- ivand67, on 02/16/2009, -1/+23It was about time. Therrien was great in 2006-07 when the team had 105 points and got this team to play defense while still having aggressive transition game. Last season obviously they almost won the Cup, and again I thought he did a great job. There are many Pens fans who never liked Therrien, but I was always a supporter.
I wonder if this move comes 1 month too late though. The fact that they waited this long shows that Ray Shero, Lemieux and company had some faith in Therrien. It's the players' fault that this season has sucked this much. And Shero obviously could have done a lot better than Miroslav Satan in the offseason. Hossa really screwed us over bad.
The Gonchar injury might have ended up costing Therrien his job, along with the injuries to Ryan Whitney and Fleury (who was out 15 games). And the one guy that we lost in free agency that actually had something to do with the Pens winning the division last year was Ryan Malone. His replacement, Ruslan Fedotenko, came back last night after missing about 6 weeks or so - that hurt us a lot too, especially considering the team's lack of depth on the wings.
So this was almost inevitable when you consider the injuries and the team playing as badly as it did defensively from the middle of November until last night. And all those embarrassing losses to ***** teams like Toronto didn't help.
People say, how can they be out of the playoffs with Crosby and Malkin? Well when your defense sucks this much and every game you have different lines and you got 3 or 4 AHLers playing, you end up losing even when Sid and Malkin put up 3 or 4 points. And other than them we don't really have that much scoring. - Hockey37, on 02/16/2009, -1/+17Hopefully this will be the kick in the ass that they need to get out of the funk. After the San Jose game, I thought that was a turn-around game. Then they go and take a giant crap after going up 2 against the Leafs, on HNIC no less.
- Dorkside, on 02/16/2009, -1/+10No surprise here. When a team that talented does that bad, it was only a matter of time before the coach was fired.
- ivand67, on 02/16/2009, -1/+9Oh wow another Crosby crying comment. How original and witty. Hahaha... Idiot
- chrisgnv, on 02/16/2009, -0/+7THANK GOD. I was so grateful to hear this news a few hours ago. Therrian was great but he is a disciplinarian and that message--his message-- will only have hold on the players for so long. I'm pretty excited for Bylsma; he's got the baby Pens as the #2 team in the east, is young, and motivational. Pretty excited for at least a spirited attempt at a playoff run!
- Jeffler, on 02/16/2009, -1/+7As much as I dislike Sid.
1. Crybaby or not, Crosby is one of the best players in the world.
2. How do you send someone BACK to the minors when they were never there to start with? - inactive, on 02/16/2009, -0/+6No surprise indeed. However, If I told you at the beginning of the season that Therrien would be fired after getting romped by the Leafs, you probably would have punched me in the face.
- navidb, on 02/16/2009, -0/+5it was all a dream, i used to read word up magazine
- chrisgnv, on 02/16/2009, -1/+6Yeah that was such a dirty hockey fight /s
- RyFo18, on 02/16/2009, -2/+7They have the leagues top two scorers and they still blow ass. I can understand the firing.
- Rev0lver, on 02/16/2009, -0/+5Rangers need to do the same with Sather and Renney.
- Jeffler, on 02/16/2009, -0/+5To be fair, several of the Leafs have been playing way over their heads lately (Stajan, Moore, Blake, Ponikarovsky, White), and have a thing against killing the Pens this year (in the top 10 players against the pens this year, 5 of them are leafs. Antropov is first with 8 points in 4 games against them).
- supermanly, on 02/16/2009, -2/+6Honestly, 5 unanswered goals against the Leafs.
- phxsuns32, on 02/16/2009, -0/+4Who knows, maybe Pittsburgh is hoping to find another successful coaching change like Hartsburg's head-scratching revival of the Ottawa Senators.
- Jeffler, on 02/16/2009, -0/+4Its also 3 hours in, in the hockey section, on a Sunday night. 38 diggs is actually quite high given the circumstances.
Though I get the point you're trying to make, and I lol'd - ImBreno, on 02/16/2009, -0/+4six
- ivand67, on 02/16/2009, -3/+7***** retard. I love how big a boner most hockey fans have for Crosby - this has nothing to do with Sid, the team has struggled and he was 2nd in scoring before Ovechkin got a hat trick today, but he still has to find a reason to insult Crosby. Grow up.
- Jeffler, on 02/16/2009, -6/+10Is anyone actually shocked about this? If you are, there's a tower in Paris we're shutting down and scrapping..want to buy the steel?
- klitzbtc, on 02/16/2009, -0/+4I see a lot of people that are saying it's not Therrien's fault, and mostly because the incredible amount of injuries the Pens have had to face this season.
