- laelfrog, on 07/20/2008, -0/+11How about in October '08 .... 8.10
- naszaklasa, on 07/20/2008, -1/+902. better Flash experience
digg for that- balliano, on 07/20/2008, -1/+12i agree, firefox is the software i use the most and most of the websites out there have flash contents so we really need a better flash experience!
- Boktai1000, on 07/20/2008, -0/+10You can already download a flash 10 plug-in for linux, although it is beta but id say the pros outweigh the cons compared to flash 9.
- Dohko_Xar, on 07/20/2008, -1/+71 of 2 times I enter Youtube or a site with flash, Firefox crashes... what's up with that?
- 30Seconds, on 07/20/2008, -2/+2I have the same problem with airline food.
- drato, on 07/20/2008, -0/+1It's that the version of flash currently shipped with Ubuntu doesn't play nicely with pulseaudio. You can circumvent the problem by following this guide:
http://www.ubuntugeek.com/fix-for-firefox-crashes- ... - trogdoor, on 07/20/2008, -0/+1drato:
You will only experience those problems if you upgraded from one of the Hardy Alphas or installed libflashsupport yourself - 1timeuser, on 07/20/2008, -0/+1So far I haven't had that problem with the Flash 10 beta.
http://labs.adobe.com/technologies/flashplayer10/ - nmnnotmyname, on 07/20/2008, -0/+1I haven't had this issue with the Flash 10 beta 2 in NsPluginWrapper after some system updates and clearing my old plugins.
And then it worked better than Opera... which is why i'm back on Firefox right now...
- draegloth, on 07/20/2008, -0/+2Positive flash experiences are important. I had a horribly negative flash experience on the NYC subway one night.
I still can't eat sausage.
Or eggs.
- santixar, on 07/20/2008, -0/+70I look forward for the day Flash in Linux is not an issue anymore.
- mrsteveman1, on 07/20/2008, -2/+25Hopefully that day will be when web developers find something better to use and tell Adobe to ***** a duck.
On the other hand, until that happens, Ubuntu and all the others should be removing any possible problems for users to get up and running, even with proprietary plug-ins like flash, because most users don't care about the freedom issues at hand, they just want it to work, and they will install it anyway, so might as well make it easy. Doesn't mean it has to come on the disk or be enabled by default, but it shouldn't be hard either, that just annoys people and gives Linux a bad name. - thethirdmoose, on 07/20/2008, -3/+5I look forward for the day in Linux is not an issue anymore. Ubuntu is awesome. BUT AUDIO IS BROKEN!!! Fix it please!
- skyh, on 07/20/2008, -3/+1I look forward to the day when Ubuntu will detect the resolution on my flat panel monitor correctly..
I wonder if you'll EVER be able to just plug in a monitor in Ubuntu and have it work.. - Jeremyz0r, on 07/20/2008, -5/+1I look forward to the day that I stop using PC... nah.
Mac: Extremely over priced OUTDATED hardware.
Linux: Massive compatibility problems! (If it is working now, it wont be in the next release. MWAHHAHAHA!!) - leejarratt, on 07/20/2008, -1/+2You can fix it easily by going to Synaptic Package Manager and searching for "libflashsupport", install that, restart Firefox and it should be fine :)
- skyh, on 07/20/2008, -3/+1I look forward to the day when Ubuntu will detect the resolution on my flat panel monitor correctly..
- 1timeuser, on 07/20/2008, -0/+4It's improved ALOT over the past few years. So far the Flash 10 beta (http://labs.adobe.com/technologies/flashplayer10/ ) seems to have some improvements over the last one.
- korvins, on 07/21/2008, -0/+1I don't have issues with Flash on Linux...

- thecheatah, on 07/20/2008, -3/+14One thing that pisses me off with linux is that you cant draw html things on top of flash :-. the new flash 10 is suppose to allow you to do that, but the beta still doesnt :-. I dont think there ever going to, I dont know why.
- balliano, on 07/20/2008, -0/+7i saw it working with flash 10 beta2 just a few days ago but i went back to flash 9 because of the crashes...
- sumguy231, on 07/20/2008, -0/+12The latest Flash 10 beta indeed fixes this problem, though apparently only if you have Firefox 3. According to the Adobe Flash for Linux blog, some excess crashing is due to Firefox bugs that are also being worked on.
- macaholic, on 07/20/2008, -0/+1Hah, still does it for me, but I know why, because I'm on 64-bit. I, as well as many others, will dance in the streets the day Adobe officially supports 64-bit flash.
- dbr_onix, on 07/20/2008, -0/+2The no-HTML-over-Flash error happens in Firefox and Camino on OS X, and IE/Fx on WinXP too.. If you float a div over a flash element, and the flash element is playing, it displays in front of the div..

