- chadsmith729, on 11/02/2009, -16/+79I am really glad to see Michael Liambas is suspended from the league. That's a ***** brutal and unnecessary hit. He lead with his shoulder but had his stick trailing during the hit. ***** that guy. Good move OHL.
- Fhwqhgads, on 11/02/2009, -7/+65This is in Canada. There are no medical bills. The only requirement for treatment is being human.
/plug at American corporate healthcare - Cpd4224, on 11/02/2009, -8/+39Admittedly it was a dirty hit but he obviously did not mean to inflict the amount of damage he did. Although that's the risk you take when you try and land a dirty hit. Therefore the suspension is completely deserved.
- Renork, on 11/02/2009, -10/+34Those calling this a dirty or unnecessary hit have clearly never played hockey.
1st: his elbow was down and against his side, it was a clean shoulder hit.
2nd: his stick was not trailing, it was in a normal power skating position until he lowered his shoulder at the last second.
3rd: he was coming in relatively face to face and the other player, who had his head down by the way, turned last second with no idea what was coming because he wasn't looking, resulting in the side/semi behind hit. At this point the person throwing the check was committed to the motion.
Go slowly through the youtube vid and look closely at seconds 4-7 and 43-45 and look at the situation. At most maybe a charging infraction. And the person getting hit gets a hard lesson on why you never put your head down.
It is an unfortunate event, but it is what sometimes happens when people who likely weigh 250+ each in pads play a sport that allows them to intentionally run into each other at full speed with hard objects like the boards around. Maybe if he wore a full helmet with a proper chin strap he would be in better shape. Nothing in this video makes me feel it was in any way the fault of the person initiating the check. - banderwocky, on 11/02/2009, -13/+36That was pretty ***** dirty. Look at his elbow, he was looking to bring some hurt. Guys like these need to be booted for good.
- Runnamuck62, on 11/02/2009, -13/+28No doubt this was a brutal hit, but why is it that when somebody gets hurt, the person who dealt the hit is always punished. Part of playing hockey is smashing players and getting smashed. They go into the rink knowing full well that they might get hurt doing it. Yes the hit was bad, but as far as I can see, there was nothing illegal about it and I don't understand why he is getting suspended and fined for doing exactly what he is paid to do. It's a double standard to encourage carnage and fights for ticket sales, then turn around and act like hockey is all about "teamwork and strategy" as soon as someone gets hurt.
/rant - Crimeodial, on 11/02/2009, -2/+16What the hell do you want them to do? They're hockey players, not doctors. I'm an atheist to, but stop being a dick. You're making the rest of us look bad.
- asoap69, on 11/02/2009, -0/+14*****. You guys just said the same thing! I'm outraged!
- Turbojugend27, on 11/02/2009, -4/+16Dirty hit, for sure, but the helmet came off pretty easily, most players hardly have the strap tight enough to stay on while normally skating, they need to start doing them up better.
- FormerBabby, on 11/02/2009, -1/+11The law changes when you play a sport. I know in Ontario you cannot sue for being injured while playing because you agree to the risks of the game.
- The5nowman, on 11/02/2009, -1/+11HEAD SHOTS are dirty. Think of it as head shots in football, but worse.
- ToksterJokster, on 11/02/2009, -5/+14That had to hurt.
- SemperFly, on 11/02/2009, -2/+11Hi Fhwqhgads. I understand that you don't have a coping mechanism like prayer in your life, but maybe you should adopt one. It may help you to deal with your personal problems and allow you to circumvent that whole 'being a douchebag thing'.
- ezflip, on 11/02/2009, -2/+10I totally agree with you. Looking at that replay, the issuer didn't leave his feet and the hit was made within the alloted time of the other player having the puck. (You can't hit a player unless he has the puck) When you have the puck, you expect to get hit! If he wasn't ready for it, that was his fault. He plays hockey! A sport that has prided itself on being full contact. Sad situation for the family of the guy that got hurt, but it's all part of the game and the guy that hit him did nothing to get suspended or fined.
- madmaxmedia, on 11/02/2009, -2/+10Ummm, when a guy gets destroyed and is lying unconscious besides a pool of blood for 40 minutes before being airlifted away...I don't think a couple of group prayers for his safety and well-being are over the top.
- TheRealHonkHonk, on 11/02/2009, -5/+12I dont think that is a dirty hit. His intentions were to drill the defense in to the boards like they are taught to do -> offensive pressure so the defense give up the puck easier and make sloppy plays (aka hit them as hard as you can). If you look at the video again you notice Ben Fanelli turn right before he gets hit. This happens in hockey at all levels and I have had it happen to me, you have to be aware of when a guy is coming to drill you. Ben Fanelli would have been hit in the chest had he not have turned or been more prepared for the hit. It wasn't a dirty goon headshot. It was bad luck. Michael Liambas should be suspended because that how it is usually dealtwith (head check - intentional or not) but should not be stuck with medical bills and scruteny because he made a big hit at a bad time. You also noticed Michael Liambas knocked down another Rangers player fairly easily after the big hit, he's a big guy, and you have to be aware of where he is on the ice. As someone who has watched many Rangers games I hope Fanelli fully recovers and my prayers go out to him and his family.
