The Worst Hockey Play You Will Ever See
youtube.com — January 4th, 2007. The Stars lead the Oilers 5-4 with about 10 seconds left in third period. The Oilers have their goalie pulled and Dallas forward Patrick Stefan gets a clearcut breakaway from the blueline on an empty net. The rest is now hockey history.

- gahzinia, on 10/12/2007, -4/+118HAHAHA that's horrible! Yeah, there's no excuse to miss that empty net shot, but when Stefan is right outside the goalie crease it looks like the puck hit a bump / cut in the ice and it just jumped over the stick. But you'd think that being a pro hockey player, they'd be able to deal with that. However, when he wakes up the next day, he'll still be getting paid a lot more than me.
"That's the most ridiculous thing I've ever seen. Patrick Stefan, you should be embarrassed for what you just did. That does not belong in the National Hockey League"- MGorgon, on 10/12/2007, -4/+17The Dallas coach probably had a huge bitching session with his team after they all stood still on that empty net play
- mikesty, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10ChickenParm tore him up on that one. The problem wasn't that little bump he hit and the total miss of the goal, it was the fact that he fell on his ass and lost the puck. Yet, he didn't just lose the puck, he flung it back at then. Patrick Stefan musta just had a baaad day.
- rlutterb, on 10/12/2007, -9/+68It's not his fault... if you look closely, you can see the puck hit a bump in the ice and skip over his stick just as he makes the shot attempt. Bad coincidence, poor dude.
Falling down, however... *****, I'd be surprised and fall down too if the puck jumped over my stick. But I'm not a professional hockey player. - wordsthatendini, on 10/12/2007, -10/+19I think this sums it up best....
DO'H! - TaterSalad77, on 10/12/2007, -2/+95Dallas ended up winning the game in the shootout (6-5) in case anybody was wondering.
- treyd, on 10/12/2007, -19/+130That commentator was an ass...
- mendicant, on 10/12/2007, -23/+20Who cares about the stupid bump in the ice.? The fact of the matter is that he walked in like that just to be cocky and he got burned. Any other player would have shot it with all the time they had on a wide open net with no one even close to them.
Still, it was awesome to watch. - Sielencer, on 10/12/2007, -14/+2hahaha they he let it get to him and thats what he gets
- michaelg, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14Yeah, as mentioned, it was retarded but the puck did pop over his stick. I'm a stars fan and was watching the game in disbelief. He should have just shot it instead of being a bit cocky or trying anything weird.
Although, the entire game was just crazy... here are the highlights: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y0OmezV7Isg Watch for Stars goalie getting hit in the head and the goal by Hagman. He had fallen down and still knocked the puck into the net. - soogy, on 10/12/2007, -13/+8Patrik Stefan, oh my. And this guy was picked FIRST overall back in 1999. This is going to go down in history as one of the most embarrassing sports moments of all time.
- multipl3x, on 10/12/2007, -12/+1Yeah that did irritate the hell out of me i had a pro line and was about to win i thought it was for sure win i would of won 230 bones but nope had to go to shoot out and yeah i got screwed over.
- thebusdriver, on 10/12/2007, -11/+4Haha, I'm from Edmonton and had some friends going to this game last night. I'll have to ask them about it lol.
- FinalSolution, on 10/12/2007, -19/+0That's nice, but no one cares.
What a useless comment. - digg-dugg, on 10/12/2007, -12/+5Don Taylor!
- bbhh, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7really... i just feel bad when i see stuff like this. the ice screwed him, i guess he shoulda taken the puck into the corner and just tried to hold onto it, but hindsight is 20/20, i'm sure if that happened to me i would try somehow to score anyways. funny thing is, edmonton has consistently been said to have the best ice in the nhl... no ice is good ice in the last minute of the third though.
- oddball, on 10/12/2007, -11/+3should have shot it from the just inside the blue line instead of being as showboating asshat
- ColinCampbell, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12@oddball:
By carrying the puck in and slowly going to the front of the net, you kill more time. It looks like showboating, but it's actually good clock management.
Nice try though. - broomett, on 10/12/2007, -5/+3oddball...the only "asshat" are peopl that continue to quote movies 7 years tool ate. And people who think that shooting from the blue line when you have a clear path to an empty net is the smart thing to do.
