- benijuana, on 10/12/2007, -0/+65the arena is built on indian burial grounds
- shrewduser, on 10/12/2007, -5/+65no it doesn't....
- Aceanuu, on 10/12/2007, -7/+30Well when I first read the title, I honestly thought it said it was called on account of "frog."
- volcomguy32686, on 10/12/2007, -0/+19who's the smart one that accidentally put in dry ice?
- coreyb, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12I misread it and expected to see frogs on the ice... I was disappointed to see only fog. :(
- Dunadan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9It wasn't the players who called the game though...
- acrambler, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12If you seriously think that hockey players are a bunch of pussies, then you better go say that to a hokcey players face... cuz when you do, your gonna get your ass dropped by somebody who actually is "tough"
- JeffH, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10It's probably due to the lack of humidification as the other poster said. It was a NCAA game, so their stadium probably wasn't fancy.
- 5hoe, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10Does anyone have an acceptable scientific explanation for how this happens?
Perhaps it has something to do with high ambient arena temperature coupled with an inadequate ice-freezing mechanism? - chaimpot0k, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7What's causing the fog? Is the AC broken or something?
- RamanujanRedux, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Too bad, it would have been one for the ages if they had played. Inclement conditions tend to make for great sporting events. Like soccer in the mud and football in the snow.
- MrZop, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6High Humidity and a lack of a dehumidification system will create fog. this use to happen All the time back in the HNL before the really fancy buildings came along.
- OpCzar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Wow, this would never happen in Canada though.
- rockorager, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Definitely humid air passing over cool surfaces. I'm betting their dehumidifiers are running at low capacity...I work at a hockey rink part time and in the summer when we are running at high capacity for cooling, we can't have the dehumidifier on as much and it gets really foggy, plus the humidity in the summer.
So scientifically, as the (relatively) warm air passes over the ice it condensates and forms fog, and actual condensation on the sides of the glass
@JeffH, all rinks have dehumidifiers, fancy or not - iamdw, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6So you're saying you would travel around on ice at around 30mph with razers on your feet and limited visibility? Is a serious injury like paralysis or lacerations worth the time?
Oh, and noone would see the puck so how would they play anyways? It would be a horrible game to watch and the teams involved are cross-town rivals.
It was smart and the only choice available to reschedule the game.. - iamdw, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7yea but soccer players dont travel around 30mph with razer blades on their feet shooting hard rubber biscuits at 100mph...

The Sabres and Flyers played a famous fog game during the Stanley Cup finals 1975, a bizarre game that included a player killing a bat on the ice. Yes, he killed a bat. There is a paragraph about it here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buffalo_Sabres#Fog_and_the_Finals - iamdw, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Former hockey player from Boston so interested - was the game official, or has it been rescheduled?
I can't imagine a game being called ~9minutes into the 1st period. Especially a BU/BC game... - iamdw, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I would say with 100% certainty the high risk of injury would be the reason. I don't think the Schools, NCAA, or anyone involved would want to be responsible for a blindside collision at ~30mph...
- adidos, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Advection fog occurs when moist air passes over a cool surface by advection (wind) and is cooled. It is common as a warm front passes over an area with significant snowpack.
- rude1979us, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The temp outside was 70 degrees. Because the building doesn't have air conditioners the temp inside was 80 degrees (all that body heat). When the warm air hit the cold air just above the ice, fog was formed. It is all explained here: http://www.uscho.com/news/id,13215/FogOfWarBCBUGamePostponedDueToHighTemperatures.html
- Dawneb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2hah! that's funny, that happened a couple of times at Maple Leaf Gardens during the NHL playoffs a few years back.. hrm, okay maybe more then a few years. :)
- scottyc, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Yeah, the lights went out at a night high school football game one time. Even though no one could see, they shoulda kept playing, because neither team had an advantage......
- vhold, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2And unexpected zero-g in space station protohocker
- iamdw, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@ acrambler
have you ever seen fog before? When in a car, do you slow down in fog or keep at a normal driving speed? If you can't see 5 feet infront of you, how are you gonna make a pass or stickhandle?
