- RoroCo, on 05/05/2009, -38/+141We are witnessing the Magic vs Bird of hockey. Only Magic this time is a crazy Russian that is fun to watch and Larry is a whinny little bitch :)
- b9gh47q, on 05/05/2009, -2/+78Hats off to both of them ;)
- WarrenG1983, on 05/05/2009, -19/+87I'm Canadian, and I think Ovechkin > Crosby.
Just saying. - LeMAD, on 05/05/2009, -3/+60Ovechkin and Crosby are absolutely sick players. I'm a big fan of both if that's legal.
- J353, on 05/05/2009, -15/+57Ovechkin looks so happy to score goals, and Crosby looks like a jerk who enjoys tripping children.
- BobDle, on 05/05/2009, -1/+39dugg for hockey. hell yeah...
- Jeffler, on 05/05/2009, -1/+38This series has been nothing but sensational. Ovechkin and Crosby are trying to show each other up, Malkin is cold but still showing flashes of brilliance, same with Semin. Throw in Backstrom, Green, Staal, Gonchar, and many more..and this series was bound to be a classic. And the goalies...Fleury's been very good, but Varlamov is showing shades of Ken Dryden (Varlamov now has as many playoff wins now as he has regular season games played).
Oh, and if we're going to use the Magic vs. Bird of hockey comparison for the uninformed non-fans here, it would be like both of them getting 50 points. And 25 of Magic's being in the 4th Quarter.
Also, I'll try to youtube the highlights soon...been waiting for sportscentre. TSN is showing the Celtics game, TSN2 That's Hockey (which doesn't really do highlights). - Jeffler, on 05/05/2009, -1/+34The Basketball to hockey comparison is fair from a marketing standpoint. Magic vs. Bird solidified the NBA's presence, and Crosby vs. Ovechkin is the NHL's way of saying "What lockouts? We're coming back, bitches!"
NBC viewership was up over 40% for game one, and it wasn't even on a normally scheduled date (NBC is always Sunday, Game 1 was Saturday) - PVanderVossen, on 05/05/2009, -3/+34Here is Video of all 6 goals : http://capitalsoutsider.com/2009/05/04/ovechkin-an ...

Amazing. - dysonlu, on 05/05/2009, -4/+29Ovechkin is a sick scorer with the best shot in the history of the sport. He's also the most spectacular and thus, the fan favorite. HOWEVER, Crosby is a more complete player and will get much better -- there's no doubt about this.
Just look at this year's playoffs compared to last year's. He already figured out how to play playoff hockey (incidentally, Malkin hasn't yet). He scores playoff hockey goals, i.e. in front of the goal crease.
Playing the good and strong defensive teams like Detroit, Boston and Anaheim, you'll have to play that kind of hockey if you hope to win. Ovechkin is more likely to be shut down by those teams who don't offer odd man rushes and have a good PK.
I like both players by the way. - thespiff, on 05/05/2009, -4/+23Can the Penguins have a star goal scorer that doesn't get branded as "whiny"? Just because Penguins stars are finesse players and not big hitters doesn't make them whiny.

- MBHockey, on 05/05/2009, -3/+19yeah, I wouldn't compare basketball with hockey either. basketball is too slow and boring, comprised of players who don't care about the game.
- brakes4turtles, on 05/05/2009, -2/+18Hockey's making a comeback and it's because people really like seeing Alex play.
- AmazingSteve, on 05/05/2009, -1/+16That wasn't a hockey game. It was a "How to.." show.
- mudpuddle, on 05/05/2009, -0/+13I'm a Sharks fan and I'm still crying in my shower
- JethroSoulja, on 05/05/2009, -0/+12I agree with you completely. Hard to find hockey fans that understand the Ovechkin vs. Crosby debate intelligently.
- Jeffler, on 05/05/2009, -3/+14Hooray for stalkers!
- Jeffler, on 05/05/2009, -2/+12I hate Crosby, but a hat trick is a hat trick. He played incredible, and this is the side of Crosby that is likeable.
