- thatsmyaibo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+42"Does anyone still watch Hockey outside of Canada?"
Here in Los Angeles (possibly the least hockey appreciated city due to our lack of winter and it's sports), we sell out every King's game...no matter how bad they are. - jaredvolkl, on 10/12/2007, -1/+39Wicked cool! Now I know what I can do when I'm bored at work.
- ace277, on 10/12/2007, -0/+31this is awesome, hopefully its a sign of things to come with the nhl and other sports
- slimer369, on 10/12/2007, -0/+22Good for Google and the NHL. I hope the games are commentated on by the home town announcers and not the crappy OLN/Versus guys
I really wish MLB and the NFL would take a page from the NHL's book. You can listen to games for free and get all the game highlights from NHL.com for free. No dice for that MLB and NFL.
Let's go Buffalo! - These guys are good.....Scary Good! - CBTF, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13What? Since when was hocket not popular?
Trust me, it makes enough money here in toronto alone, haha. - Noah0504, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10I think this is a brilliant move by the NHL. I just wish the NFL and MLB would follow with something that's free like this.
- webbsk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10As a proud hockey loving Canuck, all I can say is "God Bless Google"!
- icedman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9great news for hockey fans.....I just hope they start releasing some higher def vids.
- jasper976, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11awesome, except low-quality flash = where the ***** is the puck? i tried to watch a little, but it' kinda makes me sick
- xocomil, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Actually OMG... has a point. The PBR (Professional Bull Riding) is replacing hockey on the major networks because they get higher ratings (in the US) than even the Stanley Cup. I think the NHL looks at this as a way of saying "Here are concrete numbers for the number of fans who enjoy watching hockey. Now put the Stanley Cup back on one of the major networks." I'm actually sad to see hockey disappear from TV. I love watching the Grizzlies here in Salt Lake and they are just a minor league team. The speed and athleticism of the real pros is impressive. I wish hockey would get more fans in the US so maybe Salt Lake would pick up a pro team. Hell, I'd even trade our crappy basketball AND soccer team for one middle tier hockey team, but I think I'm in the minority on that one.
- shlemielo, on 10/12/2007, -5/+13He's got a point though...for most people, hockey in person >> hockey on TV, by a long shot. Hockey on the internet? Good move by the NHL, but probably won't boost popularity that much.
- Tanpreet, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8@OMGWTFROFLMAO:
don't get your panties all in a bunch just because your favorite sport isn't on Google video for free - funkspiel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Once you watch hockey on a good high-def. screen, it's hard to watch otherwise.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9If your favourite restaurant isn't big, or the place that "everyone goes to", is it less of a restaurant to you? Why is it always the first argument against hockey that it isn't big where you happen to be? Indeed, there is a rest of the world, and many places where hockey is popular. But the bigger question is: Why do you rate an entire sport with a hundred years of professional history, on it's... vanity?
- npinski, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10OH. MY. GOD.
[cums in pants hardd] - KnightMareInc, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7thats pretty cool
- sardion2000, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Not even a real sport? Funny, I think the same thing whenever I see a boxing match or a baseball game on TV.
Oh yeah, with the new rules and salary cap, the fans are coming back. Don't worry, when Global Warming plunges us all into an Ice Age, everyone will be playing hockey, even the Mexicans lol. - gamasutra, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6It's a loss leader for two weeks, then 2.99. Still, I'd be tempted if I lived in Timbuktu.
- ta10n, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Total "American" viewership? Up here in canuckistan, just about everybody I know watches the game.
- CkMaverick, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I am driving 4 hours to see the Kings vs. Sharks just before Thanksgiving and I don't mind in the least. Would do anything for a Kings game; best sport on earth.
- thatsmyaibo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Buffalo is a little too amazing. Surprisingly Anaheim has the same amount of points and is chosen cup winner which, as a King's fan pisses me off...damn cross town rivals and their winning.
- argblat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5AWESOME
- SCarrier11, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4oh *****! best deal ever!
- jonathantneal, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Yea, totally - Google knows how to sell ads, and that's how videos make money. The old strategy actually works in a funny way on the internet.
- Shawnosaurus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Right on. I hope they are uploaded rather close to the actual game time.
The game I watched was commentated by Rogers Sportnet. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Looks awesome, but how often do they update this? Not to bring it down, but Leafs last played Nov. 1st, but the newest leafs game up there is October 18.
If google and nhl could update more frequently they could really dominate in this, as no other national sport has attempted to do something like this.
