My thoughts go out to Zednik.- sgtbutterscotch, on 02/11/2008, -1/+31I meant on the video. And I hope he heals as well.
- jattea, on 02/11/2008, -0/+22On the widescreen HD feed (Channel 700 in Buffalo), you can actually see blood gush for a moment before the camera pans to the right. On freezeframe I caught a couple of frames of it. Pretty gross.
- RedS0x, on 02/11/2008, -2/+29You are one sick person. :D
"That person almost died!" (TiVo rewinding sounds)- razrielle, on 02/11/2008, -1/+16TiVo makes a sound when it rewinds?

It makes a popping sound with each faster rewind setting, For example, 2x(pop-pop!), 4x (pop-pop!) - GawtMilk, on 02/11/2008, -2/+3Yeah, just watch a Simpsons episode. They've used the noise in like three episodes from seasons eighteen and nineteen.

Hockey players are awesome. - absentmindedjwc, on 02/11/2008, -1/+6We must ask ourselves: What would Brian Boitano do?

I sure hope that guy is talking about another hockey injury :|- LloydBentsen, on 02/11/2008, -0/+4Maybe Patrick Bateman was doing the commentary.
- ligyron, on 02/11/2008, -0/+1Something similar happened a while back, and the video clearly shows lots of blood gushing out of his neck. That's probably what the guy is referring to
- mortigon, on 02/11/2008, -0/+2It happened to Clint Malarchuk, a former Sabres goaltender, in Buffalo in 1989. Both very scary incidents...
Edit: nvm... i see equallyunequal already told ya... - iancorey, on 02/11/2008, -0/+4It sounded like he was recalling the time he had to dismember a prostitute.
- equallyunequal, on 02/11/2008, -0/+10He was talking about back in '89 when a Sabre goalie (Clint Malarchuk) got his jugular sliced by a skate.
- drakenlot, on 02/11/2008, -3/+1It was it Carotid artery. Close, but there is a difference. If it was his jugular, he prolly would've died right there on the ice.
- mortigon, on 02/11/2008, -0/+3From Wikipedia:
"On March 22, 1989, during a game between the St. Louis Blues and Buffalo Sabres at Memorial Auditorium in Buffalo, goaltender Clint Malarchuk of the Sabres severed his jugular vein"
take it for what it's worth...
I'd also like to add this... because it's pretty crazy:
"Malarchuk, meanwhile, had only two thoughts: He was going to die, and he had to do it the right way. "All I wanted to do was get off the ice", said Malarchuk. "My mother was watching the game on TV, and I didn't want her to see me die."["

- TheTaoOfBill, on 02/11/2008, -0/+2This is exactly why I've always been terrified of ice skates.
- thatsmyaibo, on 02/12/2008, -0/+2As a hockey player, this is really scary to watch. It's one thing to see an injury but when that injury takes place during an activity you're part of, it hits closer to home. The news reports said he lost 5 units of blood. He is already asking when he can start playing again. I hope he makes a fast recovery.
- sgtbutterscotch, on 02/11/2008, -4/+118Can barely see any of it...
- gregdogum, on 02/11/2008, -0/+119There was so much blood on the ice that they had to get the Zamboni out again. Really scary, but the good news is he's doing better.
- ekin09, on 02/11/2008, -3/+3You are taught to wear neck guards as a kid, why NHLers don't bother to wear them is beyond me..
- Cannon49, on 02/11/2008, -0/+4Because they're uncomfortable and only protect against things that have a one in a million chance of happening.
- pp7k, on 02/11/2008, -0/+2Same reason none of them wear full face protection. Until it's mandated for all, they won't.
Look at Mats Sundin; his eye is permanently messed up from a puck in the face, and he still doesn't even wear a visor.

