- OasisR123, on 11/08/2009, -0/+37I had never seen the second video (another goalkeeper's throat cut) that is way too scary
- Jaizu, on 11/09/2009, -0/+25Imagine how he felt for the 5 seconds where no one saw that he was hurt. The two team were fighting behind the net and he was losing all his blood powerless. It all happened so fast...
- rpieszak, on 11/09/2009, -0/+21I remember the Malarchuk injury. Let me rephrase.. I'll never forget the Malarchuk injury.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clint_Malarchuk
From the link: "Malarchuk's life was saved by Pizzutelli, a former army medic who had served in Vietnam. He reached into Malarchuk's neck and pinched off the bleeding, not letting go until doctors arrived to begin suturing the wound."
That's freakin' hardcore. - IamTheJman, on 11/09/2009, -0/+17I remember the Malarchuk incident. I was so scared that he was going to die. I think everyone was. And here is a nice photo that was once hanging up in my college's art gallery.

Ward is a really good goalie and needed some time to get his game back together, this injury is such a shame as it will take him tons of time to come back, the Canes will deeply feel the effect. Glad to hear he's okay though, that's the main thing after all is said and done
- MrZop, on 11/09/2009, -1/+11He was going past the goalie and was being pressured by two players and his skate just barely clipped him.
Don't make this out to be some crazy "Running the goalie" situation. - Brak710101, on 11/09/2009, -0/+9No one really knows the exact injury it seems, but but it looks like the upwards motion of Rick Nash's right skate mid-fall gets Ward's left thigh pretty good.
I'm a goalie myself, and I cringe every time I see these videos. The fact that Ward just froze and sat there meant he was pretty freaked out by it happening, usually players try to get to the bench or yell for a ref. - Brak710101, on 11/09/2009, -0/+5Wasn't Nash's fault. Injuries happen, and someone getting cut -especially a goalie- is merely a freak accident.
- DaviDTC, on 11/09/2009, -0/+4They didn't mention Richard Zednik? Happened Feb 08.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2L0_LGblKGk - mcwattersm, on 11/09/2009, -1/+5Ah man I thought a goalie's helmet cam got smashed or something.
- RT100, on 11/09/2009, -0/+3that picture is extremely disturbing
- bfogarty27, on 11/09/2009, -0/+3they have the plastic addition at the bottom on some, or the wrap around pads.
just imagine playing back in the beginning when they didnt even wear helmets - misterparry, on 11/09/2009, -0/+3As scary as that can be I still love me some hockey!
- vanguardanon, on 11/09/2009, -0/+2There are actually two devices you can use. One is a plastic shield that pretty much zip ties to the cage and hangs below it. The other is kind of like a forehead sweat band but it's thick, filled with gel, and it goes around your neck.
They aren't very popular though. Most guys just count on their awareness to keep them out of trouble. That works most of the time but not always. - indoracer, on 11/09/2009, -1/+3North Carolina (Reuters) - Carolina Hurricanes netminder Cam Ward will be out for a minimum of three to four weeks after his left upper leg was lacerated by an opponent's skate on Saturday, the NHL team said on Sunday.
Get better soon. - angrytortilla, on 11/09/2009, -0/+2Scary moment for Cam Ward, especially with his confusion about where he was cut. I'm sure he thought the worst, and by worst I don't mean the femoral artery, but the Cam Ward Family Jewels.
Get well soon, buddy. - inactive, on 11/09/2009, -0/+2I don't know if you've watched any of this season but there has been a ***** tonne of running the goalie going on, I'm not talking specifically about this video, it was in no way the players fault.
- IamNOTmrT, on 11/09/2009, -0/+2I'd never seen that either. I didn't read the description properly and I thought it would be another leg cut like the one above and almost fainted when I saw it. I can't beleive he survived that.
- chriscim, on 11/09/2009, -0/+2I'd never seen the Malarchuk video...I have to say that was pretty disturbing and is probably going to be etched in my memory for awhile.
- canadabluesfan, on 11/09/2009, -0/+1The Malarchuk cut makes me cringe everytime I see it. I hope Ward can get back to shape soon, carolina needs him.
