- brian2k1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0So what do you do with a few million if you are digg? I have a small internet site that could use a few million for advertising and hardwar. Digg already has a huge and loyal following and has hardware so what's the money for?
- bruggerA, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0you think they can make a television channel to replace Tech tv i would donate like a thousond dollars if they did that
- Erukian, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Best of luck, I understand the need for financial assistance when you run a popular site. Google Ads only do so much..
I pray this site doesn't take a turn for the worse from this however.. Anybody remember IGN destorying communities? I'm not even suggesting that will happen.
Kevin and Alex, please fill in the details. Enough with the cloak and dagger stuff. I know you don't owe us a thing as your users, but we would be extremely greatful.
-Joe - gamabunta, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0"So I don't guess they need my $5 each month now"
They just like to ***** us $5.00 worth each month even though ads and investments are coming along. - Miyamoto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I wonder if any money will go to make more systm episodes.
- DevilsRejection, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0can i ask which VC decided to fund you guys?

- prelude619, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Good job guys! Just be careful because when investors invest they own you. I know this was just a stupid movie but it's a good exmaple of when someone buys you out....wayne's world....real life example...techtv...but you knew that. Just be carefull and lets keep on diggin'!!!
~mario - tpimental, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The guys at Paid Content are questioning the viability of this.
http://www.paidcontent.org/pc/arch/2005_10_28.shtml#052108
Seriously... why does Digg need $2.5 million? And more importantly, how are they going to pay it back? - SirChaos, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1It's all about money now....they don't care about us.....
Just look at the ads we have to see all the time and then they ASK US for cash to keep things going.....bah.... - foltsie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0congrats
- grendelboogie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Congrats! I hardly ever go to /. anymore.
- duranracing, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0NICE
- wwwhank, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm a little surprised this story has not been yanked... Thats what seems to happen when its a little juicy like this one.
- grendelboogie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Now, maybe you can make it load faster.
- Danny, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I wonder what percentage will be used to fund the drinking side of Diggnation? Special episode? It’d be great to see one called Drunken Diggnation!
- jonknee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'd be really interested in why they did this... Seems like it would be simple enough to hire an ad sales guy on comission and the site runs fine on existing hardware.
Maybe they wanted to join the crowd that lost a majority stake for no reason? - davidpb145, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I wonder if Alex can now afford AC for his appartment?
- JimXugle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wow. Just... Wow.
k0ngR@tz! - ronzick, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hey Kevin. Now you can buy a new car. Congratulations man.
- jacoplane, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Um, does digg have any sources of revenue? A free site, without ads. I love digg, but if I were a VC I'd have to question this. Is there a business model here?
- Funkly, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0congrats... thats all I'm gonna say about that...
- thatedeguy, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0but it is building separate ranked lists for other types of news
thatedeguy
http://www.thatedeguy.com - tobsterius, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Jacoplane: Digg has google ads going right across the top of the page. Turn off AdBlock ;)
- kevinrose, on 10/12/2007, -3/+46The biggest problem we have faced so far is keeping up with growth. This gives us some money to buy more servers (just ordered 12) and hire a few more developers to help Owen out. Once we get rolling, expect to see new features more often.
And don't worry, we still control the company. This wasn't some kind of crazy takeover, just an investment by some cool folks that believe in the digg community.
..and no guys - I don't get the money, it goes to the company to help us grow :P - pmhesse, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0jacoplane: perhaps you didn't see the google ads, on the right hand side?
- rileyjt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1>>
Seriously... why does Digg need $2.5 million? And more importantly, how are they going to pay it back?
>>
For the same reason Google needs $10 Billion - to help improve and grow their business. Good Service + Traffic + Ads = $$$, how do you think all these websites stay online? This isn't exactly a foreign concept.
Without funding and a solid business plan, popular websites simply get crushed under the weight of their own success. Here's hoping that Digg is able to improve and continue their services. - prezident, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm sure they are not giving them this money for nothing..Dollars to Doughnuts that their future plans were very interesting to the investors. On This week in tech they hinted about it but ..The "what" in their future projects escapes me right now.