I'm curious on how this will turn out... - jj9000, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4The games on Google are posted a couple of days after the fact. You can watch them live, though:
A P2P app from China called TVU lets users stream their TV channels to people... for instance NHL Centre Ice. There's a decent hockey community going there with a couple of people streaming, but keep in mind it is free for us, and people are doing it out of their pocket.. so be nice to them:

http://www.viidoo.tv/en/download.php - modifiedbears, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Following the puck is hard enough on a standard def tv, this is worse than that. HD hockey is the only way to watch.
- zentro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4This is amazing news!
Oh wait, "We're sorry, but the provider of this video has not authorized Google to display this video in your location" - hmm, better fire up that Tor proxy-thingy! - namenotused, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4No need to go through a proxy. This is also for other people that commented on not being able to view them because of their location. Here's how to view them, use Google's own translate mechanism to get around it.
Go to:
http://www.google.com/language_tools?hl=en
Then enter in the url of the video you want to watch in the "Translate a web page" box.
Then translate from Spanish to English or something, it doesn't matter. Translating from anything to English won't change anything since it's already in english. However, because the page is going through google's servers, the video page now thinks you are in that location. Watch away. - marnaq, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Second that (.se). Kinda lame.
- Tanpreet, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4hey maybe there will be some Hockey Night In Canada feeds up on Google Video! then possibly they could leave the "coaches corner" segment in there! Oh the possibilities!!!!
- mattyj, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Take the train to Kings games! Save yourself 20 bucks on parking.
And maybe the NHL doesn't seem too popular in LA because a million or so people here root for a football team that hasn't played here in 10 years, but if you *play* hockey you'll see it's as popular as ever here, especially down in the OC.
Good: listening to Kings games on the Radio.
Better: watching Kings games on TV.
Even better: watching Kings games live.
Best: playing hockey yourself. Pick up a stick and do it!
-mattyj - jasnmb, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5I seriously doubt the NFL would ever do this considering the big bucks they are getting from the fox/cbs/nbc/espn/local market contracts...and then there is of course the NFL Network.
- cstrike006, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3im really happy about this...and the quality seems pretty good
- ozid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Lets go Pens!!! :D
- fnaqzna, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6Yeah... hockey in person >> hockey on tv, but hockey on tv >> driving 2-3 hours to see the Kings play.
- Rochmndx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3This just rules!
- budshonda, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Awesome. I love hockey and now I can watch all of the Stars games at work! :) GO STARS
- LordStandley, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3YYYEEESSSSSS!!!!!
I can finally watch hockey again. Thank god google finally did something right with there video service. - CyrusG, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3This is great to see (well, not literally). The only reason I have cable is to watch the Canucks -- I just hope this deal lasts.
- chaosmachine, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3there's a download button.. use the dropdown to select "video ipod/psp video". it gives you a nice 400mb mp4 file :)
- Uhhh, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3THIS IS AWESOME. WORK WILL NEVER BE THE SAME.
- OddyOh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This is a very cool first step, but what I really want is live streaming...then it's bye bye cable! I would pay for a decent quality Quicktime feed of every Leaf game.
- smock514, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yahoo! Sports has had live streaming of around 3-4 games per week all season. Not a full selection, sadly, but better than nothing? If you want to see what the quality is like and whether it's worth watching, you can check out the Rangers/Sharks game in around 30 minutes.
http://sports.yahoo.com/nhl - pad22, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Bob Cole and Harry Neale on Leafs games. Nice.
- scorpshockey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Comca$t High Speed customers can see up to two select out of market NHL games per day streamed live. http://www.comcast.net/sports/nhl/hockeylive/
Buffalo @ Boston is live now (NESN feed) and Rangers @ Sharks goes live at 10:30. (Either FSN Prime Ticket or MSG feed) - andrew.bell, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Google Video has RSS feeds hidden.
Here is a RSS feed for Oiler games. Add it to iTunes.
http://video.google.com/videofeed?type=search&q=owner%3Anhl+oilers&hl=en&output=rss - chkltcow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Freakin NICE baby! The one thing I'll miss, however, are commercials.
YES, that's right, I said I'll miss commercials. A few years ago before I got married, I had NHL Center Ice. One of the things that was so cool about watching those games was seeing the random local ads from all over the US and Canada. - CapeKid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I am away at college, one of the things I missed most was Rangers hockey. Huzzah for Google.