Good to hear. - da_bradler, on 02/11/2008, -0/+1These type of injuries are horrible to see, but luckily the medical personal at hockey games all know how to treat these type of things and with such a quick response the chance of death or long term injury is low.
But still I can't imagine anything more scary for a player then to get your neck cut, apparently it barely hurts which almost would make it worse because you would be so aware of exactly what is happening. - thatsmyaibo, on 02/12/2008, -0/+1He already asked his doctor if he could play soon. I give credit to him just for getting up and skating to the bench. It is not often when the cancellation of a game is discussed. I wish him a quick recovery.

What a shame for Zednik. He's scored six goals or so over the past five games, yet *that* is his national coverage.- Arcesius, on 02/11/2008, -0/+4No one here in Buffalo wanted to see a guy die on the ice. I'm sure that's a pretty universal sentiment (except for maybe in Toronto =P).

article on nhl.com - fatloui, on 02/11/2008, -2/+65I'm buying a neck guard. As a goalie, someone jammed their stick into my neck a couple weeks ago when I was trying to cover up the puck, can't imagine if it was a skate :(
- Kronos6948, on 02/11/2008, -0/+8Look up Clint Malarchuk on YouTube. You'll see the horrifying effects. I wore a neck protector (the one Patrick Roy used to wear) when I used to play for that reason...
- grakker, on 02/11/2008, -0/+3I was in my first year of college (uni for you UKers) when that happened. I didn't care about much during that time. Drinking, getting laid as much as possible, trying to at least show up to class. But watching that on TV has freaked me out to this day. I won't even click on the link for the latest because of that.
- colto, on 02/11/2008, -0/+4Here is a link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dT4PenDwiPo
You do see the blood gushing out of his neck so consider yourself warned if you don't like seeing blood.
edit: oops look like tempz already posted the link before me below.- strangewill, on 02/11/2008, -0/+1I'm assuming he also made it out alive?
Horrible, but much easier to watch when they say "Like watching your kid die" and such, as in he did make it.- adraft, on 02/11/2008, -0/+3Haha, Malarchuck himself is interviewed in that video.
- strangewill, on 02/12/2008, -0/+1Wow I need to be smacked for that one.
I just remember everyone saying "he" and no "I"s.
- strangewill, on 02/11/2008, -0/+1I'm assuming he also made it out alive?
- azimuthal, on 02/11/2008, -0/+4You need 2 neckguards as a goalie, get the dangly ugly plastic thing to protect yourself from throat trauma and your clavicle, and a skate proof choker(everyone should wear one of these). When you put your head down you open up the side and back of your neck to skates and sticks.
The combo neck/clavicle guard is good for your chest, but imo doesn't cover the neck from skates enough. I wore one of these too. Yes that's 3 neckguards, but the weight is negligible compared to the rest of your gear.
On the plus side of being a goalie, there's much lower chance of a spinal cord injury compared to all those benchwarmers you play with.- noseeme, on 02/11/2008, -0/+1I'm sure he has the dangly plastic thing, those come with goalie helmets, which I'm sure he wears also. :)
- fatloui, on 02/11/2008, -0/+1I have the plastic neck guard, actually didn't wear it for a while (they don't come with the helmets) but got hit in the neck with a puck once and couldn't talk for a few hours. But even with it, as I said, I got stuck pretty hard directly in the neck with a stick, so I'm buying one of the chokers.
- ggacid, on 02/11/2008, -0/+4What in the world are you doing playing goalie without a neck guard!?!?!?!?! WTF..
- Cannon49, on 02/11/2008, -0/+1I couldn't imagine playing goalie without a plastic neck guard. The one time I took it off for practice I got a puck right where my neck and chest meet. Hurt like a bitch. Needless to say I wear it everytime now.
- Kronos6948, on 02/11/2008, -0/+8Look up Clint Malarchuk on YouTube. You'll see the horrifying effects. I wore a neck protector (the one Patrick Roy used to wear) when I used to play for that reason...
- mikemc620, on 02/11/2008, -6/+112i'm surprised that stuff like this doesn't happen more often
- Capskid8, on 02/11/2008, -0/+2it happens to legs and arms often, just necks are more shocking
- ostracize, on 02/11/2008, -0/+7Skate blades don't go up that high all that often. Sticks to the face happen daily though.
- opiniastrous, on 02/11/2008, -0/+5Yeah. Ice Hockey scares the ***** out of me.
Razor sharp blades flying around at breakneck pace in a contact sport...- IndigoMoss, on 02/11/2008, -0/+7Ice Hockey definitely isn't a pussy's sport. Not only do you have the Razor Sharp blades, but you also have solid rubber pucks going at extremely fast speeds and sticks getting smacked around everywhere while trying to get said puck traveling at crazy speeds, while the other guy is trying to do the same.
- yohnstoppable, on 02/11/2008, -0/+6"Ice Hockey definitely isn't a pussy's sport."
I've always asked myself why I never gave hockey a shot. I think this explains it perfectly - thatsmyaibo, on 02/12/2008, -0/+1I cut myself on my skate just from cleaning the ice off after a game. I couldn't imagine that to the neck. And not only are the pucks hard rubber, they are frozen too. Don't forget they put those nets up behind the goals because a spectator died from a stray puck.
- EnsErmac, on 02/15/2008, -0/+1That girl that died from Espen Knutsen's shot was a REALLY freak accident. There was an article about it in Sports Illustrated awhile back, it was something like a 3,000,000 to 1 chance that all of the circumstances lined up for it to happen. That being said, I still am in favor of the nets, even if the Penguins Prize Patrol can't shoot T-shirts at me now...
- yohnstoppable, on 02/11/2008, -0/+6"Ice Hockey definitely isn't a pussy's sport."

