- cheese0089, on 05/28/2009, -0/+35Well, this will be what determines whether or not Marian Hossa made the right decision to leave the Pens and go to the Red Wings. I wouldn't have it any other way.
- LordStandley, on 05/28/2009, -0/+32Nothing better than hockey!
- Wreckage, on 05/28/2009, -6/+31Just like last year....I predict the same result.
- mikeruiz7, on 05/28/2009, -0/+17Being from Chicago, I'm proud of the Blackhawks, sad to see them lose, but really, really happy that everyone can finally shave their beards.
- TheJimid, on 05/28/2009, -8/+23The Penguins will beat the Red Wings the same day Duke Nukem Forever comes out.
- Rev0lver, on 05/28/2009, -2/+15I love how Penguins fans talk about Hossa as though he owed the team anything.
He was a mercenary to you guys, a playoff rental and nothing more. It's not like he went off to the Flyers either, so it wasn't a rival he went off to. Lastly, it's the ***** Red Wings! Who wouldn't sign with them? I mean, what greater validation of talent could you ask for? - str1fe, on 05/28/2009, -0/+11Darren Helm is such a little beast. That kid is a future face of the Detroit Red Wings, you can tell it already. Right up there with Ericsson! Next time I can save up enough to get a new jersey, I think I'm going with #43 in red...
It speaks leagues of Detroit's depth when they can win two games in a row with Datsyuk, Lidstrom, and Draper all out with injury, especially when Ericsson takes an unexpected leave of absence for one of those games due to an appendicitis surgery. Pittsburgh is a much tougher team this year than last, but so is Detroit. I expect a similar result as last year :D
Also, dugg for hockey and Jeffler. - iwantansi, on 05/28/2009, -0/+11after that mess you call the Lions...I guess ill throw you a bone..
8===8 - FaithclubDotNet, on 05/28/2009, -0/+10I'm a Penguins fan, but I know this is going to be a difficult series. Penguins may be lucky with two of the Red Wings top players out due to injuries. Still the Red Wings like to play a 5 man offense which hurt the Penguins last year. It wasn't until Penguins started dumping the puck in around game 3 that they were able to separate their offense from the defense because the defense had to go back and play the puck. If the Penguins get shutdown in their style of play, it could be really bad. But if Penguins can get north/south hockey going(which they didn't last year), then it could be a good series. I wonder how the Pen's third line are going to do vs the Red Wings. They aren't snipers, but they have a lot of energy and determination to fight for the puck in the corners. I'm really looking forward to the series.
- crowbar77, on 05/28/2009, -2/+10I really don't know who to call on this series, to me the biggest question will be the pens defense. When hal gill is part of your top shutdown defensive pairing, it's really hard to tell what your going to get. Should be a much better final than last year at least.
- KrazyKoala, on 05/28/2009, -4/+11Stop crying about him crying, so many hockey fans complain about that and I'm tired of it. He doesn't complain nearly as much as critics make it seam, and he and Malkin are the undeniable stars of the playoffs thus far.
- Wreckage, on 05/28/2009, -2/+9Hossa will score the winning goal in game 7 to clinch the cup.
- Waynerz99, on 05/28/2009, -13/+19Hope the cry baby loses again, tired of coming back from every commercial to see him whining to the refs about one thing or the other.
- jaromir68, on 05/28/2009, -1/+7The Red Machine is ready but the Penguins have learned what to expect since last year's meeting, much like the Oilers did from 1983 to 84 [for what its worth, Pens in seven]. Whatever the result it will be a must watch series--if you don't like this match-up you do not like hockey.
- crowbar77, on 05/28/2009, -5/+11The so called "cry baby" has 28 points in 17 PLAYOFF games. nuff said.
- GTOFan350, on 05/28/2009, -1/+7Obviously, Pens really didn't need Hossa. They were fantastic in the later part of the playoffs. Sweeping any team in the playoffs is no easy feat but doin it in the Eastern Conference championship is unheard of. I totally believe that Pens will take this one and my reasoning is that Pens are a much more mature team than they were last season, plus the Red Wings aren't exactly young so they have to be slowing down a bit. If Pens put Malkin and Crosby on the same line, who is the Red Wings going to guard against? I'm not taking anything away from Detroit at they are a extremely talented team with Lindstrom, Zetterburg, Datsyuk, and Osgood just to name a few. Its definetly going to be an interesting series and I cannot wait. GO PENS!!
