- ozid, on 11/06/2007, -28/+182If switching to Ubuntu was the best decision of your life, you must not go out very much.
- jeremymccurdy, on 11/06/2007, -21/+101I'll switch the day that it's as widely supported by software and game developers as Windows.
- peacebyanymeans, on 10/11/2007, -64/+13710 Reasons why I don't particularly care...
10. I'm perfectly fine with Vista.
9. I prefer Windows over Linux.
8. I like playing games.
7. Linux, as a whole, isn't widely supported by the mainstream.
6. I'd rather use a Mac than Ubuntu, and I'm not too fond of OS X.
5. I know Windows inside and out pretty throughly by now.
4. I'm not too worried about my computer's security, because I'm not a complete retard when it comes to browsing online.
3. I don't like people preaching to me.
2. You seem way too excited about an OS.
1. There is no 1... I just realized that I lied and do care to some extent since I wasted my time typing this out. - elvenseven, on 10/11/2007, -63/+127I can give you 100 advantages of Vista over Ubuntu
- psylence, on 10/11/2007, -11/+67It's your fault a program can't stay stable across heavy usage? Damn, where do I find customers like you?!
- OJXs, on 10/11/2007, -20/+69If this was the best decision of your life, consider getting one...
- bovox, on 11/06/2007, -23/+71I'll give a few:
1. The entire Adobe Creative Suite CS3 (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, etc.)
2. Professional-level type rendering works in Vista (kerning, leading, etc.)
3. DirectX (pretty much every single game worth playing runs on Vista)
4. Quicken (personal finance software on Linux is laughable)
5. Microsoft Office (Open Office doesn't render typefaces properly. Whenever I print a document the kerning and leading is ugly--sometimes letters even overlap)
6. Vista has broader hardware support. Any new piece of PC hardware that you can buy runs on Vista. You cannot say the same with Ubuntu.
7. Fujitusu S500 document scanner works on Vista. Does not work on Ubuntu.
8. On-demand pay-per-view web content works on Vista. Does not work on Ubuntu.
9. Party Poker works on Vista. Does not work on Ubuntu.
10. iTunes works on Vista. (UI on Amarok is horrendous. Amarok also cannot easily, nor intuitively, sync with an iPod)
That's just 10 reasons why Vista is superior to Ubuntu. I'm not bashing Ubuntu. As a matter of fact, I think Ubuntu does some things great, like network applications, but let's be honest here. Vista is superior to Ubuntu in substantially more ways than Ubuntu is superior to Vista. - hbweb500, on 10/11/2007, -16/+60I ran solely Ubuntu for a year, and it is still installed on my laptop. That said, I have tried many flavors of Linux on three of my computers and in every case the video settings had to be tweaked, the wireless networking needed to be set up, and, on one, I had no sound. Fixing all of this was trivial once I knew where to find support, but I shouldntve needed to go to a forum to get my video working. THAT is why Ubuntu is not better than Vista for most users.
- OswaldKenobi, on 10/11/2007, -13/+54What are the disadvantages of using Ubuntu instead of Windows Vista?
- simnor, on 10/11/2007, -18/+57I forgot that advantage, no crashes, although I have had Firefox crash once or twice but i did have like 50 sites open so it is really my own fault
- brnagi, on 10/11/2007, -30/+68I recomment alot of my friends to give Ubuntu a try, its been a stress free OS with no crashes to date.
- skyshock1, on 10/11/2007, -8/+44I love Linux and all? But I have a hard time recommending it to most of my non-techy friends.
Telling a person to use Linux is like telling them they should ditch their family sedan and pick up a NASCAR. Most gear-heads will positively flip out at how fast it goes, but your everyday driver is just going to use it and say "WTF happened to my air-conditioning?" - mntbikeracer1, on 10/11/2007, -20/+53Best decision of your life? Really? You must have one lame life if your OS is your number one decision.
- jexdawg, on 10/11/2007, -7/+34When the first listed advantage is Eye Candy, you know the articles going to be just brilliant. =/
- deadlikeoscar, on 10/11/2007, -13/+38I'm waiting...
- darwin81, on 10/11/2007, -1/+25Actually, Firefox crashes a lot in Ubuntu because of a bug in Flash. Hopefully Gnash will be stable sometime soon.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -9/+32It will be harder to find drivers for new products, you won't be able to play all of your windoze games.
- omjeremy, on 10/11/2007, -24/+47Disadvantages of using Ubuntu:
1) Can't handle being Dugg more than 36 times. - slimbilly, on 10/11/2007, -16/+38i really hope that choosing an operating system is not the best decision of your life.