- balliano, on 07/20/2008, -0/+12AFAIR in the full spec there are all the reasons why a passwordless account is unsafe while this new guest approach will be better (just one, the guest account will be locked-down for disk access)
- theaceoffire, on 07/20/2008, -1/+14Set up a normal account, go to system, admin, login window,
Click security, and put in your info to have it auto-login.
Its not the same, but it is useful. - dimension128, on 07/21/2008, -0/+1I did this before. I think it was when I used Ubuntu 5.04. I just searched the forums and found step by step instructions. It involved modifying some text files (of course), and restarting gdm. But I used to have an account for each of my kids, and they could just click their picture to log in.
- aserer511, on 07/20/2008, -6/+4not to be too much of a downer, but there're no *OMG WOW* features. I don't care; I really, really wanna put Kubuntu on my next box

- angryfirelord, on 07/20/2008, -4/+7Here's one for Ubuntu, how about quality assurance? I always see posts on the ubuntuforums about how this kernel update breaks this driver, this package doesn't work right (like sdl & pingus), and so on. Let's not forget they already shipped two broken xorg updates in a year, which is highly unacceptable for someone who wants to replace Windows, especially at a company.
I don't mean to say Ubuntu sucks, but a lot of non-security bugs tend to get marked as low priority. Let's get a better QA team before we start throwing in new features.- peestandingup, on 07/20/2008, -1/+6No one is responsible for it in the end. Thats a major problem with most people right there.
- zwaldowski, on 07/20/2008, -1/+3You're totally right, but system updates like kernels and bugfixes aren't quality assurance issues. That's like whining because Windows Updates breaks Vista Transformation Pack...
- Tenoq, on 07/20/2008, -2/+6I lol'ed hard. You mean like spending 5 years polishing an OS release that still broke HUNDREDS of drivers? :p
- andrewtheart, on 07/20/2008, -0/+1https://wiki.ubuntu.com/QATeam
- bigteebo, on 07/20/2008, -10/+17I just spent over an hour getting the resolution BACK to 1024x768 though xorg.conf & trial & error. It should NEVER take this long. It should NEVER be this much of a hassle. The "Screen resolution" under System >> preferences is 100% useless. It's like an option list of resolutions you DON'T want. this is an old Micron monitor, naturally not listed in the monitor database.
And don't get me started with trying to get things to authenticate in Samba.- Sairgem, on 07/20/2008, -10/+3Get hardware that's compatible with Linux or go back to Windows.
- energyblue, on 07/20/2008, -0/+2I think in the overall scheme of things, what he/she is saying is that more hardware support is necessary if Ubuntu wants to become a major player.
- sarixe, on 07/20/2008, -1/+1well ... what ABOUT samba?
- r4ge, on 07/20/2008, -0/+4sudo mkdir /mnt/smbshare ; sudo mount -t [smbfs/cifs] -o username=guest password=guest //192.168.1.2/sharename /mnt/smbshare
Dont forget to escape spaces in your share names
alternately

You gotta remember linux is still more of a server operating system than anything :) - andrewtheart, on 07/20/2008, -1/+4You're right, this is an outrage! It is against some universal principle that the developers of xorg didn't account for one of the thousands upon thousands of monitor/graphics card configurations, especially monitors from the stone age!!!
- sk11, on 07/20/2008, -2/+2Just search google.com/linux for the answers. Took me 2 minutes to find out how to change the screen resolution.

- Retrospekt, on 07/20/2008, -4/+8Ever heard of WINE? Plays most everything fine.
- Awspire, on 07/20/2008, -9/+3If your serious about your comment, then you've never used Wine at all. I have, and its like trying to run a Windows app on a ten year old PC, that has a crippled hard drive, faulty power supply, and broken monitor. Other words, Wine does not work, at all. So please, Linux zealots, stop claiming Linux can run all Windows apps with the use of Wine, cause you all look like fools desperately trying to get someone to play with your crappy toys.
- drato, on 07/20/2008, -0/+7@Awspire
I don't fully agree wtih Retro either, but you sound like even more of an idiot when you spew off ***** about how bad WINE is. I'm not saying WINE is by any means perfect, or can be considered a drop-in replacement for windows, but the stuff the project has accomplished is pretty impressive, and while it may not run every Windows application flawlessly, it does do pretty well with many different applications. - Retrospekt, on 07/20/2008, -1/+5I've used WINE hundreds of times, thank you. It works great.
- talonh, on 07/20/2008, -1/+7#11 the ability to play like no new windows viruses. There fixed it for you, because one cliched and overused comment deserves another.
- sk11, on 07/20/2008, -0/+2Wine lets you run many windows applications, including new games, on Linux. But tell me how do I get Linux apps to run on windows?
- zwaldowski, on 07/20/2008, -1/+8#13: Save $300 on Vista Ultimate and buy a ***** Xbox.
- Retrospekt, on 07/20/2008, -0/+5Nothing very special. Ubuntu always worked fine for me and this list of 10 doesn't affect me much.
The best one would probably be Printer drivers. Maybe I can get my network printer working... - ronaldmonster, on 07/20/2008, -1/+1Thanks a bunch :)
- Langford, on 07/20/2008, -0/+1Some of those were some very nice features, especially the printer drivers. At the moment however, I wonder how well it will see my tablet-screen.
- keyo, on 07/20/2008, -5/+19I think this guy has figured out digg's algorithm...