Since you obviously know NOTHING about hockey, pleaes stop talking about it, *****. (Just as stupid as calling someone an assaht. But not nearly as sad as hanging onto an overrated movie for 8 years. - cdahlkvist, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1Not a bump in the ice at all. He hit it against the net post. Seen it on ESPNs "Worst Moments in Sports."
Out of making tons of goals you are apt to screw it up once in a while.
Minnesota Wild FTW (Sorry, shameless plug for my favorite team.) - Rikushix, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2Edmonton still sucks.
- thatsmyaibo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Yeah, the ice in the goalie crease is always messed up from constant side to side sliding/skating from the keeper (especially since all the goalies now a days play butterfly style). Most goalies will always been seen sweeping excess snow to the side of the net to prevent it from happened. I don't blame the guy and kinda feel bad for him. The announcers however, are total douche bags.
- Kyle660, on 10/12/2007, -9/+14This is about as exciting as an arena sport can get, period. Simply amazing.
- onishenko, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Here is a longer version: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dDbEX666G3Y

- Scottish, on 10/12/2007, -11/+6What does it have to do with being in an arena?
- Sifl, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15End of 1st period score: 2-0 Edmonton
End of 2nd period score: 4-2 Edmonton (Dal Goalie gets nailed in the head with puck)
End of 3rd period score: 5-5 Tied! (The above clip)
End of OT: 5-5 Tied (No Stoppage of play)
End of Shoot out: 6-5 Dallas
Awesome! - merreborn, on 10/12/2007, -2/+19"202 views of the video and yet 324 diggs at this point. I guess everyone watches it in groups."
Youtube may delay updating the view count. Not uncommon for sites to do that to reduce database load. - Kyle660, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9 "What does it have to do with being in an arena?"
Well. Hockey is played in an arena. Not trying to be a smartass here but I'm just not sure where you're coming from. - Scottish, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2It sounds like you're implying that sports that aren't played in an arena are more exciting than sports that are. Why else would you qualify it with the word "arena"?
- deepvirus, on 10/12/2007, -11/+5Not as bad as Bill Buckner, but right up there!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9C5-k_2ZvZ4- mlschop, on 10/12/2007, -20/+5this is 100 times worse than bill buckner! Balls go through the legs of infielders all the time. But how does a player in the NHL messup an open netter?!? That's like giving a NFL field goal kicker's practice kicking from the 10 yd. line.
So sad. - deezp1, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9how can it be as bad as bill buckner, Buckner not only did it in a playoff game, he did it in a World Series game. That is not forgivable, not to mention at the time, the redsox were on the verge of winning their 1st world series in about 75 years.
If it was in a playoff game or a stanley cup game then it would be worse because it was a team mess up! - pt4117, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8What are you talking about? This isn't as bad as buckner! Buckner's mistake happened in the world series, and his team lost the game because of it. People turn the puck over everyday too. Missing an open net happens prety frequently too. Granted they both don't happen often, but than again how often did the Sox make the series?
Stefan's mistake was big, but his team still won. - appetite, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11Leave Buckner alone.
- mikesty, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3They still had game 7... LOL.
- osbjmg, on 10/12/2007, -7/+6Well the bad part is that Buckner plays the GAME of baseball, hockey is a sport.
- majglow, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2I know nothing about baseball. What exactly happened in that clip and why was it bad? The guy in the hockey clip obviously screwed up.
- broomett, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2deez and pt4117...the Red Sox were NOT on the verge of winning their first World Series. The game was TIED.
And Mookie Wilson would have beaten the pticher to the bag anyway. So the BEST possible result for the Red Sox on that play would have been first and third, two outs, and a TIE game.
You want to blame someone? Blame the pitcher who not only gave up the tying run with a wild pitch, but was slow to cover first, forcing Buckner to have to hurry to try to field the ball and run to the base. - wilf_brim, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You just had to bring that up, didn't you.
@broomett. There were 2 outs. That would have been the third, and the inning would have been over. - technomom, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Oh please, Buckner was playing on bad knees. Even if he handles the ball cleanly, Wilson still would beat both him and Bob Stanley to the bag and the game is still tied.
The Bosox blew it on relief pitching. Why let Shiraldi and Stanley off the hook?
- mlschop, on 10/12/2007, -20/+5this is 100 times worse than bill buckner! Balls go through the legs of infielders all the time. But how does a player in the NHL messup an open netter?!? That's like giving a NFL field goal kicker's practice kicking from the 10 yd. line.

