"A 35-year-old nonsmoking man is five times as likely to die in an accident before 45 as he is to die of heart disease"
Anyone with half a brain would have already thought to themselves; But is a heart disease really the only problem associated with smoking? Clue up. - Phisolo, on 09/08/2008, -1/+5no chart, no digg.
- jraymonds, on 09/08/2008, -0/+4The charts are FREE in the supplemental material:
http://jnci.oxfordjournals.org/cgi/content/full/dj ... - 0tis, on 09/08/2008, -0/+4If you read the article, it does say that the statistics show that smoking increases your risk of death. What I think you read is the bit that says that *past a certain age* the risk of death by heart disease is about the same for smokers as for non-smokers. However, it also says that a 35-year old smoker is SEVEN times as likely to die from heart disease as a 35-year old non-smoker. So, that's not really defending Big Tobacco's "death sticks", is it?
I for one would prefer it if the article linked to the damn charts though. - Nyper, on 09/08/2008, -0/+4The 'chart' isn't even included in this article? Glad I wasted my 30 seconds clicking and scanning that.. buried for being worthless.
- cygnus2112, on 09/08/2008, -0/+3Funny how it's a Chris Rock routine.

- slickrocktrail, on 09/08/2008, -0/+3You always hear of guys dying of a heart attack while exercising (jogging mostly), but you never hear of a guy dying in the smoking section of Denny's while eating bacon and eggs.
- poet, on 09/08/2008, -0/+2Stop abusing the comma.
- bobbknight, on 09/08/2008, -1/+3Add to that eat red meat!
- Fhwqhgads, on 09/08/2008, -2/+4Wow, Big Tobacco funded studies are certainly getting desperate to defend their death sticks.
- D4CH, on 09/08/2008, -1/+3Nice script you got there, SirPopper
- bipolarruledout, on 09/08/2008, -0/+2Right, because there are no other factors other than the select life style choices listed. I hate statistics.
- SuomynonaEno, on 09/08/2008, -1/+3true that.

- inactive, on 09/09/2008, -0/+1I have a chart saying exactly when all of you will die. Of course, I'm only going to mention the existence of the chart, and not show any of the contents.
- leonardutah, on 09/09/2008, -0/+1"The median isn't the message."
Stephen J. Gould - jmac825, on 09/08/2008, -0/+1Did you know 90% of statistics are 100% accurate, 25% of the time?
Silliness aside, take it with a grain of salt. - dumpyhumpy, on 09/08/2008, -0/+1...dude, if you haven't figured it out by now I guess you never will, but the will it blend meme was old and tired a year ago. let it go, man, let it go.

- AndrewMoyer, on 09/08/2008, -0/+1This article reminded me of those annoying word problems in math class back in school...
FTA: "A 55-year-old man who smokes is as likely to die in the next 10 years as a 65-year-old who has never smoked. Less than 1 woman in 1,000 younger than 50 will die in the next decade from cervical cancer. A 35-year-old nonsmoking man is five times as likely to die in an accident before 45 as he is to die of heart disease, and a 35-year-old woman is twice as likely to die accidentally by 45 as she is to die from breast cancer."
Who will die first, the 35-year-old woman or the 55-year-old male smoker? -
