- Cummings, on 10/30/2008, -1/+45Dugg for reaching the front page even with "HOCEKY" IN BOLD.
- Senturion, on 10/30/2008, -3/+31Rather than "most valuable" I'd call it "most expensive".
Value implies there is something of worth, which on the ice anyway is clearly not the case. - feyded, on 10/30/2008, -0/+23You can't really "buy" a good team in the new salary cap era. It'll take years of building through *quality* draft picks to create a contender.
- Oogler, on 10/30/2008, -0/+14You know it's the unequivocal support of the Leafs demonstrated by fans paying these outrageous ticket prices that provides little or no incentive for them to improve. The Teachers Pension Plan that owns the team only cares about return on their investment; not whether the Leafs make it to the cup finals
As long as Toronto fans keep paying there will be no downward pressure exerted from management to improve and so they'll just keep on sucking and cashing their fat pay cheques. - YourBrandVoice, on 10/30/2008, -0/+13From a business point of view, the MLSE do a great job in raking in large amounts of revenue. Ticket prices are high because they are in high demand. Leaf tickets are a great corporate incentive and corporate box seats are even better.
With a big chunk of the revenues coming from corporations, the fan gets stung in the end with high ticket prices or no tickets at all. It's a vicious cycle as a fan because you want to see the team succeed but the MLSE does not care. As long as there is demand there is no incentive to build a contender.
If this model keeps up then Toronto will be waiting for many more years before they see the cup raised in town again. - darknightapple, on 10/30/2008, -1/+14Toronto is the only team where your better off flying into Ft. Lauderdale for the weekend, getting great tickets for the Leafs vs. Panthers the day of the game, enjoy the sun and beach in a 4 star hotel on A1A ... and still have spent less money than buying 2 great seats for a Saturday night game in Toronto! Ouch.
- Trifold, on 10/30/2008, -0/+10Canada needs more teams. And I'm pretty sure America has plenty to spare (but not the Bruins).
- LordPhoenyx, on 10/30/2008, -1/+11Not Necesarily.
The Maple Leaf is a proper name and the way to pluralize any proper name is to add an 'S'.
Also it is because they are a group wherein each member is a Maple Leaf; used as a proper title. If a family has the last name Leaf, you do not refer to them as the Leaves, you refer to them as the Leafs. - pjf00, on 10/30/2008, -4/+13Let's go Whalers
- StinkyWizlteats, on 10/30/2008, -0/+9Harold Ballard is laughing his ass off in his little bunker in Hades.
I was one year old when the Leafs last won the cup. And yes, I was conflicted like all Leafs fans when Gretzky sliced open Gilmour, didn't get a penalty, and scored the winner to stop a Leafs/Habs Cup in 93.
And to the people who complain about "stupid fans" supporting the failing team, I simply point out that being a sports fan is all about just that. You cheer when they win, you hope when they lose. And there is a lot of pent up hope in Toronto. - alpha19, on 10/30/2008, -1/+9Valuable...
- nicolo, on 10/30/2008, -2/+10well...they do suck. so i wouldn't call it a band wagon, more along the lines of realistic people. No playoffs in 2 years and no cup in 40? Tell me again why they don't suck?
- unknown32, on 10/30/2008, -0/+7Here is something interesting:
What is the difference ? the reset of the teams made the playoffs.
Leafs increased in value by 9 percent and easily were valued ahead of the New York Rangers in Forbes' annual rankings. The Rangers are worth $411 millionBut the biggest increase in value was made by the Pittsburgh Penguins, who made the Stanley Cup finals last spring and boast stars Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin. Pittsburgh is worth $195 million, up a whopping 26 percent.
The next biggest gainers were the Calgary Flames, up 24 percent to $203 million) and the Minnesota Wild, who improved 21 percent and are worth $217 million. - beachsouthpaw, on 10/30/2008, -2/+8You know its bad when a dirt poor baseball team in the same division as the Yankees and Red Sox has a better shot at making the playoffs than the Leafs do......................