- MacSuxWindozSux, on 02/11/2008, -0/+1Wearing lots of gear like they do now is fairly recent. In the good 'ole days they didn't even wear helmets.
I think this sort of thing is extremely rare, but because there's more gear, people hit each other harder, and that has increased injuries in some cases.- thatsmyaibo, on 02/12/2008, -0/+1True, but the game was less physical and was more finesse over power. Slapshots and checking wasn't as common. With the speed of the game getting faster, I'm still surprised visors aren't mandatory.
- Myztry, on 02/11/2008, -0/+2I managed to land both skates across my fingers with my full body weight when I was a teen. It was excruciating and I half expected to see my fingers laying on the ice. Thankfully the blades are dual edged with a near flat center and barely broke the skin.
Probably not that unusual, except it was at a rink in a rural city in Australia. There is only a few rinks left in the whole of Australia (not the coldest of places) which is a shame because Ice Hockey was a sport I could really get into. - Stay521, on 02/11/2008, -0/+2It's more common in pairs figure skating actually. They skate so close together that one little slip up can cause unfortunate results. Pairs skater Oleg Shliakov accidentally stabbed his (former) partner, Elena Berezhnaya, in the head with his skate.
From Berezhnaya's wiki entry:
"In January 1996, Berezhnaya was seriously injured when Shliakov's blade sliced into her skull while the pair were practicing a side-by-side camel spin.[1] Following the accident, which required two surgical operations to remove bone fragments from her brain, Berezhnaya briefly lost the ability to speak."
- mmcgrath20, on 02/11/2008, -1/+74The exact same thing happened to Clint Malarchuk almost 19 years ago, and is the reason why goalie's wear neck protection now. Maybe the same thing needs to happen to all other players on the ice... thinking of you Zednik. Hope you are ok.
- tempz, on 02/11/2008, -0/+75Unfortunately the Malarchuk incident never had the same censoring by the media as Zednik has had.