- Brak710101, on 11/09/2009, -0/+1I think he knew it was his thigh, that's why he didn't want to move at all.
- Rev0lver, on 11/09/2009, -0/+1Get better, Wardo. Carolina will only get better with your return.
- CkMaverick, on 11/09/2009, -0/+1http://blog.dispatch.com/cbj/2009/11/ward_remains_ ...
It was a lacerated muscle in his left thigh. He has already undergone surgery, but is expected to be out for a "fairly long period of time" according to their GM. - WinWinWin, on 11/09/2009, -1/+2I sure hope the dude is okay and can recover to continue playing the sport he loved.
I suppose every sport has some level of risk involved, you could count up the ways a player risks serious injury or even death in just about every sport and be surprised even when weighing the odds how high the probability can still be. With hockey we can spare no exception, it should seem obvious you know. Big ass sticks with fairly sharp edges being wielded about to hit a puck that isn't forgiving to any object that gets in the way of its path. Obviously magnified by the strength of the players behind those objects who play with such intensity that it sometimes leads to all-out brawling, much to the joy and encouragement of the fans. Oh yeah, and the large steel blades on the end of their feet that have been proven in the past, and in this case to have no aversion to slicing right to through flesh when the opportunity presents itself. You gotta have big balls to play hockey. - vicsvenge, on 11/20/2009, -0/+1I used to use the gel neck guard when I played. Didn't do squat for getting popping with a puck but it would definitely stop a skate. Those plastic shields on the bottom of goalie helmets are so ungodly irritating. It's distorts everything in front of you so if the puck is anywhere in the vicinity you can't see it. It's annoying.

- SuperMoses, on 11/10/2009, -0/+1Don't forget Richard Zednik's carotid artery cut by a skate last year. What was pretty horrible to watch as well.
- sgerwel1985, on 11/09/2009, -0/+1yo matteao620, i know you think this is still funny and imma let you finish. But i just wanted to let you know this wasn't even funny the first time someone did it... Come up with something original.
- LordStandley, on 11/09/2009, -0/+1*****, he's on my fantasy team. Hopefully he's ok.
- sgerwel1985, on 11/09/2009, -0/+1I have played the sport for a good bit, and i have seen only a few of these type of incidents. I mean for the most part, players and goalies are padded up pretty well. However, strange things happen. Hope cam has a speedy recovery and i hope this doesn't screw up his Olympic bid.
- swiftyzz, on 11/09/2009, -0/+1Matteao go FU*K yourseld
- Rikushix, on 11/09/2009, -0/+1Was watching Sportscentre tonight, they said he'll be out an estimated 4-6 weeks.
- DaviDTC, on 11/09/2009, -0/+1Didn't notice. Looked it up and it is the Canadian version.
- MrMongoose, on 11/09/2009, -0/+1Sports 'Centre'? Heh.
- itschop, on 11/09/2009, -2/+2They should make helmets that cover the neck.
- WillisDickfit, on 11/09/2009, -3/+2That was an unfortunate injury, and certainly not anything you would want to happen to anyone. But it also wasn't quite on the level of Malarchuk...
- Puppytwo, on 11/09/2009, -2/+1Well maybe he running the goalie?
- Puppytwo, on 11/09/2009, -6/+2Yo Cam Ward Ima let you finish, but Clint Malarchuck had one of the best cuts of all time!
- centran, on 11/09/2009, -7/+1I know the typical stereotype of hockey players is hard ass and cocky and I am sure the player who caused the injury kept on playing. However, if I caused that injury(even though it was an accident) I am not sure I would be able to jump right back into the game.
- inactive, on 11/09/2009, -9/+2I had this happen to me when I played, player drove the net and actually cut my back with his skate somehow... It is a very ***** thing to happen and part of the reason I think this running the goalie ***** needs to be fixed.
Thanks Bettman, you dick. - Matteao620, on 11/09/2009, -14/+2Yo Cam, I know you got cut and all, and imma let you finish, but Richard Zednick had the best throat slice of all time.
