Google does not censor results for any search term. The order and content of our results are completely automated; we do not manipulate our search results by hand. We believe strongly in allowing the democracy of the web to determine the inclusion and ranking of sites in our search results. Gotta love it when a corporation wraps itself in words like "democracy" & gets burned - laughterkillsme, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Google censors websites, tens of thousands at a time .. for america because it doesn't want to be liable for what people find.
I'm sure it's worse in china. - darkfire, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Google China is like a hate engine. Those results are too negative
- micral, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0they censor wtfpeople, complete assholes!
- hapy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Google says one of its rules is Don't Be Evil. But isn't censorship evil?
- eyrieowl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1interesting. although mostly i found it interesting to see what pages google.cn DOES allow. more than i'd have expected, to be honest.
- ScoTTeh, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1"Google says one of its rules is Don't Be Evil. But isn't censorship evil?"
Whats worse, limiting your results? or not giving China any at all. Thats pretty much the choice they have, I think they've taken the lesser of two evils. - lukeo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1google.cn search: "evil chinese emporer" = 536,000 results
google.com search: "evil chinese emporer" = 1,840,000 results
I sense sensership! - rft3rd, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1and the libs think we have it bad in America... Pffft... get a grip
- RyeBrye, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I did a less comprehensive comparison on a blog entry I posted today:
http://www.ryebrye.com/blog/2006/01/26/the-world-according-to-googlecn/
The funny thing is to do the image search for "tiananmen square" on both sites... Oh - and you can make your English google.com censor results too - just tack on "&meta=cr%3DcountryCN" to the end of the search URL (you may have to edit it if you already have a meta, or if you have a different country code in there) - Laurent, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Cool! Both my websites aren't censored... I might start to talk about Dalai Lama...
- MonkeyBoy1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2
What a disgrace. Google should be ashamed, and no, I don't agree that giving a limited set of results is less evil than no results at all. Google are colluding with the Chinese governemnt to give their citizens false
propaganda. Better to have priciples than to sacrifice them for a quick buck. - VenDrake, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1It's not that Google is sensoring, it's just that thier pigeons in china are somewhat biased on some things:
http://www.google.com/technology/pigeonrank.html - felchdonkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0What's your point, rft3rd? Is spying on your own citizens and prohibiting some speech good or bad?
Since China does it a LOT, should we do it just some? Is that your idea of loving your country? - OBKenobi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0The Falun Gong are a bunch of fruitcakes anyway.
- MasterIamNot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I am truly sad about Google's decision to support an oppressive government. The only reason Google went into China is for ad revenue. They have enough money to make a stand and say "we do not support censorship" But they took easy road. Easy isn't always right. Now when our government asks for search data, how can Google refuse? Hypocrites.
Another sign democracy is dead. - saintStephen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Apologies to anyone who finds this obvious and self-explanatory.
Google did not choose lesser of two evils; they chose presence in a market of 100 million internet users. Google is a corporation, and like every other, driven by profit. Cute slogans like "Don't be evil" are being pushed forward for the specific reason of concealing that fact. - peregrine, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Google.
What are you thinking take a stand fight China. They cannot touch you in America your fine. So what if you loose some revenue your an comapny built on good ideas for doing what is right.
And allowing Communism and censorship control you is wrong. Dangit google stop censoring. Fight for the people.
I think its said best here.
"If your not a part of the solution your part of the problem."
Google welcome to the problem.
~ - doafhat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"google.cn search: "evil chinese emporer" = 536,000 results