Now if only he'd focus on the game, and if the league would acknowledge the existence of Evgeni Malkin... - Laiden, on 05/05/2009, -2/+11I see what you did there.
- juicycutlets, on 05/05/2009, -0/+9dugg for Hockey, the greatest sport on the planet.
- sgerwel1985, on 05/05/2009, -2/+10What a great series so far, even as a pens fan i can't say i am entirely upset. I think this could be a tale of 2 cities, by that i mean home ice advantage might be the biggest factor between these 2 teams. We could very well see the pens and caps 2-2 going back to washington.
- Delita, on 05/05/2009, -0/+8Ovechkin and Crosby are 2 of the foremost reasons to be paying attention to playoff hockey this year. Both of them are superstars and are absolutely incredible to watch.
- mustard333, on 05/28/2009, -2/+10I'm a Bruins fan, but I admire the way Ovechkin and Crosby play the game.
- Mystlyfe, on 05/05/2009, -1/+852% of NHL players say Crosby complains more on the ice than any other player
http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/news/story?page=0809 ... - schwab002, on 05/05/2009, -0/+7wtf are talking about? Malkin is absolutely in the same league of players as Crosby and Ovechkin. Have you watched Malkin play at all?
some regular season stats:
Malkin: 242 games played, 304 points
Ovechkin: 324 games played, 420 points
Crosby: 290 games played, 397 points
Those are fairly similar stats. Any over a point per game pace is incredible, especially over multiple seasons. The one thing that sets one of those three players apart from the others is that more than half of Ovechkins points are goals. About two thirds of Malkin's and Crosby's points are assists. Also, Ovechkin also is among the league leader for hits every year as well, which is really impressive since that stat is usually led by checking forwards or defensive defensemen...not elite snipers. Also, Ovechkins playmaking ability is often overlooked. He's so feared when he has the puck, his linemates get extra space that he often takes advantage of with his overlooked passing ability. - ngmcs8203, on 05/05/2009, -8/+15Crosby is a whiny pussy.
- PrimetimeFool, on 05/05/2009, -4/+10Are there ANY Crosby fans out there?
Ovechkin is great, don't get me wrong, but the only reason he has as many goals is because he shoots the puck MORE THAN TWICE as much as Crosby (and that's just on goal). If Crosby drove straight to the net, diving all around and shooting the puck on his knees all the time instead of passing when it's the sensible thing to do, he'd probably have a lot more highlights as well.
Ovechkin's a hot shot and unfortunately, that's all it takes to make everyone love you in sports these days. To me, it's like preferring Terrell Owens because he complains about not getting enough passes and does a dance after every catch, over Larry Fitzgerald, who obviously has the talent, but doesn't stand out as much in the media because he understands he's playing a team sport. Sorry to be a grumpy old man, but I preferred it when athletes didn't have to be all about themselves to make people like them.
Now get off my lawn. - TriviallyTravis, on 05/05/2009, -0/+6Dave Steckel scored the other goal in the game.
- LeMAD, on 05/05/2009, -4/+10Basketball is dead. It's about as entertaining as MLS soccer these days.
- LemonMachete, on 05/05/2009, -7/+13How the ***** can you call Crosby an attention whore after what Ovechkin did at the all star game and his 50th goal celebration?
He's an amazing player, get over yourself you tool. - Jeffler, on 05/05/2009, -2/+8He's definitely not an attention whore, he's actually incredibly bland. I think the proper term would be to say the NHL is whoring Crosby and only Crosby for attention, which is retarded.
- Jeffler, on 05/05/2009, -1/+7lolwut
- elipabst, on 05/05/2009, -5/+10And you're comparing him to Alexander "hey everybody look at me" Ovechkin? Maybe he can do another "endzone" dance when he scores in the next game. Talk about an attention whore....
- JethroSoulja, on 05/05/2009, -0/+5You should probably get out before your computer shorts.
- ezmac, on 05/05/2009, -0/+5of course he gets fed the puck a lot because he has an accurate outside shot, but if you watch him, actually watch him play, he is an extremely good puck handler. look at the goals scored tonight between ovechkin and crosby. ovechkins were 2 well placed shots from the outside and the third resulting from his puck handling. crosby's were all rebound goals from just standing in front of the net, waiting to pick up some trash.