Let me just say that this is entirely *****. I've watched every single Pens game this season (and every season before, as long as I can remember), and there is just a huge lack of any offensive or defensive play conducting behind the benches. Neither Therrien or Yeo can assemble a successful offensive zone drive, or neutral zone trap. You can say the lack of talent is what fails to get these plays working, but at the same time your coaching needs to be modular and learn how to adapt to not only the styles of the opposing team, but how well your players are working together. The most that it ever seems Therrien will do is rearrange the lines, hoping that something will "magically" connect and will put the team on the scoreboard.
I want to see a coach come in and change up the style of play entirely, even with the injuries there is a boatload of talent on the team, we just need someone to come in and put it all together.
At the same time I'd like to see a new goalie coach come in, I'm not very happy with the way (sans Conklin) any Pens goalie has played in the past 3 years. Too much deflecting the puck to the side boards, not enough puck control.
/rant - Jeffler, on 02/16/2009, -0/+4Except he did the right thing, in fact he should've stepped in earlier. Why Shero didn't already pull the plug is beyond me.
- MasterQ, on 02/16/2009, -0/+3I agree Therrien wasn't up to par this season and probably deserves to be fired, but look what he did for the team after they fired Edzo. I'm from Wilkes-Barre where he coached right before Pitt and he actually is a good coach when he's on his game. Wilkes-Barre was unstoppable right before he left, and after he took over a losing Pittsburgh team from Eddie O he made them a winning team in a few weeks. Not even close to the worst coach ever...
- PC269, on 02/16/2009, -2/+5He can't hear you with his Art Ross trophy in his ears.
- ivand67, on 02/16/2009, -4/+7Crosby's targeted as much as any player in the NHL and everyone complains to the refs when they feel the refs made a bad call. Especially captains, they talk to the refs as much as anyone.
You're just another jealous moron. - Jeffler, on 02/16/2009, -1/+4Five. They answered the 1st one.
- Jeffler, on 02/16/2009, -1/+4What is he being buried for? Its true.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4wqR17KrLKw - Coreyc150, on 02/16/2009, -0/+3about time, but how could they not fire Mike Yeo as well?
- crowbar77, on 02/16/2009, -0/+3This is surprising, was expecting to see pat quinn come in. Still I'm glad therrien is gone, it may not be his fault but it obviously just wasn't working anymore. Hopefully this will get crosby back to his old self.
- wkrausmann, on 02/16/2009, -0/+3Cheap shots happen in hockey every day and you decide that this cheap shot is unacceptable because it was Crosby.
If Crosby was on one's own favorite team, one will never complain about him. - ivand67, on 02/16/2009, -0/+3No they didn't. It was 6 unanswered goals. It was 2-0 Pens after the 1st period, and not only that the 2nd goal was a shorty by Billy Thomas, who has only like 10 goals in his career...
To let Thomas' shorty go to waste like that is a disgrace, and on top of that they had Gonchar AND Fedotenko back which was supposed to be a big emotional boost. - ArthasMenethil, on 02/16/2009, -0/+2Somewhat surprising considering the Pens have two of the best offensive players in the NHL and a good clutch goaltender.
I hope this sends a message to Glen Sather that he should fire Tom Renney sooner rather than later because while the Rangers may be in the playoffs now, it sure seems like they're sinking like an anvil. - ivand67, on 02/16/2009, -0/+2The Penguins' defense was in the top 10 in the NHL last year, so you're wrong about the Pens' defensemen.
They had been missing their #1 defenseman (Gonchar for the entire season), up until Saturday. Ryan Whitney also was hurt for half the season. So this season they've been injured and also underachieved, but it's mostly the way the entire team has played in their own zone that has led to the Pens giving up a lot more goals. It's team defense that has sucked, not the defensemen.
And for what it's worth, the salary cap is close to 60 million. Crosby and Fleury make just over 17 million combined - starting next year. Malkin is still on his entry level contract. Next year they'll have Crosby, Malkin, Fleury and Gonchar making a combined 27.4 million - that's LESS than half the salary cap to 4 players, not 3. Many other teams have the same problems, but with a good GM you can find good players to build a good team around those top guys. - FXNGLAS, on 02/16/2009, -0/+2Actually, we bury you down. Not digg you down. But the wings aren't doing too bad.
- zzzpoohzzz, on 02/16/2009, -0/+2no, no one is shocked... look at the title.
- inactive, on 02/16/2009, -3/+5If you look at the NHLPA poll that came out last week, over 50% of responding players named Crosby the biggest whiner in the league. That means they could have chosen from ANY player in the league, and over 50% of his peers gave him that label. That's evidence enough for me.
- KZWings, on 02/16/2009, -0/+2wkrausmann, "If Crosby was on one's own favorite team, one will never complain about him."
I would. - wrathbone, on 02/16/2009, -2/+4Crosby punched a guy in the balls from behind. True story.