Warning, this is an unedited version and it is very gruesome. So, don't like blood... don't click. - Braxo, on 02/11/2008, -0/+3Also happened in Buffalo...
- Cannon49, on 02/11/2008, -0/+1Me thinks it's something in the water.
- EclipseGSX, on 02/11/2008, -0/+22Clint was very lucky to have the medical technician that Buffalo had. He was a field medic in Vietnam, and was trained in treating extreme injuries like severed arteries. He basically shoved his fingers into the wound to stop the bleeding until they could get him to a surgeon.
- tempz, on 02/11/2008, -0/+22In the video he totally gives off the exact image you describe...watch how he kneels in the pool of blood and gets right in there...the guy is a hero.
- Vodka2389, on 02/11/2008, -0/+14Malarchuk said that he hurried to get off the ice because his mom was watching and he didn't want her to see him die.
- DMRsweden, on 02/11/2008, -0/+1omg. i didnt think i was that blood scared .... or whatever to call it ........ but i actually FAINTED after seeing that :-| omg .... i just had to comment with that. thats just madness....
- NickyBatts, on 02/11/2008, -0/+1Oh man, I was at that game. I was only a wee tot when it happened, luckily, ***** was way more raw back then so I was able to deal. My doctors tell me the new medication they are giving me should make the night tremors and night terrors subside... I am hopeful.
- mmcgrath20, on 02/11/2008, -0/+1To ammend my prior comment: Doctor's now report Zednik almost completely severed his common carotid artery. Malarchuk severed his external jugular vein. In other words, Zednik's injury was actually quite a bit worse than Malarchuk's. The physician's report that, if the carotid had actually been completely severed, it would have been "much more difficult" to control the bleeding and make the repair. Lucky, in a sense...

- r1y23, on 02/11/2008, -1/+40I cant imagine how scary that would be, I am amazed he had the state of mind to skate over to the bench as fast as he did.
- UNL1M1T3D, on 02/11/2008, -0/+18You could tell his face was full of fear and shock. I wouldn't be surprised if he made it there on pure adrenaline.
- jcpendexter, on 02/11/2008, -1/+3when that sort of thing happens, you just go, uh, ok, i'm *****. lets fix this asap.
extremely lucky guy- DephexTwin, on 02/11/2008, -0/+1It's lucky that these days in any major sport you know there is a substantial medical staff right there on call, and you can just kind of instinctively try to get to the sidelines to them without even trying to figure out what the hell is going on with you.
- rczik, on 02/11/2008, -0/+0The fact that he skated to the trainer instead of waiting for the medical team come to him could be a reason why he was able to survive this. He would have lost a lot more blood.
- blitzer, on 02/11/2008, -4/+198Hockey players are as tough as they come.

- tempz, on 02/11/2008, -0/+3I am relieved to hear that he has been taken to the same facility in Buffalo that provided such excellent care for Kevin Everett after he sustained his neck injury early last football season. My thoughts and prayers are with Zeds and his family.
- jattea, on 02/11/2008, -0/+3I think Kevin Everett was taken to Gates Circle hospital. Zednik was taken to Buffalo General, which is nearby to HSBC Arena. The local news is reporting he's in stable condition though...

Amazing that people live through this sort of thing. I can't even begin to imagine what must be going through their heads as they suddenly can't breath >. - ssn697, on 02/11/2008, -0/+1To add to the Malarchuk story, his MOM was in attendance at the game. You couldn't see it in that clip, but he left the ice pretty quickly, because he "didn't want his mom to watch him die on the ice"...
- TheSwagger, on 02/11/2008, -2/+14ESPN says hes in stable condition. Hopefully he'll be back out on the ice soon.
- SizzorB, on 02/11/2008, -0/+1I would think there would be some kind of mental obstacle he'll have to get passed to play again, once he's finally healed enough to play.
- lastthingusee, on 02/11/2008, -0/+7He's a hockey player. He'll be back out there as soon as he can.

