- PReitz, on 10/29/2008, -0/+32What an exciting list, I can't wait to use those programs....oh wait, I already am. *rolls eyes*
- chubbstar, on 10/29/2008, -1/+29this is a pretty useless list
- nailer, on 10/29/2008, -4/+30It would be better if he mentioned apps that aren't included as defaults.
- nic777, on 10/29/2008, -2/+27"I usually prefer KDE/Qt applications over the ones built in GTK, and the same applies here. I always used players like Kaffeine or SMPlayer instead of Totem. Totem has support for DVDs, but most of them won't work even with libdvdcss2 installed, even though in other players they work flawless. Seeking is very slow and choppy"
So you like nothing about totem then? Why did you list it? Not a good list - tomarocco, on 10/29/2008, -2/+23The only 'essential' program is the Terminal...
- Zaggynl, on 10/29/2008, -0/+16Rhythmbox 0.11.6
Totem 2.24.2
OpenOffice.org 2.4.1
Firefox 3.0.3
Nautilus 2.24.1
Brasero 0.8.2
GNOME Terminal
Gedit 2.24.0
Pidgin 2.5.2
GIMP 2.6.1
It's missing a (dedicated) IRC client though (I don't like Pidgin for IRC), for when the oh so easy Linux distro ain't working.
You know, with your €100 soundcard (creative x-fi anyone?) or your ATI card.
*shakes fist at Creative and ATI* - PReitz, on 10/29/2008, -0/+10It's the worst game ever.
- mycoplasma, on 10/29/2008, -1/+10Aren't all of these programs already in hardy heron?
Don't get me wrong, I'm looking forward to Intrepid Ibex, but I can't see any real point in making this list, especially considering how many of these programs are part of Gnome, as well as pretty much any distro that uses Gnome by default. - expert01, on 10/29/2008, -0/+9Would you like to know what that "bug" is from?
Following those Firefox tweak guides to the letter. They have you set the right click (and other) menus to come up so fast that when you right click the menu comes up before it registers the mouse button being released, and when the mouse button is released it activates whatever menu option happens to be there.
I have the exact same problem, but I'm too lazy to fix it. - mejason69, on 10/29/2008, -1/+9remind me again....what is the point of that article.....?????????????
- secrity, on 10/29/2008, -0/+5Most, if not all of those are available in the repositories.
- inactive, on 10/29/2008, -2/+7What a ***** ***** list.
- SteveMax, on 10/29/2008, -1/+6Probably, he meant "I hate the damned thing but it's the only way to watch movies in a default Ubuntu install, so I must list it or someone will scream 'OMFG ubuntu sux u cant even watch a movies lololol!!!!1!@1one'"
- mrsteveman1, on 10/29/2008, -0/+5I've seen that even on OSX
- zombiepig, on 10/29/2008, -3/+7"An extremely annoying bug I could catch was that sometimes right-clicking an image (for example in the form used to write this post) will do anything but open the right-click context menu: it will either try to bookmark it, open it in a new tab or new window and so on. I think this should be fixed. In fact, Firefox behaves in a same manner on Debian too (and probably it's not distro-specific), it won't open the context menu when right-clicking if you just opened a few more images in separate tabs."
I get this bug too, and it's seriously annoying. - inactive, on 10/29/2008, -2/+6None of those are essential.
- ElectricKetchup, on 10/29/2008, -0/+3Brasero is in the list.
- snurfle, on 10/29/2008, -1/+4Buried simply because of the use of "bleeding edge".
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bleeding_edge - ssmithy, on 10/29/2008, -0/+3I can't stand most of the apps on this list, especially Totem and Rhythmbox. There are way better alternatives if you take the time to look around.
- benoitcsirois, on 10/29/2008, -0/+3I don't see the point of this article...
Cool programs and all but it's nothing especially new. It even comes with an old version of OO... What hapenned to OO3? - ssmithy, on 10/29/2008, -0/+3+1 = 2
- tk0680, on 10/29/2008, -0/+3Poor as something very goddamn poor. Who the hell is digging this?
- diggerpleez, on 10/29/2008, -0/+3Well golly... I will have to try out this Nautilus thing!
- ch40sBr1ng3r, on 10/29/2008, -0/+3Dugg for Firefox and openoffice.....even tho these are pretty much standard in all linux distros. Im not a big fan of Gnome myself ( KDE is more lively ) as i find it too boring, but hey, thats the beauty of linux right? get to choose anything you want.
- SteveMax, on 10/29/2008, -0/+3What's this "Ubuntu"? I don't follow Pokemon.
- PReitz, on 10/29/2008, -0/+2@Meep3D I disagree with some of what you said, but I do agree that the fanboys (myself included) are often more of a hindrance to getting people to switch than anything. The average user doesn't care about a detailed comparison of how Linux and Windows handle virtual memory
I try to break it down to a few points: You can do all the same stuff, you get a pretty desktop, You're computer isn't crunching away on stuff when you're not touching it, and you get three times as many games as part of the install. (Seriously, comparing the "Games" menus in Windows and Linux has been a huge selling point to average users that I've talked to). - andsalvatierra, on 10/30/2008, -0/+2Wow, a list with default applications enumerated. Way to digg this into the front page, diggers. Buried as lame. (Meh).
