- musters, on 05/22/2008, -3/+54I think the Russians just wanted the Loonie because the Canadian Dollar is worth so much now.
- ultraJesus, on 05/22/2008, -6/+37For those of you who don't know, a loonie is the Canadian dollar coin, its called that because of the picture of a crazy woman on one side.
- j1ggy, on 05/22/2008, -5/+31These comments are pathetic.
- inactive, on 05/22/2008, -2/+27They won for one reason only... their goalie Nabokov. He absolutely stoned them standing while on his head. The guy is a shoe-in Vezina trophy winner as best goalie in the NHL.
- jezdynamo, on 05/22/2008, -5/+20Ovechkin kicks ass.
- inactive, on 05/22/2008, -8/+22Canada should have won that game, but their coach (Hitchcock) didn't adapt to what the Russians brought in the third. That, and the ref from Sweden was an embarrassment. I don't know why the IIHF had the worst ref of the tournament, officiating the gold metal game.
I think the battle of 2010 will be epic. - Jeffler, on 05/22/2008, -0/+10Good to see digg into hockey to some extent, I'm shocked this game made the FP once, let alone twice! :D
- spud387, on 05/22/2008, -2/+12Even as a Canadian, I Hope the Ice Makers stop putting the Loonie in the ice. Sure it was a good story during Salt Lake, but the "lucky loonie" has run its course.
- Aazlain, on 05/22/2008, -1/+10As opposed to "Cute Puppy Yelps For Elmo". Now who would digg that… ;)
/I kid, I kid off - ngmcs8203, on 05/22/2008, -2/+10Obligatory: Go Sharks!
You're right though, he is a shoe-in for the Vezina. - blofeld9999, on 05/22/2008, -2/+10What, did Canada start putting Hillary Clinton on one side of it?
- BluesFan, on 05/22/2008, -1/+8This means war....cough cough U.S can we borrow a couple of nukes please.
- kingmanic, on 05/22/2008, -1/+7Dollars to Rubles that those Russian players make more then you do!
- spect3r, on 05/22/2008, -1/+7See, now THIS is a reason for Canada to go to war! Screw your terrorists, we've got a reputation to uphold!!! UNLEASH THE MOOSES
- manicmailman, on 05/22/2008, -0/+5this is kind of a tangent, but the glove save he made in OT game 7 vs. dallas was the craziest save i have ever seen.
- rhartman, on 05/22/2008, -2/+7"Loonie" is slang for our $1 coin, so named because it has a picture of a Canadian Loon (similar to a wild goose) on it.
- Appleboi4evr, on 05/22/2008, -2/+7We want our loonie back!
- Jeffler, on 05/22/2008, -2/+6Canadian and that might be the best joke I've heard in a while.
(For those who believed the Crazy Woman bit, its actually because it having a Loon on it) - m3th0dm4n, on 05/22/2008, -0/+3As a fellow Canucks fan, if we don't remember it, it didn't happen :)
- charman2k6, on 05/23/2008, -0/+3The finals should have been played in Halifax; the fans here are electric. I didn't really see any of that in Quebec.
- ngmcs8203, on 05/22/2008, -2/+5I think suckanucka was being sarcastic and making fun of all of the "pro-McCain" spam comments that we've seen lately that have nothing to do with the digg submissions.
- bonezzzz, on 05/22/2008, -0/+3I would have to argue that although nabokov was amazing, the Russian firepower up front of semin, kovalchuck, ovechkin, morozov, radulov, federov (to a degree), and afinogenov all had a little to do with the win
- Kovalchuk71, on 05/23/2008, -0/+3I'd say Kovalchuk had something to do with it too.
Kovalchuk + Nabokov FTW. - Kogut, on 05/23/2008, -0/+3Actually, Russia is paying quite well these days.
http://www.nytimes.com/2008/02/29/sports/hockey/29 ... - Jeffler, on 05/22/2008, -0/+3Morozov makes the most at the equivalent of a $3,000,000 NHL contract. Rumor is Dynamo is offering Jagr $12M this year though...
- supersquiggly, on 05/22/2008, -3/+6It'll only make our victory sweeter next time. Go Team Canada!
- terrencesmith, on 05/22/2008, -3/+6What a great matchup. Too bad they don't play a best of 7 series! In hockey a couple of bad bounces can decide a game. As for the Russians digging up the lucky loonie it just goes to show how much they wanted to beat the No.1 hockey country in the world bar none.
