- greengreed, on 09/04/2008, -2/+12Another linux-vs-windows article? Let the flamewars begin! If your OS is the best for you, it must be the best out there for everyone, right?
This is also a dupe - http://digg.com/linux_unix/10_Fundamental_Differen ... (made popular 8 days ago) - klitzbtc, on 09/04/2008, -4/+9I think what really kills it for me (with Windows) is number 5.
When it comes down to fixing a damn problem I can't stand grinding through the Windows GUI searching and hoping to find a solution. I'd rather just pop open a command terminal and fix it the simplest way possible, I think that's what really drove a lot of people away from Windows. The inability to administer your entire PC from the command prompt. - clsslc, on 09/05/2008, -0/+3"8. Fanboys vs corporate types
[stuff] ... Windows does not have these same fans. Instead, Windows has a league of paper-certified administrators who believe the hype when they hear the misrepresented market-share numbers reassuring them they will be employable until the end of time."
So true. - RoboDonut, on 09/05/2008, -0/+3Most of them haven't even given it a chance.
- RoboDonut, on 09/05/2008, -2/+4This is a duplicate. The same article was submitted multiple times when it came out days ago.
- belumaves, on 09/04/2008, -3/+4while I doubt you will listen to me, the fact is that many people don't like command lines. yes, really, they don't.
- klitzbtc, on 09/05/2008, -0/+1Well yeah, I know a lot of people refuse to use the command line. But, the fact is that Windows should still retain the feature for people to administer systems, just stripping out the core of that system makes literally no sense to me.
Just let us nerds be nerds, and being without a command line, is like being without mountain dew, i just can't see myself without it. - inactive, on 09/04/2008, -3/+3err sorry but no
i like GUI“s
damn, that came out wrong - belumaves, on 09/05/2008, -2/+2and don't want to. in sales, you give them what they want.
- ChristPissed, on 09/04/2008, -3/+3Portion of a comment worth repeating (cut-n-pasted from the article's comment section) . . .
"Basically this article was a irrelevant waste of space that could have been less painful by dowsing myself with gasoline and lighting myself on fire.
Please do me a favor and write something that applies to today and not the mid nineties. " - JeffBuzz, on 09/04/2008, -8/+7Linux is a REAL operating system. Windows was designed for idiots (by idiots?).
- watcht, on 09/05/2008, -2/+1As a complete linux advocate: I have to agree with estvir, Linux does have it's quirks such as Dual-Monitor support. (Flash issues is beyond our control though, interfaces have changed quite much, Linux has gotten a lot more modern these days .) Windows is a REAL os too, although it isn't open as Linux, it is it's a pretty damn good thing in it's own right, hell i dual boot to get office 2007 which imho is ***** better than our open office suite, or when wine fails some programs for me. You can also tweak windows to be pretty quick on it's feet, get into technical/advance things using it's cmd line, and if you stay away from sources of malware (you know your guilty pleasures and common sense on email attachments) it's pretty damn secure. Don't hate either of them, learn to embrace the two/three (for you apple fans), after all competition breeds innovation, (which is good for us).
- estvir, on 09/05/2008, -3/+2It must be embarrassing to use a 'real' OS that can't get above 1% usage. Also, I imagine have interfaces from the 90s, not being able to use Flash to easily, horrible dual monitor support (It's 2008, right?), etc and a ton of other things are rather embarrassing for your oh-so-smart people.
- benbrooks101, on 09/04/2008, -7/+3Isn't this obvious and well known?
