- RockSlice, on 08/28/2008, -4/+38"The [wisdom] tooth is usually discarded into trash, so there are no ethical concerns,"
That argument doesn't seem to dissuade the people arguing against embryonic stem cell research. - TheAmazingBob, on 08/28/2008, -2/+21So I can grow babies in my mouth?
- lordmike, on 08/28/2008, -1/+10I TOLD my dentist I didn't want my wisdom teeth out... but nooooooooo.... now, my stem cells are rotting in a landfill somewhere... just great!
- mrzeero, on 08/28/2008, -1/+10Just ***** great! I had mine removed 15 years ago. *****! *****!
- shoc, on 08/28/2008, -1/+9Being a biology student, I'll tell you that bone marrow stem cells and embryonic stem cells are different. Embryonic stem cells are pluripotent, that is, they can become any type (well, ALMOST any) of cell. Where as bone marrow stem cells are specialized, they can only become certain type of cells, such as blood cells, etc.
I don't know where you got the idea that bone marrow stem cells show more promise than embryonic. Embryonic stem cells are MUCH more useful, having the ability to grow into any type of tissue.
If you really need a source for this info, just check wikipedia. - darkciti2, on 08/28/2008, -3/+10They removed my Wisdom teeth!
- zenithmbr, on 08/28/2008, -2/+8that's cool, but i getter get compensated for my teef if they're using them for enterprise
- skeletorcares, on 08/28/2008, -8/+14Science is the best. Republicans try to keep them down, then the scientists just science them out of their nascar shirts. Yeah, i just used science as a verb, live with it.
- Wyrmfell, on 08/28/2008, -3/+8Uh, this was in Japan, where they have no Republican Party. Maybe that's why they're so ahead of us...
- dtfinch, on 08/28/2008, -0/+4Too late. :-(
- Intrusionv2, on 08/28/2008, -1/+5Not sure why you are getting buried, you're speaking the truth.
- LukeBeaumont, on 08/28/2008, -0/+4shoc is exactly right, coming from another Biology student. The only cell that beats embryonic stem cells is the gametes themselves, from memory.
- newms32, on 08/28/2008, -0/+3And the money isn't coming because the Republicans are holding back federal funding. Some people believe a clump of cells is equivalent to a giggling baby.
- kayjay, on 08/28/2008, -0/+3AAAAAAAAAAH, thats why the TOOTH FAIRY is crazy about teeth.
- itsfunny, on 08/28/2008, -0/+3America has done a top notch job of tarnishing the reputation of stem cell research in recent years. Anyone with even the slightest knowledge of genetics would know that stem cell therapy is capable of curing and abolishing many of the worst genetic diseases known to man, but the lack of research in the US has seriously hindered the progress of this science. Why does America dislike the idea of stem cell research? Stem cell therapy can and will be used to CURE diseases. Unfortunately, there's little money in cures. The money lies in treatments. If we were able to produce a "one-shot" vaccine for cancer, the American healthcare system would lose millions and millions of dollars each year. The world revolves around money.
- biotch, on 08/28/2008, -0/+2but they do, however, have scientists :)
- Vikaas, on 08/28/2008, -0/+2Not worth it.
- offthewagon, on 08/28/2008, -0/+2Don't smoke. I picked an organ at random.
- SubjectiveC, on 08/28/2008, -1/+3Are my baby teeth even more valuable, seeing as they are closer to embryo teeth and possibly yield more stem cells?
Why, yes, I have my anatomical facts in order. Why do you ask? - zer0nix, on 08/28/2008, -0/+2japan is our top foreign investor.
i'm not sure where that goes, but i'm just throwing it out there. - Pirate45, on 08/28/2008, -2/+4This is wonderful news! This means that those who are morally opposed to embryonic stem cell research can join together with those in support of this type of research since there is no embryo being destroyed.
- swook, on 08/28/2008, -1/+2Hmmn. It's like the Hogfather.
- skeletorcares, on 08/28/2008, -1/+2in case you haven't noticed, the republican party tries to control everything. everywhere. and where do you think a large chunk of the money in the world is?
- j3one, on 08/28/2008, -2/+3Cool.
Now what do I do with all these fetuses...