- Rev0lver, on 05/28/2009, -8/+13Go Red Wings. Nothing I'd love to see more than Cindy's Scott Tenorman pube facial hair soak up his tears once more.
- mhollerb, on 05/28/2009, -3/+8being a crybaby is independent of skill. no one argues that he's is an immensely talented player. this is from a wings fan who sell his soul for another cup.
but when you're voted by your peers as the league biggest whiner, what does that say?
furthermore, having two players lead your team is not the way to win cups; having 8 goals from dan cleary or an amazing shorthanded shift by darren helm is. you really think players like tyler kennedy or maxime talbot can carry you when sid and geno stumble? my depth and experience trump your 2 stars and their vaginas anyday.
go schwings - steeltormentor, on 05/28/2009, -2/+7Go Wings! I buried you guys for no constructive comments....
Wings will win because of their depth and experience. Plus goaltending will be exposed as a Penguin weakness... - schrutefan, on 05/28/2009, -2/+7I hope Detroit loses and Hossa does a facepalm. That would be hilarious.
- str1fe, on 05/28/2009, -0/+5Is this the new "When hell freezes over"?
- zuiquan, on 05/28/2009, -1/+5I'd wait a bit to see if they give him a new number. 43 is more of a try-out number.
- Wreckage, on 05/28/2009, -0/+4Except for Chelios of course. :-p
- gregzav, on 05/28/2009, -5/+9Red Wings repeat
- Coercion, on 05/28/2009, -1/+5my moms is a red wings fan and i'm a pens fan, so much fan last year. here we go again!
should be a great series
long live hockey!
Bill Guerin ftw!
Go Pens! - LaurenCC, on 05/28/2009, -3/+7Hell yeah, Detroit. We are still good at something!
- highlymodified, on 05/28/2009, -9/+12GO WINGS!
(...please, this is the only thing Detroit has left... throw us a bone here.) - SPRFRKR, on 05/28/2009, -0/+3GM and Chrysler for that matter...
- beervolcano, on 05/28/2009, -0/+3I don't care for either team, but I'm hoping for an exciting series. Yay hockey!
- inactive, on 05/28/2009, -0/+3Scratch that, he wins it in Game 6 in TRIPLE OVERTIME.
- indiancompanion, on 05/28/2009, -4/+7hoping for a repeat, but penguins have gotten better, even without Hossa, either way, will be a fun series.
- str1fe, on 05/28/2009, -2/+5In overtime.
What a beauty that would be. - DennisPwnsj00, on 05/28/2009, -0/+3I keep getting flashbacks of Igor Larionov when I see the back of Abdelkader's jersey.
- MrZop, on 05/28/2009, -1/+3Am i the only one who read the story title and without pause also added ", again." to it.?
- Wreckage, on 05/28/2009, -0/+2I was joking, but maybe when he's old enough to grow a beard......
- marcduke, on 05/28/2009, -0/+2Not well done, though.
- crowbar77, on 05/28/2009, -0/+2Not to mention Gretzky early in his career was just as bad.
- HappyScrappy, on 05/28/2009, -0/+2You didn't watch Babcock's press conference after the game today. He said "usually you are rewarded for winning, but now they seem to be trying to cram all this in" and he ended it with the key phrase "but they don't ask me about these things". This is the same phrase he uses when complaining about bad calls by the refs in a sly fashion so he doesn't get fined.
So he most definitely was complaining, and he is a Wing.
Two days may be plenty to you, but if it means playing without their captain, it's still a penalty. How do you think this would affect the Pens if they didn't have their captain? A whole hell of a lot, I'll tell you. And they get no days off after game 1, so if their captain can't be in game 1, he won't be in game 2 either.
It'd be one thing if the schedule just said you get two days no matter what. But the NHL revising the schedule to give them less time for doing better when it will hurt them this much doesn't seem proper.
Pittsburgh got 4 days off after going 7 against the Caps. Then they got two days off twice in their 4-game series. They only played 5 games in two weeks.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2008%E2%80%9309_Pitts ...