- damphoud, on 11/02/2009, -3/+10I played Jr. hockey in Ontario, and this guy is a complete dick head. Guys know what they are doing when they land such a hit... you can see where his stick ends up (above his head) at the end of the hit (you just do not hit like that unless you are looking to head hunt) - it was clearly intentional. His reputation of a hockey player is out the window.
- Alli3388, on 11/02/2009, -2/+9Jesus... Paying medical bills. I'm so glad I'm Canadian, and that this hockey player is too. WTF are you doing U.S.????
- evilregis, on 11/02/2009, -3/+10*****. He was coming in full throttle from back around the blue line. He knew damn well that he was going to bring the pain. Did he think he'd fracture the dude's skull? Surely not, however he had no intentions of making a clean play there.
- Dragonis, on 11/02/2009, -1/+8yes look at his elbow... it's BELOW the elbow of the player who got hit.
the hit was clean 100% clean. the player who got hit doesn't know how to take a hit or keep his head up. - acid_jazz, on 11/02/2009, -1/+7Yes, after 40 minutes (he was unconscious). These dirty head shots have got to stop.
- evilregis, on 11/02/2009, -1/+7While I would normally agree with that, he'd be hit with a fine of... approximately $0. I think we can do better.
- Crimeodial, on 11/02/2009, -1/+6As an Atheist, I would like to apologize for this douchebag. He does not represent us all, we're not all such pricks.
- clickx, on 11/03/2009, -0/+5piece*
- Coffeedemon, on 11/02/2009, -0/+5He didn't "attack him" he hit him with a high shoulder check. Now before you start burying me compare what could be an attack (Bertuzzi, Simon) to this. This is a horrible outcome but it is not an attack in the same sense... the suspension is definately warranted though.
- Dragonis, on 11/02/2009, -2/+7ignorance... that's what i'm expecting from a lot of posts here. just like yours chad.
The hit was clean. the player got injured because he turned his back. He could've turned his for 1 of 3 reasons... 1. he saw he was coming and turned his back because he was trying to draw a penalty 2. just didn't want to get hit and was a reflex reaction. 3. didn't see him coming and got tagged.
All 3 of these situations are his fault. The hit was clean no elbow, he didn't leave his feet, the player turned a split second before the hit so it wasn't an intentional hit from behind. - deltoreo, on 11/02/2009, -2/+6That was a clean hit. The player turned at the last moment and it was too late to stop the hit. He got suspended because the unknowing public hears the story and thinks hockey is a horrible sport where this is commonplace. But now that he is suspended it's his fault not hockey's. I've been playing hockey for 21 years and accidents happen. The second player he hit was coming at him to stick up for his teammate, he wasn't just skating around trying to hurt everyone.
- Dragonis, on 11/02/2009, -0/+4@The5nowman the person is in critical because he didn't have his helmet on properly and he turned his back to either avoid the hit, or didn't see him coming. In either case it's his fault, not the player who delivered the hit
- Senturion, on 11/02/2009, -1/+5Check the video, Fanelli is facing towards Liambas right up until 0.5 seconds before the hit.
How do you expect a player to change his trajectory while skating at top speed with less than half a second of reaction time?
It is a fast, tough, brutal sport, ***** happens. I hope Fanelli is OK but sometimes it is just an unfortunate incident. - ezflip, on 11/02/2009, -1/+5He didn't hit him in the head. He hit him in the side/back. The guy wasn't ready for it so it jerked his head back and his helmet flew off, then the force of the hit sent him into the boards and when his head shot forward, it hit the glass hard. There was no "head shot"
- JakeBC, on 11/02/2009, -0/+4Regardless of whether it was a dirty hit or not, or who was to blame the fact is that there is a young hockey player critically injured. With that in mind, I just want to say that I hope Fanelli makes a full recovery.
- Nzx0824, on 11/02/2009, -1/+5He wasn't going for the check to kill the kid. It is ***** hockey people, stop saying that he should get kicked out.Yes he did charge him but it was a clean hit, he did no lift up his elbow when he checked him as some people on here are saying, he hit him with his side. It looks to me like Fanelli needs to look around the ice more and know his surrounding. He could have easily seen him coming way before he even touched the puck if you go look at the video again. As a matter of fact he looked right at Liambas! Now the second kid that got knocked down was coming at Liambas and he got shut down bad. Liambas was not going around the ice hitting people. Suspend him if you want but don't kick him out of the league just because a big check turned into a disaster. Also just to throw it in there because of a few comments, hockey is a very physical sport, not a pussy sport like basketball (not saying i don't like basketball but its a little ridiculous on some of the calls when they hardly get hit shooting the ball.). There are even fights in this sport which no other sport would allow to happen.
