- EatingPaste, on 03/22/2009, -1/+41I feel bad for him, he's never going to hear the end of that.
- MetalHead73, on 03/22/2009, -1/+35When a player on one team recieves a penalty, the play continues until said team regains control of the puck, this is reffered to as a delayed penalty, the goalie of the team, the Canucks, that is on the attack leaves the net and an extra man is allowed on the ice until, in this case, a Coyotes player regains control of the puck, the play is then whistled dead and the player goes to the box.
It's usually impossible to score on a delayed penalty if it is against you, however, as you just saw, it can happen. - WhatsUpWithJack, on 03/22/2009, -0/+28My jaw hung open for a full minute after watching this atrocity play out live...
- inactive, on 03/22/2009, -0/+242 hockey stories on the front page? Nice.
- HappyScrappy, on 03/22/2009, -1/+21It's 'cause hockey rules.
- goldenrhino, on 03/22/2009, -2/+21For the non-hockey fans among us, can someone explain exactly what is going on here, other than something incredibly embarrassing?
Delayed penalty? Can someone fill me in? - drunkirish, on 03/22/2009, -0/+13After reading all of the explanations here, something occurred to me:
Hockey fans are a lot more helpful and articulate than I've been led to believe. - ItalianBongo, on 03/22/2009, -1/+11That dive at the end must have been fun
- dawesdust12, on 03/22/2009, -1/+11No. For a penalty to get called Possession and Control must be met.. him tapping that puck counts as possession, but he didn't control the puck. and then for the defenceman to touch it afterwards, it became a legal goal. However had the defenceman NOT touched it, it would have been disallowed, as the last player to touch the puck was on the team being penalized.
- DelSolMan, on 03/22/2009, -0/+7That was his first goal of the year.
- stuffradio, on 03/22/2009, -0/+7I came in to this article hoping it wasn't my team. I just looked down and shook my head.
- Nightfall, on 03/23/2009, -0/+5Thats not as bad as Patrick Stefan missing an empty net at point blank range, and Edmonton picking it up and scoring at the last second to force overtime.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dDbEX666G3Y - snapneck, on 03/22/2009, -4/+9This doesn't look like an own goal. I don't really follow ice hockey but following the video closely its clear the guy in red hit the shot that went in
- Nateon, on 03/22/2009, -0/+4You are absolutely correct. The guy above is just a delusional canucks fan.
- Someguy101, on 03/22/2009, -2/+6Could someone that understands hockey explain to me why there wasn't a goalie in front of the net?
- someguy44, on 03/22/2009, -0/+4That was like 90% more Henrik's fault than it was O'Brien's.
- synergy91, on 03/22/2009, -0/+4Its a shame to live in a city where your team has went 16-4-1 in the last 21 games....
it was a fluke accident, but you my good sir are an idiot - valentine76, on 03/22/2009, -0/+4Was this todays game? Canucks can really stink it up sometimes, but love them non the less.
- inactive, on 03/22/2009, -4/+7Mom ..must be so proud !!
- NathanCH, on 03/22/2009, -1/+4No kidding. Canucks are the hottest team in the NHL right now.
- Kuratowski, on 03/22/2009, -0/+3This is the result of a delayed penalty call. The offending team doesn't get the penalty called until they are in possession of it. Just touching the puck is not enough for possession. They have to be in control of it.
- digg-dugg, on 03/22/2009, -3/+6***** you
- elpresidente408, on 03/22/2009, -1/+4Yeah to me it looked like the guy who passed it accidentally hit the red guy and it bounced back towards the net
- calbff, on 03/22/2009, -0/+3Technically, the whistle isn't supposed to be blown on a delayed penalty until the opposing team actually has control of the puck, but this generally isn't how it's called. Here, if you watch the last replay, it's O'Brien that knocks it in the net and since the Coyote didn't have control when he hit it, it's the right call.
- CoreyHalliwell, on 03/22/2009, -11/+14It was just a ***** up play/delayed call. He tapped the puck, it's often enough to finalize the penalty. Sometimes guys make mistakes, the Sedins have a pretty good goal to own team VS goal to opposing team record. For Example:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UsaS9D6DaT4
As for Shane O' Brien that guy gets way more penalties than he is worth.
Either way tho a 5-1 loss is... more than just a loss... especially right now. :(
GO CANUCKS! - HappyScrappy, on 03/22/2009, -0/+3No, because he didn't control the puck. If he didn't control it, he didn't guide it in, and therefore the other team put it in their own goal themselves. Why should the whistle be blown just to protect you from your own mistakes?
- schwab002, on 03/22/2009, -0/+3That play wasn't as bad as Ryan O'Byrne on the Canadiens scoring on his own goal earlier this season:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=afEB1mK_B6Q
At least Shane O'Brien had a chance to dash towards the puck and his goal in a good effort to stop it... - HappyScrappy, on 03/22/2009, -0/+3Delayed Penalties happen for most kinds of penalties, as long as the team that is to be penalized doesn't have the puck. Note most stoppages of play in hockey are for offsides, icing, puck out of play, etc. and not penalties.
