- shaXian, on 07/23/2008, -0/+28As a person who gets frequent intense migraines, I am thrilled to hear about any advances toward identifying and preventing them. I'm sure I speak for anyone else who also suffers through them, because migraines suck balls.
- majikmixx, on 07/23/2008, -0/+22Apparently, according to the thumbnail, getting your SUV stuck in the mud causes migraines....
- Edudris, on 07/23/2008, -0/+16I'll never forget the day when I missed my last final exam at college due to a Migraine. The Aura struck just as I was waking up at 7:00am for an 8:00am final. The health center didn't open until 9:00am and I wasn't driving myself during an aura to the ER, no less to the exam room to tell the proctor. School refused to accept the reason even when I had my doctor send a letter stating that I've been having migraines with auras for most of my life. I failed the course and had to take a senior 'F' examination.
Those who get migraines know their severity enough to never, ever fib about having one. - HillerMylife, on 07/24/2008, -0/+13I guess that explains House's patented LSD Anti-Migraine prescription?
- billsprestonIU, on 07/23/2008, -0/+10My mom suffers from horrible migraines and I never really understood how painful it was for her. They would get so bad that I watched her give herself shots from this huge scary syringe when I was younger. This article was really enlightening - poor mom :( Glad to see new steps are being made.
- Slackdragon, on 07/23/2008, -1/+11I feel your pain. I've been having migraines since I was 21, and last year I was hospitalized with a ruptured AVM at the base of my cortex and 6 aneurysms. I'm currently on 300mg of Topamax a day.
The intense pain and sickening aura of a an onsetting migraine is something that only someone who suffers from them can truly appreciate.
It annoys me to no end when people use the term "migraine" to describe a sinus headache or a mere tension headache. I usually ask, "So, these migraines of yours...you get them a lot do you?" Oh yeah! All the time... I usually just pop some Tylenol and soldier on. "Yeaaaaah... right. Tylenol." - Pifflebunk, on 07/23/2008, -0/+9For me getting the Aura is both good and bad. It takes about 30 minutes for the pain to kick in after the aura starts and that gives me time to get home and try to get to sleep, for me sleep is the best way to deal with the migraine. The down side of the aura is part of my vision is missing. Driving down the road I can not see the cars coming towards me, I can see the road but there is a blank spot where the cars are.
- cam0man, on 07/23/2008, -0/+8I digg you up for the weed comment. As a lifetime migraineur, I've seen it all. For years I settled on sumatriptan injections to keep myself from the pain, but their efficacy was questionable and usually resulted in rebounds. There's really only two options, try to abort the migraine w/ a vasoconstrictor or just numb the pain with a strong painkiller (demerol, morphine, other highly addictive opiates). Vasoconstrictors have odd side effects and as mentioned, sometimes only provide relief for a few hours - I for one am not a fan of strolling into public bathrooms and self administering an injection, I just don't like it. Pain killers don't work because of the addiction, for someone who suffers regularly from migraines, I can't just be on a morphine drip regularly and doctors won't write scripts for heavy opiates. Weed is the only painkiller that isn't addictive and is cheap as dirt, plus it has 0 long term side effects. You want to roll the dice with a serotonin agonist or vasoconstrictor? because I don't like injecting myself with something that cuts off blood flow with my brain directly - I did it for years and it was sure as hell better than wanting to kill myself because of a migraine, but it's not a long term solution.
- cam0man, on 07/23/2008, -0/+8buried as inaccurate: 'biologists finally unlock the mystery'?
this article simply points out the recent research being conducted.....doctors have long found direct causation of migraines from known triggers, but the problem is how to permanently stop this causation. there's treatments and there's cures, this article is about treatments. - KingBroseph, on 07/23/2008, -0/+7Migraine pain is the worst pain i've experienced so far in my life and i've broken two bones.
I once had one so bad i said to myself "i hope no one ever in the world, whether they be a terrible person or not, has to feel this pain." - VacantThoughts, on 07/23/2008, -0/+6For me it kills headaches, but I smoked once when I had a migraine and it felt like I was getting kicked in the head, though the high does help some its really not worth it unless you have a vaporizer.
- youelcomet, on 07/23/2008, -0/+5"Minor defects included a hole above the buttocks, a flattened head, toe webbing, clicky hips and immature hip joints. "
A hole above the buttocks is a minor defect? - ttread, on 07/23/2008, -0/+5I know of a remedy for migraines that may stop an attack if taken at the onset: 3 Advil Liqui-gels and a can of caffeinated soda such as Pepsi or Coke. The ibuprofen, caffeine, sugar, cola and carbonation all contribute. This was recommended by a headache specialist to my wife who suffers terrible migraines. She now takes this every time an attack starts and says it's very effective. My sister also tried it and says it really works.