The Olympics will be the true test. When we have all our boys dressed and our best goalie in net. Look out. I don't care if the Russians have 3 Ovechkins... it won't matter if you can't score. Canadian defense is unparalleled. - str1fe, on 05/22/2008, -1/+3It was a nice (scratch that, amazing) save and all, but it was game 6. The Sharks should have won that game, I'm disappointed. I still want my Wings to win the SCF, but I enjoy watching a good game of hockey no matter who's playing.
- Angelspit, on 05/22/2008, -3/+5It is a good thing I knew what a loonie was when I read that last sentence of the headline.
- silentsammy, on 05/22/2008, -1/+3They beat the Canadians in hockey AND stole the lucky loonie!?! Lucky for the russians that the Cannucks never built nukes cause you know they'd be flying over the north pole right now.
- krogothwolf, on 05/22/2008, -0/+2No it isn't. They haven't stolen our beer yet, or our Bacon. Once that happens, we'll have to invade someone. Maybe the British, they won't expect it, or the Netherlands, cause well...they're tiny, our army isn't very big so we need to attack tiny ones. On a side note, I'm glad they stole that stupid Loonie, its been overused. Stupid Loonie
- finista, on 05/22/2008, -0/+2Also he scored all 5 goals for Russians.
- teesix, on 05/22/2008, -2/+4I'd hardly say that losing in overtime is getting owned.
and learn to spell... - Zippo, on 05/23/2008, -0/+2Next year, Russia... NEXT YEAR
- krogothwolf, on 05/22/2008, -0/+2The problem we have is we have an insanely high amount of quality goaltenders, were as each other country usually only has 1 or 2 NHL starters, we have potentially 10 to 15 quality Starters, it makes selecting a goalie for us annoying cause we could pick on doing great, watch him start playing poorly before hand and then go "Well...If they had only selected this goalie instead of that loser, we would have one". When you cant really tell who will be good and who will be bad before a season starts. Luongo is a great goaltender who gets overworked, put some quality D with him and Vancouver would destroy people. Except Calgary, cause ya know, we got kipper and then a whole whack of players who only show up 10% of the time.
- dezman2003, on 05/23/2008, -1/+2I'm glad you're amused, have you considered the possibility that we don't have a military because we don't need one? I mean why buy a gun when your neighbor has a state of the art security system and is so trigger happy to test his toys he kills anyone that even thinks about coming near your place. Seems like a waste of money to me. You have my thanks kind American the money you've saved us give us all free heath care.
- DanOnTheMoon, on 05/24/2008, -0/+1In Soviet Russia, Jokes think of YOU!!
- krogothwolf, on 05/22/2008, -0/+1Great, Now i'm gonna envisions the we Canadians burying retards in ice and Russians madly hacking at the ice to rescue said loonie...thats an awesome image.
- dezman2003, on 05/23/2008, -1/+2That's just what we want you to think, it gives us time to continue building our massive underground army. First we conquer America then the world.
- awa1ct, on 05/23/2008, -0/+1Guess those Canadiens hate that Philly beat them...
- jeriqo, on 05/22/2008, -5/+6You must be new here.
- banderwocky, on 05/25/2008, -0/+1I said nothing on nationality. I merely put forward the question, who in professional sports, "can fly a commercial jet airplane, or insert a needle in someones broken vertabrae and inject it with super glue."?
Served. - MisterChirish, on 05/22/2008, -0/+1Before I have to sit through another screening of "Miracle", please educate us on what it takes to be the "No.1 hockey country in the world bar none".
I'm just dying to hear this...
I don't know if Canada makes the "bar none", but if there's another country's hockey program that has more claim to hockey dominance of late, I'd be more than willing to hear that argument out...
You'd better stick to baseball... - BadseedJR, on 05/22/2008, -1/+2Agreed. Nabokov is a far better goalie than Luongo.
- WalkingAway, on 05/30/2008, -0/+1Soviet Russia is the past actually, didn't you know? Learn world history, that helps sometimes ;)
- manicmailman, on 05/22/2008, -0/+1right it was game 6.. my bad, i wanted sj in that too.. maybe thats why i was thinkin it was game 7... (i think they would have put up more of a fight against the wings)
- d3dm, on 05/22/2008, -2/+3Gee, if Canada were truely the "No. 1 hockey country in the world bar none" as you say, you'd think that the Stanley Cup would have resided there once or twice in the last 15 years, eh?
Oh, and before you go on a rampage about the NHL teams in the US being composed mainly of canucks, I'm not saying that it's because the Canadian NHL teams lack talented players, but it takes more than talented players to be the "No 1. hockey country in the world bar none." - DanOnTheMoon, on 05/24/2008, -0/+1In Soviet Russia, luck steals YOU!!
- nfkiller, on 05/22/2008, -1/+2Bigger tv markets and more revenue allows you to afford the better players.
