- MattJF317, on 10/12/2007, -1/+147They let them fight it out in hockey.
Skip to 45 seconds into the video for the mic'd version. "You want to? Okay. Good luck man." hahaha that's simply awesome. - iamjaredc, on 10/12/2007, -8/+85I'd imagine the real reason there aren't more black hockey players in the NHL is that to play hockey as a kid is ungodly expensive. Especially if you're not in a place that freezes for winter.
Don't digg me down because you think I'm saying blacks are poorer, I'm not, the statistics do. And I'm obviously not saying that's right either. You'll probably think I'm racist, but I'm not. Just offering some insight. I'd just imagine that if you're struggling to get by, paying for hockey gear and rink time isn't your #1 priority. - Yang1205, on 10/12/2007, -3/+72was it just me or did he seem extremely calm for the situation. "You want to? Okay. Good luck man." That would intimidate me more than " LETS DO THIS BITCH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"
- chriskzoo, on 10/12/2007, -6/+61Shows you the difference between guys who are out there and have respect for the game versus the thugs we get in the NBA.
- jtstogner, on 10/12/2007, -9/+56@HoosbinPharteen
Saying that 98% of people can live without hockey is like saying that 98% of the population can live without baseball, soccer, football, basketball, tennis, and golf. It's a hell of a lot more entertaining than most of the garbage on TV today. - laplacian, on 10/12/2007, -1/+45@manifest:
you clearly don't understand the sport. - RobbieS, on 10/12/2007, -0/+43Laraque is a well known fighter, so that's why he wasn't losing his mind. Just business as usual for him :)
- mrgprime, on 10/12/2007, -0/+42In the OHL last night there was a great hockey fight... even the goalies went at it..
http://youtube.com/watch?v=zcUw42OXs6I
Just happened to be recording. It was pretty funny.
There were suspensions and penalties out the wazoo, as you can imagine :) - smpx, on 10/12/2007, -2/+42Ever tried fighting on skates? Staying on balance while trying to throw the other guy off isn't easy. If you throw a punch and miss, it takes only a slight shove to tip you off balance and make you look like a fool in front of a few thousand fans.
I give those two a lot of respect, it really was a clean fight. - slaystench, on 10/12/2007, -2/+41"The refs don't split them up because fighting is a part of hockey."
If I was a ref, I wouldn't get between two people throwing punches, no thanks. - Twinny, on 10/12/2007, -0/+30Sometimes I wonder why hockey isnt the number one sport in america, It's LEGAL to fight. Hell the guy just asked him if he wanted to go and he told him good luck. They fight, and respect eachother, what a gentleman's sport.
- isleepinadrawer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+25lets see you fight
- dan2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+24Well you have to at least acknowledge that you want to fight or it wouldn't be fair also the good luck thing is more about respect like the pat on the butt after the fight.
- MaxPayne3476, on 10/12/2007, -12/+34The refs don't split them up because fighting is a part of hockey. It's just customary to let them fight and duke it out until one falls on the ground or is seriously hurt. People expect to see fights.
- thatsmyaibo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+19That was more or less a fight to turn the game around. There are also plenty of hockey fight videos that show the heat of the moment brawl.
- sonick, on 10/12/2007, -3/+21Let me guess, you're American?
Fights are part of the game. The intent is not to hurt the other players (unlike in NBA brawls and fights), but rather to give the team a boost of confidence and change the attitude of the team. People familiar with hockey know how a good fight can entirely change the outcome of a game.
Fights in hockey are respectful with no intent to INJURE. They are more to hurt the player and the opposing team mentally rather than physically. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+17I'm black and I love hockey to death. I like it better than the NBA.
- Raesear, on 10/12/2007, -2/+18The refs step in when the fight goes to the ground-err...ice. Simple reason: you can't plant your feet to get a good punch when you're standing on ice so there's not much chance for major injury while they're standing. It's all arm punching.
That said, that was the most gentlemanly beginning to a fight I've ever seen. "How do you do sir? Fancy a round of fisticuffs?" - gunzy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15it's actually a 5 minute penalty not 2 min.
- da_bradler, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11"I'd imagine the real reason there aren't more black hockey players in the NHL is that to play hockey as a kid is ungodly expensive. Especially if you're not in a place that freezes for winter."
actually Chris rock said the exact same thing although I believe it was more like "***** are only good at ***** they can play at the park for free, basket ball, soccer, and runnin" lol - m3mn0n, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12ubuwalker31 obviously doesn't know what the hell he's talking about.
Fighting IS part of hockey. And fighting IS regulated. It's called penalties, instigator penalties, 3rd man in rule, game misconducts, suspensions, etc. - michaelschaaf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Hockey nowadays has much less fighting, almost none at all. At least in the NHL.
I miss it... : ( - sonick, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11Actually Twinny its 5 minute major for fighting (to both players, so it evens out).
- disillusioned, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13@bjweeks -- Or, you know... in Detroit.