It's pretty safe to pull your goalie, because if the other team gets possession of the puck, play will stop. So the only risks are scoring on yourself, which is what happened here, the penalized team (actually penalized player in this case!) didn't really affect the movement of the puck directly, although he did lead directly to the other team getting discombobulated enough to fumble the puck into their own net.
Also, if you play soccer, note that despite the title here, hockey doesn't have own goals. Which is why you see at the end of the clip that the goal is credited to the penalized team, not the team (or player) that actually shot it into his own goal. - GoKings, on 03/22/2009, -0/+2I always thought that once the other team touches the puck in a delayed penalty the whistle is automatically blown. I guess it is possession.
- Jablinsk, on 03/22/2009, -2/+4From a different angle you can clearly see it hit his stick, but the fault should lie on sedin's bad play
- Bic823, on 03/22/2009, -1/+3at :44 in the video you can clearly see O'Brien hit the puck.
- Tamant, on 03/22/2009, -2/+4I saw the NHL scoreboard and didnt know why the coyotes got an empty net goal in the second period. nice. Only the casucks could pull this off.
- dexter411, on 03/22/2009, -0/+2The puck did not deflect off of an offending player. Physical action by an offending player did not cause the puck to enter the goal; the last player to touch the puck was O'Brien and so it was his action that caused the puck to enter the goal.
- HappyScrappy, on 03/22/2009, -0/+2Oh yeah, and one more thing. Sometimes the delayed penalty is never called. For example, if a player is on a breakaway and the defensive team tries to trip him, the ref puts his arm up to signal a penalty. But if the player on the breakaway retains the puck and drives to the net and scores, then the goal scored cancels the delayed penalty and it is never called or served.
So there is no hockey equivalent to basketball's "three point play". - rhuzyo, on 03/22/2009, -0/+2o well we might see ossi vaananen now or maybe a return of rob davidson O'Brien screwed up a lot of simple plays this game so he might see the press box this week but that was not his fault the sedins ***** up alot of simple ***** as well
- XkenX87, on 03/22/2009, -2/+4My Bad.
- mrmann14, on 03/22/2009, -1/+3on a delayed penalty, play isn't called down until the team who took the penalty touches the puck. The other team pulls their goalie because there should be no way to have the puck go into their net. Exceptions apply obviously :( :(
- Marshalrusty, on 03/22/2009, -3/+5Having watched the video a few times, I'm not sure that Shane O'Brien made contact with the puck at all. It was very close, but he may have missed it completely. Looks like the other guy hit it and O'Brien almost instantly went to stop it.
I'm no expert, so maybe I'm wrong here. - Drakoi, on 03/22/2009, -0/+2he should get an extra point for putting his body in the net too.
- Tarkaan, on 03/22/2009, -0/+2http://digg.com/soccer/Soccer_FAIL_Player_Scores_i ... <-- is it own goal day on digg or what?
- Lockhart1, on 03/22/2009, -2/+4For the record, the Canucks are the hottest team in the league right now and have won 16 of their last 21 games. Tonight's game was a stinker but just one loss in the grand scheme of things. Sorry I just had to point that out.
GO CANUCKS!!! - beervolcano, on 03/22/2009, -1/+3At least it wasn't the game winner. If that was the case, the they definitely would not have deserved the win. Good thing I'm a Yotes fan! Hopefully next season we'll make the playoffs. :(
- Jeffler, on 03/22/2009, -2/+4Serious answer? They were there steadily from October until about a month ago thanks to my frequent submissions.
Digg's algorithm changed and ***** me over.
Suddenly in the past week or so my stuff is front paging again.
In other words, hockey's back on digg again! - dexter411, on 03/22/2009, -0/+2The skirt of the net is normally padded to slow down pucks that hit the back. It makes it easier for referees standing behind to see quick pucks.
- someguy44, on 03/22/2009, -0/+2Wow, I never realized I had so many fellow Nuck fans and hockey fans here at Digg.
- Fozefy, on 03/22/2009, -0/+2"goal to own team VS goal to opposing team"
What the heck are you trying to say here? :S
Do you mean +/-? If so just say it. - inactive, on 03/22/2009, -0/+2this angle doesn't show it, but if you watched the game live, the replay looking away from the net shows obrien tapping the puck as it travels towards the net.
- dawesdust12, on 03/22/2009, -1/+3I'd hope I was correct, I do aspire to become a lineman for some sort of Major Junior league or higher. In my case, I'd be aiming for the WHL.
Who knows though, there's a lot less positions for officials... so chances are small. At least I've been able to apply my knowledge with 2 hockey related videos posted.. one being that shootout, where goal #1 should have been disallowed, as he scored on a rebound, which isn't allowed, then this hilarious situation. - ThinkSoJoE, on 03/22/2009, -0/+2bahahahaha! That's great!
- dexter411, on 03/22/2009, -0/+2Because everyone else is too high to put up the marijuana posts you normally see.
