- CraigB12, on 10/12/2007, -1/+39Comment whoring here, but it was awsome to see a throwback to old time hockey. They hit your captain, so you send out the troops. After watching all those pussy basketball and baseball games, its great to watch a sport where passion and team pride play a huge roll. KEEP IT UP NHL!
- econoar, on 10/12/2007, -2/+33The algorithm works by which category it is too. Obviously sports doesn't drop a ton to the front page every day, so if one starts to get popular, it has a better chance of hitting the front page with less diggs.
- Buddhist, on 10/12/2007, -2/+27Yeah, it was over Chris Drury getting "hit" and then falling on his head and slicing open his forehead. Then the Sabres coach sent out his toughest players while Ottawa's coach sent out his best scorers (Spezza, Heatley, etc.), and all hell broke loose from there.
That being said, Ray Emery is awesome. - antifreze, on 10/12/2007, -1/+25conspiracy? what are you smoking? and is that a tin foil hat I see?
the algorithm is a little more than ... if diggs > 50 then send to frontpage.
Anyways, what do you care? If you don't like the article, then just skip over it. Is it taking up space of an article you would like to see that is 5 inches down the page? - CraigB12, on 10/12/2007, -1/+24This is for people who think there shouldn't be fighting in hockey (quoted from Hockey37 below)
"You're right. Hockey needs fighting for several reasons.
Casual Fans: I can't tell you how many people I know/have talked to that when I say I play hockey, they ask if I've ever been in a fight, or that they go to games in anticipation of a fight. Many people only watch it hoping there will be a fight. More fans is very good for the NHL right now.
Players police themselves: Some people might not get this if they've never played. Look at the reason the brawl started. It was in response to a shot at Drury. If you go after a star, you're gonna get the ***** beat out of you, or someone will at least do their best and try. Without fighting you would have guys trying to take the heads off of Crosby, Ovechkin, (inset star player here) every single shift. This means more big names getting hurt way too often and most likely way too severely. No big names in hockey means less reason for people to watch.
Also, players fight "clean". Look at when Emery took Biron down. He could have kept punching and punching till Biron was a bloody mess. But it's part of "the code" that when a guy goes down like that and is defenseless, you let up. You think if that was 2 NBA players that it would have gone down like that? Answer: No, the guy on top would have kept punching.
Harsher penalties might be a solution (I myself don't think so), but taking fighting out would be the worst thing to EVER happen to the game.
" - profOblivion, on 10/12/2007, -0/+21You haven't watched hockey before, have you...
- MyPlasticHeart, on 10/12/2007, -1/+19Old School Hockey ... Love it!
- homercaholic18, on 10/12/2007, -1/+19That was the worst Goalie fight ever...Makes me Miss Patrick Roy Vs. Mike Vernon or Ron Hextall vs....well anybody.
- Perno, on 10/12/2007, -2/+18Graveyard, you are a rimshot gone wrong.
- ihlemic10, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12Coming from a USA Hockey ref-
You are taught only to break up a fight for 3 main reasons, a injury, if one has the upper hand, or one has an unfair advantage (such as taped hand, jersey over other guys head, elbow pad off, or Arm free from should pad, elbow pad and jersey). Otherwise they tell you not to risk your neck until that time, thats why the Linesman stand around and 'watch'. The refs (Zebra with orange armbands) do not break up the fights most of the time because they have to send players back to the bench and observe and call for penalties in the fight. - econoar, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14They still attacked...
the submitter mentions 5 people in the description and never says in the title that the goalies started it. - CraigB12, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14Yeah, Ottawa's coach said after the game that he wasn't thinking by sending out his first line against the sabres bruisers. I don't think this was a dirty hit because drury should have had his head up, but chris neil is a known dirty player and just a bad human being all around.
Also, what the hell was peters doing jumping in to fight emery? I don't get why a couple of senators didn't jump in to fight for thier goalie, thats piss poor.
@quickshot
If you don't see why Rupp sent out his checking line after a devastating hit on his captain, then you have no busness posting here. Hockey is all about defending your captain, and hockey fans love it for that. Those of you that think that gives hockey a bad name should just go off and watch the ice capaides. - SnuKs, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12What a hater...
I didn't know digg was a contest =P - rasterbator, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11Maybe a story grows in popularity when graveyard gets dugg down!
