- nymphetamine, on 10/12/2007, -11/+71sweet, now i can ignore all the horrible things happening around the world and focus on the good news only!
- breakneckridge, on 10/12/2007, -2/+18Delivering the good news you need, now, more than ever.
- Petrarch1603, on 10/12/2007, -5/+31Perhaps some cynicism is valid, but at least this site provides a consistent message. I would not consume all my news from a website like this, but it is a nice alternative.
- greenbox, on 10/12/2007, -6/+20agreed, i mean have you ever read the morning paper lately? it's just so depressing.
- ProTrader, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12Well, bad news means more sales to the tabloid presses... which is a sad human trait - to follow bad news. Just have a look at our movies - all violence and anger.
We all need more of the good stuff. - Geterix, on 10/12/2007, -29/+3What a BS newsite. Nothing but a bunch of Eco-Freak headlines.
When I see a headline about the income tax going away or "Iran sinks into the sea", then I'll smile. - Silencer7, on 10/12/2007, -5/+18wow, the last good news they had for Iraq was December...
- Silencer7, on 10/12/2007, -9/+4oops, my bad, their search archives weren't up to date. Correction: THREE good things have happened in Iraq since Thanksgiving, though one of them is just a story about something that might start next year February.

Life is not Disneyworld. Grow up and deal with it. - economissed, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7@sithmat
Unless the bad news is going to cause someone to react in a positive way, it really does nothing to improve the individual's sense of well-being. Most people are passive consumers of news. Life may not be all sunshine and marigolds, but there's no reason to inflict a negative outlook upon oneself if there is nothing to gain from it (though, there are obviously situations where reactions to bad news could cause positive outcomes).
Further, since I believe the world is moving forward, I'd think that more news would be positive rather than negative. Yet, the news presented by traditional news media outlets is largely negative. For many people that's interesting, but it's as much a filter as this "good news" site. - finalWord, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Bad news is only meant to get ratings, because our masses can't seem to turn away from it. Ironically, the media seems only pseudo-concerned enough to scratch the surface and poll for reasons about U.S. society's growing anxiety. Uh, the reason is the media, Media.
The best point of Moore's "Bowling for Columbine" wasn't even the point of the movie, unfortunately. He touched on the growing fear and anxiety of American society fueled by the media and how you don't see that same daily fear and anxiety in other societies, because their media do not spew the elements to cause it just for ratings.
A GREAT couple lines from the movie "The Shipping News" sums it up best for me. The local news editor is passing "wisdom" to Kevin Spacey's character Quoyle. A storm is coming, and he asks Quoyle, "What do you see? What's the headline?" Quoyle says, "Horizon Fills With Dark Clouds". Editor responds, "Imminent Storm Threatens Village." Quoyle responds, "But what if no storm comes?" Editor: "Village Spared from Deadly Storm."
Gotta get the ratings. Gotta cause anxiety to get people to consume media to get the ratings.
But, you already knew that deep down. - Stevethegreat, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5@sithmat : "Life is not Disneyworld. Grow up and deal with it."
It isn't hell either. In fact it's the way you see things, the so called perspective of life you or sb else has. Disneyworld is a valid perspective of the world if you choose it to be, hell as well. There is a fact there, though, optimistic people have done much more than pessimists, we live in a world made of optimists. - sithmat, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3"There is a fact there, though, optimistic people have done much more than pessimists, we live in a world made of optimists."
Assuming much here?
If someone needs to look at the world through rosy glasses because they can't handle that the just-world hypothesis is null I doubt they can make any meaningful contributions to society.
Should doctors pretend diseases don't exist? That way they can think optimistically, but hey, it doesn't cure diseases to think positively no matter what. - Stevethegreat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Pessimist here, you are right on what you say. But at the same time every person has the right to believe whatever he/she wants. My conclusion is more of a philosophical perspective than just a pure assumption.
- Continuum, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4"Should doctors pretend diseases don't exist? That way they can think optimistically, but hey, it doesn't cure diseases to think positively no matter what."
No, they should not pretend disease doesn't exist, that would just be ignorant. But if they believe they can cure it or will find a cure, that is optimistic.
I would rather my doctor tell me "Don't worry, we will do everything we can for you" than "Whats the use in trying? We are all going to die some day anyways!" - endersadvocate, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1@ProTrader:
not all movies are violence and anger...
look at brokeback mountain - cybortrip, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2there is nothing wrong with having a good news website as long as you dont forget that there is still bad ***** going on throughout the world. closing your eyes and pretending we are all safe and happy is simply ignorance on your part. i personally like to have a broad picture of both sides, good and bad, liberal and conservative, at home and abroad...those who confine themselves to a little box are in for some real shock and awe the second they step out of their imaginary world and into reality.

