NYC Homicides since 2003 on Google Maps -- Where not to live!

- szelij, on 10/12/2007, -4/+40How many days till someone sues Google for causing a drop in the value of their homes? Haha...
- serpentor, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13A drop in the value of NYC real estate? Not likely, ever. As far as crime goes, Gentrification is our friend.:) It's simple really, everything gets priced into the sky and the leftover ***** gets shipped off to Newark, NJ. When was the last time you saw someone get murdered at The Gap or Starbucks?
- streetstealth, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6It might not be a stretch; I recall a recent story of a site suing Google over a sudden change in page rank that cost them tons of business!
Not that I agree with such wacky litigious behavior. - gmerin, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2apparently its having the opposite effect: according to Crain's (http://www.newyorkbusiness.com/news.cms?newsId=13514&bt=housing) apparently residential housing construction in NYC is "on fire" even as it cools in the rest of the country.
- ThinkBox, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12I think i saw most of these on Law & Order

- MrC539, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Good to know that none were near me.
- lawyernheart, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7closest one to me more than 10 blocks. Im also glad I decided not to move to park slope.
- jesusfresh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2what? do you know where park slope is? there are no murders there *at all*...the closest one was at 11th st and 5th ave
or is the "also" just a non-sequitur? weirder things happen, i guess.

Anyway the story here isn't really the Maps mash-up, but the internesting trends documented in the accompanying article. http://www.nytimes.com/2006/04/28/nyregion/28homicide.html
They look at all these NYC homicides and mine some interesting statistics. One is that if you live in NYC and don't spend time commiting crimes or with those that commit crimes, chances are pretty good that you will not get murdered.- gamekid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9That is so true. It's just a matter of staying out of bad people's business, and then praying that no one fires a stray.
I live in the Bronx, so I should know. - MrUnderbridge, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11"That is so true. It's just a matter of staying out of bad people's business, and then praying that no one fires a stray."
Reminds me of the Reno 911 episode where the cops teach prospective gangbangers to shoot better to get rid of collateral damage. - Wolfboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6through my work I examine a lot of murder cases. Most murders I see stem from disputes involving drug dealers (and similar criminal enterprises) or stem from disputes between husbands/boyfriends and their wives/girlfriends.
- balzin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Mr. Underbridge: That was Mind of Mencia, not Reno 911.

- ynggrsshppr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Check out the Bronx, it's shocking.
Not many in my neighborhood (southern Manhattan).- ilyag, on 10/12/2007, -1/+20My computer locked up for 30 seconds when I clicked on the Bronx.
- gamekid, on 10/12/2007, -11/+3"My computer locked up for 30 seconds when I clicked on the Bronx."
Mine only locked up for 10 so my PC's mom can beat your PC's mom in a fight. ;)
Interestingly, an area around Pelham Parkway, in the center of the borough, was homicide free in those years. (Interestingly, that's also where many of my crushes from high school and college seem to live around...)
He still duped my story ( http://digg.com/science/_New_York_Killers,_and_Those_Killed,_by_Numbers_ ) for the second time though. - Wolfboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Gamekid: Your entry didn't make the front page because your headline and description weren't as good. And because you didn't have the word "Google" in them!
- endgame, on 10/12/2007, -14/+4I'm shocked that there are that many murders in that city...WOW! I though LA was dangerous it appears NY is REALLY bad.....I would NEVER live there in fact I would be scared to death to visit. Although I wonder what Orange County, CA would look like....
- generalleoff, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12I was shocked how few murders there are in NY. I was lead to believe they had like 50 a day.
- fugazi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I always thought there there were at least this many in a day (from what everyone says outside of it), like the poster above... Is this just for that neighborhood or is it for all of NYC?
- obeseotron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15http://www.benbest.com/lifeext/murder.html
Scroll down, New York is on the 10 safest cities list, LA is on the 10 most dangerous. - macreator, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14You're not serious are you? LA has a much higher crime rate than New York. NYC is the safest big city in America.
- ilyag, on 10/12/2007, -16/+16endgame, if you knew any kind of statistics whatsoever, you'd realize that crime per capita in New York is MUCH smaller than most of rural and urban America. There are about 10,000,000 people in the city, and only about 500 of them are killed a year. The number might "seem" big, but do you have any idea how small a percentage that really is?
Most New Yorkers not only do not own any guns, but don't have any desire to own them either (for protection, or any kind of other purpose). Now compare that with your average rural American, always whining and complaining about needing to protect their home from "home invasion" (whatever the ***** that is), even though their house is in the middle of nowhere, surrounded by about 10 other families who all attend the same whites-only church. Maybe it's just me, but what I fear is living in a permanent state of paranoia, like you guys out in middle America (or wherever it is you live). - quick5pnt0, on 10/12/2007, -12/+12You dont know what a home invasion is yet you stand here on this soapbox talking about rural americans "whining" about it. Makes alot of sense. Maybe you should do some reading before making stupid statements like this.
- matt0baba, on 10/12/2007, -11/+8Well that is wierd...we have less murderes in canada than u guys in NY ...wow ...just another reason why canada rox!!!
- kremvax, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9For a city of 8 Million, this is an amazingly small number. Safer per capita than any major city in the country. And most small towns for that matter.
- KSava, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1NY is safe, at least where I live. I was surprised to see a murder about 20 blocks from where I live.
- danio, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11there is alot near schools
- obeseotron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Good to see my neighborhood isn't too bad. It would be interesting to see other cities with higher murder rates. Despite what some people seem to think, New York has the lowest crime rate of any major city in the US, including murder. It used to be over 2000 a year and is now about 500. I've lived here (lower east side, then brooklyn) for years and never heard a gunshot or seen anything worse than a bar fight.
- Tabasco, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10I'd like to see L.A.
- DoctorShim, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5I used to live in an apartment where someone was shot, just a few doors down. :/

