- deadowl, on 10/11/2007, -6/+277My GOD she needs a doctor before her damn feet start falling off.
- coinman987, on 10/11/2007, -30/+264it's probably made in China
- mazerrackham, on 10/11/2007, -7/+196Sweet. I'm headed over to walmart right now to "try on" some sandals. I'll just shuffle around the store in them for a few hours...you know, give the chemical plenty of time to disfigure my feet. I can't see this being anything but profitable in the long run.
- relaxeder, on 04/17/2009, -21/+205you goddamn americans don't know a good product when you see them
our frip frops are made from highest quarity materiars - sbolanos, on 10/11/2007, -11/+166EDIT - I'm stupid.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -34/+150Walmart needs to be held responsible, but wasn't it unintelligent to keep putting those sandals back on day after day after noticing what they were doing?
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -39/+144I want to know what kind of person *continues* wearing shoes after it's obvious that they're *burning* their damned feet....?!?
- ImNotDrewCurtis, on 10/11/2007, -7/+90That's more than disturbing. I wonder what sort of special ingredients the manufacturer put in the mix. What did they find in toothpaste earlier this year? Antifreeze stuff?
At any rate, I'd like to see a follow up on this article. - arobar, on 10/11/2007, -1/+84I want to know what kind of person comments on an article without reading it at all.... ?!?
She didn't keep wearing them, the burn just kept getting worse. If you don't treat a chemical burn it doesn't just go away. Plus she thought it was just irritation. She only wore them for two days and then stopped after she realized it was more serious than some simple skin rash. - Aroundtheworls, on 10/11/2007, -3/+76Looks like she's allergic to the Polyurethane upper in the sandal as the bottom is made from EVA foam and she doesn't seem to have the same reaction. If this was something specific to the sandals then we'd see an epidemic of this happening as I'm sure Wal-Mart sold these things by the millions.
She should see an allergy specialist... And getting a pedicure wouldn't hurt too! - lonegeek, on 10/11/2007, -5/+77"...I figured that it was just because it was first flip flops of the year so my feet need to get used to them. "
Maybe you should have read the story. - grav3k33p3r, on 10/11/2007, -6/+75Holy crap! The Consumerist story here:
http://consumerist.com/consumer/dangerous-defects/woman-receives-severe-chemical-burns-from-flip-flops-walmart-tells-her-to-complain-to-manufacturer-280572.php - NSMike, on 10/11/2007, -4/+69I don't think she continued to wear them... It may be that whatever chemical caused the burn is not easily removed with soap and water and may still be there, continuing to burn her.
- aylwin, on 10/11/2007, -1/+57Makes you wonder what happened to the hands of the kid making those sandals.
- zebragrrl, on 10/11/2007, -8/+63Gods, I had similar chemical burns as a child, from a cheap resin (plastic) watchband.
Remember, when you first buy a new pair of shoes, especially flipflops, you expect a little irritation, so it's easy to see how she might have kept wearing them a few days.before it became obvious it was more than the ususal irritation. - Error601, on 10/11/2007, -13/+67I don't see anyone qualified saying anything about chemical burns. Some people are allergic to latex but that doesn't mean there's anything wrong with using it.
- bobsacks, on 10/11/2007, -5/+55Google cache has it if the link goes down - http://209.85.165.104/search?q=cache:pcIIcsGYWEAJ:www.lamanaphotography.com/walmart.htm+http://www.lamanaphotography.com/walmart.htm&hl=en&ct=clnk&cd=1&gl=us
- houndeyex, on 10/11/2007, -4/+53"Does this look infected?"
- rendereduseless, on 10/11/2007, -17/+66her toes are terrible
- h3ndrix, on 10/11/2007, -27/+65***** Walmart.
- deaddogdays, on 10/11/2007, -23/+60Walmart also sells peanuts and they can kill many people.
If you know you're hypersensitive to a certain product, avoid it. Do you use it, photograph the results during continued use of said product, and expect a huge paycheck accompanied with internet sympathy.
This is not a quality control issue; it's a baited lawsuit. - merreborn, on 10/11/2007, -4/+42"Well, after wearing them my feet would be red and sort of tingly, but I figured that it was just because it was first flip flops of the year so my feet need to get used to them... I have only worn those shoes 15 minutes here, half an hour there, hour there...and so on, NOT enough time to burn my feet like this!"
Sounds like she stopped once it progressed to a state where it got really bad. A really caustic chemical on your skin will continue to eat away at you for days after exposure. - ryanknapper, on 10/11/2007, -4/+41Yes, as it says at the bottom of the page.
- shark615, on 10/11/2007, -4/+39Disgusting.
