- grunion, on 04/14/2008, -0/+3Seems kind of childish, but there are worse ideas than taunting Marty... if you're wearing enough pads and willing to pay the price. I think waving the stick like that is begging for a play stoppage or 2 minute minor though - a high shot and you just played the puck forward with a high stick, and if you should make contact with just about anyone, you've just slashed. Ultimately, it's a job for the enforcers rather than the refs. Act like an idiot and you'll eventually be made to pay the price.
What Avery did was make himself a marked man, which of course is one way to change your opponents' focus. - litlem17, on 04/14/2008, -0/+1from this insightful blog post: "Heh, this was surprisingly awesome. Is it legal? ... the refs didn’t think so ..."
but it looks like the folks running the nhl didn't find this type of play "surprisingly awesome".
from NHL.com top stories:
"Monday, the League made sure it would not happen again as Senior Executive Vice President and Director of Hockey Operations Colin Campbell issued a statement about the League’s position.
It is considered an interpretation of Rule 75, concerning goaltender interference.
"An unsportsmanlike conduct minor penalty (Rule 75) will be interpreted and applied, effective immediately, to a situation when an offensive player positions himself facing the opposition goaltender and engages in actions such as waving his arms or stick in front of the goaltender's face, for the purpose of improperly interfering with and/or distracting the goaltender as opposed to positioning himself to try to make a play.""