http://newsvine.com/ ..... goodbye greatnewsnetwork(what a horrible name btw)- emilng, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6How does newsvine do what greatnewsnetwork does?
I agree that greatnewsnetwork is a horrible name, but I like the idea of not having to see any negative news.
Overall, I'd rather see all the news rather than only what's good or what the leading media outlets want me to see. - shmatt, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5no news is good news.........
- Glidedon, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2Newsvine is crap !
Associated Press as a base and a bunch of moveon.org plants for commenter's.
- emilng, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6How does newsvine do what greatnewsnetwork does?
- tuxmelvin, on 10/12/2007, -5/+8Good news! There may be something called "global warming" occurring. Some scientists disagree, however others claim that the world temperature could increase over the next century, leading to nice warm days and less chilly nights!
- elnerdo, on 10/12/2007, -5/+12Good news! Iran could soon have nuclear power plants! Say goodbye to wasteful fossil fuels for Iranians.
- thiver, on 10/12/2007, -5/+11Good news ! US doesn't have 15.000 nuclear warheads as once thought. Just 11.000

- jawadde, on 10/12/2007, -5/+31maybe if you ignore the good stuff, it will go away too...
- syberghost, on 10/12/2007, -4/+19Everyone should read jawadde's statement and think about it for a minute. I'm not saying you should then turn to this website for your news, because some of the negative news is significant in your life as well, but jawadde has just said something that is truly profound and ignoring it, well, choosing to be ignorant.
Those of us who are in the US are seeing an increase in news reporting of violent crime, and surveys that indicate a greater percentage of people believe violent crime is increasing, at the same time as violent crime rates continue a decades-long downtrend that currently has them the lowest ever recorded. That's not news reporting; that's fear-mongering. - catdriver, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3@jawadde
You sir, have sliced through my cynicism. Thanks for the best comment I've read on digg. The world desperately needs reasoned, conscious optimism right now. You have to look for the light at the end of the tunnel. It will only find you if it's really a train.

- DaffyDuck, on 10/12/2007, -6/+11I understand the appeal of this but isn't this a little like burying your head in the sand?
- ilyag, on 10/12/2007, -12/+9A little like burying your head in the sand? That's EXACTLY what it is.
What kind of a callous disregard for your fellow man must you have to be in favor of this kind of thing? - mlmurray, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5You might have a point if our heads weren't already buried. Just because a story doesn't make you want to blow your brains out in despair doesn't mean it isn't legitimate news. I haven't heard anyone here advocating forsaking all other news sources for this one. It's just that this site reports stories that either don't get reported in the "mainstream" or "drive-by" [secret codeword for all my like-minded brothers and sisters] media or get buried on page 6 behind all the "bleeding" and "leading."
If you want to know just how depressing modern news is try this experiment: Don't watch any evening or cable news, just listen to music radio, and avoid newspapers for one week. I predict you won't have felt in a better mood since you were a child. I believe that having a source that can inject some positive news into our day that is normally otherwise barraged with doom and gloom might have a similar effect and may end up reducing the suicide rate.
Artificial mood elevation? No more so than Prozac!
- ilyag, on 10/12/2007, -12/+9A little like burying your head in the sand? That's EXACTLY what it is.
- TrevorBramble, on 10/12/2007, -6/+3I decided to run the completely opposite direction with http://killthe.net/ but you know, different strokes for different folks (and levels of depression medication).
- MrSpontaneous, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4Let me know when you're ready to pull you head out of the sand. Society's problems and issues should be addressed, not avoided.