- PeTeRZz, on 10/12/2007, -15/+69How the hell can you not LOVE hockey.
Anything can happen.
Most exciting sport. PERIOD.- sabarsky, on 10/12/2007, -57/+11"How the hell can you not LOVE hockey. "
Lockout, that's how. - PeTeRZz, on 10/12/2007, -13/+19wtf are you talking about? the NHL has been back moron.
And hockey isn't the only sport thats had a lockout. dumbass. - iigloo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Meh! The NHL lockout was awesome. A lot of star players came to our Swedish hockey league (elitserien). That was great. Well, maybe not for you Americans and Canadians, but still, it was fun. =)
- mhockey14221, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Not to mention the most fun to play :-)
- MaxPayne3476, on 10/12/2007, -5/+0meh I'm down with lacrosse, then Australian football, then hockey at close third.
- SweetMercury, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2"How the hell can you not LOVE hockey.
Anything can happen."
As opposed to other sports, which are governed by strict rules of predictability.
- sabarsky, on 10/12/2007, -57/+11"How the hell can you not LOVE hockey. "
- Supernova36, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15If i wasn't a Stars fan it would be even funnier.
- HoboMaster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7True, but we still won. I just about lost it when that happened though.why he didn't just tap it in from 5 feet out instead of switching to his backhand, I'll never know.
- FinalSolution, on 10/12/2007, -14/+1Dugg down for saying "we"; you aren't a member of the Dallas Stars, so ***** YOU.
- Lososaurus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I'm a Kings fan, I loved every moment of it(Simply because my team is nearly last in the western conference).
- MaxPayne3476, on 10/12/2007, -6/+0FinalSolution THANK YOU
I hate it when my friend goes "Oh man we blew it ["His" team Tennessee Titans] my boy ________ [insert name] threw like *****"
Your not on the team, and ___________ is not your boy.
- hellyes, on 10/12/2007, -18/+6You know there's a video section now, right?
- ImTheDarkcyde, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10kevin needs to add the embedded video player to any youtube url, because this is still clearly hockey, and thus goes in the hockey section
- macaddct1984, on 10/12/2007, -3/+17You know 'Hockey' is a lot more descriptive than 'Video', right?
- hellyes, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2Yes... but there is also a Sports video section. You won't find the 1988 dunk contest in the basketball section because that submission is a video and videos belong in the video section. This is also a video and should not be in the news section when there is a specific section devoted to videos.
- finbec, on 10/12/2007, -5/+6It looked like a freak accident. The puck just hit some ice and jumped over the stick. I think this speaks more to the horrible luck of this player rather than his skill with the stick.
- Price, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3Still... The thing is, he was being cocky and could've easily placed the shot in the open goal. But no, he has to go all the way up and slide it in there like the cool dude he is. OOPS!
- broomett, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1How is skating calmly toward hte net being cocky? Seriously...I would love to hear from someone who obviously NEVER wathes hockey try to explain how that play was cocky.
- ostracize, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@Price
He wasn't cocky. He was cautious. When you have that much distance, you don't want to do something stupid like quickly fire a wrister that sails wide. So he took advantage of his situation and calmly tried to push the puck forward and into the net.
- Nezzy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2and who said there was no such thing as "hockey gods" WOW
- Dave128, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1I agree with finbec. It was just bad luck. you can see him even move the stick to hit the puck in, but the puck hits some ice and bounces up. Not his fault.
- SirNuke, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Puck hitting a rough spot and jumping over your stick is bad luck. Bad luck happens. His mistake was not staying focused and falling over after missing the shot. He clearly still had the puck after missing the shot, what he should have done was skate around the net and take another shot from the other side. Professional hockey players are paid absurd salaries to keep their focus at all times and make adjustments like that, not fall over when something unexpected happens. There really is no excuse.
- ItzComA, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0brilliant!
- steven401, on 10/12/2007, -8/+3BOOM HEADSHOT.
- superskid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14Missing the empty net was one thing. But for Edmonton to actually take it down the ice setup a breakaway and finish it off with only 7 seconds left. Now that is amazing and something that we may never see again.
- SupaDawg, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Oilers still lost. Albeit, still pretty bad miscue by Stefan.
And this guy was a FIRST OVERALL draft pick. lol- oddball, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1o.t. loss is still 1 point....
