- skinflute, on 06/05/2008, -3/+16- So is it true that if a player keeps it at his house, you have to stay there, too?
- We're there the whole time, yeah. People ask, "What if a player wants to sleep with it?" I say, "Move over." - drguerra, on 06/05/2008, -1/+9I saw the Stanley cup behind some plexiglass, and let me tell you, it was perhaps the most gorgeous looking cup or trophy I'd ever seen. Shined incredibly bright, perfectly pristine. I think if it had been around when Jesus was alive, it would be the Holy Grail, even though it's huge.
- dbarefoot, on 06/05/2008, -1/+8Hmm...any self-respecting hockey fan knows all those stories and facts.
They skipped a good one: it's been at the bottom of a swimming pool (Mario Lemieux's, if I recall correctly). - SnapETom, on 06/05/2008, -0/+5So that's the guy. I was hanging out with a nephew of a friend who served in Afghanistan when the Cup went there. He said that they made it very clear that you can take pictures, put a shirt on it, drink out of it, whatever. However, you absolutely cannot hoist it over your head. They were told that the security guy will tackle you if it looks like you're even close to hoisting it. Like it says in the article, and like they were warned, you have to earn the right to hoist it.
- fapfaptrain, on 06/05/2008, -0/+4And Patrick Roy's. And Dominik Hasek's.
- mcphatty, on 06/05/2008, -3/+7must be a bunch of pittsburgh fans digging me down :*(
- diggerpleez, on 06/05/2008, -1/+5I was at a party in 99 where it was tossed off a second floor balcony into a pool. If you look at the pictures from the parade in Dallas, you will see a fresh dent in it from that toss the night before.
- diggerpleez, on 06/05/2008, -0/+3Unfortunately we didn't carry picture phones around in 99 (or even digi cams), but a quick google search will show you that it did indeed happen, unless we all schemed up this idea just to fool *****. As odd as it sounds, the only pics I have seen of that party were polaroids... wtfpolaroids man

- mcphatty, on 06/05/2008, -14/+16LETS GO RED WINGS! WOOO!
- HappyScrappy, on 06/05/2008, -0/+2I saw it at a hockey game. I was at a Sharks game and it was just there. They said it tours all the arenas during the season and it just happened to be there that day.
It sure does look great. They were letting people take their picture with it, and many took advantage. It was weird that here's a crowd of 16,000 and there was very little crowd control for it, just some ropes to stand behind. It was in an area on the main concourse where everyone mills around by the concession stand.
It's a cool cup. And I think the NHL is very wise to allow all the weirdness with people drinking out of it (or even putting bait in it as mentioned in the article) and such. It really adds to the legend that it had to be fished out of a swimming pool.

Scroll down to Misadventures. This has a large list of Cup stories. They are better than this list, i highly suggest anybody who enjoyed or even didn't enjoy this list to check out this wiki.
God i love the cup. I just hope i'm still around when my team finally brings it home. - supermanred, on 06/22/2008, -0/+1Nope, you can't hoist it. A former cup winner can hoist it. That's about it. It's also like you said about not having it "hoisted" by too many people, and once one person hoists it, everyone wants to. It will damage the trophy.
Personally, I would love to keep the minnows in it during a fishing trip, that would be awesome. - supermanred, on 06/22/2008, -0/+1You're brain is broken.
- mugsy88, on 06/09/2008, -0/+0I love reading stuff like this!
- supermanred, on 06/22/2008, -1/+1It was also tossed off the side of the building by Spader and Shatner on Boston Legal (though Im sure it actually landed on a nice safe coushin off camera)
- supermanred, on 06/22/2008, -1/+1William Shatner also drank from it off camera during a filiming of an episode of Boston Legal that featured the cup.
- mykinco, on 06/06/2008, -1/+1Just make sure no one plays two girls one Stanley Cup!
- HappyScrappy, on 06/05/2008, -3/+3You can hoist if it you want, if you ask first and they give you permission. Note you are likely not to get permission depending on you are and the circumstances.
The "can't hoist it if you don't earn it" thing is something the players started themselves and enforce on a personal basis. The legend is if you touch the Stanley Cup without winning it you'll never win it. So active players (or potential future coaches) who have not won it will not touch it.
In the case of Afghanistan, no disrespect to our soldiers, but they likely wouldn't let one person of a large group hoist it because then everyone else in the group will want to hoist it and it'll be a huge hassle, take forever and people will start horsing around.
And if you're asking, no, I haven't hoisted it, or even lifted it off the table it was on. I did get my picture with it at a game once though. - bucks007, on 12/17/2008, -0/+0Lord Stanley's cup is in it's rightful home right now. Detroit.
http://www.1hockeytownnation.info - fapfaptrain, on 06/05/2008, -2/+1No kid ever forgets the first time he touches the cup. I remember it was 11 years ago, I was 5, and I saw my very first Leaf's game at MLG, I saw one more game there before they closed her down. We had some spare time, so we went over to BCE Place and saw all the exhibits, and all I was interested in was the Cup. When I touched it, It was the greatest moment of my kidhood.
- ronfez, on 06/05/2008, -4/+3Outragous? I was expecting tales of girls and/or guys being doggie styled over the cup.
