- LordReven, on 08/30/2008, -3/+203Why? Probably because the strawberry jam makers aren't sending a monetary kickback to the government.
- Harbinger1080, on 08/30/2008, -1/+197I know I have tried to quit strawberry jam several times... I just can't seem to kick it.
- Paul101590, on 08/30/2008, -3/+104Because strawberry jam can kill you.
- cygnus2112, on 08/30/2008, -1/+95Many die from second-hand jelly.
- engrishGamer, on 08/30/2008, -5/+63Well I guess they figure people who use products with tobacco know the health risk involved so why try to make "safer" something with the potential to be deadly?
- Rileyluck, on 08/30/2008, -0/+44obviously you haven't heard of the 1928 strawberry jam scandal
- Paranoidmarvin, on 08/30/2008, -0/+43I demand the highest quality jam, and so should you.
Accept no compromises! - jbmcb, on 08/30/2008, -0/+40Even though you're joking, you're actually correct. Improperly jarred food can grow botulin, which can kill you dead. The problem is with large jarring facilities is if one jar is screwed up, usually a thousand jars are screwed up, too.
- ZeroOrDie, on 08/30/2008, -3/+42Because cigarettes help control the population.
- obscenesteve, on 08/30/2008, -1/+32Nah... I think it's more likely due to the dangerous addictive potential posed by strawberry jam, and the comparatively low impact that cigarettes have on one's health.
- andydumi, on 08/30/2008, -0/+21Because those have to work at saving you. With tobacco, they have to work at killing you...
- NegativeDigg, on 08/30/2008, -3/+24Man, don't get me started on peanut butter. It's like crack! I always carry my peanut butter spoon just in case. Strawberry is just a gateway drug.
- SplicedUp, on 08/30/2008, -0/+21Exactly, I'd be pretty ***** mad if I found out that my strawberry jam was killing me, but if I smoked cigarettes I would already know and accept that they were killing me.
- inactive, on 08/30/2008, -0/+18I still confused why we:
Tax cigarrettes...
Give huge subsidies to farmers for tobacco (sometimes paying them NOT to grow anything)
Then give money to campaigns to prevent smoking
#@#$!?!?
Are we just being over run by lobbyists on all fronts and not looking at this as a big picture? - nabhanc, on 08/30/2008, -0/+16The lack of Animal Collective references is seriously disappointing.
- Derelict267, on 08/30/2008, -2/+16Whoa buddy, take a cig break.
- inactive, on 08/30/2008, -4/+16Probably because only a dumbass doesn't know cigarettes will kill you. It's like regulating rat poison for consumption. Pretty much everyone knows it's bad for you.
- inactive, on 08/30/2008, -8/+20Because we've been warning smokers about tobacco for long enough, if they still won't listen, then tough luck, they can die a slow and painful death for all we care.
Food on the other hand... - tutivlahos, on 08/30/2008, -1/+12Well, do you have a lab in your house?
- Rezistik, on 08/30/2008, -2/+13Finally someone making some sense, I am so tired of my tax dollars going to consumer safety, it should be up to the consumer to research every product they buy and rigorously test every product for poison, I mean honestly who cares what these companies do behind closed doors and what poisons they could sneak in were it not for people like the FDA.
Oh wait I do enjoy not having to do all that and knowing that for the most part I am safe from what people are willing to do to stretch a product for cash... - Terasiel, on 08/30/2008, -1/+12Considering cigarettes are taxed to be almost as expensive as crack at this point, and how you can't find a media outlet that doesn't demonize tobacco like it's terrorism, I'd have to say those who still use it aren't exactly expecting it to be healthy.
- Coded1, on 08/30/2008, -1/+11"botulin, which can kill you dead."
- DogsArePeople2, on 08/30/2008, -0/+9Nah, it's just that you can't smoke jam! Wait.... I'll be right back...
- bincoder, on 08/30/2008, -1/+10Because a little bacteria or virus in your favorite strawberry jam or any other Food you eat can kill you within a few days. Ciggys are self sterilizing and the picosecond that any bacteria or viral contamination gets pulled through the area that is at several thousand degrees, any biologicals get incinerated.