- onishenko, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1"And this guy was a FIRST OVERALL draft pick. lol"
exactly. cocky and over-confident.
- ButterBuddha, on 10/12/2007, -12/+2Good, Fuk Dallas
- PeTeRZz, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2yeah go ducks!
- JesusIsSatan, on 10/12/2007, -14/+0All of you people have it wrong! It was obvious he didn't want to rub it in the other team's faces and tried to just run out the clock. You can see him pull up! I know that's what he tried to do. Scoring with 5 seconds on the clock on an open net shows no class. Screw sportsmanship. He should've just scored the goal.
- HoboMaster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10When you're only up by one? In hockey? Bull. An empty netter stops the other team from being able to tie. A one goal lead can change in a second, as we saw here.
- ArchieAndrews, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6One goal simply isn't enough in hockey. You need to step on their throat or it can change in an instant.
- finbec, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@Jesus
You weren't watching the same video I was. You clearly see him try to knock the puck into the net as it jumps over his stick.
- castromarx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+19At least the Stars still won. Anyone remember Steve Smith? http://youtube.com/watch?v=DYFePg82pBM
- SupaDawg, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3Who could forget.
THAT is the worst hockey play ever. - ArchieAndrews, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Agreed, I went looking for this one to add to the comments as well. That is easily the worst one ever.
- publishcron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Legendary mustache Lanny. They should have given the goal to Lanny's mustache, not Perry Berezan.
- vanscott, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wow, great find. That is hard to watch. I was a huge Oilers fan growing up in northern Ontario. Now? Not so much! Oil will lose again tonight to the Canucks.
Has it really been a 6 game winning streak? - wilf_brim, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Agreed, I thought that this was the video that was going to be linked. THAT was worse. This was bad luck, poor reactions, poor concentration, good hustle the other way and bad defense. That was just, well, beyond words.
- amplifiedshock, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Vans:
We did lose to the Canucks as you predicted. But it was because of a bad call - again.
- SupaDawg, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3Who could forget.
- mt066, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Oh man that is so embarassing. Imagine the dumbest thing you did all year, except with thousands and thousands of people watching you do it.
- lool, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I switched off the TV thinking that 5-4 would be the final score. I was surprised to see this result posted on Digg.Yeah, the puck bobbled.
- MrZop, on 10/12/2007, -6/+3He should of shot when he got to the hash marks like any normal player would have. But he wanted to be cocky and do a little "slide it in rister shot" from the crease.
Glad he missed, he should of shot ONCE he had an open net, that's what he gets for waiting.- hellyes, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6should have. should have. should have.
- higherness, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1wrist*
- probFake, on 10/12/2007, -16/+2Fake, they don't air hockey on tv.
- spmyke, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Even good players have accidents and make mistakes from time to time.
- jeffwhit, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Ray Ferraro should be embarrassed every time he looks in the mirror.
- Kyle660, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I don't know about classifying this as a choke. I'm a little surprised to see Ray Ferraro (former Thrasher teammate) freak the F out like he did. These freak bounces do happen. I think more credit should go to the Oil for capitalizing on this with 4 seconds left. Thank god for no more red line!
- NoctemSaiyaku, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Yes, it was a mistake made by Stefan but when your playing tired and there is an open net you relax. Trust me anyone no matter how professional would relax a little and what happened is a worst cast scenario. The bump/cut in the ice just ruined his night. I feel for you Stefan.
- admirabumblebee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Yeah, but if he missed that shot everyone would be saying he should have just skated up and tapped it in.
The guy got very very unlucky no matter which way you try to spin it- Opelious, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If he missed, then people would be harping on him because he can't shoot. If you're that close to the net, and you can't fire at it when its wide open, then you're in the wrong sport.
- Tadiera, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Reason #182 why I'll never be a celebrity or anyone who's job is broadcasted to millions.
Because if I ***** up at work? Maybe half a dozen people will know and they'll forget within a week.
Him? Well... decades from now, people will be snickering about that. - Smigge87, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2good grief, Stefan needs to make like a hockey player and get the puck outa there.
- idiggeverything, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Oh god.
- briankeith, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2" wtf are you talking about? the NHL has been back moron.
