- gregdogum, on 11/25/2009, -0/+42dugg for hockey.
- jgopp, on 11/25/2009, -2/+37Lidstrom is one of the best players of all time, not just this decade.
- Yahn, on 11/25/2009, -2/+21Steve Yzerman anyone?
Played a round of golf with Scott niedermayer once..... Nice guy - capthowdy1027, on 11/25/2009, -1/+20Dugg for the simple fact that Crosby was not number one. That and it's an article about hockey.
- toadshortage, on 11/25/2009, -0/+16Love the picture of Brodeur.
- DanS29, on 11/25/2009, -0/+10Sakic should be higher than 8th...
- jmferris, on 11/25/2009, -1/+10In Soviet Russia, world ***** *you*.
- fearthefin, on 11/25/2009, -0/+9Nearly perfect list-- I wouldn't have Ovy and Crosby so high due to the length of their careers (probably slotting them at 9 and 8 respectively), but other than that this is flawless.
- DanS29, on 11/25/2009, -0/+7Forsberg would have been on that list...if his ankles held up.
- toadshortage, on 11/25/2009, -0/+7I am a Forsberg fanboy. I will be the first to admit it. I think he is an amazing player, I love watching him, but its pretty clear to see why hes not on this list.
Durability. The last 5 years he has been plagued with groin and foot injuries that limited him to a fraction of his former self. He hasn't played over 60 games since 02-03.
Sportsmanship. The guy would take a dive whenever he felt contact, I'm surprised he never accidentally tried to draw a trip form his own teammate. (Maybe he has, I just haven't seen it) - str1fe, on 11/25/2009, -0/+7I can't argue against Lidstrom and Brodeur topping the list, they certainly define their respective positions. Each has accomplished so much for their respective teams and will be first ballot Hall of Famers no doubt. Is Lidstrom the best defenseman of all time or was Bobby Orr? This debate will go on forever until the argument becomes "Was the best defenseman of all time Lidstrom, Orr or [the next guy to come along, I'm predicting Hedman]?"
Ovechkin is certainly a no-brainer for #3, and when the "best NHLers of this decade" article is written in 2019, I expect him to top it. People will definitely be arguing that #4, Crosby, should be higher than Ovechkin because of the recent Stanley Cup victory, but I personally believe Ovechkin is the better individual player. He's probably the best player in the league right now, but I won't get into that argument.
Pronger? Meh. I hate the guy, but he's undeniably a great player. I won't argue against him or Neidermayer making the list where they are at all, they're two of the best defensemen in the game. Iginla's a great choice for #7 as well, he's the definition of a leadership figure and is a very lethal offensive force, probably the best power forward in the game. Iginla or Neidermayer will be chosen to captain Team Canada in the Olympics. Sorry, Crosby fans, but let him get some more big-time international experience under his belt first.
Joe Sakic most definitely deserves to make this list. He and Yzerman share the misfortune of this decade being the twilight of their careers, otherwise both would have placed higher (and Stevie would have actually made the list). Speaking of Yzerman, I disagree with him being excluded in favor of #9, Joe Thornton. Sure, Jumbo Joe had that one season where he won all those trophies, but what else has he actually *done*? He's having amazing chemistry with Heatley this year, and I'm having lots of fun watching how the Sharks are turning out, but I still don't think he's a top 10 of the decade.
Jaromir Jagr I can agree with, though I think he should have taken Thornton's place at #9, with Yzerman taking #10. I will admit some degree of bias though, being a fan of Detroit. But that's just me disagreeing with Greg Wyshynski. I guess I can't complain too much, he's a very good player, I just think his lack of major accomplishments warrants exclusion. - nitzua, on 11/25/2009, -1/+7'NO BODY, and I mean NOBODY could take him off his Puck'
except his complete inability to stay healthy. - PinkFloyd65, on 11/25/2009, -0/+6Yzerman played 4 seasons in the NHL after the year 2000, never reaching higher than 51 points in each season. Yeah he won the cup and scored 23 points in the playoffs in 2002 (On one leg too), but he was at the end of his career; no where near the 150+ point force he once was.
