- cramd, on 10/10/2007, -2/+78We, Vancouver, can't let him go..
And what does the NHL want to do? Make the sport basketball.. The scoring last year in the NHL was quite high, and does not need to be adjusted. - oneshotnothing, on 10/16/2007, -2/+62Should Luongo quit, I'm sure half of Vancouver will commit suicide.
- eh97ac, on 10/10/2007, -2/+61Gary Bettman, stop ruining my GAME!!!!!!
- spyd3rweb, on 10/10/2007, -1/+58***** GARY BETTMAN!!!
- smoothmedia, on 10/10/2007, -4/+56Changing the size of the nets essentially ruins all of the stats/records ever set in the past. Luongo wants be seen as the best goalie of all time, and that will be pretty hard to accomplish if he's guarding a soccer net.
- Shiftgood, on 10/16/2007, -9/+49how about smaller pads?
oh.. .and ice trampolines. - themarq, on 10/10/2007, -2/+29Changing the nets would change the traditional 'look' of hockey, I'm with Roberto all the way. If they really want to see more scoring in the games, not that agree with that idea anyway; they should remove the limit on curvature of the sticks, it was only limited to reduce the "whip speed" of the puck to protect goalies anway and with today's equipment it's no longer an issue (harder faster shots).
I realize that the commission wants to increase scoring to make the game more interesting (IE: 200 goals+ in a basketball game). But make it more interesting to who? If you don't like hockey as it is, 2 or 3 more goals a night isn't going to make you a fan. - noahhoward, on 10/10/2007, -1/+28They've already made the pads smaller.
- Kronos6948, on 10/10/2007, -1/+23Damnit, Bettman! Stop ***** this sport up! Although it will never compete with Football, Basketball, or Baseball in ratings, it still has (had?) a strong core of fans! You keep changing ***** and you'll never keep new fans...
- AntBing, on 10/10/2007, -3/+25I don't watch hockey now, and bigger nets (more scoring) won't make me start. Leave the rules and goal size alone, at least you'll keep the fans you already have.
- CannedMango, on 10/10/2007, -1/+21Good for him. Someone needs to defend the integrity of the game. Frankly, I'd stop watching if they made the nets bigger.
This is the same as:
Bringing the outfield wall in 30 feet closer in baseball,
Having bigger hoops in basketball,
having 5 downs in football,
increasing the par on all golf holes by 1.
It's a pathetic idea to attempt increase the scoring in hockey. The game is fine, leave it alone. - Kronos6948, on 10/10/2007, -2/+20Hell, why have goalies at all? Just let the NHL be like some kid's street hockey game with a trashcan and no goalies. Right? People want scoring, right? Basketball on skates is what people want.
- fnaqzna, on 10/10/2007, -1/+19Right, and then players will simply cherry pick in the offensive zone. Bad idea, imho.
Removing the two-line pass rule has made the game plenty fast. - RobotKing, on 10/10/2007, -2/+20If he was 'Elite' he would've asked for bigger nets and a multi-puck mode followed by his laughter and the words "Bring it on-Lock and load".
- Kronos6948, on 10/10/2007, -2/+20They've already shrunk the size of the pads several times.
And don't be surprised if Bettman takes you up on your idea of ice trampolines. He's ruining this sport. - euphemizeme, on 10/10/2007, -9/+26Yeah, but what's the downside?
- rolosworld, on 10/10/2007, -3/+18don't fix if it isn't broken...
- carnage, on 10/10/2007, -0/+14my dad always talked about how when he was a kid, if the goalie stepped out of the crease, he was just like a regular player. if you touched the goalie tho, the rest of the team would have it out for your. I always wanted the game to be like this again....
- noahhoward, on 10/10/2007, -0/+14It is NOT about driving new fans to the sport, it is about a game. The NHL should not be ruining the game in the name of lining their pockets. Even if they think they should they should not do so at the expense of their fans.
Scoring goals is not the only part of the game, there is more to it than that. The best part of the game is the setup and skill it takes to score that goal. If you open the net up it takes the enjoyment out of it. Any idiot can push a biscuit into a net. - Justizzle, on 10/10/2007, -2/+16Um... the goalie's job is to... block shots.
The fact is, today's athletes have higher scoring games than ever before in the history of the sport. Why make it any more ridiculous than it is. IMO, a damn good hockey final score is 1-0 after an overtime, and possibly a shoot out. Bigger nets mean higher scores, and less exciting games. If you want a high-scoring game, go watch basketball, where you'll 9 times out of 10 see triple digit score. - froston, on 10/10/2007, -2/+15Vowing to leave is a pretty solid stance. The NHL was such an awesome sport until Gary Bettman messed alot of it up. It still is in my opinion the most exciting sport with by far the most all around skilled athletes.
- fnaqzna, on 10/10/2007, -2/+14Rather than make any changes to pads or nets, allow checks to the goalie if he gets behind the goal line.
- fnaqzna, on 10/10/2007, -1/+13Dig me down, but scoring is exciting because of the difficulty. Decreasing the difficulty will not make it more exciting.
- cramd, on 10/10/2007, -6/+18The NHL will care about him leaving. He puts asses in seats in Vancouver. Asses = Money
- one2gamble, on 10/10/2007, -0/+12Go to a few games and you will quickly become a fan. Hockey has so much going on around the play you will understand why the scoring is relatively low.
