- Hodor, on 06/19/2009, -3/+21still no stanley cup. maybe next time. just don't, whatever you do, join a team with Hossa on it; he's cursed.
- CaesarBlue, on 06/19/2009, -3/+20Amazing player. Absolutely electrifying to watch.
Just for people who haven't seen it, this year's top goal by Ovie in my opinion
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D_OaHMY2hQU - Scrappy1850, on 06/19/2009, -3/+12Go Ovie!
- fudsak, on 06/19/2009, -0/+9He certainly is a great player but the Caps are going to need more than him to win a cup. This isn't the NBA, a single player can't support an entire team. The Penguins won this year and the Wings won last year because of their depth.
- Cartman89, on 06/19/2009, -0/+9Ovechkin earned it. He brought life back into the Capitals and players like him make hockey so enjoyable to watch.
- J3553, on 06/19/2009, -1/+7you don't know ***** about the caps. they have loads of chemistry, but no defense.
- pp7k, on 06/19/2009, -0/+6Even their defense isn't that bad. With stronger goaltending they could have won the cup. Not to ***** on Varlamov, but he fell apart towards the end of the series, and Theodore sure as hell isn't the answer.
- spiderman222, on 06/19/2009, -1/+7What was with the Chaka Khan performance? Do they want people to change the channet? The NHL needs to hire better marketing people. It was worse than Def Leppard.
- Grazfather, on 06/19/2009, -4/+10Don't be sore, Crosby.
- Falldog, on 06/19/2009, -0/+6It's actually Boudreau who's turned the Caps around.
- Grazfather, on 06/19/2009, -0/+5You mean his team won while he watched.
- WaCkYmAk, on 06/19/2009, -1/+6Govie!
- madcat033, on 06/19/2009, -5/+10It all depends on how you define "best player." Hockey is a team sport. Ovechkin is arguably the most individually skilled, but that only counts in sports like tennis. The best hockey player in the world has to be someone who makes his teammates better. That would be Sid. Stanley Cup Champion Sid, not bitch ass crazy goal scoring Ovechkin. Unless he can outscore other teams on his ass, he aint gonna win *****.
- geesamba, on 06/19/2009, -0/+5When you are as good as he is and you are in that exact position, let us know. Until then, you can't say jack *****.
- slicky803, on 06/19/2009, -0/+5They're not playing games there, smart guy.
- pp7k, on 06/19/2009, -0/+4I LIKE TO YELL IN COMMENTS
- homestarbenner, on 06/19/2009, -1/+5Malkin and Crosby winning 1 Stanley Cup >> Ovechkin receiving multiple individual awards
- cquilliam, on 06/19/2009, -0/+4Def Leppard placing the cup upside down was one of the dumbest things I've ever seen. How the hell could you even make that mistake, even if you've never seen the thing before.
And anyone who hasn't won the cup, or isn't a caretaker of the cup should not be allowed to lift it. Touch it, fine, but never lift. - J3553, on 06/19/2009, -2/+6and to further prove it wasn't intentional, after the caps lost game 7 to the pens, he pulled gonchar aside and tried to explain everything to him. ovie didn't owe gonchar an explanation, but he didn't want gonchar thinking poorly of him. ovie's the best player in the league, and a class act.
- pp7k, on 06/19/2009, -2/+6Caps are good now? Well, they took Pittsburgh to seven games in round 2 of the playoffs. No, I think YOU are the one on crack.
Pens won the cup because Ovie told them to :) - TheRedLemon, on 06/19/2009, -1/+4Why would he be sore? We won the championship...
- GTOFan350, on 06/19/2009, -0/+3Then how bout this one? http://icehockey.suite101.com/article.cfm/nhl_s_ne ...
NHL does not check the sticks, the opposing team has to notify the refs then they will check it. - inactive, on 06/19/2009, -2/+5Alexander the Great!
- cquilliam, on 06/19/2009, -2/+5Why? Cause of an accidently knee on knee with gonchar? I've watched that replay over and over, and in no way do I think he tried that. Anyone thinking otherwise hasn't watch hockey enough to recognize the momentum each player had when they collided.