- CraigB12, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Just so everyone knows, they're playing again tomorrow night at 8... check your local listings for the channel. And this time, the sens will have McGrattan in the lineup, so its sure to be a good one.
- BrotherLuigi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9From a Buffalonian:
1. Ray Emery earned my respect last night.
2. The message from Lindy Ruff (the Sabres coach) was plain and simple: You go after our best players, we're going after yours.
3. Man, I would have loved to see the two coaches fight each other.
4. Chris Neil is a no-talent ass clown. - homercaholic18, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9its ignorance like this that shows me the vast majority do not understand hockey. Sportsmanship was very evident in this video, did you notice how on about 4 separate occasions the player fighting waited for the other guy to get up before he started throwing punches again? They respect each other and did not show cheapshots.
- CraigB12, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9It wasn't that big of a deal I guess because i'm sure they know Emery is one tough customer, but with all that chest padding on he was barely able to protect himself. But, all the smiling and laughing he was doing is a pretty good sign that he was having fun.
@quickshot
Thats how hockey has been sinse the 70's, and thats never going to change. You've got to put the fault on the ottawa coach for putting spezza and heatly out there with peters and mair. He even admitted it after the game that that was a mistake. - Nezzy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8how can you not love hockey
- quickshot56, on 10/12/2007, -8/+16Inaccurate title....
While the goalies did fight, that is not what the fight was started for, or centered upon.... - sencha5, on 10/12/2007, -5/+13... Or, as the NHL calls it, 'Thursday'
- MaddDog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Although the goalies didn't start the fight, it is traditional that in an all-out brawl, that the goalies will at least get involved. They can't really hurt each other with all of that padding, but it looks bad if everyone is fighting but the goalies are just standing around :)
"Sugar Ray" Emery had two fights - after he fought Biron, Peters was still looking for a fight and Emery was *more* than willing to oblige. His teammates weren't quick to jump in because they know a) Emery can take care of himself in this situation b)Emery *wants* to fight, why take away probably his only chance all year to vent his frustration? - sencha5, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8I thought the beauty of it all was that Emery just got off a 3 game suspension for high sticking some dude on the habs. That man is the future of the NHL.
- Karnatos, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9I watched the game; as an Ottawa resident I am happy the hit was a clean and legal hit (from what I could tell from the many angles we were provided). I don't know if it was an ethical hit, but I don't think it was illegal.
I feel that the brawl that broke out was inevitable with the players that were placed on the ice, and I wonder if Murray wasn't looking/expecting some trouble as soon as the puck was dropped after the Drury hit. I mean, Heatly and Spezza out there? Two prime targets - I was fully expecting exactly what happened, it certainly was no surprise to me.
Having said that, you gotta love Emery, I have to say he's awesome. For those who have not seen this clip of him in a fight in the minors (Binghamton, NY), this one is a gem: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AZzyOBhk5Uw
Keep in mind that Ray's a fan of boxing and I think he may have dabbled in it as a boxer as well. - nomadxx7, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8I love how at about 1:10 in the video you can see a Sabre guy and a Senators guy just standing, hanging onto each other yet are just watching the whole fight in front of them.
- mecole21, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8if this was basketball, everyone would be screaming about how thugs were ruining the game...
but its hockey! this was one of the awesomest fights ive seen! - tooker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6The sad thing for the NHL is that this is pretty much the most coverage a game has gotten in the US all year. It lead the 11pm Sportcenter last night and very little else was showed from the game which was a very entertaining 6-5 shootout win for Buffalo.
- scrag10, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6over 100 penalty minutes in that game.
- CraigB12, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Yeah emery had his wrist taped up becuase he broke it a long while back. I know emery boxes in the offseason, but i still think peters could take him. Peters has fought some of the toughest guys in the NHL and holds his own. He held a clinic for Brian McGratton last year, and Mcgratton is considered in the top three toughest guys in the league.
Youtube link to Peters kicking McGrattan's ass:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CrURQGlRKo - CraigB12, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5@quickshot
Yes, he is, and i'm sure he'd gladely take responsibility for having his players defend his captain. - CraigB12, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I watched about 600 different views of this last night, and drury was hit with a shoulder from neil in the chest. The only reason he spun around was because neil was comming from the side. I don't think anyone else in the NHL would have made this hit, its just that chris neil is dirty (this doesn't make it illegal, just unethical).
