- Fixhotep, on 06/05/2009, -7/+77I, for one, am thoroughly enjoying the hockey playoffs far more than the NBA...
- kinseyincanada, on 06/05/2009, -2/+46why the hell do Americans not like hockey? Its an amazing game, its fast paced, theres hitting, good sportsman ship, no giant egos, and the US has some great teams that you can follow.
- zero, on 06/05/2009, -5/+44NBC should just buy the rights to all NHL games and get it off the horrible VS network. VS is the worst thing to happen to hockey since the glowing puck...and Gary Bettman
- robEstyles, on 06/05/2009, -2/+31More people watch hockey please
Thank you - buxmeister, on 06/05/2009, -2/+25It's about time.
Either NBC or please ESPN come back.
VS is terrible, announcers god awful. I've actually watched the games on Justin.tv if I can get a CBC feed. - Nlewis4, on 06/05/2009, -1/+24because all they know about hockey is puck goes in net. and when that happens only a handful of times a game they think it's boring since they don't understand what is happening on the ice.
I am an american and I don't even live in a hockey (NHL) town and hockey is my favorite sport - BoneStamp, on 06/05/2009, -1/+23I wish I could get CBC in the US.
- kick, on 06/05/2009, -2/+23NBC just needs to rebroadcast the CBC feed.
- SailRacer, on 06/05/2009, -5/+16I'm all for NBC carrying the NHL if they:
1. Increase the number of games they carry
2. Get better analysts
3. Instruct their announcers to try harder to be impartial
4. Cease to be the Nuthin' But Crosby network. - SailRacer, on 06/05/2009, -1/+10ESPN HATES hockey. They actively avoid covering it. You'll see more stories about disadvantages youths who committed crimes then had their lives saved thanks to football than you will hockey coverage.
- mcgoogins, on 06/05/2009, -0/+8I am a Blackhawks season ticketholder and the buzz in the city was bigger than anyone could imagine. I could see the difference when visiting Boston as well.
Though TB, Carolina, and Anaheim iced great teams during their championship seasons, the big markets need to have solid teams as well. - froston, on 06/05/2009, -2/+10ESPN! Versus is getting a little better but still crappy. The NHL needs more coverage on Sportscenter, PTI, and all the other ESPN Shows...and I'm sure getting on that network would help things.
Versus has 2 things going for it.
1. Announcer Doc Emrick is great.
2. They use Explosions in the Sky as their background music in their commercials.
PS. Gary B. sucks. - roguewriter, on 06/05/2009, -2/+10If more people could watch CBC, NFL fans would start crying at how CBC copied Football Night in America with Hockey Night in Canada. /sarcasm.
Seriously though, Pro Hockey has more action, more drama, and a faster pace game than other pro sports, without most of the egos, criminal charges and poor sportsmanship evident in the other major pro sports. - inactive, on 06/05/2009, -1/+9I miss watching hockey on broadcast TV :(
Please buy the rights to NHL games NBC, doing so might actually give you decent ratings. - shoelessschippa, on 06/05/2009, -0/+7I never liked it until a few years ago when i went to my first game (Michigan Tech vs. Northern Michigan) and it blew me away how awesome the sport is. It seriously is the best professional sport in north America.
- alx1507, on 06/05/2009, -8/+15Here in Detroit I get CBC over the air and on cable :)
(Go Redwings!) - predatorpasta, on 06/05/2009, -1/+8The fact that ratings are up is great but we can all admit this would be a better story if you replaced NBC with ESPN. The only way hockey has a shot at legitimacy in the U.S is if a major sports network carries their games. I don't want to be a downer but Versus is not a major sports network.
The NHL should offer to put their games on ESPN for free at this point strictly for the exposure. The playoffs this year have been amazing but without ESPN carrying the games; few Americans know about it. - chrisgnv, on 06/05/2009, -0/+6You do realize the VS announcers for the Cup are the same as the NBC announcers? Both stations are using Emrick and Edzo. I prefer VS, as I don't have to hear Pierre McGuire run his mouth.
- KibblesnBitts, on 06/05/2009, -1/+7No. Just no.
- myempyrean, on 06/05/2009, -0/+6As long as theres no Pierre McGuire I'll be happy. I hate that wiener kid.
- bahamutxd, on 06/05/2009, -0/+6As long as 'I'm a celebrity, get me out of here' doesn't interfere anymore.
- Wreckage, on 06/05/2009, -1/+7I live near enough to Canukistan that I can watch Don Cherry commentary and not have to watch VS.
Although the Wings do look good in HD on NBC. - docbron, on 06/05/2009, -0/+6The problem with that is NBC ONLY shows weekend games -- at least VS can broadcast weekdays during primetime.
- jrod03, on 06/05/2009, -0/+6pierre mcguire needs a coaching job desperately so that we dont have to listen to the ***** stream out of his mouth!
