- arjie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+28My favourite was always the Red Hat 9 GRUB splash. I loved that one, but I've now taken to the Fedora splash and use it on my Ubuntu machine. You can find those two and some more here:
http://schragehome.de/splash/index2.html
and http://schragehome.de/splash/index.html
It's amazing how nice 14 colors be :)
Also, as listed at http://ruslug.rutgers.edu/~mcgrof/grub-images/ , you can make your own splash in one line using:
convert -resize 640x480 -colors 14 image.png image.xpm && gzip image.xpm
Results may not be very good if you had lots of colours though. - antiNeo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+24Umm... why would you need a Windows disk? If you just removed your Linux partition, you obviously need another Linux disk. ;-)
- kryogenix, on 10/12/2007, -3/+20Nifty link, though it was odd seeing the gay/anti-religious propaganda on the side.
- mxgxw, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11@gkskillz: To fix MBR to boot windows again, you don't have to make a clean install. Just boot from your windows XP install CD in recovery mode and type "FIXBOOT C:"
- strabes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7(k)ubuntu users can install the packages grub-splashimages and kubuntu-grub-splashimages to get some more. My favorite is the KUBUNTU_splashscreen_faded_sky.xpm.gz one. 3D letters that say "KUBUNTU"
- clearzen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Thanks for the links. The last one just saved me 30 mins with google.
- Justinpirate, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6You don't have to clean install windows just to fix the mbr. Fixmbr and fixboot, as far as I have experienced, work just fine.
- AshtonKe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Or you could, you know, make a grub floppy using a live disk....
I'm happy with my Gentoo based Grub Splash. Although I might try out something similar.
If you happen to lose your grub.conf file, you're screwed, unless if you happen to know how to use its small CLI. That's handy information, trust me; especially since the first grub.conf file you write, never quite seems to work as well as hoped.... - aristotle0dude, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I think the guy running the site is a closet heterosexual and closet christian. There is just way too much overcompensation going on. :)
He should be honest with himself. - GMorgan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Why would you get rid of Grub. It works perfectly well.
- antiNeo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7http://www.thinkgeek.com/caffeine/drinks/2818/
- TheMattrix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4OMG I made that purple 'space' one!
It's nice someone enjoyed it :-)
http://www.deviantart.com/deviation/35695026/ - GMorgan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4So you don't care for the look and feel of your desktop at all then. Good for you for not surrendering to peer pressure and the modern trend of expect everything to look perfect.

Next time find out if Duggmirror caught it before linking to it. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I would recommend people look at using gfxboot, its in the Ubuntu repos and should probably be the default boot loader.
It allows for some simple animations, and looks much better then the grub splash.
Instructions here, but you don't need to download the .deb file as gfxboot is now in repos:
http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=208855 - clickwir, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4this doesn't have anything to do with removing grub.
- stupidbrowner, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3You can rewrite the the MBR back to the windows default one without using a win-install disk. There are multiple options, just one of them is to run fixmbr. This site has some info http://www.ambience.sk/fdisk-master-boot-record-windows-linux-lilo-fixmbr.php
- Hindu_Wardrobe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Seconded, I've had to do that quite a few times :P
- alikuru, on 03/04/2009, -1/+3Never thought to see Klimt on boot prompt :) Thanks for the links.
- arjie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I loved it! Thank you so much.
- KevinJB, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Will delete once server comes back online / 24 hours. May have to copy and paste for link to work. Enough to give you guys an idea:

Apologies for comment abuse. - nubnub, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5http://thelinux.free.fr/images/GRUB/KUBUNTU_splashscreen_faded_sky.png
- idonthack, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I don't know how the remote works, but if it acts like a USB keyboard, turn on an option like "USB Keyboard Support" or "USB Legacy Support" in your BIOS and it should work in grub. (basically just what you would do to get a regular usb keyboard to work)
- schestowitz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Ah! Time to replace those SuSE lizards.
- Toupee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I always liked GAG, the Graphical Boot Manager.
http://gag.sourceforge.net/ - idonthack, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I don't know what's with duggmirror lately, I haven't seen a working duggmirror link for a week or two now...
- nicoladimaria, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1now my grub menu has a klimt bacgkround...uhm
- Airconditioning, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The site's favicon looks suspiciously like someone peeking through a gloryhole.
Just saying... - flappysocks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1 If only grub would hurry up and officially support Reiser4.
- strabes, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2@nubnub: Yep; that's it. Looks really good as far as 14 color 640x480 images go.
- pmarks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It'd be nice to have some full-resolution screenshots. I'm too lazy to download and un-gzip the files when I just want to see what they look like.
- hiroki40, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1i have just done this. for jack bauer fans. i hope you enjoy it:
http://www.divshare.com/download/327223-7a7
by the way, i did it using the gimp. resized it to 640x480, then indexed it to 14 colors and then i gunziped it. - TrevorBradley, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Gee, that's purdy...
Tell me that Grub can take input from an Microsoft MCE USB remote (at least up, down, and enter) and I'm sold. Presently my HTPC boots with LILO and I have my remote working great, except at boot I need the keyboard to boot to the secondary OS. - masskurec, on 03/03/2009, -0/+0i prefer gag
http://xptweak.net - crossers, on 07/23/2008, -0/+0oh great pictures. I like space.

- Thugacation, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Cool. Too bad I hate rebooting my machine.
- loconet, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2There are a whole bunch of decent ones here as well: http://gnome-look.org/index.php?xsortmode=high&page=0
- mahdaeng, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0pretty distracting propaganda that had nothing to do with linux
buried. - RailOcelot, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0How did "GEM" got on that list? I can find much better image then that.
- StarManta, on 10/12/2007, -8/+2Uh. Why do I care? They're ***** background images.
- DrScott, on 10/12/2007, -18/+9Be aware, and beware: Removing GRUB by removing your Linux partition will require a windows install disc. Yes, I found this out the newbie route. Learn from my mistakes.
- nipuL, on 10/12/2007, -11/+1http://www.duggmirror.com
- BlackAle, on 10/12/2007, -13/+1zzzzzzz
- HCviolence, on 10/12/2007, -13/+1Or you could use a ultimate boot disk to get rid of grub
- gkskillz, on 10/12/2007, -15/+1@antiNeo - Because installing Linux/GRUB rewrites your MBR (master boot record) so with GRUB uninstalled, the computer cannot boot Windows. Since the MBR is not corrupt, it cannot be repaired. The only way to fix this is by a clean install of windows, or by installing Linux/GRUB again.