(and yes "fetuses" is correct plural usage in this case)
(Oh god why am I defending my pluralization!? Everyone knows that it has roots in Greek not Latin right?!?) - Vikaas, on 08/28/2008, -1/+2Dang it! Anybody know when you grow your second set?
- Gbobrt4, on 08/28/2008, -1/+2I love cherry-filled donuts with a glass of milk.
- youngcheesey, on 06/29/2009, -0/+1Damn, I should have kept mine in. My doctor is probably raking in millions of unclaimed wisdom teeth
- afruff23, on 08/28/2008, -0/+1Without the wisdom, you wouldn't know how to work in stem cell research. And without the stem cells, there is no stem cell research.
- yyymilitia, on 08/28/2008, -2/+3Sure, you can have my dental pulp.
- montanask8, on 08/28/2008, -1/+2just stop smoking...
- TheMachine1, on 08/28/2008, -0/+1Still got my lower wisdom teeth (My upper back teeth seem prone to deterioration).
Anyway there is an old saying "when you get your wisdom teeth removed half your life is gone/left". - Philbert, on 08/28/2008, -0/+1I can just picture the scientists pestering the one dentist they have on reserve:
Scientist: "Come on, we need more teeth!"
Dentist: "I'm sorry nobody has needed wisdom teeth removed lately"
Scientist: "I don't care, just get us more teeth!" - bentrinh, on 08/28/2008, -0/+1embryonic stem cell =/= Adult stem cell
- trunkster, on 08/28/2008, -0/+1I asked to keep mine and still have them. 4 1ups for me.
- itsfunny, on 08/28/2008, -0/+1Lol. That was actually quite funny. xD
- kendrah, on 08/28/2008, -0/+1So thats why they kept mine....
lol. - zer0nix, on 08/28/2008, -0/+1clearly they're using them to fund a holy WAAAAAGH. how do you feel about that?
...I think a curse should rest on me, because I love this WAAAAAGH. I know it's smashing and shattering the lives of thousands every moment, and yet, I can't help it. I enjoy every second of it. - mattlohkamp, on 08/28/2008, -1/+2durrr
- someology, on 08/28/2008, -0/+1geez, I hope not, since they surgically removed mine when I was 17, while they were still down in the jawbone, below the surface. This is commonly done in the US for teenagers who have already had orthodontic braces. Often there isn't room for the wisdom teeth to come in without shoving the other molars around out of alignment.
- Roland1232, on 08/28/2008, -0/+1When you stop masturbating.
- tmaromine, on 08/28/2008, -2/+2And just a month ago I had mine removed, due to God's incompetence at Intelligently Designing things "Perfectly" (so God had his removed to, right?). I'm sure the lunatics down in the rightwing will still find away to call it sinful and immoral or whatever they blabber about. After all, it's not like humanity should ever be nearer to curing holy Godgiven (or just not curedbyGod?) diseases that kill us.
- montanask8, on 08/28/2008, -1/+1Now you can tell your kids to brush their stem cells before they go to bed.
- SheepLicker, on 08/28/2008, -1/+1Holy *****, my mouth is a ***** gold mine!
- UnicornPow3R, on 08/28/2008, -0/+0Haha, I kept my wisdom teeth! All four of 'em...I SHALL LIVE FOOOOOREVER!!
- dhVyse, on 08/28/2008, -1/+1Take mine! "Why aren't we funding this!" - Peter Griffon
- RyeBrye, on 08/28/2008, -1/+1I'm glad they found a way to make more fat.
- Bex5, on 08/28/2008, -0/+0I'm getting a few wisdom teeth taken out next week, does that mean I can just put them in the freezer and store them for when my liver inevitably dies?
- bffoley, on 08/28/2008, -2/+2You can't use your wisdom teeth for stem cells because Jesus says you cant!
SINNERRRRRRRRRSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! - andyd273, on 08/28/2008, -1/+1Just what we need, another way to get fat cells...
Anyway, morally there is a huge difference between embryonic stem cells and stem cells taken from other sources (cord blood, skin, wisdom teeth). For most stem cells you just harvest a few cells from different sources, no problems. But for embryonic stem cells a life has to end, but it's only A Modest Proposal... -