- SilverNakamura, on 07/23/2008, -2/+7What a coincidence this story is for myself. I had a migraine just this morning and for it being my first time having one, boy are they not fun. I felt like complete ***** when I woke up and could not get back to sleep cause my head was pounding so much.
- cjgallen, on 07/23/2008, -0/+4I know for a fact that WEED words wonders.
- inactive, on 07/23/2008, -1/+5As a sufferer of migraines, I'm happy that the condition is finally being taken seriously. I too use weed when I get them - but it only helps so much. I used to take Imatrex (sp?), but I found some of the side effects were pretty harsh. The last time I had one, I took 2000mg of Ibuprofen with a an eighth of Alabama Thunder Cabbage. It didn't totally kill the migraine, but it sure lessened the pain.
- xhero0, on 07/23/2008, -0/+4my wife was on topamax while she was pregnant with my son. she was taking 300mg 3 times a day. At 3 months my baby is very healthy no issues!
THANK GOD - itskennard, on 07/23/2008, -0/+4***** you, migraines.
- h4mx0r, on 07/23/2008, -0/+3I bet Madagascar never experiences any.
- BOFH2, on 07/23/2008, -0/+3weather fronts bring mine on. When Katrina made landfall I woke up and puked. Funny thing is that I live in MN.
- Rsulliv1, on 07/23/2008, -0/+3I'll vouch for Imitrex.
I keep them with me at all times.
I went without anything for years, but there comes a point where you can't stand squeezing your own temples to relieve the strain for hours in the middle of the night. When you start to think that the guy in Pi has a good idea about getting rid of headaches... you need to get some pills.
There's also a daily pill that is supposed to completely avoid migraines, whereas Imitrex is used only after the onset of an attack (I was just at the doc's office recently about this issue). - dvsbastard, on 07/23/2008, -0/+3I agree... The aura's act as a good warning system and usually give me enough time to pop some pain killers, lock myself in a dark, quiet room and just relax (and try to sleep) it off...
Although I have had a few attacks while driving and it is extremely dangerous... - inactive, on 07/23/2008, -0/+3Who in the ***** would digg me down for that comment?
- tr0j, on 07/23/2008, -0/+2I hear ya. The most important exam at the end of high school, and the aura arks up 20 mins in. I knew 2 things. (1) I was going to be essentially blind for 20 critical minutes in about another 10 minutes time and (2) No one would ever believe me.
- ithejosh, on 07/23/2008, -0/+2I wish the article was more concise.
Anyways I have a migraine about once a year.
They are pain beyond belief.
Something interesting though, sometimes I am nauseous when I get migraines, and once I throw up they go way. Anyone else had that happen before? - shyvyr, on 07/23/2008, -0/+2I'll vouch for this. I usually take 800mg of Ibuprofen and a Mt Dew. It doesn't get rid of all of the pain (not even most of it) but it keeps me from wanting to kill myself.
- thebrokedown, on 07/23/2008, -0/+2Hey, Bill, i just wanted to tell you that if that was imitrex, the casing for the shot was huge, but the actual needle was of a regular size. The big part was to 1. hide the needle so she wouldn't have to see it, and 2. hold a spring-loaded mechanism that sort of popped the needle forward so she wouldn't have to push the plunger down herself. Still scary, but really not that bad. I am a HUGE shot-o-phobic, and I could give myself these with relative ease. I hope that makes your younger self feel a little better :)
- sciencenerd, on 07/23/2008, -0/+2Amen!! I hate when people claim to get migraines and then just say "Oh just take some Tylenol." Right, like that's going to help.
- Eddylee, on 07/23/2008, -1/+3I'm pretty sure Migraines were identified as stemming from faulty neurological activity within the corpus callosum and other central regions of the brain a long time ago - which is what led to split brain therapy and all that ***** you read about in psych 101.
- newms32, on 07/23/2008, -1/+3editing out my comment because of that ***** "thread" button
- Yamada, on 07/23/2008, -0/+2Very interesting, and somewhat ironic for me since a friend of mine was complaining about massive migraines just yesterday after 3 days. A long read but definitely worth it imo.
- tonyr1988, on 07/23/2008, -0/+2I'm lucky - my migraine usually comes 1 hour after my aura starts (my aura usually lasts 20-30 minutes), so I've got plenty of time to get somewhere, usually.
Have you talked to your doctor about possibly getting medication to help with this? I was prescribed a drug called Tramadol (it's strong stuff). If I take it when I get my aura, it either: 1) knocks me out during the migraine, or 2) makes it where I am still awake, but do not feel the headache pain. I still get sick, my stomach hurts, and I throw up, but it's totally worth it if I don't have to suffer from the actual headache part. - apeweek, on 07/23/2008, -0/+2The theories in this article still do not explain the type of migraines that run in my family, called "silent migraines". We all get the migraine aura, but with no headaches. Migraines with no pain.