Every Saturday night I wonder to myself why the hell I'm still a fan........... - WillyWonka, on 10/30/2008, -0/+5I used to watch the Leafs until the strike. Since then I haven't spent much time thinking about them and haven't been to a game. If the rich babies care more about money then playing hockey then they're not worth my time.
Sucks too because I used to watch them all the time and I still hear stories from my dad when he was at the game the last time the leafs won the cup.
I've been to a couple Marlies games, they're not half bad and $40 for front row seats is nice too. - reaper527, on 10/30/2008, -0/+5"Ominously, 12 teams showed a negative operating income, including the Flyers (minus $1.8 million), and Boston Bruins (minus $3 million)"
looks like my bruins got a mark of shame :( hopefully the fact they made the playoffs last year, (and hopefully will this year) will turn that around. i mean, look at basketball, the celtics became profitable pretty fast - DarkStar3333, on 10/30/2008, -0/+5Not really. The ACC isn't that big of an arena so after the season ticket holders and corporations get there seats there aren't many left. The remnants usually have a pretty good markup on them but its been like this for decades.
Ive lived in Toronto for 3 years and have never made it to a leaf game but Ive been to 4 in Montreal. - kthoma22, on 10/30/2008, -1/+6It's to bad hockey is not more popular. The NHL needs to increase the games popularity. One thing is get a new TV contract on ESPN not OLN. Another is work with NCAA on getting more college hockey games on TV. College hockey is a great way to get people into the game.
- josephbloseph, on 10/30/2008, -0/+5Caps, not bold
- sjps220, on 10/30/2008, -3/+8All these people insulting the devotion of "blind leafs fans" bother me. That's what truly supporting a team is! You support them during their highs and their lows. With the leafs, there are a lot of lows. It angers me, and I get frustrated watching their moves, seeing their lack of motivation but when the season starts, they're my team because they've been my team for years and that means something.
By the way, it's funny how many people say "go Detroit". Just proves my point that many (not all) of the people commenting just kind of float around between teams that are doing well, patting themselves on the back for picking a winner. - RogerStrong, on 10/30/2008, -0/+4"John McCain of the Hockey world"? Does he have the backing of the religious right?
Granted, a Toronto Maple Leafs game IS a lot like a Billy Graham rally: Every few minutes, everyone stands up and yells, "JESUS CHRIST!" - Jeffler, on 10/30/2008, -1/+51. They're the Ducks, they dropped Mighty 3 years ago.
2. That was over a week ago.
3. Leafs have won 3 of their last 4.
4. The Wings are still the Wings, a team amazing beyond comprehension. - nicolo, on 10/30/2008, -0/+4also, im my mind this team will never get better. No matter how bad they are there are the blue and white fans who will blindly follow this team no matter what the situation is. This team hasn't won a cup in over 40 years and they haven't made the playoffs in 2. Yet still every night seems to be sold out so why would all the people making money off this care? The one solution i can see is to stop going to the games and have those people make less money and then they will realize that a team needs to improve to finally end the cup drought or in the short term, the playoff drought!
...But like i said, those fans will blindly follow them and end up saying "maybe next year" at the end of every season - franuzzz, on 10/30/2008, -1/+5Agreed. The ticket prices are by far the worst I have experienced. To top that off each beer I had purchased was $15. The Average ticket holder was holding their blackberry phone in their hands the whole time, and not even watching the game. Now this may be coming from a biased Buffalo Sabres fan, but needless to say I will not be visiting that arena any time soon.
- oxymoron69, on 10/30/2008, -0/+4YEAH STRIPPERS! WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
- nicolo, on 10/30/2008, -0/+4toronto is one of the original 6....little more than 40 yrs!
- PikaPikaChick, on 10/30/2008, -1/+5As a MN Wild fan, this is all sounding veerrrryyy familiar. New this season: "premium" games with higher (!) ticket prices. Go blow yourself, Craig Leipold. Maybe one day we'll pick up some "premium" players who aren't in the 38-45 year old range.
