I just can't think of why a higher pain threshold, for women, would be evolutionarily beneficial. For men, I could see it - nature rewards the expendable male humans for risk-taking, and a higher pain threshold would be conducive to that end. Doesn't really count as enduring pain in the same way since it's such a specific situation, a situation female bodies are designed to cope with by producing insane amounts of natural stimulants and pain killers.

Lying on your back is about the worst way to have a baby as far as pain is concerned, because in that position the baby pushes tremendously on the spine. Squatting, kneeling or on all fours is best, but how many doctors would want to be underneath a squatting woman when she's having a baby?

Some women pop out the baby in 5 minutes; others undergo days of hard labor; still others would have had a relatively easy time if not for complications or other extenuating factors.

What's happening is the uterus is getting rid of the nutrient rich lining because no fetus is growing there and it needs to make a new lining for the next month. Sheesh I thought they taught this stuff in high school.

The role of oxytocin is most likely an evolutionary trait, so that women want to have another baby and only remember the good feeling of having a baby and the emotional connection that is created as a result of oxytocin.

BTW: To the first post. I've been in the room while it was happening. Childbirth is EXTREMELY painful. The only thing that kept getting me through it was the payoff. And truthfully...that's nothing compared to the pain as the child grows up that they can give you. (Sorry kids...call your Mother)
- Rahodeb, on 08/26/2008, -5/+11That certain part of their anatomy is designed to stretch, to a point. Don't get me wrong, it looks like it hurts, but my wife delivered 2 children with no pain killers and came out smiling. Exhausted, but happy.
Also, conveniently, I've heard that the body released both pleasure chemicals, and other chemicals that reduce memory of the occasion. Must be for survival of the species.
As for women getting prescription pain medication less often, I don't believe it. Everytime my wife gets a hangnail, they throw vicodin at her. I'd have to be missing half an arm, and they'd still look at me like some kind of junkie if I ask for it. - siszam, on 08/26/2008, -3/+9Dr. Reid never had nine hours of back labor (instead of having pains normally you have all your labor pain in your back and it feels like your back is breaking) without the benefit of pain medication. And I'm pretty sure he never laid there screaming as a doctor sewed up his episiotomy after the local wore off. Dr. Reid sounds willfully ignorant.

- ixid, on 08/26/2008, -0/+5There seems to be a lot of hoopla about this, I think it's actually not the pain threshold but that a lot of red heads have higher resistance to some anesthetics. I'm a guy with red hair and have experienced this once when getting stitches, the doctor would inject some anesthetic, ask if I could feel the needle when poked and I kept feeling it until I'd had a number of times the normal local dose. I don't think I have unusually low nor high pain tolerance though.