Unless your strange and go around eating them raw.
If you do, its your fault for being strange and eating your cigs.
I guess one could cook strawberry jam up to a few thousand degrees and that would make regulation uneeded, but I bet a good smoke would taste much better. - Noctem, on 08/30/2008, -0/+8Or cigarette flavored jam!
OMG - I think I'm onto something!
Time to figure out a cartoon marketing campaign! - mohsenxp, on 08/30/2008, -0/+8Yes, but what about strawberry flavoured tobacco?
- 12340987, on 08/30/2008, -1/+9I'd rather know what I'm eating than smoke a cigarette.
- inactive, on 08/30/2008, -0/+8Why? Because jam doesn't say poison on the label whereas you are warned that you are about to put lots of ***** in your body by smoking cigarettes.
- fpaudon, on 08/30/2008, -1/+8dugg for making sense
- TheCasablancan, on 08/30/2008, -1/+8@funkyloki
How so?
It's true that smoking causes long term damage, but a single case of food poisoning can kill you in a day or 3 if you don't take care of it. What would happen if we had 100 Million people addicted to the same type of jam? What if they had a sudden recall because someone put extra strength stool softener/laxative in the batch?
I can't amount the amount of ***** we'd all be in. - cdigioia, on 08/30/2008, -0/+6Care to explain that? Did it go over my head or are you just crazy?
- Tarnum, on 08/30/2008, -1/+7I tried strawberry jam once. I did not inhale.
- tjallen, on 08/31/2008, -1/+7Please regulate my entire life. Enough with this free will BS. I know no better.
- inactive, on 08/30/2008, -2/+8Actually I kinda have to agree that botulin or botulism is common in canned foods if nor regulated carefully.
While cigarettes are more lethal over time botulism will kill quite quickly in comparison.
I'm not sure how cigarettes could kill so quickly to be a concern. Everyone knows it kills as well.. not to mention jam is given with peanut butter in sandwiches to children. Are cigarettes being passed out to kids at lunch time as well?
In fact its to the cigarette makers benefit to keep smokers hooks and alive to buy more of their product.
PS- Why regulate something that kills a person anyway. And they know it !! - austinisi, on 08/30/2008, -2/+8I would be very careful regulating anything...it often times has unintended consequences.
Very recently Philip Morris, of all companies, has been PUSHING for regulation of tobacco....hmmm.... From what I've read, they're trying to make it increasingly difficult for new entrants into the tobacco market. They're trying to use government regulation to keep out competition. This may not be the spoken reason for the regulation, but it will have that effect. - inactive, on 08/31/2008, -0/+6*hugs you*
- rotundo, on 08/31/2008, -0/+6Yep, you got it.
- Nayson, on 08/30/2008, -0/+5Why? Because its food perhaps?
- adamantium, on 08/30/2008, -1/+6Soylent Green is made of people...
- str1fe, on 08/30/2008, -0/+5And why can't we have Vegemite in the US? And don't give me that ***** folate garbage.
- gamerfreak1203, on 08/30/2008, -1/+6Why spend the tax dollars to regulate something that is going to kill the consumer anyway?
- rittz, on 08/31/2008, -0/+5I love you along with all the other 10 people on Digg that know who they are.
- RadiatedAnt, on 08/30/2008, -0/+5tribe called quest ftw!
- MWeather, on 08/30/2008, -5/+9Then why do we have regulations for parachutes?
- univerio, on 08/31/2008, -1/+5***** you, two of my friends died from second-hand jelly!
- fantastcandy10, on 08/30/2008, -1/+5to a point, but so far I think consumers are largely uninformed
- ricky125, on 08/30/2008, -3/+7because vegemite taste like ....vegemite.
- Xihix, on 08/30/2008, -0/+4Why is one of my favorite albums restricted?
- theskillwithin, on 08/30/2008, -6/+10Why is marijuana (also a food that contains many benefits like soy) more regulated than cigarettes?
It almost never makes sense but we just don't have the energy to do anything.
we all know cigarettes are probably harmful, we dont think about strawberries. - Sil369, on 08/30/2008, -0/+4Om nom nom nom?
