writer.
- inactive, on 10/02/2008, -0/+3He refers to it as "Pidgin" in the same entry. I think it's just a typo.
Proofreading ftw! - acaloiar, on 10/02/2008, -0/+2I think it's important to note that some of these must have "Linux" applications would be more correctly defined as "open source" applications. Simple mistake, but somewhat misleading since open source is in no way indicative of platform. "10 Must have Open Source Applications for Linux", perhaps?
- svivian, on 10/02/2008, -0/+2Why? What advantage do you get with LaTeX? I've never seen the attraction of it.
- ommadawn, on 10/02/2008, -0/+2I suggest making lists of programs few people know about or use. For instance:
KDE PIM - KMail/Akregator/KNode. For unknown reasons people still use Thunderbird or Evolution in KDE. KDE PIM is blended seamlessly into KDE and it is really good.
Basket - what good can a note-taking application be? I'm not talking anymore, you just need to check it out. It's awesome and I mean it. It will revolutionize your workflow.
- wisam, on 10/02/2008, -0/+2A friend of mine recently used LaTeX to write his thesis. The whole thing was a breeze. He didn't waste a second in formatting. He just concentrated on writing the content. The table of contents, list of figures, list of tables and bibliography was all generated automatically. Figures were all automatically placed in convenient places.
By the way, my friend didn't have any previous LaTeX experience. The scientific community nearly use LaTeX only. Until recently, most published books used LaTeX. - chr00t, on 10/02/2008, -0/+2Dugg for not knowing Pidgin works w/sametime
- CrackyJSquirrel, on 10/02/2008, -0/+1Completely wrong, but you are entitled to think what you want.
- subgeniusd, on 10/02/2008, -0/+1Come on dude that's weak. You can troll better then that.
- CrackyJSquirrel, on 10/02/2008, -0/+1I agree about basket. I started using it and now it is on my must have list.
- Natilator3, on 10/03/2008, -0/+1Yawn...
- Jasuus, on 10/02/2008, -0/+1I seem to spend most of my office time on Firefox, yet no mention?
- LastDitchHero, on 10/02/2008, -0/+1GLOM, a pretty easy to use database creator.
- mnk0, on 10/02/2008, -1/+2yup great article, i love gnucash!! its my new addiction.
- pentiumii, on 10/03/2008, -0/+1y in hell is he being dug down for liking gimp
and sharing another digg link to tipps on it i dont understand this site - inactive, on 10/03/2008, -0/+1I'm just off to do some 'advanced' word processing.
- dugg4obscurity, on 10/02/2008, -0/+1Personally I think jGnash is better.
- mmmiiikkkeee, on 10/02/2008, -0/+1i am confused. linux is an OS and PC is a type of computer. a PC can run many OS's
for example a PC can run: mac OS X, linux, windows, bsd, etc....
so do you mean at home a 'windows PC', a 'mac OS x PC' a 'linux PC'?? it's not clear - Knet88, on 10/02/2008, -0/+1STOP WRITING COMMENTS LIKE THAT, ESPECIALLY IN CAPS....gee let me guess, tired of lists, claims that open-source software is as good as stuff you pay for, or tired of 200X being the year of linux?
I can't believe morons actually post stuff like this. - PlancksCnst, on 10/04/2008, -0/+1Start with the program called LyX.
- Knet88, on 10/02/2008, -0/+1Yeah, we expect better from our trolls
- DickMasterson2, on 10/03/2008, -0/+1Too busy trying to get back to trollin your mom...
- Garofoli, on 10/02/2008, -0/+1Yet another, eh. Buried.
- CoolLinuxGuy, on 10/02/2008, -0/+0That would go good in a list of Top 10 KDE Apps but not everyone uses the K-enviroment. The writers list will work for any desktop enviroment.
- nic777, on 10/02/2008, -1/+1GnoTime looks "ugly". Hamster does my time tracking quite well http://live.gnome.org/ProjectHamster
- mnk0, on 10/03/2008, -0/+0any particular reasons for this/? i havent tried jGnash .. but looking it up after thisre ply
- CoolLinuxGuy, on 10/02/2008, -0/+0Your comment is as good as your typing/spelling skills playa.
- crtjer, on 10/02/2008, -2/+2I like Symphony for another desktop suite.
- KhaaL, on 10/02/2008, -1/+1cool, could you show some comparisions or where to start? I'm going to write my thesis in the spring and I wouldn't mind being well prepared ahead :-)
- infernal6, on 10/02/2008, -1/+1Symphony is ugly.
- phibit, on 10/02/2008, -2/+1Seriously... GIMP is a bit retarded. Seems like towards the end of the list they started to run out of applications to name... Pidgin? K3B? Snazzy office you got there.
- desertcoffin, on 10/03/2008, -1/+0I don't use Linux... but I love this kind of tech article. So Dugg!
- LastDitchHero, on 10/02/2008, -3/+1GnoTime blows and difficult to setup, get Adobe Air and use Ora Time and Expense. Air for Linux may not have V4L 2 support but that is coming so you can take snap shots of your reciepts. Also for invoicing try NCH's Express Invoice. NCH also has an accounting suite that works fine under Wine. Or you can use Quasar Accounting which is native to Linux.
- jrmints22, on 10/02/2008, -2/+0Word > OpenOffice
No question - djolemcloud, on 10/02/2008, -4/+1i agree,Linux id great but only for iffice work. For home PC is much better...
- HoratioHellpop, on 10/02/2008, -6/+1don't forget KLSKJOfficeBlaick .... or the 12,000 other konsonant-riddled names for worthless applications in Linux. But freedom! Choice! woo!
- wisam, on 10/02/2008, -6/+1johngarcia, we all know that. No need to act smart. I bet most Pidgin users and Linux users.
- DickMasterson2, on 10/02/2008, -9/+4Best Linux office application is... to install Windows!