- Weip, on 02/11/2008, -2/+4I'm a french canadian, can I make some errors?! Caliss de tapette :)
- Brad324, on 02/11/2008, -0/+6sacre bleu, vous avez failer, vraiment failer.
My french is worse than your english.
- kmadigan, on 02/11/2008, -0/+3look up Clint Malarchuk. Then you'll get it.
- tmracerx, on 02/11/2008, -1/+4don't worry those of us from Buffalo knew exactly what you meant.
- Arcesius, on 02/11/2008, -1/+1He's referring to Clint Malarchuk, methinks.
- drakenlot, on 02/11/2008, -0/+1Considering he explained it before your comment... I think so too.
- Starkyy, on 02/11/2008, -2/+9If you were trying to be funny it didn't work. It doesn't even make sense.
- whoatemytuna, on 02/11/2008, -0/+43Update: Surgery was successful and he is recovering. No word yet on the extent of his injuries.
- jon2k, on 02/11/2008, -0/+8Scary stuff.
- yossarian24, on 02/11/2008, -0/+43I had my arm skated over last summer in a game... it was real quick and he didn't even press down hard but it was enough to cut an artery in my arm and cause a LOT of blood... I can't IMAGINE getting my neck cut... I hope hes ok
- BubbaChet, on 02/11/2008, -0/+1I refereed a game when my partner slit is own wrist with his skate. Blood spurted from the center face-off dot to the referee's crease -- on an olympic-sized rink. Ugh. To say I threw up would be a gross understatement.
- dawesdust12, on 02/11/2008, -0/+0How the ***** could he do that. I've cut my finger once refereeing, and that was because I got slashed and got caught with the sharpness fo someones stick.

- Saea, on 02/11/2008, -4/+12Ek, my heart goes out to that guy, as a human to a human.
Could care less if that he plays sports.- ilapko, on 02/11/2008, -2/+4CouldN'T care less... common mistake
- SuspicionVandit, on 02/11/2008, -30/+7man, if I were in that position, the first thing I'd be worried about is my penis.
- newmanator77, on 02/11/2008, -1/+12what are you talking about
- UNL1M1T3D, on 02/11/2008, -2/+15Isn't your penis in your neck?
- RandomTaskMan, on 02/11/2008, -0/+1don't want your penis cut do ya?
- Brad324, on 02/11/2008, -1/+5eh, my penis was brutally cut once. By a doctor.
- Lyanto, on 02/11/2008, -0/+1SuspicionVandit, if that's true, you either have your priorities wrong or just have really bad luck.

- skeletorcares, on 02/11/2008, -28/+135Say the NBA is more a sport than the NHL. I dare you.
- dsmatrix, on 02/11/2008, -7/+66Sports aren't necessarily judged by the type of injuries you can receive in them.
- ChaosProfessor, on 02/11/2008, -2/+29if so midget tossing is the most dangerous
- skeletorcares, on 02/11/2008, -0/+31Well aware. Otherwise nascar would be one.
- NJScoundrel, on 02/11/2008, -3/+16True, however you can judge the the toughness of the players of said sports based on their ability to deal with injuries.
In the NHL, you get your carotid artery cut and you skate off the ice under your own power until you collapse in your teammate's arms from loss of blood. In the NBA, you hurt your shoulder and you get taken off the court on a wheelchair.- grinchdec23, on 02/11/2008, -0/+3Also, you get elbowed in the face going for the ball and it makes the highlights.
- Feep, on 02/11/2008, -8/+10Because we all know that a sport's measure of greatness is how badly people can get hurt while playing. Next time, display some decency instead of using a barely averted tragedy as fodder for some childish debate.
- D3koy, on 02/11/2008, -0/+18Sports != Injuries...And no one was calling into question the "sportsy-ness" of Hockey...
- skeletorcares, on 02/11/2008, -6/+2You'd be suprised.
- vanguardanon, on 02/11/2008, -15/+20NBA? Oh please. It's an easy sport in comparison. Let's say you found two people from deep in the jungles of Africa or Brazil that had never seen either game. Now you asked them to play basketball. They would be half decent. Even a child can catch and throw that giant ball and learn to dribble in a day.
Now ask them to play ice hockey. They wouldn't even be able to stand. - kevinduckworth, on 02/11/2008, -10/+6The NBA is more a sport than the NHL.
p.s. What happens to me now?
p.s.s. How exactly is sportiness rated? Is there an official scale or something?- cobainirvana, on 02/11/2008, -2/+3basketball sux. totally boring
- drakenlot, on 02/11/2008, -1/+1I admit, now that Toronto actually has a good team, I'm getting interested in it.
I'm amazed that the Raptors are the best team in Toronto. Three years ago, they sucked.

