- sstidman, on 11/21/2008, -0/+2In the 60s we had massive advances in rockets and space craft and everyone understood the significance of the achievements.
In the 70s, the massive advances were in the field of electronics, and everyone understood the significance.
In the 80s it was computers. In the 90s it was communications.
In this decade, massive advances are being made in the medical and biotechnology fields, but I don't think people really understand the significance of the achievements that have already been made or the potential for the things that are still in the lab. Every other field had their heros and legends that are known by the average person (i.e. Neil Armstrong, Bill Gates, etc), but I would guess that the average person would not know the name of a single person who has brought us some recent major advance in the medical or biotechnology fields. And the reason for that is that people don't understand and don't care to learn about what is going on there. And I don't really hear anyone outside of those fields calling for increased spending to accelerate advances in those fields. We still have people wanting to spend insane amounts of money on the space program. I like the space program, but it seems to me like our lives would benefit more by investing that money in the research that is being done now to reverse engineer the human body. It's not unrealistic to imagine that many diseases could be cured in our lifetime if we took the initiative to invest in those fields now. How about a Manhattan Project style effort to end breast cancer / AIDS / insert your favorite disease here?
I guess I don't understand why we don't cheer those scientists and their advancements like we did in past decades for other fields. I know you hear about them on Digg, but it's odd that none of those scientists are household names given the importance of some of the things they have created and problems they have solved. - richgustavson, on 11/21/2008, -0/+2This is relevant to my interests.