Meanwhile, Detroit played 5 games against CHI in 11 days, and 6 in two weeks going back to the ANA series. In the ANA series, they played 7 games in two weeks.
I don't get it.
PIT does deserve an extra day off for winning in 4. I can't deny that. - GTOFan350, on 05/28/2009, -0/+2Why does everyone hate hockey. I think he single handily revitalized hockey and he doesn't cheat like Ovechkin. If you hate him cuz he "whines" too much, you might want to think way way back when Gretsky was new in the NHL. He was know for his whining also but he turned out to be the Jordan of hockey. When Gretzky was asked if he thought anyone could break his records, he answered that Sidney Crosby could, and added that Crosby was the best player he had seen since Mario Lemieux. Crosby is an incredible talent and he made the Pens the fastest growing NHL franchise to date. So get over the "I hate Sidney Crosby" routine cuz you have no reason to be like that.
- str1fe, on 05/28/2009, -0/+2Cheap shots on star players? Detroit doesn't roll that way.
If it was an Anaheim/Pittsburgh final, you bet Crosby and/or Malkin would get knocked out pretty damn quick. - Lososaurus, on 05/28/2009, -3/+5Maybe that Hossa guy changing sides will affect things :)
I'm pulling for the Wings, I just don't like the Pens( and that is coming from a diehard Kings fan ). - sgerwel1985, on 05/28/2009, -0/+2Hal Gill is a mixed bag if you ask me. There are games he plays when you're like "wow this guy is just a beast" then there are the games like "how did he even get into the league". But there is no question, thus far, when he has been called upon in the playoffs he has shined.
- StayPuft85, on 05/28/2009, -3/+4COME ON PENS!!!
- zuiquan, on 05/28/2009, -0/+1@str1fe, I say I think it might get changed because new guys often start off with ridiculous numbers and then the teams drop them down to something more respectable once they get established. I'm pretty sure Helm didn't walk into the room and get chuffed when he saw 43 hanging in his stall. You've got to remember he's not even a regular member yet. Emphasis on yet. Unless he's grown attached to 43 you'll see him in a lower number next year when he makes the team. Mark my words.
- GTOFan350, on 06/03/2009, -0/+1@HappyScrappy: http://www.forbes.com/2009/05/08/fastest-growing-t ...
- fireball9199, on 06/06/2009, -0/+1@happyscrappy dugg for gordie howe refrence
- steeltormentor, on 05/28/2009, -0/+1Your prediction only seems plausible if the Penguins win Games 1 AND 2 in Detroit. Detroit has the best road record, veterans everywhere, and has been through this countless times. If, which I disagree with, Pittsburgh does win 1 & 2, then splitting 3 and 4 in Pitts would lead back to Detroit for Game 5 and then the clinch in Pittsburgh. If they split 1 & 2, sit back and watch Detroit come out of the gate. Game 3 will be similar to Game 4 in Chicago.
They don't call it The Red Menace for nothing..... - spuggy, on 05/28/2009, -0/+1@Rev0lver: We dislike Hossa because he strung us along, not because he left. He asked the Penguins to ante up a 7 year contract, and the Penguins did so with the understanding that he would likely sign with them and thus let some of the top tier free agents pass by (as well as letting Ryan Malone go).
Shame on Ray Shero for falling for it, and kudos to Hossa for being one of the few players I've ever seen to pass up the money (from Edmonton as well, he had a 9 million / year x9 year offer from them). But to act like we have no gripes whatsoever is a little unfair. If he didn't want to resign, say so and be upfront with it and both parties can move on.
At the end of the day, losing Hossa essentially gained us Brooks Orpik and Jordan Staal, as the cap hit would have been very similar. Are we better off without him now and those two long-run (and for the future)? Guess this series will be the start of letting us know.
(As an aside, I will say I'm a bit bitter about the Red Wings obviously going against the spirit of the cap with the Zetterberg and Franzen contracts. Again, kudos to them for finding the loophole, but don't try to tell me that it's not at least *a little bit* shady.) - Mu5ica1MiL3s, on 05/31/2009, -0/+1I've come to call it a 'crush-tash'
looks like a poop stain on his upper lip. -