- cobainirvana, on 02/11/2008, -2/+3basketball sux. totally boring
- offspring06, on 02/11/2008, -0/+4Well Hockey players have to be more athletic than basketball players. You wouldn't find a player like Shaq in the NHL.
- dsmatrix, on 02/11/2008, -7/+66Sports aren't necessarily judged by the type of injuries you can receive in them.
- cbrophy78, on 02/11/2008, -23/+4Vampire's wet dream - that was awesomely scary that never happened to me
- homer420032003, on 02/11/2008, -3/+133Announcer 1: I've never seen so much blood that quickly.
Announcer 2: Uhhh I'm afraid I have but...- r1y23, on 02/11/2008, -0/+89he is talking about what happened to clint malarchuk. He announced that game too
- leazarus, on 02/11/2008, -1/+4just watched that video again. the music as they cut to commercial made it worse.
- BlueBuffalo, on 02/11/2008, -0/+33The reason the second announcer said that is because 20 years ago it happened to a Buffalo Sabres goalie, and it looked even worse. Those are the Buffalo announcers. This is the clip from 1989:
http://youtube.com/watch?v=eOsLboX8J2k- Tamant, on 02/11/2008, -0/+4CONSPIRACY!
- jattea, on 02/11/2008, -0/+17He was talking about Clint Malarchuk, who played for the Sabres in the late 80s and has his throat cut. Rick Jeanneret was announcing for the Sabres then too.
- D3koy, on 02/11/2008, -0/+24Note to self: If I ever play hockey, avoid games where Jeanneret is announcing
- Coffeedemon, on 02/11/2008, -0/+3And he puts it top shelf where grandma hides the antibiotics!!!
- D3koy, on 02/11/2008, -0/+24Note to self: If I ever play hockey, avoid games where Jeanneret is announcing
- Abennobashi, on 02/11/2008, -1/+22Oh well let me explain:
he was talking about clint malarchuk.....wait.
Nevermind. - meridian300, on 02/11/2008, -0/+9The second announcer said that because he was talking about what happened to Clint Malarchuk 20 years before.
- olives, on 02/11/2008, -0/+42are you trying to tell me that the same thing happened to clint malarchuk 20 years ago? because that's what i'm gathering from all thirty of your replies.
- unearth, on 02/11/2008, -7/+56The infamous moment that Malarchuk is perhaps most known for occurred during a game on March 22, 1989, between the visiting St. Louis Blues and Malarchuk's Buffalo Sabres. Steve Tuttle of the Blues and Uwe Krupp of the Sabres collided at the mouth of the goal, and Tuttle's skate caught Malarchuk on the neck, slicing open his internal carotid artery.
With pools of blood collecting on the ice, Malarchuk somehow left the ice under his own power with the assistance of his team's athletic trainer, Jim Pizzutelli, ATC. Many spectators were physically sickened by the sight, with nine fainting and two suffering heart attacks while two teammates vomited on the ice and his mom got scared and said 'You're movin' with your auntie and uncle in bel Air'
I whistled for a cab and when it came near the license plate said fresh and it had dice in the mirror. If anything I can say this cab is rare but I thought 'Now forget it' - 'Yo homes to Bel Air'. I pulled up to the house about 7 or 8 and I yelled to the cabbie 'Yo homes smell ya later'. I looked at my kingdom, I was finally there, to sit on my throne as the Prince of Bel Air- DephexTwin, on 02/11/2008, -1/+20Uh.... your brain sort of melted towards the end of your comment.
- BIGMEX, on 02/11/2008, -2/+5ah ok..... i see what you did there.
- da_bradler, on 02/11/2008, -0/+9lol, that's like the 5th time I've read that comment in my life and it still always catches me off guard. too funny
- element247, on 02/11/2008, -1/+4***** win!
- Cerebral, on 02/11/2008, -1/+2I just love being Bellair'd and Rick Rolled!
- drakenlot, on 02/11/2008, -1/+3Wow, I'd say this would be the last place I'd see a bel-Air, but this is Digg. People make jokes no matter what the news is about.
- rexbron, on 02/11/2008, -2/+1... But that was back in Nam...
- r1y23, on 02/11/2008, -0/+89he is talking about what happened to clint malarchuk. He announced that game too
- alilhappything, on 02/11/2008, -1/+3That sucks, glad to hear he's okay.
- daizaru, on 02/11/2008, -1/+11Oh wow, when something that tragic happens it amazes me that they didn't just call the game. I mean he could have died.