- indiraider2, on 10/12/2007, -30/+9"Yet another reason not to move to Jew York"
***** you diggmann you stupid inbred piece of *****. You are the reason Americans are so dumb. Go move to Arkansas where you can be at piece ***** your mom. Nazi Slime
If there wasn't any Jewish people in America then America wouldn't be as prosperous as it is today. But you wouldn't know that diggmann because you are too busy living on the lower bracket of society, ***** it up for everyone.- rzebram, on 10/12/2007, -7/+15How do we know he didn't just miss the 'N' without noticing? The keys are right next to each other. Besides, this isn't a particularly mature response.
- Rickler, on 10/12/2007, -22/+4Without Jewish people we wouldn't have writers for shows like Lost, Prison Break, 24, Stargate SG-1/Atlantis, Battlestar Galactica ETC!! The world surly wouldn't be a better place. Just imagine every channel with shows like American idol and simple life written by monkeys.. suicide rates would be high. Gotta hand it to the Jews, they know entertainment.
- jabbar, on 10/12/2007, -13/+4I agree with rzebram. Also, in his defense of New York and somehow Jews, indiraider hates on Arkansas and somehow confuses 'piece' with 'peace'. Grammar continues to fail him in his anger, and he makes a statement that claims that America is prosperous because of Jews, not because it is the beacon of capitalism. If diggman is living in the lower bracket of society, should we not strive to elevate the quality of life so he can relish in all that the Jews have provided for you too, indiraider? Ignorance and anger are not a good combination for a coherent, intellignet digg comment.
- Rickler, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1Modding me down, you ***** nazis

- solarpowered, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Broken assumption: If someone hasn't been murdered in a particular part of NYC that it increases the chances you won't ever be?
Bah.- ilyag, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5That's exactly what it means. What are you confused by?
- Rickler, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Because metaphorically lightning never strikes the spot twice.
- streetstealth, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5No, but if you notice a certain pattern, like a lot of folks getting capped around Battery Park, it probably says something.
- kremvax, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4So you think youre just as likely to be shot in a wealthy neighborhood as a poor one? Or just as likely to be shot on the block with the bakery as the block with the parking lot where the drug dealers hang out? These sorts of things don't follow perfect random distribution, you know....
- Qtip42, on 10/12/2007, -9/+9Well who really wants to move to new york anyway?
Oregon is nice and peaceful.- RCHILD, on 10/12/2007, -3/+20and boring.
- psychopixi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5i adore oregon. can't help it. i was raised there and hated it all my life until i got out. now all i want to do is go back....and boring would be the last word i'd use to describe it. if you want boring, try florida.
- alex.will, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4California has something for everyone... California Uber Alles!
- RCHILD, on 10/12/2007, -6/+10This is not a map for "where not to live" but a map of "where not to act like a bitch ass *****".
- lawyernheart, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1What really suprises me is the lack of activity in Stuyvesent town (Not Bed-Sty), a huge 10 block projects area in the Lower East Side. If you look where other projects are there is definatley a higher concentration. This is NOT meant to insinuate anything other than economically disadvantaged people commit more drug offences, etc and therefore more homocides.
- alex.will, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Stuyvesant Town is hardly 'the projects', although it may have been at one point. Stuyvesant Town/Pete Cooper today is a very safe and comfortable residential community housing a large amount of students from NYU and others looking for large, affordable apartments. How can you argue with a huge apartment for low rent in the east village? I think Stuy Town is owned by MetLife and I hear they want to turn it into an expensive private development.
- lawyernheart, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0youre right I guess. I suppose its my antiquated view.
- ToadX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Wow... there are so many in Brooklyn.
- bpapa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Take a look at the areas though. Mostly around Bed-Stuy, a lot near Prospect Park. Not really surprising.
Look far south though, to Bay Ridge, and it's a much different story. Although that place looks like a giant Sopranos episode, it's a really safe place to live. I was there myself without an ounce of fear for a year.
- bpapa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Take a look at the areas though. Mostly around Bed-Stuy, a lot near Prospect Park. Not really surprising.
- Qtip42, on 10/12/2007, -2/+18I just snorted 8 lines of coke off a dead hooker's ass in my backyard and nobody cares. Oregon is great.
- molecool, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4You know how to party, dude... LOL
- Malchiah, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16I live in NYC and in case anyone was wondering...
- I am not in a gang
- I have never seen anyone get shot
- I have never been mugged or attacked, nor has my house ever been robbed
- I have never been arrested, nor do I know anyone that has
- I can walk the streets, ride the subway and take the rairoad in the middle of the night without fear
In short, I'm damn proud of our record on crime for the last 15 years. Now show me the map for LA and Washington, D.C. :)- AeonTorpor, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4'Knock on wood'
- hiredgun, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1yea me too...i live in sheepshead bay, which is great, but there are neighborhoods that id be definately afraid to enter (east flatbush, canarsie, anywhere in the bronx, etc.)

