- vixxy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It's ok Michael. They're kinda scary as well. :)
- frem001, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2What i find amusing is that these kinds of developments don't work in the united kindom, but because the chinese have a strong sense of family and community they don't experience the social problems found on uk council estates. innit
Social worker: All I want to know Vicky is where is your baby?
Vicky Pollard: Oh, I swapped it for a Westlife CD.
Social worker: Oh my God, how could you.
Vicky Pollard: I know, they're rubbish. - BugMeNot2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0 •_•

http://www.kochgallery.com/artists/contemporary/Wolf/ - klaymen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0holy hell. that is insane. so much for little towns where everyone knows each other.
- nevin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0that is kinda crazy. i think i could live there, but i wouldnt want to.
- ketsugi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0That's par for the course here in Singapore too, though this particular picture looks like an extreme case of urban housing in Asia. I've always lived in a high-rise apartment flat and majority of the population here does, too. No big deal. Can't help it when you're a small island nation with barely any real estate.
- mediaphile, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@jianshi
oh noes!!!1 not (gasp) adult material! - gamabunta, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Think thats something, you should google Kowloon.
- Kindred420, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0wow,i dont think I could manage living in such confined spaces. very cool link
- notfoundyet, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Some of these photos actually aren't that surreal, they do actually look rather tightly packed IRL, as most as much as the photos. However, HK still rocks! (It's my "hometown", you see) And if I'm not mistaken, most of them are taken in Kowloon..
- Gawd_it_HURTS, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0"but because the chinese have a strong sense of family and community they don't experience the social problems"
Are you ***** nuts? First of all, you have NO idea what kind of "social and family" problems the Chinese who live IN China are having because it's a closed ***** communist society. Your second point about why this kind of housing crap works for the Chinese is simply a matter of logistics. There are TOO ***** MANY Chinese and they haven't gotten their ***** together enough to properly invade another country and build some decent apartments there! - Jimzip, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yeah I was in HK about a month ago. It's surely overdeveloped, they're even carving out mountain-sides to make more high-rises, but it's not as insane as the images suggest. The artist is just getting up real close so you can't see the surroundings.
I digg it though. They're strong photos regardless.
Jimzip :D - hkpuipui99, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I would like to add, as someone who lived in Hong Kong for 15 years, HK is very different from China, at least in terms of living conditions. HK is a developed city thaz on par with NYC and Tokyo, and miles ahead of any other mainland chinese cities...
also, those buildings featured in the photos are all lower class public housing built by the government back in the 60s and 70s, latest 80s... compare to projects built around that time in other parts of the world, and focus on the facade and cut out everything else in perspective, such as a park right in front of the buildings or a lush mountain behind it, you should get something equally overwhelming. - someaznguyny, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0They're mostly from Kowloon. All those housing projects were built in the 60's - 70's when the government were desperate for housing.
- drunkjack, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0People weren't meant to live like that. Sardines were meant to die like that.
I can barely stand living in the suburbs. And we've got a yard.
Soon as I can I'm heading for the hills. I've seen people blame technology for the stress on modern man.
I blame living in such close proximity to a lot of other people. - LittleOni, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It's amazing to see the conditions under which humans are capable of living in. Those were some really nice photographs and the composition was really well done. These pictures do a really great job at making the viewer feel claustrophobic and towered over, even in a small format. I'd love to see a gallery of these blown up to about ten feet tall, then placed next to each other without gaping. Imagine a the feeling that the viewer would have in a filled gallery of these works like that. It would be an excellent way to allude to the overwhelming oppression that the Chinese government has on its people. Digg
- LittleOni, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0^^^Graphic Design major. I couldn't help the critique.
- uncutnyc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Andreas Gursky and Thomas Struth did this sort of thing earlier and better. Wolf is very good, but not an original. Derivative like Edward Burtynsky. Tech websites really seem to go for this stuff.
- version30.x, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The propaganda section is interesting...
- unclejesse0, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Those pictures are incredible.
- partsguy74, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Dude... I seriously saw a naked woman through one of the windows on the third photo...
- BigDumbGuy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0What's the problem? Why don't they just move to a nice 3-flat in Mid-Levels?
- zenghost, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0man that place has no sky or horizon...and i thought new york was crowded...digg.
- SpankyPants, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0WOW
P.S. It won't work in firefox for me! anybody else have that prob? - Cubicfunction, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I travel to Hong Kong once a month.
A bit of a different but similar perspective of Hong Kong.
No propaganda. Just some street shots.