Anyways I'm really glad he's ok.- UNL1M1T3D, on 02/11/2008, -0/+1If memory serves me correct when Jiri Fischer almost died, they called the game, so I am surprised they didn't call the game also.
- Capskid8, on 02/11/2008, -0/+1they were going to call the game untill it was announced he was stable.
- miraimatt, on 02/11/2008, -0/+3They were discussing whether or not to continue, but once it was announced that he was in stable condition they continued with the game. If it had been worse, they probably would have ended it.
- drakenlot, on 02/11/2008, -0/+1The rest of the game was really slow and uninteresting since everyone was thinking of what happened. They could've stopped the game and no one would've said anything.
- mikemc620, on 02/11/2008, -0/+0the referees were talking about whether or not they wanted to finish the game during the 15 minute break they had, while the zamboni was cleaning the ice. they heard that zednik was in stable condition and decided to finish the game
- UNL1M1T3D, on 02/11/2008, -0/+1If memory serves me correct when Jiri Fischer almost died, they called the game, so I am surprised they didn't call the game also.
- Trollmaster, on 02/11/2008, -0/+8same thing happened to a goalie long time ago... that's why goalies wear neck guards now... guess the players are gonna be wearing em too after this.... here's the video of the goalie
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aXymAx3KLww- ggacid, on 02/11/2008, -0/+1The players won't be wearing any neck guards.... They don't even wear face masks! Getting nailed in the face by a puck or a stick are WAY higher odds than freak accidentally getting slashed by a skate... Good to hear that he's in stable condition!
- twishart, on 02/11/2008, -0/+31There was a standing ovation when they announced that he was going to be okay.
He's still so badass that he skated himself over to the bench. You can see the zigzag of blood when the camera shows the full shot of the rink.- Capskid8, on 02/11/2008, -1/+3i think anyone would want to save their life as fast as possible also...badass or not
- da_bradler, on 02/11/2008, -0/+1It's not the type of injury that hurts a lot and puts you into shock. so if you don't panic you can still operate normally, the biggest difficulty would be the light headedness from the loss of blood . I looked into a bit when it happened last time in hockey. It's certainly a life threatening injury but with medical staff so so close dying from it is far less likely.
- AmelFl, on 02/11/2008, -3/+22no way I'm going to watch this
- Soave, on 02/11/2008, -0/+6You can't see anything at all (in terms of blood), but the idea of it makes you uncomfortable the whole time you're watching.
- basic0, on 02/11/2008, -0/+1Yeah, I think I might skip SportsCenter tonight. I think Junior Seau's arm and Jorge Garbajosa's leg is enough slow-motion sports carnage for me in one 12-month period.
- Cerebral, on 02/11/2008, -0/+1Don't forget to add 2 Girls 1 Cup to that list.
- DefaultGen, on 02/11/2008, -0/+1At least one person here agrees with me.
- tlo182, on 02/11/2008, -2/+3Holy *****, I really hope he's ok. I played hockey for about 10 years, and this was always one of my fears. I wouldn't play without a neck guard, even though they're flimsy pieces of crap.
- mikehrp, on 02/11/2008, -20/+5Blades of Glory comes to mind
- mantzdapantz, on 02/11/2008, -22/+3I thought only figure skaters tried the Iron Lotus
- Capskid8, on 02/11/2008, -4/+1beat me...damn
- VinnieDaMac, on 02/11/2008, -6/+1I thought it said Snake at the top. Anyways, I hope he gets better. The video doesn't show any blood but it may still be a little scary to see how it happened.
- VinnieDaMac, on 02/11/2008, -0/+0Correction, there is blood but the quality of youtube video sucks so you won't really notice it. However, if you watch the sports highlights on TV, you might want to turn away because it's pretty graphic.
- ledguitar, on 02/11/2008, -1/+2Actually the blood is pretty easy to see when the camera shows the full rink shot.
- VinnieDaMac, on 02/11/2008, -0/+0Correction, there is blood but the quality of youtube video sucks so you won't really notice it. However, if you watch the sports highlights on TV, you might want to turn away because it's pretty graphic.