- daza, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6Awesome, the only news sites out there are only ever talking about murderers, rapists or pedofiles, natural dissasters and whatnot. Here's an example from the front page of www.news.com.au -
Dead soldier was elite sniper
Six dead in aid plane crash
Darwin braces for Monica
Man drowns saving kids
Orang-utan seriously injures keeper
Two killed in market bombing
Soft drink up diabetes risk 80%
Father abducted from wedding
Man hurt in 4WD crash
Swimmer missing on far north coast
Trawler skipper search called off
Just to name a few. And of course they wouldn't be news sites unless they actually reported these things, but it would be refreshing to see something pleasant =).
PS. And although the Greatnewsnetwork is an unusual name, with the ammount of domains taken these days I'm even surprised they got that! - jaiwithani, on 10/12/2007, -6/+18This must be where the Bush administration gets their Iraq news...
- dignon, on 10/12/2007, -8/+10Finally, the perfect source for new for all those people living in DENIAL.

that sounds a lot like umm... uh..... digg maybe? - 5la5hd0tter, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2http://www.goodnewsindia.com
optimistic news from india. but this site is not just about good news - it particularly focuses on people/groups who work to make a difference. great place to read if you are interested in social service. - tizz66, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8I don't think of it as burying your head in the sand. Good news stories are difficult to find on normal news sites, perhaps not because it's their fault, there's just a lot of bad news in the world at the moment. The good stories get far outnumbered by bad news. This site is a good way of collating the good stories together if you want to find the lighter stories. Sort of how like Digg sorts the tech stories from everything else on the web.
- AlphaEta, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3I agree tizz. This site clearly isn't intended to serve as a primary news source, just a fun respite from the normal news. Whether or not mainstream news sites accurately reflect the state of the world is a debate I'd prefer not to engage in right now. I'll just say I like the idea of a "good news" web site!
- dsander, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Bad news makes a better story so you get more of it. That's what the viewers / readers want. I find it refreshing for someone to focus on the positive. It's only "burying your head" if it's the only news source you read. I'm sure most who read it still get other news as well.
- Drahknon, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8It was a warm, sunny day when Kennedy was shot... but I'd rather know about the latter than the former.
- LordRahl72, on 10/12/2007, -6/+6I hope this idea does not catch on. We in the US already mainly get filtered news so that we don’t see how bad the world really is. Something like this can only help to make our nation more uninformed than it is.
It would be nice to sit in your home and live in a make believe world where everything is fine and sing happy happy joy joy all day long. But this only helps to distroy our nation even further than it is.
The fact is for us as a democratic nation we need all the info so we can make informed decisions as to how we will vote and how we will want our voices heard if we see things going wrong in the world.
If we are all ignorant to the happenings in the world don’t be surprised some day when you get a knock on the door from some foreign official demanding you submit loyalty to your new country that was taken over while you where at home living in your make believe paradise.- Xsecrets, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2well if everyone follows your way of thinking they'll be knocking on my door because everyone else in the country committed suicide.
- DCUK, on 10/12/2007, -8/+1Are you so stupid you can't read more than one news source you *****?
- finalWord, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3You can't GET the kind of info needed to make truly informed decisions - not from our media and not from our politicians.
No one's saying get rid of unbiased news about the Iraq situation. But, let's balance out all the news about rape, murder and crime with something people can have faith in.

