http://www.break.com/pictures/hot-baseball-chick60 ... - LowROI, on 11/15/2008, -0/+332 years old, but dugg. This guy made this rink for his kids all by himself, and modded his mower into a Zamboni!

This huge backyard rink is in Sylvan Lake Alberta, west of Red Deer. Its the creation of Shane Cyrenne, originally from Pontiex, south of Swift Current, and his neighbor Chris McNeil. 9000 gallons of water was used to make the rink, and 70 hours in the shop to build the mini-Zamboni.

And it doesn't seem as rare a thing is one might think.
http://www.usahockeymagazine.com/story.php?left_na ... - sfcaptainrob, on 11/15/2008, -1/+19Back in my day my neighbor's dad would just hose his backyard down and call it a ice rink. Spoiled rotten kids. Get off my lawn!
- amandaworld, on 11/15/2008, -1/+17Classic, :))
- rileyhallwood, on 11/15/2008, -1/+15canada ftw.
- UniverseZero, on 11/15/2008, -9/+20lol Canada
- NEWNHLISLAME, on 11/15/2008, -1/+11It's an EDMONTON OILERS logo at center ice ! DuGG!
- euphoria860, on 11/15/2008, -0/+9they got a little Zamboni too, haha.
- WiZZLa, on 11/15/2008, -0/+8google Aki Hoshino.
- Aroundtown27, on 11/15/2008, -0/+6those are quite bouncy
- DeFex, on 11/15/2008, -0/+6we watch it too.
- NEWNHLISLAME, on 11/15/2008, -0/+5Edmonton 94 was Ryan Smyth Jersey
- foofoobee, on 11/15/2008, -0/+5there's a video to go with that picture too: http://www.metacafe.com/watch/204162/aki_hoshino_b ...
- quarkie, on 11/15/2008, -0/+5I wish the only thing we did in Canada was play hockey.
- daulm, on 11/15/2008, -0/+4I guess a frozen pond just doesn't cut it anymore...
- zdiggler, on 11/15/2008, -0/+4Most people just lay tarp in backyard, surrounded with some 4x4, fill it up with water and wait for a cold day.
- kcb2, on 11/15/2008, -0/+4The rink is impressive, but the Zamboni is off-the-shelf - http://www.zamboni.com/machines/model100.html
- Jeffler, on 11/15/2008, -0/+4Chris Pronger was traded from the Oilers because he spent his non-playing time breaking into this guys back yard.
(Seriously though, it was for ***** lady reporters) - cquilliam, on 11/15/2008, -1/+4That's just the back part, the part doing the zamboni work. You think he built a zamboni to attach to his lawn mower from scratch?
- Aroundtown27, on 11/15/2008, -0/+3it is not that big....
- WhiteCloud, on 11/15/2008, -0/+3The perfect algorithm
- makennanmickey, on 11/15/2008, -6/+9You couldn't be more wrong. That picure is from Edmonton, AB Canada where the housing market is through the roof and still climbing.
Just one more reason why Canada is better that The U.S of Eh... - PedleZelnip, on 11/15/2008, -0/+3Oilers fans?
- morogolus, on 11/15/2008, -2/+5I swear we do more in Canada then play hockey
- livefromheaven, on 11/15/2008, -0/+3Wow, I used to build a rink every year.. obviously nowhere near as elaborate. My Zamboni was a metal rod with a hose attachment and a bunch of holes spaced a few inches apart. That's really impressive.
- quarkie, on 11/15/2008, -0/+2The housing market in Canada didn't heat as much as it did in the states and had a much slower growth rate. Hence through the roof in Canada means something totally different than through the roof (and then through the floor) in the states.
That being said, Calgary, Edmonton and the rest of Alberta did have a lot of growth in housing prices compared to other places in Canada. I would say that some places have the potential for a bit of a correction due to the drop in oil places, however it won't be nearly as steep as it was in US due to the relative calm in the Canadian mortgage industries (we did not have as much speculator purchasing of houses) - BoneStamp, on 11/15/2008, -0/+2Looks like he took over his neighbor's yard too.
- camilos007, on 11/15/2008, -0/+2Its quite simple really. See below.
// Front Page Code
if ( article == hockey_story )
front_page = true;
else
// Every other article follow normal front page algorithm. - AntP1, on 11/15/2008, -0/+2that rink is clearly not up to specifications!
but i would totally have killed for one of those as a kid :( - Sornos, on 11/15/2008, -0/+2Americans may have fighter jets and bombs and explosions as patriotic images, but as a Canadian, nothing makes me want to stand up and sing the anthem more than a group of guys making a hockey rink. That's what being Canadian is all about: withstanding the minus 100 temperatures with your nose freezing off to play some ***** hockey.
Both my parents were stationed in Afghanistan and they both came back with stories about the hockey rink they made in the desert. There was not ice, but it had regulation lines and everything. They even played a game with some old school NHL stars. The Stanley Cup was there too.
Excuse, I got ah.. something in my eye. - thedrue, on 11/15/2008, -0/+2Commence the breaking of windows!
- jbob2000, on 11/15/2008, -0/+2These are all over the place in canada. There are even companies you can hire to set one up for you.
However, not in this much detail. (and with a zamboni, nice touch) - tgc1, on 11/17/2008, -0/+2Looks like he has a pretty cool neighbor as well.
- MrApocalypse, on 11/15/2008, -0/+2Why would you want to play paintball on an ice rink?
It's slippery and you have no cover whatsoever, you could mod the modded landmower-zamboni into a paintballtank though. - NEWNHLISLAME, on 11/15/2008, -0/+2good article!
- retral, on 11/15/2008, -0/+2lol @ the JohnDeerboni
- Nephersir7, on 11/16/2008, -0/+1"KILL IT WITH FIRE!" -A typical Calgary flames fanboy
- villainousT, on 11/15/2008, -0/+1that's incredible, i'm impressed.
- dmrick, on 11/15/2008, -0/+1A lot of people in Canada make homemade hockey rinks, however they are never usually this good. My cousin has a mini basketball court in his backyard and they put up some boards and made some ice, it turned out pretty well, but its a lot of maintenance.
- asgardshill, on 11/16/2008, -0/+1You had dirt? You must have been rich.
- oda1, on 11/16/2008, -0/+1Man, back when I was a kid my parents would draw a circle in the dirt in my backyard and tell me to run around in it when I was bored.
- jmask5, on 11/15/2008, -0/+1That's awesome and all but click on the picture to see something slightly more awesome.
- JMellissa, on 11/17/2008, -0/+1I was in a town outside of Montreal, Canada and it seemed like there was a hockey rink (most were not as fancy as that one) in every other back yard. VERY IMPRESSIVE!
- stubarwick, on 11/15/2008, -0/+1that thing is awesome... my friends and i would play on a backyard rink when we were little, it was nowhere near as cool as that.
- ThinkRad, on 11/15/2008, -0/+1Fun, but not as fun as going to the Spicy videos section and fapping.
- PedleZelnip, on 11/15/2008, -0/+1I'm Canadian and would have to agree that the second sports pic was more impressive.
Click the image two more times after that one, and you'll see the type of person who plays on the backyard rink. - coachroth, on 11/15/2008, -0/+1Wish we'd get a winter over here making things like this possible...