- Mosi13, on 11/02/2009, -0/+4Yes it is. If you watch the hit from behind the glass (the part right at the end of the video) you'll see Liambas's right hand smashing Fanelli's face into the glass... That's not allowed in hockey.
That being said, Fanelli did exactly what you're not suppose to do when you're 6-12 inches from the boards..that being turn into them. I personally think he got so hurt though, because he smacks his head on the metal divider on between the plates of glass (certainly wasn't lessened by Liambas smashing his face into the glass as well). - SirPsycho, on 11/03/2009, -0/+4This is a stupid comment. Was he supposed to let the wind carry him from the red line? He skated into the zone and STOPPED skating 10 feet from the guy. If this is charging, then every big hit is charging. Clean hit, end of story.
- Coffeedemon, on 11/02/2009, -0/+4If that sport has one of its main components being the shooting of participants in the face then no you should not be able to sue. Ever hear of assumed risk?
- Nzx0824, on 11/02/2009, -0/+4That's exactly it
- Mosi13, on 11/02/2009, -0/+3There is also a case to be made about seamless glass, as well as cages for their helmets.
If you watch the video Fanelli's head hits right on where the metal component keeps the glass together. While I'm not trying to say the other guy didn't mean to hurt him, I played Jr.A in Ontario and people know what they're doing out there, it is something that could have been a contributing factor...the cage for helmet is obvious..he wouldn't have had the helmet pop off in the first place. - Alli3388, on 11/02/2009, -1/+4Probably not. Major head trauma doesn't really hurt at all, even after the unconcious phase. I've been there. Everything just goes numb and you're in shock. It's actually one of the more pleasant bad injuries to go through, because you can't actually see the damage, which makes things easier.
- shnuffy, on 11/03/2009, -0/+3damn.
- bdigital24, on 11/03/2009, -0/+3the hit was perfectly legal... just absolutely catastrophic.
one thing leagues up and down need to mandate is that the chin strap is firmly around the jaw.. or figure out someway to keep helmets secured on players' heads. his skull basically took the brunt of that hit, as his helmet lifted up just before his head made contact with the metal divider... helmets fly off all too often, and were lucky injuries like this havent happened more frequently, even from just hitting your head on the ice. - buzaman, on 11/02/2009, -0/+3Look at the frame at 0:39 and tell me which hockey player in the world can change direction fast enough to avoid hitting Fanelli's after the little pirouette that put himself into an vulnerable position. Lambais's elbow was down, it was a shoulder hit as the player swung around. The combination of his helmet falling off and his head smashing into the metal divider magnified this hit into more.
It's terrible what happened and I hope the kid recovers. - deltoreo, on 11/02/2009, -0/+3He didn't take one stride the last 10-15ft. before the hit. He didn't lock on and chase the guy down, he was just forchecking and made a hit.
- inactive, on 11/02/2009, -0/+3Looks to me he tried to go shoulder to shoulder on the guy and it just didn't work out. A hit that hard shoulder to shoulder would have put him on his butt, but it wouldn't have been serious.
Its unfortunate, but that's what happens in hockey. I don't think he should be suspended...maybe told to calm the ***** down, but not suspended. - thebreach, on 11/02/2009, -0/+3Seemed like a fair hit, though like any sport sometimes people get hurt, and in hockey it is more encouraged than others.
That said I hope the guy recovers and the hitter is not condemned forever. - SirPsycho, on 11/02/2009, -1/+4Anybody who thinks this is a dirty hit clearly doesn't know anything about hockey. Yes he came from the blueline to hit him, that's where he was when the play developed. He stopped skating 10 feet from the hit and he didn't jump, so it's not charging. He had his elbow down, so it's not elbowing. When he put his shoulder down, the guy was facing him.He then turned his back to him, something you learn not to do when you first play contact hockey around 12 years old. He also didn't have his helmet on properly. I feel bad for Ben Fanelli and his family, but he is the one responsible for this situation, and hopefully he will be able to learn from it and continue his career. As for Michael Liambas, he shouldn't be suspended and I'm sure there is nobody who wants Ben to recover more than him.
- Alli3388, on 11/02/2009, -0/+3We're talking junior league. These guys don't have any money. They are sponsored by local families and get room and board from them, and they are paid $50 or so a week for pocket money. Fining him would only bankrupt his parents.
- AmazingSteve, on 11/02/2009, -2/+5It was a clean hit. The poor bastard just walked into it. I just watched some asshat on the tube advocating the banning of body checking in Hockey. Jesus waffle eating Christ on a pogo stick! In other news, the NFL is going to remove running from football because somebody broke their leg.
- Coffeedemon, on 11/02/2009, -0/+3Not trying to defend the hitter but the kid turned away from the hit and right into the boards at the very last second. There was no time for him to stop. I think the hit took his helmet off which made it worse still.