- bloodroot, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4It's great to be informed and all, but what do most people do with all the bad news
they injest daily? It just makes them more fearful and resigned.
Good news and ideas on the other hand breed creativity- LordRahl72, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4I say B.S.
What would give a person who is perfectly content the will power to be creative? Look at almost everything you use in your daily life and I would say most everything was created by someone that saw a problem and took it upon themselves to create something to fix the problem.
You would not have been able to type your message if someone had not seen a problem with how we computed information with mass piles of paper and decided to create something called a PC to help. You would not be able to go to the bathroom to take a dump and flush the toilet if someone did not see a problem with just piling your ***** in the corner of your room.
The thing is that it takes problems and bad news for someone to come up with creative ways to fix them.
- LordRahl72, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4I say B.S.
- cosborne2000, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Oh great, Pravda is making a comeback!

- chadell, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I'm an eternal optimist, but I still would like to know about the bad things that I'm avoiding.
Politicians like to avoid bad news, a good example is the British Health Secretary as quoted here, http://www.guardian.co.uk/uklatest/story/0,,-5774655,00.html - zatrix, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4ignorance is bliss

Ignorance is bliss... - arizonagroove, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3It's all good news from the point of view of those who run Great News Network. That doesn't mean it's all good news to everyone. ;)
- Pile, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2In contrast, my site is all about bad news, for people who need to know everything that's going on, so when jack-booted thugs come banging on your door, you'll have a clue why:
http://bsalert.com/
Good news is nice, but when corporations slowly take away your civil liberties, privacy and security, this is "bad news" you need to know about before it gets too bad. BSAlert is for that purpose. - dsander, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4You guys are all missing the point. What's wrong with a source of good news? It would be a bad thing if that's the only website or news source you ever looked at, but what are the odds of that. Since there's so much bad news in the world, does that mean when you are in a social group that is all you should discuss? or do you have some fun and tell jokes, good stories etc.? unless your Debbie Downer, we can all use a source of the positive news along with our negative news.
- infinity306, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Google news shows all news.. this site specializes in only good news..while it shouldn't be a primary newssource, it is good to use it to read the news that gets buried on page 14..
- Daychilde, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Okay, I appreciate the concept... but... am I the only one that sees a relatively sparse page of news?
- iamtheone, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0there is one more : happynews.com..thx for sharing
- cmplus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Bolivia just elected Eva Morales as president. He's the first native indian ever to hold the position despite the fact they represent two majorities; 1) Bolivia's most populus, and 2) Bolivia's poorest. The first thing he did as president was to meet with Hugo Chavez to discuss a new strategic alliance.
Now, most Bolivians probably think this is good news. Their man is in. He represents 'their' hopes and desires. Does that mean the 'great news network' should run their story if someone were to post it?
http://www.greatnewsnetwork.org/index.php/regions/news/Bolivia/
I guess not. Moral: My great news is not always your great news.
Like a previous poster, I prefer to leave the rose-colored glasses in the drawer. - royall64, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1On the home page I immediately notice the words government, war, and drugs.
- bs0l, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I must say this is a very good idea, if they had a news channel, they would get a bunch of viewers because people don't always want to hear about all the bad things like "15 killed in iraq today" or "global wamring causing huge chunks of ice to fall from the sky and impale children in a gym".

There never was such a time. The difference is that modern man does not want to be bothered with reality. Life is tough people suck it up. That or just keep popping your Prozac and Wellbutrin and anti social anxiety medications so you can live blissfully unattached from reality.

"Despite all the negativity reported in news today there is progress being made to better ourselves and our planet. The Great News Network exists to report it."
It's not meant to be a place to ignore the problems in the world. It assumes already that you know what they are. Look at all the stories on the fight against global warming. It's not saying that global warming doesn't exist. An important detail...
Regarding it's name: great news network - Maybe it's a slap in the face to catholic organizations that preach that the world is falling apart and the only thing we can do about it is nothing except wait for the "return of the messiah" to solve our problems. - treycopeland, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0you'll never beat out cnn