}
hence simply putting 12 would obviously not work.

- balliano, on 07/20/2008, -0/+4hahaha, you're not completely right, i wrote 10 + 2 cause 2 blueprints are in a "low priority" thus are in a "maybe state" :-) anyway the "10 things" in the post title was too attractive for me :-))

that will come in handy when family comes over - vwgtiturbo, on 07/20/2008, -14/+6Look people... Ubuntu is nothing special. I can't figure out why it gets so much press. Is there one single point that makes it better than any other distro? I can think of a few ways that openSuse is better, but do you see me posting 50 stories a day to Digg on the virtues of openSuse? Give me a break... printer drivers are considered a big deal? A guest log in (wow, nice originality there), Flash (GO LINUX!!). These are just a few of the reasons that Linux will NEVER take over the world (although I seem to read every year that THIS IS THE YEAR FOR LINUX ON THE DESKTOP). These things shouldn't be an issue. These things should just work on a computer. I shouldn't have to spend 4 hours getting a botched xorg update to work. Really, it should be as simple as selected what damn resolution I want, then BAM! It happens. You people are so brainwashed, just for the sake of being against the commercial OSs, and because you want free *****. Sorry folks. The old adage of 'you get what you pay for' is true. If you think otherwise, you are disillusioned. I would rather pay for something that works 85-90% of the time, then get something for free that I have to mess with infinitely just to get basic functions to work. I suppose if you are too cheap, or have too much time on your hands, more power to you. I guess I just have better things to do than sit in front of a computer.
- Walkboss, on 07/20/2008, -0/+4I didn't know being a badass was so time consuming.