- Hockey13, on 05/05/2009, -0/+5Yes, but Ovechkin is playing awesome "playoff hockey" now. With his tremendous shot and ability to keep the puck away from the defenseman's stick (Gonchar's even), he was able to earn that last goal. His awesome leg work to set himself up for the one-timer far enough to the left that he'd have space to the left of Fleury earned him the second goal. Great passes set him up for the first. He forechecks incessantly, wearing out defenders. He's a consummate "striker."
He fits his role perfectly and this year he has the teammates to make him look even better. And I'm a die-hard Devils fan...I'm jealous of the Capitals. - ngmcs8203, on 05/05/2009, -0/+5Green did not look like a Norris defenseman tonight.
- bstew22, on 05/05/2009, -0/+5the NHL exec's are crying with joy over this series right now. These two games so far have been exceptional.
I hope this goes to 7. [edit]: ....goes to game 7 and triple OT. - skersh, on 05/05/2009, -0/+5That'll be a great trivia question one day.
- hakkola, on 05/05/2009, -0/+4Yeah, he dove a minute later too, when someone touched his leg and he fell on his ass.
At least Crosby plays D, and kills penalties, and is a team player. Ovie has one of the worst shots in the league, in the playoffs his shooting % before yesterday's game was 6.8%, It's maybe 7. something now. Crosby's is closer to 20%.
That said, I like both players. - robinthehood, on 05/05/2009, -0/+4ya Ovechkin is one dimensional. I mean, all he does is score goals in droves, I mean really. That's kinda useless.
- vegx, on 05/05/2009, -1/+5@DiggityCarl
Ovechkin was crying for calls several times last night, including after that blatant dive at the end of the second. But people don't seem to care when Ovechkin does it, only when Crosby does. - Jeffler, on 05/05/2009, -3/+7Disagreed. Ovechkin IMHO is a more complete player, he just has the stigma that he isn't due to his nationality. He doesn't backcheck much, but neither does Sid. He also doesn't have the best shot in history of the sport. Hell, he doesn't even have the best shot at the moment. Chara has a better Slapper, Kovalchuk has a better Snapper, and Semin has a better Wrister. Even all around, Kovalchuk's shot is probably better, and I don't like Kovalchuk that much (Ovy is my favourite player).
This is no knock on Crosby's ability though...of all the playmakers in the league he's by far the best goal scorer. But his forechecking doesn't give him the edge because Ovy prides himself on that too, frequently in the top 10 in hits because of it.
Also, Malkin has absolutely shown he's a playoff performer, as last season he lead the league in playoff scoring until the finals, which we later found out was due to a flu AND a concussion.
For the record, I dislike Crosby's personality but enjoy his play, and if my post seems to be a bit pro-Russian, its mere coincidence, I'm Canadian. - Coffeedemon, on 05/05/2009, -0/+4Agree. He is a good goal scorer but was not much of a defenceman last night. He let Crosby get away with two garbage goals.
- dysonlu, on 05/05/2009, -0/+4No. You must be a hater or a fanboy. Please choose.
- dysonlu, on 05/05/2009, -0/+4A good defensive and smart team would not let Ovechkin out there unmarked, freely taking one-timers -- it's just unthinkable. The Pens' defense was garbage tonight.
I'm not saying Ovechkin's goals were not amazing because they were. I'm just saying that the better teams would not offer those kinds of scoring chances in the playoffs knowing how dangerous Overchkin is. So, most goals in the playoff scored against top teams happen in front of the goal crease -- those "garbage goals". If the Capitals were to play the Redwings, Ducks or Bruins, Ovechkin better know how to "pick up the trash"... - DiggityCarl, on 05/05/2009, -1/+5easy with the "whiny" comment. I'm still wondering why Ovie was rolling around on the ice, holding his face until he got the high stick call that he was looking for. Maybe he's working on an acting career for when he retires?
- iMiXiMi, on 05/05/2009, -0/+4Jeez jeff, i think he likes you