If anyone is missing from this list it's Peter Forsberg. He is one of the most dominate players of all time, not just this decade. - str1fe, on 11/25/2009, -0/+5Whoa, I made this post and realized it was long as hell, so I'll stick it in a reply so it doesn't clog up the main comments page.
Also, dugg for hockey. - mcprogrammer, on 11/25/2009, -0/+5I was about to digg you up until I got to your second sentence. How many cups have the Avs won?
- toadshortage, on 11/25/2009, -0/+5Anyone that doesn't believe this, take a look at Alex Tanguay's stats when he isn't on Forsberg's line.
- cobalt8888, on 11/25/2009, -0/+4I was about to be upset until I got to #1. I was afraid they were going to leave Lidstrom off the list.
- Lifehedge, on 11/25/2009, -2/+6Forsberg is one of the best players ever. Problem is that he got that foot whatever-it-is-injury. But if even can play just a few minutes in a game he can change everything.
- Brak710101, on 11/25/2009, -5/+9Personally, I'd put Brodeur ahead of Lidstrom. Lidstrom is a great player, but I think Brodeur is better at carrying a team pretty much by himself, and that's really hard to do in a sport like hockey, especially when being the goalie.
- densetsu23, on 11/25/2009, -0/+4Moving long comments into a reply? Let me guess -- you're also a guy who does the courtesy flush in a public bathroom every time you drop a log? :P
- nitzua, on 11/26/2009, -0/+4I'm a Wings fan too. There were indeed injuries across the board that weren't really discussed at all. I'd heard of the ones you mentioned, as well as Lidstrom playing through pain somewhere for at least the last two rounds. Then again, what kind of luck do you expect them to have lol? Pittsburgh played with 6 men for 20+ seconds in game 6 and the announcers LAUGHED about it. Kinda gives a general indication of who the league wanted to see win.
- blankoblanko, on 11/25/2009, -6/+9Peter Forsberg. He makes the whole team better.
- Switch07, on 11/27/2009, -0/+3True hockey fans? Maybe.
True Wings fans? Please. - fakeplasticsnow, on 11/27/2009, -0/+3I'm a Penguins fan, and I really don't think Crosby should have been top 5. He is a great player, but he can only perform well with other good players around him. Just this month, both Malkin and Gonchar were injured, and the Pens lost 5 of 6 games, despite Crosby getting significant ice time. When Crosby was injured a few years ago, Malkin led the team in his absence.
- VanSoaked, on 11/25/2009, -1/+4Dugg for Iggy.
- toadshortage, on 11/25/2009, -0/+3Foppa has laid out many a victims much harder than that and maintained control of the puck. No one hits with the puck like Forsberg.
- stuffradio, on 11/25/2009, -0/+3Haha, Canucks hammered the Avs last two times they played them!
- nitzua, on 11/25/2009, -0/+3That series could have easily gone either way. The Penguins also barely made the playoffs and didn't have to tackle the top team in the conference on their way to the Finals (Boston). The effort that Carolina gave against them in the conference finals was lame at best.
My main gripe with him being on the list (sans Cup) is that he's only been playing for less than half of the decade. Same goes for Ovechkin. - alrightwtf, on 11/25/2009, -1/+3for some reason this sorta thing always reminds me of NHL Hitz 2002 i think i was.. all i hear is "FORSBURG! forsburg... forsburg! FORSBERG! X2F01! 101011!
- Yahn, on 11/25/2009, -0/+2Considering the sharks are complete flops in the post season....
Scott Stevens deserves more credit than him even..... - therealspike, on 11/25/2009, -6/+8Teemu Selanne is a big miss in the list. Regularity for years... Stanley cup winner....