I sense sensership!"
I sense poor spelling! - garg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Why can't the chinese people just go to google.com? Is google.com banned in china?
- jumjum, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It's amazing that a bunch of moron politicians exercise that much brutal power over a populace to begin with. That's the true disgrace. Such ridiculous things won't even be able to happen in the future, hopefully within the decade.
- techie4life, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0LMAO- Googles search engine will deliver different results based on where it thinks your form to make results more relevent.
"Google censors websites, tens of thousands at a time .. for america because it doesn't want to be liable for what people find."
Lets see some proof, because obviously their not doing a very good job of it. Evin IF they did and you have a problem with it, build you own damn search engine. - DiscoLoke, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Glad to see you guys taking an interest in the intellectual freedom of our Neighbors in the east. Sad to see that even Google can be evil when given money... China might be a new market, but what is that market worth without freedoms, the internet was founded on freedom, freedom to think, freedom to say, and freedom to divulge or not divulge information. I am saddened by Google. BOO THIS MAN!!!
- DigitalAnarkist, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It's not unusual for websites to have to follow the specific laws of specific countries. Ebay removes all Nazi-related items from Ebay Germany, for example, because the sale of such items in Germany is illegal.
All business need to comply with the laws of the countries that they do business in. - Cinder6, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Actually, these filtered results aren't NEARLY as bad as they have been made out to be. A few were apalling, but it is very interesting what *is* allowed to be shown. This whole "Google is terrible because of this" thing needs to stop. Google does not have political clout in China to make sweeping reforms in the country. They are a corporation with obligations to their shareholders, not to some self-righteous cause that a lot of people seem to think they should.
If you want to get mad at someone, get mad at China for mandating the censorship. It isn't as if the Google execs thought to themself, "You know, let's screw China over, today. That will surely help our PR!" - styryx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Is it more evil to censor some results with the hope that it will become better in the future, and you can be part of working towards a positive change (maybe) or is it more evil to stand by your principles in doing so knowing that a seriously crap company would get into China instead?
Seems catch 22. Although the difference in those search results was insane. Then again if you're searching for Chinese webpages then most are going to be from the government, purely based on googles relevance search parameter doowacky.
Tough call, and controversial all round. - saintStephen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0discoloke, although internet was partially developed in regards with the values you mentioned, it is this internet of ours that they are about to fundamentaly change... Major steps are under way in introducing safe computing to protect us from all evils that dwell on internet, and offcourse to stop pedophiles and terrorists. And killer bees. --- Welcome, Trusted Platform Module!
- usermac, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I am so disappointed in Google. Profit can't possibly be the reason if I understand they have billions in cash reserves. Honor should have been the right choice. Oh wait, we, the US are spying on own own now too... forget it.
- logofpi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If Google will do this for $, what else would they do?
By 'this' I mean allowing for more technologically advanced ways to oppress people. Am I being too harsh? - MikeCampo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Why don't they just use Yahoo instead?
- saintStephen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Because their entire traffic is being filtered through china's "Great Firewall".
- james481, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0+1 for realism
Google isn't some "hippie love fest" corporation! They do things just like any other corporation, for the $$$. They aren't here to impress us with their high moral standing! Besides, doesn't their technology impress us enough? - benlevon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I am contacting the webmaster of Google.
This will be resolved shortly. - plmnpl, on 10/12/2007, -4/+0cut all the crap! I am a Chinese average ppl, i never felt oppressed. COMMUNIST Part rock!!! I love communist. silly yankee.,,,, rednecks, get eyes on your own business. ***** to your Bush Junior. please.
if google and any other you american companies want to do biz in China, respect our law. or out!
free tibet? ? tibet has always been part of China and it will ever be. stop dreaming get it away! silly kids.
fa lun gong? what junk? fu lun gong sux! - TKDWILSON, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"""""Why can't the chinese people just go to google.com? Is google.com banned in china? """"""
Yes. www.alltooflat.com used to have (and still do I think) a 'mirror' of Google that bipasses the chineese firewall. And I do mean mirror. It was a working mirror image of Google.
Eric WIlson - rubysoho, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0google agrees to support "local laws" apparently whatever those might entail, really disappointing, would have probably done whatever the Nazi party would have wanted in WW2 as long as it was a local Nazi law. same as coca cola did with fanta in WW2, looks like google is up for a fight for informational freedom only if that fight takes place in the 'land of the free'
- plmnpl, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0your goverment is spying on you... wiretaping on you.... do not turn blind eye to this. do sth about it before you put your finger to other's business.
stupid american. - lepton, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0So they censor according to language setting, not physical location? I wonder if you are an English speaking person in China, set Google to English and do the search, do you get all the results?
- whnphl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Am I the only person who sees how much of a hypocrite Google is?
"hi, umm, yea I cant let you see our search results (ones that don't track down individuals, but just show general stats about what people search for) because we believe in 'civil liberties', but um yea...China, for YOU! we will censor a allot of crap for you're gov (civil liberties ftw)."-that's basically what they are doing/saying - plmnpl, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0I am Chinese, i do not want use google.com! i use : baidu.com. it is our preference. silly american.
look below ! what a silly wishful thought! crap!

I admit though, the results are a lot more open than I imagined. Has the Great Firewall been exaggerated? - plmnpl, on 10/12/2007, -4/+0
look below, what a stupid comment! as Chinese, we use www.baidu.com. not google. not yahoo. stupid american! it is our owqn business. cut your crap!
Why don't they just use Yahoo instead?

Communist Party Rocks!
120% proud of being a Chinese.
China will prevail.
- mike_p, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Google is playing ball you morons... it's not a big surprise that in order to stay in business (especially with China's booming economy) you HAVE TO PLAY BALL. If you don't know what I mean, then... yeah I'm just not even going to bother trying to explain.
Google's censorship in China only furthers what the Chinese gov't is already doing to their people. I'm sure the majority of people in the US want to say ***** the Chinese Government... but we can't because they're the sleeping giant that the US was in WW2... - dongiaconia, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I think censoring searches related to Tibet DEFINITLY constitues supporting evil. No question in my mind.
- plmnpl, on 10/12/2007, -4/+0as a Chinese myself, I would like to say: PHUCK you american!
- scanderbeg, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2plmnpl, 3 words:
"so small penis" - altjeringa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Doing business with China in any way shape or form represents an act of evil. But then you'll have to attack Yahoo!, Microsoft, and well yourself as well. Buy anything from Wal-Mart recently? Own a pair of Nike sneakers? Shut up, or put up people.
We're all hypocrits, frankly I'd rather support companies who are at least attempting do good. Lets not forget the battles Google is fighting on our behalf on our own soil. Like the government demanding records about your search habits... M$ and Yahoo just handed them over. - KingChango, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0That is horrible, the censorship provides one sided views on very debatable topics. I can't believe that in this day and age governments still limit free speech like that, and control the information that people can recieve.
- Mediaright, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0You know, as much as I hate censorship, Google kinda had to business wise. China is too big a market not to go into. They'd be banned form China if they didn't block results. Listen to TWiT 25 for more on this. I think Google should be scolded for it and could have shown more opposition to this, but I don't blame them entirely for this.