- skeletorcares, on 06/05/2009, -0/+5LETS! GO! HAWKS!
DE! TROIT! SUCKS! - shoelessschippa, on 06/05/2009, -0/+5yup and its great!
- BoneStamp, on 06/05/2009, -0/+4And before somebody corrects me, I know that you can get it in border cities (ex. Detroit) due to over-the-air/rebroadcast regulations.
- winmywii, on 06/05/2009, -1/+5I prefer the VS games over NBC, but will always watch the local FSN games if I can.
- metallimus, on 06/05/2009, -0/+4NBC should carry 4 games a weekend: an early and late game on both Saturdays and Sundays. They could go straight from NHL coverage to NFL coverage during the football season. I also wish they would do more for the NHL playoffs. VS is OK for those of us that get it, but NBC is more ideal for the NHL, and I would wager, the NBC once it's clearly established as the NHL playoff partner.
I know exactly where to find the key MLB playoff games: FOX. I cannot say the same for the NHL. NBC could corner that market now, as there is no real competition for it, and ratings are almost sure to go up a tad, just because people would know where to watch the darn games. - foofightrs777, on 06/05/2009, -0/+4"it's fast paced"
That. There's not constant downtime (see: baseball and football) where people can get their 64 ounce cola, $9 light beer, and nachos.
That said, I'm an American and I love my hockey, baseball, and football (both types)! - mikeas, on 06/06/2009, -0/+4Whats wrong with VS? They are willing to play hockey several nights a week where as NBC only plays it on weekends when they aren't showing reality tv or dumb ass shows.
- brutalist, on 06/05/2009, -0/+3 Great game deserves national coverage.
- winmywii, on 06/05/2009, -2/+5good sportsman ship, no giant egos
That's why. They want T.O. - shoelessschippa, on 06/05/2009, -3/+6Yeah im pretty sick of hearing about Crosby. The Red Wings won last year and all they could talk about was Crosby, same for this year.
...Go Wings! - BryanG412, on 06/05/2009, -17/+20Let's Go Pens!
- Rhythmix, on 06/05/2009, -0/+3CBC is great! I watched VS one time and man they're like a talking teleprompter, just horrible commentating.
- acehorne, on 06/05/2009, -1/+4Does this mean NBC will actually televise more than the Winter Classic, a handful of regular season Ranger games, and a few Stanley Cup final games? I'd rather have the type of consistent coverage ESPN had before the lockout even if NBC forced me to endure the god awful Star Cam or the stupid computer rendered puck-comet-tail-thing that killed the hockey watching experience in the past.
- cquilliam, on 06/05/2009, -1/+4Come on Bettman, at least get some money up front from NBC, enough with this revenue-sharing crap. I understand that the exposure may help, but you've been doing this since the lockout!
- jayrod422, on 06/06/2009, -0/+3im a pens fan and have to agree with you guys on this.. why is it all crosby when malkin is the dominant player on the pens?
- Khanvalescent, on 06/05/2009, -0/+3ESPN doesn't have an agenda besides increasing viewership and thereby enticing more advertisers.
Hockey is largely a regional sport, and a good portion of the country has little to no exposure to it while growing up. As such, this portion of the country is largely apathetic towards hockey when adults, which is not a hot market for ESPN. - cquilliam, on 06/05/2009, -0/+2I won't correct you, but, if you can get your hands on a Canadian proxy, you can watch it online at cbcsports.ca. I'd help you out, but i have no idea how to setup a proxy in windows, and my linux partition's hard drive has kaput.
- CanuckPenguin, on 06/05/2009, -0/+2I was so glad to see he was chosen for the finals. Just wish he did the early games during the regular season.
- nevaseez, on 06/05/2009, -0/+2Datsyuk is in my opinion the best puck handler in the game, if stays out, the pens might just win this one!
however next game is at home and osgood's 10-1 @ home, and 4-5 on the road for the playoffs..... - arplayer2k, on 06/07/2009, -0/+2They whined their way to 5-0. Ha-ha-ha.
- winmywii, on 06/05/2009, -1/+3"was on the camping network"
- Littledevil8701, on 06/06/2009, -0/+2RED WINGS TAKE IT IN 6!!!!!
GO WINGS!!!!!!!!!!!! - aychseven, on 06/06/2009, -0/+2Amen, brother! Ken and Mick are some of the best announcers for hockey on TV. And out of all the FSN home team announcers, they seem to be some of the least biased and really call it like it is. Wings in 6!
- Coercion, on 06/06/2009, -1/+3Sidney Crosby > Kobe Bryant
- tmanv, on 06/05/2009, -1/+3Yeah... The only thing keeping me on cable is sports, everything else I tend to watch online anyway..
- Coreyc150, on 06/06/2009, -0/+2only have NBC cover more games if you are going to hire Mike Lange and Phil Borque, and put Bob Errey down between the benches every game