- juniorlikespie, on 10/11/2007, -6/+24i love ubuntu. i hate windows. but this article was in no way well written. sounds like a fanboy argument like my 360 is better than the wii cause wii is suxorz and has no onlinez multiplayer.
- chugger1992, on 10/11/2007, -28/+452) Easy to Install Applications
Really? All I need to do is accept the License Agreement, choose an install path, and hit "OK" .
3) Secure
A dialog box only appears when making system changes in Ubuntu? Really? And Windows constantly bombards you with these boxes for no apparent reason? I don't think the people at Microsoft are _that_ stupid! UAC only pops up when administrative privileges are needed. Heck, you can easily disable it!
4) Easy to change options
This comes at a price, namely needing a more difficult path to tweak some "deeper" options.
5) Community
ex-Windows or anti-Windows? There are plenty of places to get help with Windows (wait, you needed help with the painfully easy Ubuntu!?), but there are so many dang fanboys that you can't tell who's serious. Getting help with Windows can be more difficult, because there isn't really one place where they like to hang out. You could try several different places, and there would be no one at the door. They aren't getting enough people to serve! True, this isn't really a con-Ubuntu pro-Windows point, I'm tired of hearing the same misinformed arguments
6) Free
OK, everyone likes free, so I agree (rhyme :)
7) Simple Networking
Your Ubuntu PC connected with your XP PC as did your XP PC with your Ubuntu PC.
9) Fast
Vista is actually pretty efficient, it's just bloated with too much for a lower-end system. I guess Ubuntu doesn't really need all these services, so there's a plus for Ubuntu. I bet that if Vista was lowered to all the features of XP and nothing more, it would rival that of Ubuntu.
10) Updates
Windows gets constant updates as well as service packs. Windows 2000 (remember that?) has had 4 for a while now. Windows XP has 2, with a 3rd on the way, so although the big updates (comparative to the next "new" OS X) are few and far between, there are still several small updates nearly weekly.

Now, I wasn't trying to be too blatantly fanboy with that... - Hortnon, on 10/11/2007, -12/+30I've had Vista running for 6 weeks on this desktop, with no crashes.
*edit, with no restarts - bIuebonics, on 10/11/2007, -3/+19OMFG... SOMEONE MADE A TYPO. in all my years of using the internet, i've never seen someone make a spelling mistake. it's unheard of. thankfully you came to the rescue stmiller, without you and your ***** tendency to correct someone on teh intarwebs we'd be lost.
- adolfojp, on 10/11/2007, -7/+22Ditto. An OS is only as useful as the software it runs. Linux IS a great OS. Nobody is doubting that fact. However, the limited software and hardware available makes it not very useful for a lot of people.
- xnviews, on 10/11/2007, -17/+32I'm an OSS supporter but I just have to say that Ubuntu while making strides is far away from being usable on a daily basis by even someone as tech savvy as myself. Doing anything that is not mainstream is a headache. Try getting your RICOH media card reader to work or how about your Dell Jukebox player. When I was younger I could spend days on and off searching forums to fix my problems. Searching keywords scouring posts at the hint that someone might know how to fix the problem I was having. Oh you want your media keys to work on your ASUS laptop? Well first you're gong to need the ASUS ACPI driver. But oh that's only after you recompile your kernel for that support. Oh and then once you set it up you need to write all of this obscure configuration code which you could have never come up with on your own. Besides all of that, spending days looking for fixes doesn't appeal to me anymore. Sorry, while Ubuntu and desktop linux are making strides they are far away in terms of ease of use.
- linuxwarz, on 10/11/2007, -7/+22Folks, to the left of the vehicle, we have your typical ignorant mac user. These users are known to have 0 security knowledge and 0 DIY knowledge. Nothing to see here, move along.
But seriously, ubuntu is easier to install than XP. - Disease, on 10/11/2007, -8/+21Except when you're running ATI and X decides to crash when playing Frets on Fire.
- ojk007, on 10/11/2007, -12/+25did you get the ubuntu cd?
ask for help? the community is massive..
use a live cd?
its really as easy as booting into the live cd and double clicking install.. - Hortnon, on 10/11/2007, -11/+23Unless the drivers don't work right, which is completely plausible on a laptop.
Anyway, if Linux wants to overtake Windows, one of their major hurdles is the ability to install without the need for the community. - graycat, on 10/11/2007, -3/+15roflmao...
I mean I was trying to install Real Player on ubuntu and somehow my entire system got messed up, I had to re-install.
It does that on Windows too, dude. The suckiness of Real stretches across operating systems. - MWeather, on 10/11/2007, -10/+22Ask Microsoft.