And hockey isn't the only sport thats had a lockout. dumbass. "
I think he was saying the lockout made him like it less due to the fact that of the reality of the business. Also, he never claimed to like any other sport post-lock out. Just because someone doesn't share your passion doesn't make them a "dumbass". - borderwall, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I ruptured my spleen, my lower colon exploded and then my intestines developed some sort of spasm... basically coach - I just ***** up.
COACH: "WE, are catching the bus. You... " - dave98, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14actually.. this should be the worst hockey play you will ever see
http://youtube.com/watch?v=OlFVOWnZz3Q- merreborn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1lol. That's pretty much the only thing you worse than missing a shot on an open net.
But then again... since when does Japan have a hockey team? - afx114, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yeah, and a couple weeks ago Yutaka Fukufuji suited up as the backup goaltender for the Los Angeles Kings. Although he didn't take the ice, he is the first Japanese player ever to "play" in an NHL game.
http://fans.nhl.com/nhl_groups/Los_Angeles_Kings_Official_Group/
It was a weird twist of luck for him, because he's actually the backup to the backup of LA's minor league team the Manchester Monarchs. He usually plays on their double-A team in the ECHL.
- merreborn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1lol. That's pretty much the only thing you worse than missing a shot on an open net.
- briankealer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Ah, I feel sorry for him. I've been playing for 16 years and ***** like that does happen.
- ahughes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Saw this today on TSN. Someone must really feel stupid.
- Caboose2, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2You know, at first I thought "Oh, another hockey clip. Meh." I watched that, and my jaw just hung open. Shame will forever be his. No, seriously, you can't make up for that.

- daggart, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Your title ain't that great. It should say, "The Worst and Best plays in NHL History!". GO OILERS!
- eatupmartha, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I thought the worst play in hockey history involved Clint Malarchuk. If you don't know who that is or what that play was, Wikipedia has a (thankfully) non-visual description.
Inspiring story though. - joltjake, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1wow, sucks to be him
- jmack111, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1JACKASS!!!!!
- Halifax1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Happy Gilmore would just try to stab them with his skate.
- litlem17, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3brodeur scored on himself in a stanley cup finals game when trying to stop a simple dump in.
it happens, treyd was right though, the commentator was an ass.
http://youtube.com/watch?v=iXEzD1heawU - Jerky1312, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1He could have shot the puck into the empty net easily, I don't know why he thought he had to "handle" to the puck into the net. It wasn't really his fault, the puck did skip on the ice surface, but all he had to do was shoot the puck in and there would have been no chance of the puck skipping. They are lucky they went on to win. The play reminded me of that football player who was jogging into the endzone and Don Beebee of the Bills smacked the ball out of his hand right before he entered the endzone.
- SPARTACVS, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I bet this guy wouldn't get nearly as much flak in the future if that Oiler hadn't completely showed him up at the other end by actually scoring on a breakaway on the ACTUAL Dallas goalie directly because of his ***** up. It was a horrible, idiotic mistake, but it just made Stoll's lead pass, Sykora's tip, and Smyth's second pass under pressure to set up Hemsky's flying goal that much more incredible.
- etx313, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13We need more hockey posts on digg. I'm being serious.
- Kyle660, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Couldn't agree more.
- lansuggs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Third that!
- thurows, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3Somebody call the Donald, "You're Fired."
- ryanshepherd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If he had shot the puck from the blue line and missed, everyone would have said "Why didn't he carry it in closer?! There was no one close, he didn't need to shoot!".
He carried the puck in because no one was around, and it seemed like the safe bet. That's not hot-dogging.
Had he stopped at the point and took a big fancy slap shot, THAT would have been hot-dogging it.
He took the safe road, and it burned him.
We'll see that one over and over for years. - papereira, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Wow! What a brainfart!! lmao
- rocketpop, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Anyone remember when Marc Bergevin (Blues) grabbed the puck and threw it into his own net vs. the Sharks during the playoffs in... what, 1999 or 2000?
- magus91, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1What's worse is he score the first goal of the game with the goalie in the net. Looks like another case of the 'invisible wall' from NHL 94
- jaredvolkl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If you watch it was more of a fluke than anything. He took the puck into the crease and the ice was rough from the goalie. It looks like it hits a divit and flips over his stick, but his falling down was his fault. And the goal, well that was just pure skill. Melrose said it best on Sportscenter this morning, "If this was the playoffs this would be legendary." You gotta respect the mullet.
