- MarkBrent, on 06/20/2009, -1/+35Glad it's not Celine Dion.
- mmaine, on 06/20/2009, -1/+33FTA:"to sell the Habs and the Bell Centre"
Bye bye "Bell Centre", welcome back "Molson Center" :-) - Nboy514, on 06/20/2009, -1/+19Now if only they'd stop charging 7$/beer at the games
- shagg187, on 06/21/2009, -0/+11Gives a new meaning to "Molson Canadian!". Rename it to "Molson Canadien!" and you got yourself free marketing!
- bromac, on 06/21/2009, -0/+10Oh, they've had a long time friendship between the two, they're both Montreal icons! Welcome back, Molson Centre!
Once, a Molson brother (not one that bought the team) went out drinking with the Habs. Sometime during the night, he got into some rough words with some bikers.
Of course the Habs came to his rescue, and won the brawl, but the Molson was never mentioned in the papers later...apparently it's bad to risk injuring your multi-million dollar hockey team. - techdogg, on 06/21/2009, -1/+117$/beer? When was the last time you were there? Beer at the Bell Centre starts at 8.50$ a pop. And I don't see the prices going down either. If we're lucky they'll just stay the same.
- Charlie1er, on 06/20/2009, -1/+10Great news for the sport!!
- brownsound00, on 06/21/2009, -1/+10Well, if you guys DON'T beat us, that'd be sad. We (the leafs) suck.
- RiverBelow, on 06/21/2009, -0/+8Digg is a social news website that allows its users to "Digg" stories, by voting on them. A certain algorithm takes into account the volume of "diggs" and the time it takes for them to reach a certain volume of these user votes. Once it hits that volume, it will show up on the front page, that is why this is news.
- ZimbuTheMonkey, on 06/21/2009, -1/+8No, it's the Maple Leafs, I think.
- bakaoni, on 06/21/2009, -0/+7It's news for normal people who enjoy common interests, such as sport.
I'm sorry it wasn't yet another "year of the Linux desktop" article. - darthsand, on 06/21/2009, -7/+13Get ready to be beat you dammed Toronto Maple *****.
- kingofinternet, on 06/21/2009, -1/+6wow, the molsons are like the medicis of montreal.
- jfield1, on 06/21/2009, -0/+5I'm sure that would turn out well.
- ChileanGoD, on 06/21/2009, -0/+4....please fire Bob.... please fire Bob.... please fire Bob....
- AROZ, on 06/21/2009, -0/+4No, you guys will get owned. And even if do beat the Leafs, you'll probably get swept in the first round of the playoffs or something.
- Jeffler, on 06/21/2009, -0/+4No, its more the fact he'd be selling Liverpool at a loss if he sold right now. The Habs on the other hand are an immense profit.
- bakaoni, on 06/21/2009, -0/+3To put her to sleep?
- dhughes, on 06/21/2009, -0/+3 A lot of Canadians have a "Molson Center" if-ya-know-what-I-mean! ;)
- Jeffler, on 06/21/2009, -1/+4Key difference is that the Habs are on their way down and the Leafs are a few years into a rebuild.
Besides, if we want to bring this into a matter of business, its rumored that the Ontario Teachers Pension Plan rejected an offer of $750M a few years back for the Leafs, and that doesn't even include the ACC. - PrettyGreen, on 06/21/2009, -0/+3But we love our team regardless.
- christof53, on 06/21/2009, -0/+3Molson CentRE, you got it right with the Bell Centre why change it for Molson?
- dc383, on 06/21/2009, -0/+3They should have one game per year where they give FREE BEER to the crowd.
- daridave, on 06/21/2009, -0/+3BTW, some facts about the Montreal Canadiens and George Gillett:
- He bought it for ~275 M.
- Sold it for ~ 550 M. [the 500 in the title is inaccurate.]
- Montreal Canadiens generated ~ 288 M in 2007-08
- Profits of 45 M in 2007-08
- 2008-09 profits are expected to be much higher due to centenary year.
- The Bell Center has been "sold out" every single game since 2005.