- protocoI, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11Even more than the commentators cheering on, I was actually just watching this clip:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-7GzGv-ylfE&eurl=
Listen. Here that in the background? Yes. They are playing the Mortal Kombat theme in the arena. They have a fight button up there in the booth, just waiting to play that song. Integral part of the game, I tells ya. - evilelf2407, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8ha i mean it was a fight but thats still pretty good sportsmanship
- DiamondIce, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Edmonton should have never let Laraque go.
- m00nstone, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Hockey needs fighting due to it's very nature. There are 2 major sports that have fights on a regular basis. Hockey and Baseball. Why? Because in both sports you have the ability to use your equipment as a weapon.
Baseball: the pitcher throws the baseball at the opposing player.
Hockey: the player using his stick on the opposing player's body.
Each sport has to tolerate fighting to some degree. If not, there would be no true accountability for maiming someone with the game's equipment. - Eliminator, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Brashear vs Peters from the night before. Got to love the call.
http://origin.www.ifilm.com/video/2809360 - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6ha, those announcers would make pretty good boxing commentators
- sonick, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6... yes, and in those situations the players stepped over the line and were disciplined accordingly, by the refs, the league and the law. What's your point?
- sonick, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Because when they fight their goal is not to HARM the guy they are fighting, rather it is to boost the attitude and energy of their team.
NBA 'thugs and goons' fight coz they are pissed off and they want to bash the opposing player's heads in. - DollaBill, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9yea its 2:00 in a glass box with water and towels versus a couple years in a prison with a guy named Bubba who wants to tattoo his name on your ass....
unfortunately.... - rhesuspieces00, on 10/12/2007, -8/+14@hoosbinpharteen
No, 100% of people could live without hockey, just like 100% of people could live without basketball, baseball, football, soccer, or any other professional sport. - chriskzoo, on 10/12/2007, -5/+10@anagoge
Watch hockey much? Back to your hookah, hippie. - kafka47, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6You're gay. You're buried. Goodbye.
- metafore, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5dear america:
see, hockey is interesting. start watching it, and join me in prayer; may hockey night return to ESPN. amen.
yours,
Iceless In America - lansuggs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5^^definitely. He would have taken less and management still didn't sign. Hes even getting points for Coyotes. Damn it we want him back!
- Falldog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5AHL baby ;)
- sonick, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Good point, glad you brought that up. It is true, Bertuzzi, McSorley, et al. stepped over the line, and were not fights as much as they were assaults with intent to harm and no consent of the victim.
But fights like the one in this digg, which people who do not understand or watch hockey bash, are part of the game, entirely legal and as I have said, rarely if ever have intent to injure.
As for "thugs and goons": I, personally, don't automatically assume a 'thug/goon' to be african american, nor did I mean to imply that. - chriskzoo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5HAHA, awesome. I never understood goalies fighting except maybe in the heyday of Red Wings/Avalanche when it was Roy/Vernon and Roy/Osgood.
- RiverBelow, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7because fights are awesome.
And BTW, hockey fighting is awesome because of the sportsmanship involved. As you can tell, they ask politely and wish eachother luck. Then they beat the crap out of eachother. Legally. But then they're pals. =D hockey rulez. - Kyle660, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Georges Laraque is all class. He tries to score and never tries to kill anyone or ever take cheap shots in a fight. I saw him
play in Dallas a few years back when he was with Edmonton and he tried to fight a couple guys but didn't push the issue
when they declined. That's the kind of thing you don't really see unless you're there. These guys (mostly) respect one another greatly which
makes for a truly great sport. It bothers me a bit that people write off hockey as an unnecessarily barbaric sport when in actuality it is relies
heavily on respect and sportsmanship. I don't know, but it seems to me that the people who mainly criticize hockey don't know dick about it.
I'm okay with hockey being the least popular sport as long as people who obviously don't understand it leave it be. It is just like everything else:
if you don't like it or even understand it, change the channel. - itaylor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Definitely! You see the NBA "stars" going down and out with bruised backs and crap like that. Hockey players take pucks to the face, get stitched up, and are back out on the ice 10 min later. When it comes to toughness and all-out balls, there is NO comparison!
- DiamondIce, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7You don't watch much hockey do you?
- mikeyj10, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Seriously, I've been in hockey fights and it can get pretty hairy sometimes, but in general I've found hockey fighting to be fun. Although I would like to add that getting hit with a closed fist on the nose still hurts whether or not your on the ice skates.
- DollaBill, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5well considering Laraque is a seasoned fighter, he said good luck because Ivanans is far from him as a recognized fighter so wishing him luck was a smart comment directed at his experience....
- sonick, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Agreed; Anson Carter did pretty well for himself last season, and is definitely picking up his game again this season.
- mikeyj10, on 10/12/2007, -5/+9Because the Ref's like their teeth!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Lets see you rush in between two guys over 230 and split them up. Go watch some soccer fags kick each other in the shins if you don't like man sports.
I propose a new man law: "No man shall whine or complain in any mean, mode or manner about Ice hockey fighting." -