- ovechkin88, on 06/19/2009, -2/+5Before Sid VS Ovie battles start forming, lets remember that debate is meaningless and its a battle of who you like more in PERSONALITY. Unless of course you value goal scorers over playmakers (or vice versa) but in most cases, it won't matter what either player does there will be a strong bias against them if you dislike there Personality (Crosby the more well spoken and doesn’t take much risk with the press and Ovechkin with his funny yet risky comments and electrifying gameplay that seems to cause publicity). To each there own. Most cases you can see a reflection of the personality in yourself, and that is the player you will cheer for.
- wrathbone, on 06/19/2009, -0/+3I play hockey. It wasn't intentional. Gonchar was trying to avoid the check, didn't get out of the way, so his knee took it.
- numbnick, on 06/19/2009, -1/+4I have seen plenty of games where Ovechkin gets the puck in his defensive end rushes through the neutral zone and takes ridiculous shots as soon as he gets past the blue line. He hardly ever looks for the pass.
He is a very talented player but until he learns to play WITH his team it will be extremely hard to get his name on the cup.
I'm not knocking all of Ovechkin's talent, because he obviously has a lot. I'm just saying that his goals scored stats are over-inflated because he takes twice as many shots as anyone else in the NHL. His shooting percentage (Shots on Goal divided by Goals Scored) is lower than Malkin, Crosby, Datsyuk, Iginla, and just about every other big name in NHL. - GTOFan350, on 06/19/2009, -0/+3If Ovechkin is so fantastic of a player, why doesn't he have a Stanley? I'd take a Stanley Cup over MVP any day.
- pp7k, on 06/19/2009, -0/+3Yes, about as much natural ice as Anaheim, L.A., San Jose, Dallas, Tampa, etc.
Dummy. - jmferris, on 06/19/2009, -0/+2@ovechkin88 - I agree with *most* of what you say. However, I don't agree with "anyone can make an amazing pass". Part of great passing is great hockey vision, and that is a very rare talent. Setting up a play (being a passing playmaker) requires knowing where everyone is, where everyone will be, and who can beat the goaltender - even if the person to get the pass doesn't know that they can beat the goaltender. The players who can slow the game down like that are definitely not just "anyone".
By the same argument - Malkin only took 56% of the amount of shots Ovechkin did. If all things were equal, with Malkin taking 523 shots instead of 290, you could assume that he would have had 62 goals (rounding up to the nearest single goal). My point is the just being busier does not make someone better - or even a "goal scorer". Unless every goal someone scores is unassisted, there was someone on the ice who thought he saw someone who could score the goal. And when it comes to that skill, everyone is definitely not created equally. - AxsDeny, on 06/19/2009, -3/+5I have to agree with that. Ovie is definitely the best individually skilled forward in the NHL. I would also agree that Sid is the best overall player and leader. Ovie's never been a team player. For that reason, until he plays on a team with a big leader or he decides to step up and be a leader, he'll never win a cup.
- pp7k, on 06/19/2009, -1/+3I wonder if anyone has kept count of how many goals he's scored while on his ass? It may hit double digits. No doubt, best player in the world. Sorry Sid.
- jmferris, on 06/19/2009, -1/+3That is part of the problem, right there. It shouldn't be Crosby vs. Ovechkin. That is what the media wants it to be. Malkin showed that he can not only hang with the big boys, but that they need to hang with him. The Hart trophy has really become more of a popularity contest than anything else, in recent years. I really thought that either Datsyuk or Malkin *deserved* it more.
Arguments could be made for many of players. Henrik Lundqvist is the only reason that the Rangers stayed afloat this year, for example. The Capitals were at their most dangerous this season, when they were getting scoring from multiple lines. Ovechkin is a puck-hog, and it shows. So what if he lead the league in goals? He did it with a horrible shooting percentage. He only missed the scoring title by a few points, but yet he outshot Malkin by almost 230 shots. And that isn't even getting into how Malkin is a takeaway machine and plays all three zones (which is two more than Ovechkin played in the postseason). - inactive, on 06/19/2009, -2/+4SHUT UP OVIE IS BETTER
- Houdini91, on 06/19/2009, -3/+5madcat033, Sid isn't even the best player on the Penguins, much less the league! The best overall player on the Penguins is Malkin. He's outscored Sid in the regular season, outscored him in the playoffs, and actually can be a very good defensive player as well. Judging from the playoffs I don't think Sid has ever even HEARD of the word "defense".