- He is selling the team because he is having very serious monetary issues.
Anyone who questions the value of the Canadiens team, the Montreal hockey market or George Gillett's deception to "have" to sell the team is a fool. - graemee, on 06/21/2009, -1/+4It's not just cost. 5% vs 3% alcohol content, so one Canadian beer is like almost 2 US beer.
- bakaoni, on 06/21/2009, -0/+2I want to know how much it cost them by not keeping the team. There's got to be some buyer's/seller's remorse.
- theaceoface, on 06/21/2009, -0/+2I like bob gainey... as a person... please fire bob
- daridave, on 06/21/2009, -0/+2He's very sad to sell the team. He loves the Montreal Canadiens. He's just stuck financially.
- levitron, on 06/22/2009, -0/+2You're doing it wrong...
It's, "Koo **Loo** koo koo koo koo koo koooooo!" (The "Loo" may also be acceptably replaced with "Roo.") - Jeffler, on 06/21/2009, -0/+2No. The Molson company has owned 20% of the Canadiens for several decades now. At the same time, these buyers are just members of the Molson family, they have no affiliation with the company anymore.
- Jeffler, on 06/21/2009, -0/+2Again, this is the family buying it, not the company. It won't be named the Molson Centre, I can more or less assure you of that.
- jdubu37, on 06/21/2009, -2/+3Molsons is the *****
- theaceoface, on 06/21/2009, -0/+1I'm glad the Molson's are the owners again. They have made, and will make, wonderful stewards.
- shlebede, on 06/21/2009, -0/+1Bell gave money to have the arena named after the company (horrible, horrible company). If the Molsons wanted to change it, they'd have to give the money back. I don't think it's worth it.
- vedema, on 06/21/2009, -1/+2$7 CAD or USD? I'd gladly pay $7 CAD, they're $7.50 USD at Verizon Center.
- LordByr0n, on 06/21/2009, -0/+1I've been saying that for years!
- AROZ, on 06/21/2009, -0/+1That's good to hear because no one truly likes Bell.
- Jeffler, on 06/21/2009, -0/+1Its actually the Molson family buying it, and they have no stake in the company anymore (however, the company has has a 20% stake in the Canadiens for years).
- inactive, on 06/21/2009, -0/+1What? Major label beers like Molson and Budweiser are about the same in therms of alcohol content.
- Fw7X0, on 06/21/2009, -0/+1From Molson to Bell, now back to Molson.=S
- mdaize, on 06/21/2009, -1/+2We all know they'll keep it as is or increase it slightly, guess they wanted to increase that profit margin....
- strategy, on 06/21/2009, -1/+1don't they also own some of the leafs?
- ChileanGoD, on 06/21/2009, -2/+2I -dont-know-what-you-mean.
- inactive, on 06/21/2009, -2/+2GODDAMNIT YOU DON'T PUT A PERIOD AFTER THE QUESTION MARK. YOU HAVE PISSED OF MY INNER GRAMMAR NAZI SO MUCH THAT HE HAS FORCED ME TO USE MY CAPS LOCK KEY. I HATE CAPS LOCK ALMOST AS MUCH AS I HATE YOUR COMMENT. I HOPE YOU ARE HAPPY *****.
- twixt01, on 06/21/2009, -1/+1Isnt it named Centre Bell and canadiAns?
- ncsifsf08, on 06/21/2009, -3/+3Nice purchase Ahh
- bakaoni, on 06/21/2009, -1/+1Well, at one time if you bought a smoked meat sandwich and ate it, then gave her a nickel, another smoked meat sandwich would appear in it's place.
- dhughes, on 06/21/2009, -1/+1 I did it too and it is a pet peeve although I've noticed people in the US usually put center for the center of something and also for institutions but in Canada it's center for the middle and centre for institutions etc.. I prefer 'centre' for buildings, organizations, institutions.
- cryinlion85, on 06/21/2009, -2/+1that's funny because i was gonna say, they had beer AND money and they traded it for a bunch of f***** canadians??