And yet they have sold out every single game since the team's inception. Nothing's going to change anytime soon. - Jeffler, on 10/30/2008, -0/+4hypocrite ;)
- myempyrean, on 10/30/2008, -1/+4The leafs are owned by the retired teachers of Ontario, or something close to that, either way, the reason they don't spend money on the team is because that group of owners only care about making money off of a great franchise, not spending money on facilities and players. which is why they will never be that great until they get rid of them
- starkraving, on 10/30/2008, -0/+3I'd say hockey ticket prices in Canada are higher, more because of supply and demand then just exchange rate. The Canucks (8th on that list btw) have had 218 sell-outs in a row, even with tickets starting at $40 for upper reds. Beer prices in GM Place are about $7.
If your team is in a hockey town then the prices will be higher, regardless of its position above or below the border. - fubarific, on 10/30/2008, -0/+3It's ok, the Leafs won as many playoff games last year as the Sens did.
- BigJuiceMan, on 10/31/2008, -0/+3I STILL to this day, hate Gretzky for that cheap ass play. That was a great series though.
- drunkmuppet, on 10/30/2008, -0/+3Aren't prices always higher in Canada? Ya know, like when you look on the back of a book and there is the US price and the Canadian price. The Canadian one is always higher?
- Jeffler, on 10/30/2008, -1/+4Uhh, the Leafs have been around in the NHL since the NHL began (first as the Arenas, then the St. Pats).
Actually, the team that is lying about 100 Years is the Habs. Its not well known, but the NHA Montreal Canadiens that the team refers to in their history was bought and moved to...Toronto. The NHA folded and became the NHL. By all intensive purposes, the 100 year team is actually the Leafs, and the original Canadiens are the Leafs. Nobody counts this though because they never actually played a game as Toronto. - sgtbutterscotch, on 10/30/2008, -0/+3roomforpanic, how is it a paradox?
- inactive, on 10/30/2008, -0/+3What are you talking about? The leafs are one of the original 6.
- Rikushix, on 10/30/2008, -0/+3http://www.forbes.com/lists/2008/31/nhl08_NHL-Team ...
Here's the full list! - Jeffler, on 10/30/2008, -1/+4I know, I know, I'm just messing around. We can at least buy some good management though, I don't see why we need the John McCain of the Hockey world calling the shots.
- DiggityCarl, on 10/30/2008, -0/+3More games on ESPN, for sure. They should also get NBC to pick up games earlier in the season. It's a crying shame to see ***** like the WNBA or some jackasses playing poker getting more coverage than the NHL. Guess it shows the hockey market is shrinking. I guess most people are just too stupid to understand hockey.
- Braxo, on 10/30/2008, -0/+3Or until they bring in a second team to Toronto. If NYC can support 3 teams in relatively a small area, then Toronto can do two.
Then the teachers will loose revenue and would have to become competitive. - Jeembo, on 10/30/2008, -0/+3I agree. I watched my Wild (who have sold out every game since their inception) play the Thrashers in Atlanta and they had maybe 30% of the seats filled. Places like that should NOT have hockey teams.
- MaxAmillio, on 10/30/2008, -0/+3sens in the finals was the biggest choke i've ever seen.
they didn't even try. i was sooo disappointed . - leafsfanatic, on 10/30/2008, -0/+3Agreed, I saw them in Phoenix and scored 5th row seats behind their bench right from the box office for under $100 each.
- MaxAmillio, on 10/30/2008, -0/+2you've got the perfect recipe for being a sucker.
fool me once......... - Rikushix, on 10/30/2008, -0/+2It's actually a good idea.
Beats adding more expansion teams and simply making the game wider and more spread out. - DiggityCarl, on 10/30/2008, -1/+3Brother, the B's have a LONG way to go to get to where the C's are.
- falser, on 10/30/2008, -0/+2No, actually the problem is they DO try to buy themselves a good team. But they end up overpaying for veteran players that have maybe a year or two left before retirement.
- FearisFailure, on 10/30/2008, -0/+2That's cool I did not know that. Thank you for the history.