- sigginike90, on 10/12/2007, -15/+1MORBID YES... EXCELLENT BUT YOU KNOW WHAT'S EVEN MORE MORBID? MORBID CHID myspace.com/morbidchid
- molecool, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14I clicked on over a dozen of these links (in Manhattan) and every time the attacker was either latino/mexican or black. Tough to be 'color blind' seeing this...
And no, I don't care about being politically correct - just quoting the facts.- tdowling, on 10/12/2007, -12/+1And what exactly would your point be?
- festmonkey716, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12isn't it obvious... google maps is racist!
- molecool, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10My point would be that IF you get murdered in NY it's most likely going to be a black or latino/mexican male. I thought I made that clear. One 'might' keep these stats in mind when walking down a dark alley in NY one night...
- partyonaisle7, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Well, keep in mind that it's probably not just the murderers--most of the victims are also black/hispanic.
One way to look at this data without drawing the conclusion that "ethnic minorities are, by nature, more likely to be criminals" is to consider how separated racial groups are in NYC. For example, if there were a lot of murders in Russia, it might be partly because Russians are just murderers. But more people would agree that it was probably caused by poverty and the inability to get jobs in the area. If you think people can be separated even when they overlap geographically this should make sense. - tdowling, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6No, I mean what's the point of pointing this out? It's natural that the poorest people in any given area will commit the most violent crimes. In most urban areas, those people are minorities. But I'll tell you what - if I'm walking down a deserted dark alley by myself, I'll be just as nervous if I see a white guy heading toward me as I would if I see a black guy.
- thejohnfloyd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4just to note, most of the latino/mexican murders arent on the /mexican side of things... have you seen the amount of peurto rican flags in nyc?

Wow, I'm laughing and crying at the same time. - babbling, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Why male?
- thinkdifferent, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Problem with statistics is that it's based on the sample data. If most of the murderers they caught were latino/black, that doesn't necessarily mean that most of the murders were committed by latino/black attackers. You need to also know how many weren't caught. Put simply, if there are 100 murders & we know the race of the attacker of 40 of them, we can't say anything about the other 60, the sample size is too small.
- MrGeneric, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6In the USA every year, more than 30,000 people are shot to death in murders, suicides, and accidents. Another 65,000 suffer from gun injuries.
That is a whole lot of pain, and it makes Iraq look no less safer than living in the USA. http://www.antiwar.com/casualties/- ipodman715, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Yeah, it's pretty sad..
- kolop1, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5 Yeah, but who cares about suicide. If you want to kill yourself who cares. Suicide does not count the same as murder to me. I would rather you kill yourself, than kill me.

