- MrMysterious, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Neat stuff! +digg
- MrPockets, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Someone explain to me exactly what a zeitgeist is, i saw the title and left because i was confused.
- sirmasterboy, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0^ Same here :-| ^
- agarc, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0I digg it!
Seriously, this put a smile on my face... What a fun way to show their data. - nativeraver, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2 zeitgeist-
A German term meaning "spirit of the time." It refers to the moral and intellectual trends of a given era - agarc, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2zeitgeist: "The taste, outlook, and spirit characteristic of a period or generation." (dictionary.com)
- Chewie67, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2How on earth is Janet Jackson the most popular search? Didn't her 15 minutes of fame run out 30 years ago?
- super_structure, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0One of the coolest charts is for "London." You can see, I think, the almost steady searches for the word throughout the work week and dips every weekend. Amazing just how repetitive that chart is.
- silasfank, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2"How on earth is Janet Jackson the most popular search? Didn't her 15 minutes of fame run out 30 years ago?"
One word, Superbowl.
What I wanna know is why so many people need computer desks... - TRUEPATRIOT, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1i never believe the number 1 search theres no way its nor porn
- crapiolio, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Porn is always filtered out!
- butlershouse, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0a New google feature I would like to see is ...
You enter a search phrase and it returns the very first time that phrase was requested and the results it produced then.
Then id like to see the Graph ( Zeit'ified) to show the popularity of the phrase .
Now that would be cool - super_structure, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I also learned a new word today:
dictionary
n : a reference book containing an alphabetical list of words with information about them - ajbalash, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0I found it to be a little random and not very much, but the things they showed were interesting.
- CiceroGuru, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Yet another shining example of virtues of the collective information of masses and what it tells us about ourselves as individuals
- mesostinky, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Meh. Bring back the web browser tracker already.
They can take money to plaster AOL ads everywhere but a simple graph which showed which browsers and OSs were gaining or declining was too controversial? - themeparkphoto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2What's the point of searching "Froogle" for iPod? Apple price-fixes them!
- super_structure, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4"What's the point of searching "Froogle" for iPod? Apple price-fixes them!"
Yes, but if you look at the other search terms (that both Michael and Janet were in the top ten), you get a sense of who you're dealing with here. - kenelbow, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0CiceroGuru said "Yet another shining example of virtues of the collective information of masses and what it tells us about ourselves as individuals"
- Dummies102, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0interesting to see that some version of the ipod made the froogle list 4 times, and "mp3 player" once more
also interesting to note the impact of file sharing with Ares being 2nd. Similar programs share similar rankings on sourceforge - SidewalkPilot, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0cool as always. oont oont. doopaduck!
- vvvv, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It would have been more informative if Google had numbers on those graphs. As it is, it is impossible to tell how big the increases in search frequency were for the different search terms.
- grayBot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4wow... look at all those clean 24 hour oscilations.....
anyone else freaked out ( in a good way ) by these global brainish waves ?
As cool as this I just cant stop wondering... couldnt google pretty easily predict the stock market for most retail companies via real time macro search data...? - mlebeau, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Anyone notice that the alt tags are all messed up on the images? They clearly just copy-pasted the html; under "Phenomena", the alt tags are all from the "Movies" section.
- DewayneSmith, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Who the Hell is Janet Jackson, Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie, Shakira, and Sean Prestion?
- DarthGordolf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0the only problem i have with the zeitgeist is that a product released close to the release of the zeitgeist will not have AS many searches for it as a product with equal popularity would have that was released at the beginning of the year. take the xbox 360 for example. the xbox 360 hype is comperable to the hype of the tsunami and katrina yet, since they happened earlier in the year, there was a greater amount of time for those topics to be searched. the 360 probably would have had that many searches, but its release was near the release of the zeitgeist.
- badnewsblair, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Very cool. he charts are beautifully done.
- super_structure, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@DarthGordolf: If that were true, then there wouldn't be the time-sensitive spikes in the graphs. If the XBOX 360 had the same number of searches as two large natural disasters (which I doubt it did), then it would have shown up as a spike around November, which the graphs all include (see Black Friday under Phenomena).
- lego, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0For those of you that seem to think "myspace", "ares", "baidu" and "wikipedia" are the top search terms of the year, they're not. Those are the top gainers for the year.
- techvivek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Cool Stuff!!!!!!
- bemaniso, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Funny how all the big time sites are trying to release new stuff the fastest they can so their on top of their competitors.. seems that googles the first to a lot of stuff but its kinda scary how much information on us they could and probably are logging.
Google could probably give a huge description of us by using their logs, with all the different programs and sites that have now and in the near future.
google search - you search for the things you like and need to know about
gmail - logs all your mail
firefox extension - send them all your posts and sites you go to.
keyhole/google earth - you probably search your hometown if not even your house
google messanger - all your friends that you talk to and your chat logs about what you talk to them in private
froogle - what you buy/like to buy
new mobile gmail, etc - they know your cell # and phone stuff
save search history - doesn't log in cookies so you know their storing that data
personal home page - what sites you like to hear rss news from
blogger - you tell them your personal stories and facts about your life
groups/news - knows what you search for in news and what you read most often about
and many other things they have
Not that i am anything against google (I pretty much use all of their stuff) but if you think about it, its scary how much info they could have in the future about us. - ElectricGrandpa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Anyone else notice that the alt tags on all the charts say "Harry Potter". That's pretty poor fthat nobody at Google noticed it...
- rc_collins, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0If only I could type in a keyword of my own and get these graphs. The crap they list do me no good.
