- darthsand, on 07/09/2009, -3/+41No hockey will ever be as exciting as watching Joe Sakic and Peter Forsberg and even Alex Tanguay take on the New Jersey devils in a 7 game series for the cup.
Joe, you are a champion and a hero!
#19 forever! - cameycam, on 07/09/2009, -0/+26The NHL just won't be the same we've lost one of the all time greats and one the classiest guys to ever play the game.
- WillWork4Food, on 07/10/2009, -0/+20The captain of the Stanley Cup winning team traditionally hoists the cup first and takes the victory lap.
Av's captain Joe Sakic handed the cup to Ray Bourque after the 2001 win over the Devils so that he could be the first to hoist it and take the victory lap.
Class doesn't come any classier than Super Joe. - hexx54, on 07/09/2009, -0/+17One of the classiest players to ever suit up in the NHL, farewell Joe!
- tamtamg, on 07/09/2009, -0/+15Even a die hard Red Wings fan like myself will admit Joe Sakic is a great player who did nothing but exemplify class during his entire career. It's sad to see Joe go. Seems like all my childhood hockey heroes are now gone from the game.
- hockeygiant2, on 07/09/2009, -0/+12Man, what a career. I always enjoyed watching Sakic play. So glad they're retiring his number, too. He deserves it! Have fun in retirement, Joe!
- CB810, on 07/09/2009, -2/+13How was this story not submitted by HabsChick?
- DoShurikn, on 07/09/2009, -0/+11I'm from Quebec city, home of the team before they moved to Colorado and I can tell you he was my favorite player when he was here as well. He'll be a big loss for the league and the sport.
They are talking about doing his jersey retirement ceremony here as well. - TM22, on 07/09/2009, -0/+11I didn't.
- kinseyincanada, on 07/09/2009, -0/+10He is one of the best, cheers to burnaby Joe.
- aychseven, on 07/10/2009, -1/+11i dunno man, the wings / avs playoff games in the late 90s was to me more exciting
- bmcnally, on 07/10/2009, -0/+9Class act player, shame to see him go. Exciting to see him face off against Yzerman (the other 19) - best of luck, Joe!
-Wings fan - DelSolMan, on 07/09/2009, -0/+9I was looking forward to locker-room confusion with the new coach Joe Sacco
- nicfit, on 07/10/2009, -0/+8Sakic is pure class.
- aychseven, on 07/10/2009, -0/+7one of the most respectable individuals in the history of pro sports.
- cobalt8888, on 07/10/2009, -0/+6I think there are more Wings fans leaving comments than Avs fans, and I'll continue the trend. As a Wings fan, I don't have to like the guy, but I certainly respect him. Happy retirement Joe.
- Lososaurus, on 07/10/2009, -0/+5And then getting to see Super Joe pass The Cup straight to Ray Bourque without lifting it himself. Talk to any Hockey fan and they'll have nothing but good things to say about Joe Sakic.
Always puts a smile on my face. - canadabluesfan, on 07/10/2009, -0/+5End of an era, he will be missed.
- pocketjacks, on 07/09/2009, -1/+6Enjoy the time off, Joe. Won't say I'll miss you, but you're certainly respected.
- Onethirtytwo, on 07/10/2009, -0/+5Nothing but great things can be said about Sakic, Now the road is paved for Stastny to follow in his foot steps.
- interjuve, on 07/10/2009, -0/+5I think that depends on where you're from. Personally, I still get chills when I see Sakic hand the cup to Bourque or really any highlights of Sakic and Forsberg.
- RATM4EVER, on 07/09/2009, -0/+5Well done, Captain Clutch.
- TheChance, on 07/09/2009, -0/+4Love and miss you, Joe. Thanks for the cups and all the great memories
- ChristianBk, on 07/09/2009, -0/+4A fantastic hockey player and individual - I'm saying this as a Wings fan as well. Joe-potato will be missed!
- TweedleDan, on 07/09/2009, -0/+4say it ain't so Joe!
- Storm27guy, on 07/10/2009, -1/+5I'm a hard core Av's fan and always have been and he has always been there. It just wont be the same without him and he will be sorely missed by not only colorado but all of the NHL. He will be remembered as one of the best players in the NHL as well as one of the classiest. Great career. Great man.
Thanks for the memories. - mecharabbit, on 07/10/2009, -0/+4Same here. He was one of the few Avs players that I didn't hate.
- bromac, on 07/10/2009, -0/+4Sakic was drafted to the Quebec Nordiques, not le Habs. Intraprovincial rivalry, like the Battle of Alberta (Oilers/Flames) and the Battle of Ontario (Sens/Leafs).
- jazzguitar18, on 07/10/2009, -0/+4I am a die hard Av's fan and although I knew this was coming, I just can't help but be sad about not seeing him play again.
- Vodd9, on 07/10/2009, -0/+3It wasn't about the Habs?
- briantodd, on 07/10/2009, -0/+3Pure class, pure talent. One of the best to play the game, he'll be missed!
- sexbobomb, on 07/10/2009, -0/+3What about Sakic and Lemieux in the 2002 Olympics?
- K7Avenger, on 07/09/2009, -2/+5Sakic was great and I have great respect for the man but nothing is more exciting than watching Mario Lemieux and Jagr.
- KDyneria, on 07/10/2009, -0/+3My favourite memory was his clutch playing of the 2002 Olympic finals for team Canada. Hopefully Yzerman can find a spot on the management staff for the 2010 Canadian Olympic team!
- cobalt8888, on 07/10/2009, -0/+3I was just coming to say the same thing. As a Wings fan, I don't have to like the guy, but I certainly do respect him.
- DWillms, on 07/10/2009, -0/+3My favorite player of all time. Stay classy Joe, you'll be missed!
- CotP_DoM, on 07/10/2009, -0/+2Here in Vancouver, we always dreamed of bringing him back. He grew up next door in Burnaby, and his name always came up when talking of players to bring to the team. He certainly was one of the best.
- starkraving, on 07/10/2009, -0/+2Burnaby Joe was always extremely well-represented by friends and family whenever he came to GM Place, a true, class-act BC boy to the end.
- Jeffler, on 07/10/2009, -0/+1Oddly enough, its good to see I've been usurped by HC :P
- Janinco, on 07/14/2009, -0/+1Very sad to see him go.
- wh14890, on 07/10/2009, -1/+1it's been a long time for this guy...great player
http://digg.com/hockey/1989_90_Topps_Joe_Sakic - dokworks, on 07/10/2009, -1/+1Sad to see him go.
I miss the days he used to bury the Wings with that killer snap shot. The puck would be in the net and the Wings would still be looking for it. LOL! - rawkensawken, on 07/09/2009, -1/+1you had to bring that up...
:(
Sakic was one of the greats. - bubbakja, on 07/10/2009, -2/+1Esp when the avs lost !
- Turbojugend27, on 07/09/2009, -4/+1True except for the Forsberg part.
- jasdf, on 07/09/2009, -11/+4At first I thought it said after 20 seconds.
- dinglebutt, on 07/09/2009, -26/+0Hockey was never exciting.