Anyway first of all in one pic she looks like she has dog that is practically licking her foot. Good idea.
Secondly she didn't get a proper doctors or professionals opinion. It could be an infection or more likely a severe allergic reaction to latex or something.
Just saying chemical burn with no comprehensive proof is stupid. - matude, on 10/11/2007, -1/+33We can all see and read the numbers..
- DeathSun, on 10/11/2007, -1/+31Umm...that it doesn't burn off our skin, for starters.
You know...just off the top of my head. - zydeco, on 10/11/2007, -2/+31It will end when you (meaning the general public) stop shopping at Wal-Mart, or any other store, just because the prices are "cheapest" without paying attention to the origin and composition of the goods.
- hansk, on 10/11/2007, -60/+86if the shoes started to burn your feet, why did u keep wearing them?
- aliengoods, on 10/11/2007, -5/+31I'm reading these threads and don't understand why people are surprised. Wal-mart doesn't care about you or any other customer, and they have the lawyers to fend off any possible lawsuit. I've completely stopped shopping at Wal-mart. I probably spend an extra $40 per month on various goods at places like Target, Home Depot, K-Mart, etc, but the quality is much higher than Wal-mart. I bought a stainless steel tea kettle at Wal-mart. The spot welds on the handle busted off after a week of use. There is no quality in that store anymore.
- Insomnya3AM, on 10/11/2007, -0/+24You obviousry didn't get the joke, retard.
- qwertydvorak, on 10/11/2007, -1/+25don't forget to brush your teeth also.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+24hope your a chick cause they were women's sandals ; )
- jgzman, on 10/11/2007, -1/+23Let's skip the 'probably' and RTFA. It says clearly that they were made in China.
Idle speculation is unacceptable when the facts are directly in front of you. - digggggggggg, on 10/11/2007, -1/+22I'm here wondering: what the hell is wrong with these people? Don't they know that their cutting of every corner is going to screw someone else over?
- 16777216, on 10/11/2007, -2/+23After reading TFA it would seem that she thought the uncomfortableness was due to her feet "needing to get used to them" and was unaware the flip-flops were burning her feet, as a mater of fact she thought it was a rash until a second woman who had the same problem informed her that it was a chemical burn.
- imkoreansowhat, on 10/11/2007, -6/+27hahaha. On the letter that she got from Wal-mart, it says "something concerning your thongs."
- gregdogum, on 10/11/2007, -41/+62Why did she continue to wear the sandals? She needs to put on some socks/shoes with nasty looking feet like that.
- gernblansted, on 10/11/2007, -2/+23It amazes me that some people don't understand how expensive health insurance is for a single individual or family not covered by a larger plan from an employer or other established group. It also amazes me that there are still people out there who think anyone can just buy health insurance when in fact if you have any pre-existing conditions or are too old (or... or... or... list is just to big to post here) you will be turned away with no recourse. It amazes me that the marketing paid for by insurance companies and HMOs is so effective as to confuse people into believing that anyone can have insurance it if they just worked and chose to purchase it. And who really needs a car anyway? This country has plenty of mass transit. In some cities. At least in the past. Well, there's always the Bus. Which stops 2 miles from here, and will only get you within 3 miles of your work. I've had that happen to me before.
- endgame, on 10/11/2007, -23/+44Americans DEMAND cheap products, what do you expect?
- Zaggynl, on 10/11/2007, -0/+21fail
- crackah, on 10/11/2007, -12/+32foot fetish eat your heart out.
- TheNapalm, on 10/11/2007, -12/+32thats pretty bad, walmart is going downhill, i guess the shouldnt rely on chinese sweat shop labor for their cheap ass products anymore
- laurarena, on 10/11/2007, -1/+21she DIDN'T. read the article.
- Aroundtheworls, on 10/11/2007, -25/+44Someone hoping for a laaaarge payout perhaps?
- jsmith39, on 10/11/2007, -0/+19Well yeah, now it does. Thanks.
- Shorties, on 10/11/2007, -2/+20That would be when one would expect a site to go down.
- ScrewedThePooch, on 10/11/2007, -0/+18anymore?
- luft, on 10/11/2007, -3/+20This isn't a chemical burn. It's contact dermatitis-an ALLERGIC REACTION. (I know she says she isn't allergic to rubber or latex, it is probably some other product in the material that is doing it) That's why you aren't hearing stories about thousands of people getting these burns from walmart sandals. Because they don't do this to the vast majority of people. Pure hype.
- adolfojp, on 10/11/2007, -6/+23Perhaps she has no health insurance.
- AcidPhysx, on 10/11/2007, -2/+19You get the "milk out of the nose" comment of the day award! Congratulations!