With everyone looking at their feet, I would say adding limited visibility add 100% more danger.
bleh... - Grok22, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2not if you paid your activity fee
- giveer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This actually happened during an NHL game back in the 80's - it was in a blooper tape I had .. I can't remember all the details, but the main factor was a malfunction in the arena's ventilation. The air that would normally get pulled out got too hot/cold/whatever the conditions needed for fog. Huge fans + 30 minutes fixed it.
- carebearwarrior, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This happened during the Stanley Cup Finals between the Edmonton Oilers and the Boston Bruins. The Oilers 'sweep' in 5, due to the cancellation of a game at Boston Gardens.
- grachi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1can't say I've ever heard of a hockey game being called for fog! It was a college game though, so I imagine their facilities probably aren't as sophisticated as NHL rinks
- iamdw, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1ahh good to hear. I couldn't believe a game would be official after that short period of time.
- Dvoid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Why call it? It's not like all the fog is on one side of the rink...
Both teams have the same obstacle so it's not like one team has an advantage. - Roflman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1So...do I get a refund?
- mrcan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I have seen a basketball game called due to fog, the ice under the floor was melting.
The best game was the outdoor game the Canadians played a few years ago. - CapeKid, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I am surprised that they didn't have a riot on their hands.
- Zaszamonde, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I was at a game where they called it for about the same reason. The humidity spiked and the system didn't adjust so the rink was foggy and the glass was near-opaque. They called it off because the fans couldn't see the game. It had to be one of the funniest games I'd been to. There were no riots because everyone understood.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1yeah, randomly smashing headfirst into another player at 40km p/h is "fun".
Its a good way to kill people. - b04155, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Bobby Orr baby, Bobby Orr.
- bceagle07, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1BC student here....Conte Forum, where BC plays, currently has no AC and it was a muggy December day
they actually had problems a few days prior to this with the basketball game.... arena was very hot - PKBabaSoGud, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I was at the game. It was unseasonably hot that week and the rink doesn't have air conditioning (why would a hockey rink need AC if no games are played before November in Boston?). This isn't shocking news. Games have been called on fog in the NHL before, and it continues to be a problem in both college and professional hockey when weather is unusual or systems malfunction.
Oh well. The game will be rescheduled, and BC won the game at BU 1-0 the next night. - inline, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Smart move to postpone the game. For the first month of the season this year, in Geneva (Switzerland) at the Vernets Patinoire, when temperatures were above 20 Celsius outside, the fog was so thick on the ice that we couldn't see either end of the rink from the bench, and couldn't tell whether a goal had been scored. A good thing given an 8-1 thrashing, which we would have gladly done over without the fog..
- Dvoid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Watch the video. The fog is not THAT thick. Visibility is still high enough to see the figure of players on the other side of the rink (from the camera) ... at least their figure if not the mole on their left cheek.
- Gtitian, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1played hockey in high school. Fog is common, the video can of course be deceptive, but we played in fog that was that bad or worse.
- LeafOnTheWind, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0no comment sorry.. wrong thread..
- bceagle07, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0iamdw:
the game has been postponed to a currently unannounced date.
they will start exactly where they left off with BC on a power play in the middle of the 1st. - qasabah, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Edmonton Vs. Boston in 1988 stanley Cup final game 4.
The game was eventually cancelled due to electrical failure (which may explain the fog as well). They resceduled the game in Edmonton at what was then the Northlands Coliseum. The Oilers won sweeping the series 4-0. - pledomobil, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0Beautiful! I like such articles.
- billybob476, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Fog!
*run out of the street*
*wait for fog to dissipate*
*run back into street*
Game on! - ihlemic10, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Say that to me on the ice sometime...
- LeafOnTheWind, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I also totally read that as called on account of FROG lol.. i clicked thinking why in the world would they call a game on account of a frog.. But FOG? yeah i can see why.. and its hardly the first time.. doesn't anyone remember the Oilers vs Bruins Stanley Cup game that had to be replayed due to fog in Boston Garden, i was there, i think it was game 3 in 85 or 86.. dont recall exactly.. you couldnt see the players on the ice, i dont see how they could have kept playing, and if they did it would have sucked, no one in the place would have been able to see the game.. oh well.. but a frog invasion may have been much much worse.. LOL.
- LeafOnTheWind, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i was there.. glad to see someone remembers that game.. ( see my comment in mainline below. )