- tyger168, on 02/16/2009, -0/+2Every win in the last month has been deemed the Penguins "turning a corner", until they proceed to lose the next game. There not much road left to turn on...
Therrien was hardly to blame, but something had to be done. - RyFo18, on 02/16/2009, -0/+2Ehh, he's a baby sure, but his numbers speak for themself. I would gladly welcome him to my favorite team.
- Jacare, on 02/16/2009, -0/+2yea that was last year. the loss of key players in the off season cost them dearly they only had 1 shot at the cup. the 08/09 nhl salary cap is $56.7 million and next season its either going to stay the same or go down because of the economy. malkin is in the last year of his rookie contract, next season he makes 9 million, crosby makes 9 million aswell, fluery makes 5.25 million, Gonchar 5.5m, thats 28.7 million already, thats over 50% of the cap providing it stays where it is. staal at 3.5, orpik 3.75, orpik 3, etc. your total committed cap hit next season so far is 46.385 million providing the cap stays the same that leaves you 10.3 million to add 7-10 players(not including IR,trades, callups etc), your gonna have to strike gold. no team can survive two 9 million dollar contracts, it just doesn't leave enough room for depth with a salary cap unless you luck out with several entry level contract players and a few breakout season players.
http://www.nhlnumbers.com/overview.php?team=PIT&am ... - SolituSneiku, on 02/16/2009, -0/+2The Pens are losing games that they have no business losing in, it makes me sick so I hope they go a new direction...plus the injuries aren't helping.
- Jacare, on 02/16/2009, -0/+2not a surprise at all, offense doesn't win hockey games defense does(figure of speech), those 3 players salaries cripple this team, especially in the coming years. Nearly 50% of your cap tied up in 3 players = fail. its not the coaches fault its the fact that they have ***** defense and suspect goal tending.
- jhuik, on 02/16/2009, -0/+2Is there a shortage of good coaches these days? Or is it simply harder and harder to coach over-valued athletes who perform great for a season here and there then rest until their contract comes due? It's gotta be pretty hard to tell someone what to do when they make ten times your salary. In the NHL, teams need to look at Detroit and New Jersey and imitate so much more of what these teams are doing - from the top down through GMs, coaching staff and scouts, etc. Build a winning organization that good players want to play for and win for, then coaching will only be a part of the picture. There's no excuse for the collapses we've seen by Pittsburgh, Anaheim, Ottawa, etc.
- cyrix, on 02/16/2009, -0/+2I'm not at all shocked. Sure they took some losses after last season, but come on... They have the two top scorers in the NHL and they're record is ***** awful. I've been a huge pens fan since I was a wee tike and this season has been such a frustrating experience.
- KirbyMorph, on 02/16/2009, -0/+2Anyone that thinks its Therrien's fault is a fool.
Gonchar - injured most of season.
Malone - gone.
Hossa - gone.
Whitney - injured for significant time.
Fleury - injured for month or so.
Fedotenko - injured for couple months.
Thats just a short list of key players injured or outright gone and doesn't even go into the energy line players that, whle not huge factors, do make a difference late in games, where the Penguins seem to be struggling.
Having Malkin and Crosby doesnt mean you win games by default. Look at Washington. they have the defense and second and third lines to back up their super stars. Add in the fact the Penguins powerplay has been neutered for most of the year with Gonchar off the point, simialr to how Montreal's has been with Souray gone, and there's very little wrong from a coaching standpoint.
the only reaosn I can see to get rid of Therrian is due to personal problems with players behind the scenes and the fact he's just not worth as much money as the actual players, so its easier to get rid of him and hope for some kind of spark than it is to tough it out. - belandrew, on 02/18/2009, -0/+1how you liking Chris Minard? (Alaska Aces Fan)
- belandrew, on 02/18/2009, -0/+1uhhhhhhh who hasnt?
- belandrew, on 02/18/2009, -0/+1whoa meant Chris Minard
- chookalana, on 02/20/2009, -0/+1haha, "aren't doing too bad." only 27 teams below them......
(and I say digg me down. I'm not a conformist......) - ivand67, on 02/16/2009, -1/+2@poopsmcgee - Yes, the media in some parts (Philly, Rangers) and people like Don Cherry and many hockey fans on the Internet have done their best to try to portray Crosby in a negative light because they don't like him, for whatever reason.
Crosby went overboard a couple times with the refs as an 18-year old rookie and got a reputation for being a whiner. If you say something a lot and keep repeating it over and over, people will eventally believe it. Such is the case with Crosby. It doesn't make it true. This is definitely a case of a bad reputation, and thanks mostly to the Internet, the players have picked up on it. It's exaggerated and blown out of proportion and I question that survey in the first place (it was done by ESPN). - belandrew, on 02/18/2009, -0/+1though the goal-scorere Chris Minard and the play of Sid the Kid is formidable