- lastdeadmouse, on 10/11/2007, -2/+13So do Ubuntu's. If you want the proprietary drivers, then the hard part... check the box.
- Hortnon, on 10/11/2007, -10/+21They have everything to do with Vista, and can really be summed up in a single point:
-3rd party support. Vista has it. Linux does not. - OneAndOnlySnob, on 10/11/2007, -0/+11I'm a computer scientist and you have no idea what you're talking about. If Linux had so few features, Linux wouldn't be smashing Windows on the server. We've had an O(1) scheduler for many years. And Linux has tons of features that Windows hasn't even considered. Our features tend to be more along the line of completely network transparent window server, support for tons of different fast file systems that don't require defragmentation, and the ability to update programs while they are in use (important for uptime).
Take a look at Compiz Fusion and then tell me Windows can even come close to that level of eye candy. It runs on very modest hardware, so Linux wins on efficiency here.
Take the time to learn about apt and synaptic, and tell me that Windows Update can even compare.
Take a look at FUSE and tell me Windows has anything similar. I can view Wikipedia as a directory on my file system!
Take a look at SELinux and AppArmor and tell me Windows security isn't a complete joke. - fleshberkowski, on 10/11/2007, -5/+16i'm sorry, i like hearing nice stories about linux (it's what got me to try it out) and i'm glad you're enthused, but this post offers nothing new.
- Hortnon, on 10/11/2007, -13/+24Not having to emulate DirectX to play games
Never having to use the command line to configure anything
Drivers that work
Virtual guarantee that any program I want has a Windows version - Hunting for versions of software for specific distros is annoying
Familiarity - I know where to find things in Windows. Linux (and much moreso Macintosh) tries to be different.
That's just off the top of my head. I installed Ubuntu about 2 months ago on an extra computer I had. It went ok - until I tried to update the ATI drivers. Then I lost both Gnome and KDE interfaces (wouldn't display properly). Not only that, but once I had it installed, I couldn't figure out a productive use for it, I always ended up back on my PC. - alexdemers, on 10/11/2007, -3/+14Why would you want to install Real Player in the first place?
- Narshe, on 10/11/2007, -1/+11Don't forget to mention the iPhone.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -6/+16Was this written by a twelve year old? Just curious...
- Hortnon, on 10/11/2007, -8/+18I'm an informed user, and I still prefer Windows for home use
(Use Solaris and AIX at work) - jorgepblank, on 10/11/2007, -1/+11Can't wait till Gutsy.
- stmiller, on 10/11/2007, -1/+11"I'll switch the day that it's as widely supported by software and game developers as Windows."
It's a chicken and egg thing. They aren't going to 'widely support' Linux unless there are users. Users = profit for them. So at least dual boot, and ask your software devs for a Linux version of what apps you need. - lastdeadmouse, on 10/11/2007, -1/+10Have you ever clean installed windows? On this dual boot laptop, with XP, I had to d/l and install wireless, video, sound, and chipset drivers. With 7.04, just install bcm43xx-fwcutter with synaptic. Better yet, have you ever tried installing OS X on anything but apple's hardware?
- specialK16, on 10/11/2007, -1/+10I found so funny that Ubuntu immediately recognized my Sony CLIE as a USB storage device, while Vista took around 5 minutes just searching for the driver.
- Snarfy, on 10/11/2007, -2/+11I felt the same way. I was dual booting for a while, but now I use linux 100% full time. I'm a gamer so it hurts, but my favorite game by far is UT2004, followed up by quake 4, both of which run on linux. Also there are things like mame which let you get some game action in. It's not the same as being able to go down to the local store and pick up command & conquer for windows, but there are solutions to that.
VMware gsx server is a free download. Newer versions are starting to show GPU acceleration, meaning your games will work in VMware soon enough. Any real linux user is gonna have VMware, wine, or something to fix that issue.
Windows compatibility shouldn't be something to fear as the solutions are really good these days. - TheMongo, on 10/11/2007, -2/+11Seriously, how is this NOT blog spam? A terribly written article that offers no valuable information, submitted by the author complete with his comments?
- andburn1, on 10/11/2007, -9/+18I haven't had XP crash in the past year - that I can remember - I usually keep my computer running for a week or more with standbys in between usage.
- srg13, on 10/11/2007, -2/+11You can install it 90% of the time without the help of the community. All my computers worked fine - everything except a non-plug and pay soundcard (which was pretty easy anyway)
- lastdeadmouse, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8works here too... sudo apt-get install bcm43xx-fwcutter
- specialK16, on 10/11/2007, -4/+12Ha, you list iTunes a good thing...
Jeez.... -
