- gkwillie, on 06/05/2008, -0/+26This song is our second National Anthem. I agree that the price is far too steep (it being, all things being equal, more expensive then the 'Monday Night Football' theme), but it is an absolutely integral piece of Canadiana.
If it can't be saved, I, as well as many of my brothers and Sisters, will shed more then a few tears. - UltimateFlynn, on 06/06/2008, -4/+26You ask everyone here in Canada, I bet only half would know the full lyrics to our National Anthem.
You ask a 90 year old Canadien with Alzheimers that *****'s him/herself to hum that tune, they would do it in perfect pitch.
That's how much that song means to us. - adamfreeland, on 06/05/2008, -1/+20$500 per play of this song is pretty steep, but I know every hockey fan will miss the HNIC theme if it must be replaced!
- HCviolence, on 06/06/2008, -2/+15da,daa da,daa ,da,daaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!!!!!!
- therealfoz, on 06/06/2008, -0/+11"If an agreement can't be reached, Moore said a nationwide contest would be held for Canadians to submit a new theme song."
If they don't reach an agreement, and turn to the public to submit songs, everyone should submit themselves playing the original (and only) Hockey Night in Canada theme. - qwertyguy, on 06/06/2008, -1/+11NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
- GregViers, on 06/06/2008, -0/+9I'm sure they can afford it out of their huge annual subsidy from the feds.
Isn't promoting Canadian culture a key part of their mandate?? - fejjfunklamella, on 06/06/2008, -1/+9Damn. Saw the headline and I thought Hasek was retiring (again..). Oh well...
- BlackJedi, on 06/06/2008, -0/+7The 500 dollars per use, I understand, is per show. So if they use it 20 times in the show (which they do) they just pay 500 clams.
The issue is over the royalties earned by the tune as a cell phone ring tone.
$500 clams per use is not unreasonable. It is undoubtedly one of the most recognizable Canadian iconic tunes, second only to our National Anthem. In some circles, it could likely replace the National Anthem and earn the same level of spine tingling, hair on the back of your neck pride. Does any nation think they could put a price on their "unofficial" National Anthem? Could any American place a price on the tune "God Bless America"? The HNIC tune is perhaps even more important to us than that particular piece is to Americans!
Every Canadian can tell a story of listening to the radio or watching television on Saturday night, tuning into Hockey Night in Canada for some of our greatest "domestic warfare" ever. It is linked to the battles of Leafs and the Habs, The donnybrooks between the Habs and the Nords, the always enjoyable battle of Alberta, and of course, the original six cross border face-offs.
It is Canadian, as much as Maple Syrup and the ever noble and humble beaver, the majestic moose, the Maple Leaf, the all powerful polar bear.
That tune floats in the mind of anyone who has ever had the honor to proudly, and loudly proclaim: I AM CANADIAN! - shagg187, on 06/06/2008, -0/+7To paraphrase a friend of mine:
"When i was a kid, i used to take a nap when i came back from school. My parents would be watching a Hockey game and this theme was my wake up call. It literally became a part of my life and i used to rush all the way to the living room in excitement."
Jeez man. I'll break his heart if i tell him they are changing the theme... :( - ithejosh, on 06/06/2008, -1/+7Dugg for the Canadian Flag in the username... I like the users of their countries are posting about their country.
- goodform, on 06/06/2008, -1/+7I've always had access to CBC living here in Michigan and I love that theme song. I've heard it all my life. I hope HNIC doesn't go for the flash in the pan, high gloss ESPN-esque look and feel. Man, that's everywhere. Right now HNIC is different. I hope they don't just blend in with the crowd. Heck, why don't they just get rid of Don Cherry while they're at it?
If it ain't broke, why fix it? - Bananas21ca, on 06/06/2008, -0/+5Kevin! He broke the comment box......AGAIN!!!!
- dirtyfrog, on 06/06/2008, -0/+5No
- catachip, on 06/06/2008, -0/+5Actually, I think almost all people would know the lyrics to the anthem. Not only do we learn it and sing it all the time in high school, but, have you ever been to a hockey game? Everyone sings the anthem. And if they all know the HNIC lyrics, then they're also going to hear the national anthem sung before every game on TV.
- mistahroth, on 06/06/2008, -0/+4Aww... I wrote a Pascal program in grade 10 that made the computer beep the Hockey Night in Canada theme :(
- Simplysped, on 06/06/2008, -4/+8RED WING STANDING BY
- inactive, on 06/06/2008, -0/+4If you consider how much money Hockey Night makes off of advertisers, etc., $500 is hardly unreasonable.
Besides, it's probably the only income Claman has.
Edit: It looks like they were fine with the $500. It was the 15% increase that they based their decision on. - krekc, on 06/06/2008, -0/+4Is that what you were saying as the Wings were raping the Avs this year?
- FallOutBoyTonto, on 06/05/2008, -0/+4more info just released:

Canadian Heritage Ministry
http://www.pch.gc.ca/index_e.cfm - cleggg, on 06/06/2008, -0/+3About the song. Local news this morning (montreal) said they just heard that the CBC is denying getting rid of the song, and stated they're in talks .
- taketheleap, on 06/06/2008, -1/+3the sad part is that the owner of that song/writer wants to charge through the wazoo for that song... seriously, a LOT of the blame needs to be squarely placed on her and her representatives (CRIA).
greedy little bastards if you ask me; both of them. - abel01, on 06/06/2008, -0/+2Well as Dave Hodge once said, "That's the CBC for you".