I wonder what happened there.- Daniel591992, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This was close to there (found on google)
FRI, SEPT. 8th, 2:00 a.m. – 1480 Popham Ave. Three gun wielding black males pushed a 43-year-old male Hispanic into his apartment. They then bound the man with tape and placed a pillowcase over his head. The apartment was ransacked and approximately $300.00 was removed from the premises. The police department responded to the location, and the victim was found suffering lacerations to his face and other minor injuries. The premises were secured and then the surrounding area was canvassed. Unfortunately, officers were unable to locate even one of the three perpetrators. The investigation is ongoing. - Qopax, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1seems different, anyways, i thought domestic meant something else

- Lumiras, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6It's really interesting that Staten Island, home of the Wu-Tang Clan, is by far the least violent of the burroghs
- kazem, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Dude, Wu-Tang Clan ain't nothin' to f*** with. I think that people aren't killing each other in Staten Island out of fear of the Wu.
- bpapa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Well, there are millions of murders on Staten Island each year, but they are all unknown because they are commited by Ninjas and Wu Tang practicioners.

Especially in NYC.
- vertinox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Actually, its getting better.
- reddevil3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Interesting how Manhattan had 66 homicides in 2003, 64 in 2004 and 66 in 2005. Pretty consistent.
- eamon1986, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Wow I think their is more murders on that map than there was in Canada in the last 5 year.
- cwoolf34, on 10/12/2007, -8/+2@ the jewish comment... You guys love to feed trolls. Since when has digg been the place to take things personally? If you buy into his/her prejudist comments, you are no better then them. For once it would be cool to see people just not respond to stupid comments like that, or at least come up with a clever comeback that doesn't come accross as sissy as "I'm telling my mommy." Most people that visit digg are more intelligent then that and know not to get caught up in this trap.
The map is taking forever to load, I have pretty much given up on ever reading links from digg. If you don't get to the story's link before it hits 200 diggs, it usually is an agonizing wait time. I am going to take a crap and come back...
update: still not done!?!- moondog, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4cwoolf34...you must speed crap to edit your post before the edit timer runs out on posting. Impressive!
- slicedoranges, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Not to be racist, but there sure are a lot of black suspects...
- alex.will, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Statiscally, if you are white, you are more likely to have a crime commited on you by another white person. So maybe you should cross the street when you see a white person walking towards you?
- jasqwerty, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1And if you're black and male, your chances of being murdered seem at least a few orders of magnitude higher to begin with than any other group, and almost guaranteed to be committed by another black male. How's that for statistics?
- alex.will, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Very interesting statistics jasqwerty, you get a sticker.
- jasqwerty, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Do I get a cupcake too?

- asdfasdf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Most homicides are caused by, or for Methamphetamine. The answer to crime is to legalize drugs.
- BlackHatFerret, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Wow I thought Bronx would win but hey Go Brooklyn!
- WeThePeople, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Cool map, NYC is an amazing town, I was amazed that no murders happened in central park in the last 3 years! and only 25 in lower Manhattan last year. I read somewhere central park was one of safest parks in the country, not just in murders but all crimes.
I wonder what the rate was in the late 70's? or what the single worst year was. I do remember there was lots of murders in Times Square back then, most people would avoid Times Square after dark, now in the last 3 years only 1 murder in TS! Even 20 years ago things were a lot different, I still have friends that think your nuts to go to central park after dark:) or walk down Broadway to the village late at night, It just seems things get safer every year in NYC.
Your twice as likely to be murdered in Columbus Ohio then NYC and over 6 times more likely in DC or Detroit. - wicked6, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0http://detroit.areaconnect.com/crime/compare.htm?c1=Detroit&s1=MI&c2=New+York&s2=NY
Detroit's still Nr. 1 almost across the board by comparison. Makes me all warm and fuzzy to be living right next door.- WeThePeople, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Nice web site wicked6, you can check any city with that. I found out where all the crime went from NYC, it went south to New Jersey and Philly! I found a few places I would rather not go, for one Atlantic City beat Detroit in 4 of the 7 categories and even beat out LA and DC in some categories. And Camden kills Detroit in murders.
I can't believe some of these stats, some cities in Jersey have some really high % of crime compared to the worst big cities, Las Vegas ain't great but AC still looks worse % wise. Very interesting site. - vertinox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Hehe... I compared Detriot to Camdem, NJ.

It turns out that you are more likley to get murdered in Camdem, but more likley raped in Detroit.
And your more likley to get your car stolen in detroit, but you are more likley to get robbed in Camdem.

- ilyag, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Yeah, they should all shove each other into woodchippers to resolve their drug-related disputes!
- filovirus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Staten Island is looking like a decent place to live.
- alrapp, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1So looks like most of Manhattan is unsafe and I should move to central park. interesting idea nonetheless.
- Lousansano, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Great , the bulk of the killings are right near where i live
- squirt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3In looking at the "South Manhattan" portion of the map, it appears no murders took place along the waterfront. Thus I will conclude that the best place to live is in a van down by the river!
- Falc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1the user interface is pretty slick and intuitive