- Jbruster, on 11/25/2009, -0/+2Thornton does not deserve to be on the list, I can think of so many more players that deserve to be on it, i mean at the end of the day the greatest hockey players are the ones who play well in the playoffs, and it makes no sense that one of the greatest hockey players of our generation in Yzerman is not on that list.
- mcprogrammer, on 11/25/2009, -0/+2I'm a Red Wings fan, so I'm biased, but I think if the Red Wings were healthy they would have won it easily. Datsyuk had a bruised foot bone (Detroit did win the two games he was out, but he wasn't fully recovered when he came back; you could definitely see it in the first couple games). Hossa apparently had a bad shoulder, etc. If those two were at the top of their game, it wouldn't have been as close as it was.
- fearthefin, on 11/25/2009, -0/+2Yzerman's career during the 00's was relatively unspectacular to his previous accomplishments (as well as the accomplishments of those on this list)-- I'm not sure he belongs here.
The 90's are a completely different story obviously, and I'm sure he's on that list. One of the greatest Captains ever to play the game. - Gregus1032, on 11/25/2009, -0/+2I agree. They are amazing players, but still so young for a "decade" list. There are plenty of other great Veterens out there.
- NozE8, on 11/25/2009, -0/+2As much as I love Linden, for what he did on and off the ice, I recognize that he isn't in the top 10.
- bouja, on 11/25/2009, -0/+1How can you luckily win the cup? It fell on your lap? I think the Stanley cup is one of the hardest cup to win. You have to win 4 series of best of 7. That's playing a minimum of 16 extra games up to 28 games. That's like a quarter of a season more.
- mcprogrammer, on 11/25/2009, -0/+1That was supposed to be rhetorical, but yeah, it's two (even including the Nordiques years).
- mcprogrammer, on 11/26/2009, -0/+1Yeah, Lidstrom had testicle surgery during game 4 (?) against the Blackhawks.
- aychseven, on 11/25/2009, -1/+2I'm no Forsberg fanboy, but I'd definitely rather see him on this list than Cindy Crosby. No player with less than 300 games should be on this list. I'd even go as far as to push Ovie and anyone else under 500 off of a decade's best list.
- LordByr0n, on 11/26/2009, -0/+1Neither one should be on the list. They are both good players but one would think that in order to qualify for a "best of the decade" list you should have played for at least half the decade.
- toadshortage, on 11/25/2009, -0/+1Two.
- NozE8, on 11/25/2009, -0/+1The reasons Yzerman should be on this list are the same reasons Thornton shouldn't be. Yzerman is considered the best 2 way forward ever. He is also one of the best captains of all time and his teams were consistently good regular and post season.
All that being said, in the twilight of his career, he won a third Stanely Cup and an Olympic Gold Medal on one freaking leg.
Sure there is still time for Thornton to take that next big step but for this time frame Yzerman is better than Thornton. - pvmmcgee, on 11/25/2009, -0/+1I'm sorry but of all the players mentioned so far for having been left off the list, Chris Drury is the least deserving. Not sure if he'd crack my top 50 for the decade.
- StinkyTool, on 11/25/2009, -3/+4Dugg for Detroit fans cheering as Crosby raises the cup. True hockey fans.
- jhuik, on 12/12/2009, -0/+1You can give the edge to Ovie over Crosby. Crosby is two years younger so his having dominated slightly less so ought to be seen in light of the fact that Ovie arrived in the league as a man, not a teenager. History will very likely crown Crosby the better player. But for now AO is more dominant.
- crowbar77, on 11/25/2009, -0/+1No malkin? Crosby's awesome, but the last couple years Malkin's been the better player.
- Joomal, on 11/26/2009, -0/+1my point exactly. Sundin was amazing even when the odds were against him. And he never complained about it.
- copaceticZ, on 11/25/2009, -0/+1Rod Brind'amour 440 points. Two Stanley Cup Finals. One Eastern Conference Finals. Face-off champion. Changed the work-out strategies of every single team in the league. Now, I'm a southerner I don't know enough about hockey to really make a good argument for his inclusion. I just know he belongs here.