Consider that a 3-1 game translates to a 21-7 football game. Hockey really isnt that "low scoring" anymore. - vancanucksfan, on 10/10/2007, -3/+15if luongo quits i will hang myself :(
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+12Actually, the NHL thinks larger nets = more goals = asses = money. I can't believe I'm talking asses with someone using the screen name "cramd"
- LowROI, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10It's cause anyone can pick up a ball and throw it in a hoop, hit a ball with a bat as kids. Learning to skate properly can in itself take a few years. People grow up playing basketball, football, and baseball, and love the sports when they get older.
- fleury29, on 10/10/2007, -1/+10Its kinda hard to be the best goalie of all time if you don't play. But I have to agree with Luongo, minus the quiting. I have watched hockey since i was 4ish (now 20), and my most exciting games I have seen so far have been watching 1 goal games. People like Martin Brodeur are what inspired me to become a goalie in my younger years. I have since fiscally grown out of the game and stick with random stick times, but I digress. Yes I enjoy goals, but I also enjoy watching a really good goaltender. I think if you make the nets bigger you will loose some of the current fans. I for one was against making the goalies pad smaller. If they want to open up the game eliminate the clutching and grabbing the defense are doing and make them play some solid D. Don't just think that: More Goals = More Fans. If you want more fans, negotiate more nation-wide air time. Who's Idea was it to have the NHL be on OLN?! Gary Bettman needs to be fired and bring someone in that know what they are doing.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9basket ball on skates, LOL!
I am a hockey fanatic and never understood basketball. The game doesnt matter until the last 7 minutes of play. - noahhoward, on 10/10/2007, -1/+10Dugg up in hopes of getting rid of one more emo.
- pp7k, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9Did you read the article? This guy came in second in MVP voting, just after Crosby. He is the best goaltender in the world right now (all due respect, he outplayed Brodeur & Kipper last season).
How can you say it's about scoring not saves? They are yin and yang, each meaningless with the other. Clearly you know little about the sport. Maybe you should try basketball.
Also, he can make lots of money in Europe. Maybe not $7M, but not far off. So don't think it's an empty threat. - loxx500, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8Plus the way scoring is in basketball it is not as exciting. You expect people to score every time they shoot. With hockey when you have 4-5 goals a game each one is exciting. The commissioner is trying to bring hockey to a wider audience, but alienating the real fans at the same.
- SuperMoses, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8You guys still have Joe Sakic! You also have Ryan Smyth, Hejduk, Brunette, and many young stars. Stastny, Wolski, Svatos, Arnason, etc.
- Coffeedemon, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8Look up a picture of Patrick Roy with those matress pads he used to wear.
- SnuKs, on 10/10/2007, -4/+12So what's the point of having any sort of defense if it's all about scoring you dumbass? Obviously the league is doing this to create more excitement to attract more viewers to the sport. You can't blame the guy for being a purist.
- fnaqzna, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7You should try it. A live hockey game is better than any other sport.
- clemdionisio, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8Agreed. In fact scoring would likely have the opposite effect. With every goal, play stops, teams skate around and line up for another face off. I'd much rather see more back and forth rushes than more goals.
- SuperMoses, on 10/10/2007, -5/+12Don't make the nets bigger. Make the pads smaller!

After: http://sharkspage.com/jpgs3/luongo.jpg - neilbaylor, on 10/10/2007, -2/+9"The fact is, today's athletes have higher scoring games than ever before in the history of the sport"
ummm, do you remember the free-wheeling NHL of the 70s and 80s, Gretzky getting 230 points in one season etc
scoring may be up slightly since the late 90s, but, well, you're an idiot. - flave, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Exactly, it's the same reason that soccer is so popular around the rest of the world. It's easily accessible to people regardless of income. You don't need to put your kid in hundreds of dollars worth of padding every year to play like peewee hocky. All you need is a ball to kick around and some sticks or rocks to delineate the goal posts.
- Kronos6948, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6When will people realize that there's a lot more to hockey than scoring? How often are there scores in Football? Obviously people realize that a lot more goes on in a football game, but yet they can't figure it out with hockey? I don't understand it.
- mortigon, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Yes, we do
you still haven't gotten laid? - sonnysavage, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Sex? I personally like to score more...
- euphemizeme, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7Either that or put lasers on the goalies.
- Kronos6948, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6It doesn't help that the Avs aren't that good anymore...
- cbrunet, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7Like people are saying, scoring was huge last year anyways. Dany Heatley has had 2 back to back 50 goal seasons. No one has done that since Pavel Bure, so you know it can be done now. I really don't think bigger nets are needed at all.
- giroguy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6id say its about saves.. if you wana see people go back and forth scoring on each over every 3 minutes watch basket ball.. at that point its just whoever messes up losses the came.. i cant stand watching it... hockey is intense due the the almost goals.. and crazy scramble saves.. and tense last minutes when its 1-1 in a tripple overtime... dont ruin a sport over making and extra million a year.. possibly..
- SnapETom, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6I can't believe Gary Bettman has so much urine. He's pissed on so many things already - conference/division changes, rule changes, work stoppage, etc. Just when you think he has no more piss, along comes bigger nets.
- mortigon, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5I still give a ***** about hockey
Just because you're a bandwagoner doesn't mean everyone is -
