- TheSabre, on 12/13/2008, -0/+10All NHL teams have to dress 2 goalies for each game. The goalie that was playing was their normal backup, so this guy had to dress up as the backup. He didn't get to play because the minor league goalie arrived and then suited up as the actual backup.

In the case where both goalies get injured in the course of the game the coach must select one his skaters to put on the pads and get in the net.

About a year ago someone linked to part of the NHL Rulebook that said if both goalies are injured in the course of the game, literally anyone can dress as the third goalie, and most teams have an emergency plan if this is the case. For instance, the Isles would dress Garth Snow, and a lot of teams have former goalies as coaches or assistant coaches still young enough to be able to play.

I know in the old days they could pull someone out of the stands or have a coach suit up but I thought that went out the window with the NHLPA.