- cquilliam, on 06/06/2008, -0/+2I remember hearing before that CBC Sports is the only profitable side of CBC, and it pays for everything else on the network. HNIC is the crown jewel of CBC Sports, so I would have to agree that it is indeed insanely profitable.
But, this issue that has come up with the theme song, is just idiotic.
As much as I hate Nickleback, their version of the Elton John classic is really good and seems fitting for the show. As opposed to that horrible Bryan Adams song that TSN had for a few years. *shudder* - Coffeedemon, on 06/06/2008, -0/+2Was the same for me. I remember being 6 years old and playing in the basement. When I would hear that song I'd run upstairs and watch the game with my dad. Lots of memories tied up there. I'm hardly ever compelled to write and complain about anything but I did for this. Hockey IS Canada and that song IS Hockey for a lot of people. The CBC mandate is all about Canadian content so to make an arbitrary decision on something so tied into the Canadian culture is an insult to that mandate IMO.
- UltimateFlynn, on 06/06/2008, -0/+2Actually the second theme is for "Hockey Tonight", the half hour Pre-Game show.

I assume this will be the permanant one. - swgc5, on 06/06/2008, -0/+2Nickelback is garbage.
- inactive, on 06/06/2008, -0/+2I agree. Its probably the only good thing John Tesh did.
- nydwarf, on 06/06/2008, -0/+2We will have to go with our Third National Anthem, Taking Care of Business by BTO!!
- vishusdelishus, on 06/06/2008, -1/+2Well...it was bound to happen eventually I guess, but I'm still not happy about it. Every Canadian has lifelong memories tied to that theme song.
On a positive note maybe I'll stop hearing the Hockey Night in Canada ringtone butcher the song all day, as each and every one of my friends has it on their phones. - inactive, on 06/06/2008, -0/+1is there a reason Did the composer want to much money ? I mea would you think by now it's etched din Canadian history let alone Hockey History ! They should own at least some rights to it if not by the dam song period ! If the woman cares so much let them play it it's her song she doesn't have to charge her name will go down in history for doing this good deed set aside writing the theme !
And to be honest if it is to be be stopped it should be on Canadian soil during 2 Canadian teams !! - boxlight, on 06/06/2008, -0/+1Why the hell is $500 per play steep?? Hockey Night In Canada is insanely profitable for the CBC and the theme song is more recognizable and more more popular than the national anthem.
If I wrote that song, you better believe I'd want royalties every time it was played -- $500 a week is a freakin bargain if you ask me. - catachip, on 06/06/2008, -0/+1Yeah, but I was trying to avoid posting THAT one. That's why I put "like" what is replacing it. No one needs to know they got Nickelback to do it... even if they are a Canadian band.
- obzidian, on 06/06/2008, -1/+2Next thing you know they will put a levy on hockey sticks and ban donuts.
- Ramb00, on 06/19/2008, -0/+1I think its funny that CTV bought the song. Its almost like they are holding it hostage.
CBC should have paid royalties to the composer for ringtones.
I don't personally care about the song.
GO CANUCKS GO. - marcusbrutus, on 06/06/2008, -0/+1Fail.
- higgy345, on 06/06/2008, -0/+1Colorado? lol Did you miss that series? I know it was pretty quick with them being swept and all.
- SLockhart, on 06/06/2008, -0/+1It was starting to sound dated anyway. They should get one of the Canadian Idol winners to do a new song for HNIC.
- JNudda, on 06/10/2008, -0/+1Been watching HNIC since before I could ice skate. It will never be the same.
- cowboy_k, on 06/06/2008, -0/+1Unfortunately, Canadian copyright term is pretty much the same as American - so it'll drop into the public domain about the time my kids are ready to check into the Shady Acres Rest Home...
- ecrunner, on 06/05/2008, -3/+4o noes!!!!
- mfshockey, on 06/06/2008, -3/+4I'M NOT YOUR GUY, FRIEND!
- ElementCDN, on 06/06/2008, -0/+1Lame. Just use Stompin Tom's Good ol Hockey Game.
- inactive, on 06/06/2008, -0/+1Why should they even have to pay? Just play it, it's not like they'd be stealing it or something.
- gsenechal, on 06/06/2008, -0/+1I guess the CBC can go with a different tune until the copyright runs out... Then bring the HNIC theme back with lots of flash. Question is: when does the copyright run out?
From the Canadian copyright office website:
"Works in other media such as film and sound recordings are granted different terms which are generally not linked to the life of the author. Instead, they are granted a fixed term from the time of their creation." - adamfreeland, on 06/06/2008, -0/+1$500 per play is steep because they've been playing the same tune for 40 years! We're talking big money here. They should have bought the rights to the tune outright, instead of paying royalties each time it was played.
- cquilliam, on 06/06/2008, -0/+1Its not due to CBC not wanting to pay $500 per game, it has to do with an on-going legal battle over the rights to the song pertaining to cbc selling it as ringtones.
There are a few issues involved with this. - ghank, on 06/06/2008, -0/+1Franzen > Colorado
Seriously, Franzen scored as many goals in that series as the ENTIRE Colorado team. - Coffeedemon, on 06/06/2008, -0/+1PCH is not the CBC though. They are separate entities.
