It's cool to see him stay with the Wings even after his retirement. Truly a great captain.- phatvolvo, on 10/12/2007, -16/+4I guess you could say he's "earned his wings"?
- jatlasb, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2 That's just sick, man. Anyways, that pun should have been made 20 years ago.
- Nightfall, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Just where Stevie belongs! There is no better place for the captain to be than with the Red Wings.
- alxdman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1a Red Wing forever!
awsome to see him stay in the hockey scene
- stuckinafridge, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10If you ask me, he'll always be the captain of the Wings. Heck, he's the only one i've ever known.
- cds0528, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4He's been captain longer than I've been alive, so I second that...
- Snake_Man, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5GO WINGS
He is The Man, his presence on the ice will be sorely missed, but it's good to know he'll still be around at the Joe. - mecole21, on 10/12/2007, -16/+1The real Red Wings play baseball...

- BigBaRay, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Being a Stars fan I have often times hoped for a leader such as Stevie Y to arrive in Dallas. We have had our leaders, Hatcher, Modano, Zubov, etc while they are/where good players none have surfaced with the leadership abilities of Stevie Y. Now that he has retired I can say "Go Wings" but this is null and void Oct 4.
- pogfreak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Thank you for not including Hull in that list. As a wings fan currently living in Dallas it drives me up the wall to see stars fans who still think the world of him. Hes probably the only player that I still hated even when he was on the wings.
- diecastbeatdown, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5great player, glad he will still be a part of the wings.
- snyd0884, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Wow - great news for Red Wings fans. Here's hoping he can provide the same quiet leadership by example from the front office as he did from the ice. (Let's hope it goes better than it did with Trammell! Although it's definitely a different situation...)
- marmoset, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Hopefully the results will be similar to those of Joe Dumars with the Pistons -- look at how great a job he's done with that front office job.
- go123, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I think it's a real testament to how important he's been for the Wings that his No. 19 jersey will be retired on Jan 2nd and hoisted up alongside other great legends' jerseys...
Stevie Y is the reason I got into NHL and supported the Wings in the first place - he'll always have a special place in the history of the entire NHL, let alone the Wings themselves... - jatlasb, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1I just hope he doesn't become the next Garth Snow.
- jatlasb, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Don't get me wrong: I'm from detroit, love the wings with all my heart and soul, and Stevie Y may be the epitome of what a hockey hero is. Skill, talent, leadership, and class.
I just want him to be involved, not a figurehead. - bmorrow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Or Bobby Clarke
- jatlasb, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Don't get me wrong: I'm from detroit, love the wings with all my heart and soul, and Stevie Y may be the epitome of what a hockey hero is. Skill, talent, leadership, and class.
- alphaone, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Anyone with enough spirit to play in the playoffs (quite well too) with a broken leg is going to be a great VP in the NHL. Best captain ever, future best VP ever.
- Zaxx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The leg was not broken, the knee was damaged.
- mecole21, on 10/12/2007, -8/+1Go Sabres! I mean Buffaloslugs!
- Kodiak41226, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13Stevie Y is something we might never see in sports ever again. Think about it the man was drafted by Detriot, and played with the same team his entire career, even taking pay cuts along the way to help the team stay under the salary cap. Honestly, that kind of loyalty and non-selfishness does not exists in sports these days. Their should be a statue made of the man.
- anonymou38, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3agreed. yzerman is one of the greatest captains in the history of the nhl. i doubt we'll see anyone of his captaincy calibre (or mario lemieux's... speaking of great captains sacrificing for the team) for quite some time.
- warox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I agree we will be hard pressed to see another Stevie Y type legend again across all sports. The ever-increasing business methods applied to sports, free agency, win-at-all-costs mentality, and the salary cap will keep parity- and therefore skilled player turnover - high, reducing the likelihood of spending an entire career with one team. Further, awarding captaincy to such a young player (what was he, 2nd year, 21 yrs old or something) is unheard in and of itself, which only amplifies the rarity. His versatility, skill, and selflessness for his team - going from 3rd best points season all time to best defensive forward - further adds to the legend that is Stevie Y.
Yzerman is one for the generations. I'm pleased to see he remains a part of the Wings.
- DFrag, on 10/12/2007, -20/+1Amazing! This is GREAT news!! One thing though, Who the ***** is Steve Yzerman? That's a made up last name, isn't it?
- WingedWheeler, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2A Great move on the Wings part!!! GO WINGS!!!
- Mark_DeRidder, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This is great news! I'm very happy to see that Yzerman will continue to play a role with the Wings. I'm hoping for another great season, and praying for a decent post-season... it's been a while.
- Jaheab, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I didn't realize there were this many hockey fans on digg let alone Wings fans.Stevie was already a Wing for life. I'm just glad they made it official.
- tombomb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I have lived in Michigan all my life, and trust me, anywhere in Michigan, Stevie Y is not a mere mortal, he is a god
- strikerK, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2#19 is forever. He will always be my captain.
Hats off to the greatest player, nay, Hero of all time - crapple, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Just where Stevie Y belongs. I'm sooo happy about this. At least one of our pro teams can manage to continuously make wise decisions!!
- afbase, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1STEVIE!!! STEVIE!!! STEVIE!!!
Just when you thought the wonder years were over. He's given so much to that team, its like he's a father loving his kids.
Long live the glory.... and the Russian 5. I where number 16 with honor in the name Igor!!! :-) - narkee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1He makes me proud to be Canadian. All class.
- MysticSavage, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Stevie Y for Commissioner.
- spyd3rweb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1anyone but that bettman *****. he has ruined hockey.
- LeetPCUser, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If it had to be any team I would have definately picked Detroit.
- Screwy1138, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Considering team loyalty, city loyalty, overall role-model capability, attitude, sportsmanship, and skill, Steve Yzerman is one of the greatest athletes ever.
- EnsErmac, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I don't think a single person can argue any one of those points. In the age of flashy athletes, Stevie Y was a class act.