- drakenlot, on 02/11/2008, -0/+1He's a youngin, leave him be. He wasn't even thought about back in the 80s
- offspring06, on 02/11/2008, -0/+1The last time I seen a guy get his neck sliced open was in the 80's when Buffalo Sabres goalie Clint Malarchuk had a similar accident. Who would have thought it would have happened in Buffalo again. Here is the link.

- anonatron, on 02/11/2008, -7/+3Not being a hockey fan myself it would have been nice if the description had mentioned when this had happened and the current state of the player. I found the info out, but I had to look it up. I am glad he is doing ok now, hope for the best.
- Trebis, on 02/11/2008, -51/+4If this happened every game, I would watch more hockey.
I hope he's doing all right though.- ledguitar, on 02/11/2008, -0/+9You're sick. That's just ***** up.
- UNL1M1T3D, on 02/11/2008, -0/+6That's the equivalent of you saying "well if there were more near death crashes, I would watch Nascar more".
- Jones82, on 02/11/2008, -1/+7Wait.. isn't that why people watch Nascar?
- drakenlot, on 02/11/2008, -0/+3Same reason people slow down when driving by an accident. I guess everyone wants a dose of destruction alongside a morning cup of jo.
- Jones82, on 02/11/2008, -1/+7Wait.. isn't that why people watch Nascar?
- Stochio, on 02/11/2008, -2/+3I'm guessing you're a NASCAR fan.

- Slowface, on 02/11/2008, -1/+11I watched this game tonight and the shot of the blood trail made me feel sick.
I am glad he is doing well after surgery and hope he has a quick recovery, and I'm proud of my fellow Buffalonians at the game who gave a very respectful and classy standing ovation after it was announced that Zednick was in stable condition.- ThinkSoJoE, on 02/11/2008, -0/+3I agree with you 100%. Even sitting at home watching on MSG-HD, I applauded when they made the announcement that he was stable and on his way to the hospital.
- ObeseEurotrash, on 02/11/2008, -0/+4yeah, because we know that usually when that happens people boo. What did you expect lol.
- drakenlot, on 02/11/2008, -1/+1I remember fans cheering when a player was seriously injured. Can't remember if it was in football or hockey though, but I seem to think it was in Buffalo.
- WhatsUpWithJack, on 02/11/2008, -4/+1Buffalonians are not classy, I will vouch for that after dealing with a whole obnoxious section of you Tuesday night in Boston, however I give you SOME credit for doing the obviously common sense thing to do after having witnessed that.
- Arcesius, on 02/11/2008, -0/+3Yeah, you encountered a few rowdy Buffalo Sabres fans and you make a judgment call about everyone from Buffalo. Eff off, jerk.
- KyleKruchok, on 02/11/2008, -0/+4Props for using the word, "Buffalonians."

- freetron, on 02/11/2008, -1/+4When I was in junior high, I checked an opponent hard against the glass and spun around to race down the ice to position myself for the next play. What I didn't know while skating back was that my one of my skates had cut a hole in my opponents cheek and his tongue slipped out through the hole. A very ghastly scene and I still feel very badly about it to this day.