- Natilator3, on 07/20/2008, -0/+0I like that it takes more work because I enjoy the sense of accomplishment when I get something really hard done. It might just be the programmer in me but that's the way I feel.
- phoenixp3k, on 07/20/2008, -1/+9Dugg for Guest account support + all the rest are pretty good improvements too.
- neko, on 07/20/2008, -0/+1The guest account thing does sound promising - when family comes over I usually just open up epiphany for them rather than log out, but I'd like to see how heavily they can lock down these guest accounts. Downloading software through apt and synaptic has spoiled me, and now I don't trust anything I get from the interwebs at all. It's be nice to be able to try out an app in a heavily locked down sandbox.*
* - Well, I'm sure given time I could set up a chroot, and look into that whole SELinux thing and so on, but it'd be nice for one to be properly set up without devoting a weekend to it. - tama00, on 07/20/2008, -7/+3Why does everyone on digg love top 10 lists?
further more, why does everyone on digg love reading about ubuntu all day long?- 1timeuser, on 07/20/2008, -0/+7Because we are all "Wanking Walruses". That's why.
- dmgordon, on 07/20/2008, -1/+2Apparently, they're really into Pokemon. ;-)
- jonrobenator, on 07/20/2008, -0/+4While I know taking and sharing is how open source works, I think it's important to give people due credit for the work they do. With that in mind, from this list the following features have been present in the last few Fedora releases, as well as developed by Fedora:
* 3G networking
* Automatic download of printer drivers
* Font selector (don't know if this will be the same tool, but it definitely exists in Fedora and thus upstream Gnome)
* Installation from a USB stick (since Fedora 7 - and Fedora will create a live USB stick with persistence!)
* Identity management and network authentication - did anyone here see FreeIPA? Why, once again, is Ubuntu re-inventing the wheel instead of working with the rest of the free software community?
* PackageKit - default in Fedora 9 and developed by a Fedora community member
* New installer artwork - every release for Fedora
I'm not complaining, but the last round of releases saw a less stable Ubuntu and a more stable Fedora for many people, despite the more bleeding edge nature of Fedora. Just trying to provide some balance!- andrewtheart, on 07/20/2008, -1/+1Fedora is cutting edge, we know.
- arcticblue, on 07/20/2008, -0/+2If I still can't create a VPN connection while on a static IP address ("Roaming mode", whatever the hell that's supposed to mean, is turned off), I'm going to be extremely disappointed.
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/network- ... - baconz, on 07/20/2008, -3/+212 things!!?? I'm gonna download that crap right away. I'll get dozens of things done. OK, only one dozen. But still...
- Doji, on 07/20/2008, -0/+1It's still in early alpha and that's not nearly the full list so stfu.
- giruzz, on 07/20/2008, -0/+6Automatic download of printer drivers
digg for that.
It takes 1hrs to make a printer (Canon) working on Ubuntu 8.04.
Canon, listen to me, could you please make a decent driver for Ubuntu?- pHr34kY, on 07/21/2008, -0/+1That's been the deciding factor for by printer purchases for the last 5 years. I simply don't buy Canons anymore.
- yarinh1, on 07/20/2008, -2/+1Hopefully it's gonna be better then Hardy Heron, which is an awful release, drives me nuts, Pulse audio is crap. full of annoying issues.
- blueplanet, on 07/20/2008, -0/+6That sounds pretty good, maybe I'll finally buy Ubuntu on BestBuy.com for the low low price of $20
- Natilator3, on 07/20/2008, -0/+0you don't need to pay for it...
- leejarratt, on 07/20/2008, -0/+8Ubuntu for life, I cringe when I use a Windows based computer now lol.
- Natilator3, on 07/20/2008, -0/+2Me too. Whenever I have to switch back to the windows partition I absolutely HATE it!
- MosaicM, on 07/20/2008, -5/+2Unless I get the ability to play TF2, Mass Effect, Civ 4 and Spore as well as Windows XP you'll never convert me. Sorry Ubuntu.
- Vadi0, on 07/20/2008, -0/+5I actually play Civ 4 fine in Ubuntu. Can't speak about the rest of the games though, didn't even bother trying them (no linux version of the game, and I'm not that interested bother).
As for Ubuntu QA, a new team was formed just for this, http://qa.ubuntu.com/ help out if you feel like it. - sethorama99, on 07/20/2008, -1/+4How about making my wifi card work finally?
- UntoDarkness, on 07/20/2008, -0/+5Flash working perfectly on Ubuntu would be great! They could also improve on their Boot time... It is painfully slow compared to my Windows XP installation.
Good to see that it is also getting a new graphic installer! Let's see how it compares to the one on openSUSE 11. - W1LS0N, on 07/20/2008, -7/+2linux - the operating system for the third world.
- jerbaker, on 07/20/2008, -3/+1Considering that most people trying out a boot CD will be on Windows, how about making Ubuntu mount NTFS partitions automatically, or at least able to mount NTFS without having to find drivers, etc.? Until I can access my Windows partitions, Ubuntu is useless. We've been waiting a couple of years for this. Maybe Flash is more important than file access. What do I know?
- Peterix, on 07/20/2008, -1/+3It does mount ntfs automatically. And that makes me RAGE every time it puts the stupid windows drive icon on my deskop...
- Doji, on 07/20/2008, -0/+2You can tell it not to put shortcuts to mounted volumes on the desktop. Press alt+F2, type gconf-editor, go to apps > nautilus > desktop and uncheck volumes_visible. Once you do this you'll have to access things like ipods through the places menu or 'Computer' window.
- Peterix, on 07/20/2008, -1/+3It does mount ntfs automatically. And that makes me RAGE every time it puts the stupid windows drive icon on my deskop...
- Vadi0, on 07/21/2008, -0/+2afaik ubuntu does mount ntfs automatically o.O
- rlbond86, on 07/21/2008, -0/+2Meh. There's more exciting, deep, and customizable distributions than ubuntu. I don't use ubuntu for the same reason I don't like using windows: there's a bunch of "hidden" stuff going on, and if you change it, everything breaks. Try to secure your workstation by enforcing sudo restrictions... BOOM! Your OS has destroyed itself.
- gagahput3ra, on 07/21/2008, -0/+1I am excitedly waiting for this release. As Vista's getting worst everyday....
- pHr34kY, on 07/21/2008, -0/+3Dugg for pointing out FakeRaid support. I once lost my mind trying to dual boot Windows on FakeRaid...
- PRGUY85, on 07/21/2008, -0/+2Hope the Ubuntu team realize the new dark theme is not getting much approval from most alpha testers right now. They should just refine their current look to try to have a better looking fresh install look to gather better notice from the casual user used to the blues and transparencies of other "top" OS. Yet, just adding some simple stuff and trying to keep the orange/brown somewhere (like menu selections, some borders, etc) will be enough. Linux distros are not easy to implement with dark themes.
- CarzorStelatis, on 07/21/2008, -0/+2A working audio system?
- pjman, on 07/27/2008, -0/+2+ for dmraid