When I was younger, it was the opposite - full-blown migraines, with nausea, but no aura. As I aged, it turned into auras with no headaches. - axis, on 07/23/2008, -0/+2No mention of marijuana as a treatment/preventative? I have read countless stories about that helping. My girlfriend being a successful candidate as well.
- Rsulliv1, on 07/23/2008, -0/+2Commonly known as Imitrex.
- Vagari, on 07/24/2008, -0/+1I used to get migraines when I was a teenager and then had some relief for a bit. I did get a few last year too which really sucked. But (knock on wood) I haven't gotten one recently.
It drove me nuts when my doctor simply suggested I take ibuprofen, increasing the dosage each time. I think I got up to like 6 or 8 pills and they still had zero effect on the pain. So I just stopped taking anything and used the sleep it off method, which has always worked for me.
I'm just glad I didn't get them as bad as my sister does, where they last for days. :-( - Virgule, on 07/23/2008, -0/+1Oh, BTW, I found that Advil Liqui-Gels pills does work to alleviate some of the pain. Not all, but enough so I don't think only of blowing my own head off.
Marijuana has been detrimental to me. It raise the nauseous feel thru the floor, making me vomit with great enthusiasm.. YMMV :D - Virgule, on 07/23/2008, -0/+1I am subject to migraines. They are generally triggered by heavy emotional stress.
Whatever a migraine is and however they 'work', please, TAKE IT AWAY kthxbye. Its so damn painful I pretty much have to secure myself into a locked room from the outside. Otherwise Im afraid I would slit my throat clean right away. (slight exaggeration here, but not so much..) Huh! The fine article mentioned some people have migraines who last over two weeks??!?! Thanks god its not me....
There is no words to describe the pain and transmit an accurate representation to someone who never had one. The best horror movies got nothing on migraines. - Virgule, on 07/24/2008, -0/+1I double that! Advil Liqui-Gels do work for me too.. These are powerful goodies. YMMV tho..
- someology, on 07/23/2008, -0/+1you really should... I had a friend who didn't know what was wrong with her, and kept putting off going to the dr... by the time she saw a neurologist, she had permanent damage to her visual cortex... lost a lot of her peripheral vision.
- donna1234, on 05/08/2009, -0/+1No headaches

http://www.kombuchahome.com - bioturbator, on 07/23/2008, -0/+1migraines are genetic in my family one of two paternal grandparent, father, 1 of 6 of my siblings and myself. My sister and I track our migraines. Hers are more frequent, mine are more severe (quality vs quantity :) ) hers seem to be more weather related than mine. Imitrex nasal or oral works on mine w/o side effects. Imitrex is almost as bad as migraine for her. Full blown migraines put me down for 24 hours, can't function. Vomiting, light sensitivity, hearing and sense of smell become magnified. Odors I usually don't detect are vibrant when I am in the midst of migraine attack as well as hearing. I suffer from 2-8 per month, my entire life. My father was an M.D. who used to give us strong narcotic, phenegren, valium cocktail injection when we were younger before the days of Imitrex. I am a school teacher. If I cannot stop migraine at onset my principal knows the score. I go to office and tell them I have to go. They don't question me or argue, they have seen what happens if I don't go home. They found me curled up by toilet in faculty bathroom my first year and called 911. This happens maybe 2-3 times a year.
I would give my right thumb to never suffer from another one, but I am thankful for medicines like Imitrex (nasal or injection). - shyvyr, on 07/23/2008, -1/+2I found the article really interesting. A lot of really good information. However, more interesting to me are all the comments here on Digg. I just started suffering migraines about a month ago. I've had 8 in the last three weeks. These comments have done more for helping me understand migraines than all the articles I've read online. Thanks all for the good information Digg. This thread is a good example of how a social news website can really pay off.
- BOFH2, on 07/23/2008, -0/+1a few doctors that I have seen mentioned this too me when I said I get nauseous. Guess it helps some people, not me.
- bdbr, on 07/23/2008, -0/+1It depends on the person. For me, ibuprofen doesn't do a thing. The only thing that I've found works is Norgesic Forte, which I was first prescribed after an auto accident.
- Virgule, on 07/24/2008, -0/+1Is it the thing where all your body parts are somehow connected to some point under your foot?
- girlpirate, on 07/24/2008, -0/+1I have had this happen but its usually just temporary. the pain goes away long enough for me to get to work or wherever before it comes back to knock me on my ass.