- Raz0rEdge, on 10/29/2008, -0/+2+1
- gerryk, on 10/29/2008, -0/+2Hang on... pretty much every post is saying how ***** this list is (and it is!) and yet it's front page with 304 diggs...
- santasing, on 10/29/2008, -1/+3I also use VirtualBox to be able to run windows for iTunes and NetFlix
Yakuake - Meep3D, on 10/29/2008, -2/+4Sucks is largely a factor of how easily and efficiently you can use the software to achieve your goals. Depending on the user this order changes dramatically.
For me, personally, it is Windows, OSX then Linux in order of productivity.
Linux' main problem at the moment is the fanboys who like to 'debunk' honest criticism and the labelling of people with opinions that, while true, are not always positive as trolls.
Effort should be made to identify the people who do not use Linux and, if valid, address these reasons. Linux seems to be stuck in a rut whereby the needs of the fans are addressed while the non users are pretty much ignored. - jamesmcm, on 10/29/2008, -0/+2First apps to apt-get:
VLC
XChat (or irssi if you hate graphics)
Amarok (I even use it on GNOME)
WINE (or compile winehacks from source)
rtorrent
Any others?
Edit: man this jumping comment box is annoying (had to aim to hit submit) - mohtasham, on 10/29/2008, -0/+2Instead of posting such a stupid article, please make some post about how to upgrade Ubuntu real quick the day after it's released. Last time I tried to upgrade to Hardy, the day it was released, but the speed was horrible. Any idea how to use p2p technology for upgrading the current system without reinstalling it?
- SteveMax, on 10/29/2008, -0/+2mplayer is a CLI application. It comes with a "GUI" (which should be dropped actually), but its main (and some would say "only" at the moment) is to play the videos well. It can be used by many GUI applications, such as kmplayer, smplayer and kaffeine. If you want a polished GUI you should look at those mplayer frontends, not the one that comes with the main tree.
- richlw, on 10/29/2008, -0/+2Brasero was mentioned in the article
- DickBreath, on 10/29/2008, -0/+2To get page hits.
- inactive, on 10/30/2008, -0/+1If ubuntu was more like debian I'd try it.
- tj111, on 10/30/2008, -0/+1This list is as informative as John Madden announcing football games. "What they're gonna try to do here Bill is get the ball around the defense into the endzone for a touchdown. Thats how you win football games."
- sodade, on 10/29/2008, -0/+1Brasero can't burn a CD if the files come from an NTFS partition.
- wildest, on 10/29/2008, -1/+2*Is bored and surrounded by oranges*
- charbo187, on 11/02/2008, -0/+1really?
- ethana2, on 10/29/2008, -2/+3I reported that bug, it has like 20,000 duplicates.
Launchpad recently added a 'me too' feature for bug reports that should help us demonstrate just how widespread various bugs are and prioritize them accordingly. - inactive, on 10/29/2008, -0/+1Totem has improved a lot lately, the codec search feature is a killer. The codecs work for every multimedia application but they're more integrated with Totem now than ever before, you no longer need totem-xine and ***** for it to work properly. I'm using totem and the only con I have is the GUI which is kind of "boring".
I used mplayer before but the software looks even more old than totem, the cool thing are the skins, there are A LOT of great skins available but as soon as you open the 'preference' window you see that the gui looks old, I don't know why is that. I have mplayer as a high-ranked project that could be upgraded a lot. - Naidel, on 10/29/2008, -0/+1I have an Asus HD4850 card (ATI), and Ubuntu detected it and installed the proprietary driver, without any hassle for me.
- ElectricKetchup, on 10/29/2008, -0/+1no, you could use xterm.
- DJMattB241, on 10/29/2008, -0/+1As a gamer, I can't use Linux, at least not on my gaming machine, and at least not without dual booting.
There's no reason for me to dual boot to Linux. I can think of nothing worse than browsing around the internet, IMing people, whatever, and then deciding I want to play a game and telling people "brb gotta reboot"
Especially since all that stuff I was doing on Linux work GREAT on Vista.
I have Linux on my TV PC, mainly because it's fun to mess around with, and I only use it for web browsing and torrented tv show watching. There's no way I could justify using Linux (any distro) in its current state for my main PC though. - CalcProgrammer1, on 10/29/2008, -0/+1My preferred list:
VLC: I hate Rhythmbox and Totem, poor interface, poor EQ, gstreamer-based (not bad, but you have to d/l the codecs, annoying). VLC plays everything, doesn't require GStreamer, has nicer EQ, is lightweight and small, streams stuff, and does tons of other stuff. I'd like a nice library for it, but other than that it's perfect.
Songbird: It doesn't have an equalizer yet, but when it does, it might be better than VLC. It has a nice interface, a good library set, and integrated Web capability.
Other than that, Ubuntu's default apps are great. I prefer Deluge for torrents also, though a Linux uTorrent would be best. - genuchelu, on 10/29/2008, -0/+1What a lame article....the title makes it seem like those weren't included in the previous versions
- Knet88, on 10/29/2008, -0/+1If the guy prefers KDE, why didn't he review Kubuntu?
Granted the way that Kubuntu is set up, I really don't want to use it either, at least plain Ubuntu comes with Firefox, pidgen , (t-bird?) and apps that people moving from windows might recognize, whereas last I checked Kubuntu was still *only* offering KDE software - inactive, on 10/29/2008, -0/+1WTF No Open Office 3? That's *****.