- Morphinity, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8Ray Emery was laughing through the whole thing. If he could have gotten his arm free he could have abused Peters, just like he did to Biron.
- Hockey37, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Emery is the last goalie I would face off against. He knows how to box and has taken lessons I believe. Look on YouTube for a clip of him from the minors getting in a fight. (Was posted a few above me during the making of this post) He's also a huge boxing fan, take a look at his mask. He wanted Tyson on his mask (well actually had, but took it off due to big-wig pressure).
- LatvianHedgehog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Is it me, or Emery was smiling almost the whole time ?
- Dgen_X, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Drury should have had his head up yes, but the hit was pretty late...would have been a clean hit otherwise
and while I don't like seeing the scorers being beat on by the tough guys...but a fight was bound to happen right afterwards - protogenxl, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5You know, I went to a Boxing Match last night and a Hockey game Broke Out.
-Rodney Dangerfield - profOblivion, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5To anyone who's interested, this one's got a twin over in the Videos section.
http://digg.com/videos/sports/Ottawa_vs_Buffalo_Player_Goalie_Fight_from_last_night
I remember laughing my ass off when I saw Emery smiling the way he was :D - eboulian, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Being an avid Ottawa Senators fan, I was happy to see the fight.
To clear up some facts. Emery didn't fight alone, he kicked Biron's ass and then got involved in another fight, cause well, Emery always wants to fight. This should be in the Video category, although it is also Sports News. The title doesn't describe the video too well, it should just be along the lines of the Video's title.
That being said, the initial hit on Drury was perceived by the coach as being an elbow. He wasn't wrong at the time to have sent out his bruisers. On the other side, the Ottawa coach should have done the same when he saw who was on the ice for Buffalo.
The fight was good, they game was great. Buffalo won in a 4th round Shoot Out. Not much more to say. - Dgen_X, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4B12...the video you posted was a clean hit...it was from the front, if Drury had his head up there would still be a pretty good chance that he would have seen Neil coming anyway
And I'm not a Sabres fan...I live in Detroit, and I'm just a hockey fan - nomadxx7, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4237 last time I checked. Stop being a comment whore graveyard. Enjoy the video and leave a comment or move it along. Geez
- CraigB12, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Post a source or you're argument doesn't hold.
- combustion8, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3here's another great hockey fight.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9z8l9d2ogqc - profOblivion, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I think Ray was protecting his left hand. He had an injury a little while back, and it still bugs him.
- wafflez, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3who cares how many diggs it had, it was amazingly entertaining =3
- troycott, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I was at that game last night. here's what should've happened. the drury hit should've been called. When the officials missed that call, they lost control of the game. That led to the brawl...
Any coach in the league would've done the same thing lindy ruff did. people who are calling buffallo out on this are foolish because if you know anything about hockey at any level, retaliation always happens under a situation like this. the refs blew it and this problem was a result of poor officiating.
BTW, #36 on buffalo, Pat Kaleta, it was his first game in the NHL, and he got slapped with a 10min misconduct after the brawl... hahaha welcome to the NHL. - calvmari, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3In other news, I went to a boxing match and a hockey game broke out!
- NickyBatts, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4The major problem with the hit is everyone saying he had his head down and he hit him with his shoulder.
A.) He didn't have his head down he was following the play you ***** idiots.
B.) Sure he used his shoulder to smash his face in, not a piece of Neil caught Drury's body and that ***** is garbage. The league wants to be respected as A great sporting organization but shows no respect for their players. There is a chance Peters could get suspended for beating on Emery, but really, what's worse? I don't think a single shot emery took could potentially put him out for a few games and Drury now has 30 stitches and most likely a concussion. In the end the NHL has no sack and Gary Bettman can go munch on a giant back of dicks. - CraigB12, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I agree that it was more from the side, but he should know to have his head up. I mean common, you learn that in pee wee hockey.
Oh and for the record I'm a bruins fan, just so people don't think i'm a sens whore. To be honest I hate peters and mair, but basically anything they could have done would have been warranted on Chris Neil. - Kyle660, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3If the entire world worked like hockey does, we'd be fine. Somebody would have beat the living ***** out of Premier Bush and cross checked Cheney face first into the boards long ago. If only.
- Nocturnal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3That video is just too surreal. I mean watching that thing looks like something straight out of a movie. Especially when the two coaches start to go at it lol.