- Nlewis4, on 06/19/2009, -1/+3just because ovie is a scoring machine doesn't mean he's selfish.
- ovechkin88, on 06/19/2009, -1/+3Since this is a ovie post only, I will say that if you were the coach, and you seen his wrist shot. Where would you want to put him? The coaches know 10x more then you know about hockey. You think they haven't talked about it? GET THE PUCK TO HIM NOW
There is a reason he plays the way he does, cause he is the only player that can wrist shot past a goalie near the blue line. If ANY other player could do this...they would be cherry picking big time - TwoFootAfro, on 06/19/2009, -0/+2What do -you- mean, "YOU PEOPLE"?
- sgerwel1985, on 06/19/2009, -1/+3Here is the way i look at the AO and Crosby debate. I'll take Malkin, who IMO is the best of both worlds. Malkin has a heck of a shot and has the ability to make everyone on the ice with him that much better. Personally, i think malkin should have got the Hart. But the way i look at it is... He was the MVP of the stanley cup winning team. So the best player on the best team... Sounds like an MVP of the league to me.
- geesamba, on 06/19/2009, -0/+2Tons of professional athletes get choked up after playoff series losses and championship losses--of all skill levels. Hell, almost as often when they do win (Gretzky did). They are people. Human. With natural emotional responses.
- zzzpoohzzz, on 06/19/2009, -2/+4bitter?
- pixburgher, on 06/19/2009, -0/+1@pp7k
Sid and Malkin don't play on the same line, except when they're on the power play.
For the last 20 games of the season and through the playoffs, Sid was scoring all his goals with Chris Kunitz and Bill Guerin. The beginning of the season was more variable, but Sykora was most often with Crosby (he had 46 pts on the season).
Malkin was teamed with Fedetenko (39 pts) and then a revolving door for the other wing position.
So the powerplay, when Crosby and Malkin are actually on the ice together, accounted for 40 of Sid's 103 pts and 41 of Malkin's 113 pts.
On the other hand, Ovechkin's power play, when he gets to skate with Backstrom, Semin, and Green, accounted for 46 of his 110.
Backstrom (88 pts), Semin (79 pts), and Green (73 pts making him by far the highest scoring Defenseman) make up a superior supporting cast to what either Crosby or Malkin had. And even if he's not skating with those guys, he's out there with Federov (33 pts in only 53 games) and Kozlov (41 pts in 67 games), two veterans who provide excellent support. - pixburgher, on 06/19/2009, -1/+2Malkin's the one who was nominated for the Hart, not Crosby.
Good job, Graz... just keep on proving how little all the haters know - pixburgher, on 06/19/2009, -0/+1I don't even think it's fair to say "That's what the media wants you to think."
I think the media has been very clear that this year is all about Malkin vs Ovechkin.
The people who insist on talking Crosby vs Ovechkin can only blame their own cluelessness, not the media. - ovechkin88, on 06/19/2009, -0/+1Good points, and I think I went to strong on *anyone can make an amazing pass*. I dont necessarly even believe in that myself, so I must have just spit it out.
There is a tremendous amount of talent for those playmakers. Agreed.
Shooting percentages are just that, percentages. There is no proof that Malkin can hit 62 goals. Its like a starting goaltender who leads the league in saves but has only played one game. Maybe Malking would have 62 goals, maybe he would only have a few more if he shot as many as Ovechkin.
Of course I'm going to end with..
You miss 100% of the shots you dont take. - GTOFan350, on 06/19/2009, -1/+2I completely agree.
- 4321234, on 06/19/2009, -0/+1He won the Pearson, so he must be cool with the rest of the players in the league. They're the ones who awarded it to him. So he can't be all that dirty or selfish.
